      Stoke-on-Trent

      2 października 2023, Anglia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Well, it was all a bit strange. The water situation, mainly because the toilets wouldn’t work without it, was a bit dire. Ironically, though, it was pouring with rain.

We drove through the rain for two hours until we found a water point. Don and Chris filled the water tank, standing in the rain, quite cold, drinking a beer. At the same time, Sharon and Kim had hot showers (while still at the water point, so as not to deplete the supply) and warmed the boat to dry the clothes out.

We chose a good canal - the Macclesfield - to cruise along. It was quiet, although there were quite a few boats moored along the banks (some a bit derelict, it appeared). The rural scenery - green pastures, sheep, farm buildings, even the occasional re-purposed mill - was beautiful on the sunny days (that is, once), and wonderfully atmospheric on the wet ones, even when your socks were wringing wet from the rain.

We did have quite a lot of rain on our way back to Stoke-on-Trent, and another toilet situation (collectively, that is, not personally).

Being extravagant with our water, and - truth be told - our alcohol consumption, it soon became odorously apparent that we urgently needed a pump out. More rain-soaked driving ensued, before we reached the nirvana of the pump-out station, where a friendly, apparently olfactorily challenged, man removed the offensive material from the boat.

Armed with beers purchased from the boat yard, we tackled the Bosley Locks with gusto, pleased to se the rain subsiding and that there were people on the canals even more inept than we. The rain was easing, but the ground remained saturated as we made our way down from locks one to twelve.

The following day (after another stylish celebration, this time at the Church House Hotel in Congleton) we strolled through the final lock and, after another half-hour of exhaust fumes in the Harecastle Tunnel, made our way back to the marina and returned the boat.

Wet weather notwithstanding, the whole narrowboat experience was great. By the end of the trip we were steering the boat like pros, barely hitting anything (not too hard, at least) and giving other people tips on operating the locks and good pubs to visit.

We have now said our fond goodbyes to Don and Kim after a great few weeks, and are en route to York to start the next stage of our trip.

British at its Best!

A Day in rhe Peak District

      19 września 2019, Anglia ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

A fabulous day. Met Gill and Bob for breakfast and they had worked out a plan for the day - our one full day together. Instead of wandering round Buxton, they took us round the area in the car, visiting and passing through so many picturesque villages - stone houses, pretty gardens - going on 2 walks - one beside a small stream and at the end of the day we went up to a high rocky edge which we walked up and what a wonderful view from the top over the whole countryside. And again it was perfect weather! After starting quite cold in the morning (about 10° I think) it warmed up until we only needed t-shirts walking in the sun. Then deliciously cools off again after sunset. This wonderful weather now makes me nervous for what will be in store for us next week!

A highlight of the day was a visit to Chatsworth - the Stately Home and estate of the dukes of Devonshire. It is in this area so we drove in and parked and walked round the grounds. It is enormous and you can pay quite a lot and visit inside the house and garden, but that would be a serious several hours, so we walked and admired from outside.

One small town we stopped in was Bakewell, very pretty, where we bought cheese and had a tea break, with their local specialty Bakewell tart, and we stopped for a beer and nibbles before we did the walk up the ridge. So we were nicely hungry when we returned to Buxton and had a Thai meal. We had seen the restaurant last night and that it was busy and full so thought we’d try it. Excellent, and now ready for bed.

Cotswolds, the Bard and Friends at Lunch

      10 maja 2023, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Our destination for today was the outskirts of Birmingham via Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare.

A motorway route to Stratford would have been about 20 minutes quicker, but we chose to take a more scenic route through the northern Cotswolds. A lovely morning in Oxford gradually turned to showers of rain for the rest of the day.
As the Cotswolds is one area we were not spending much time in at all, we travelled via a really beautiful little town (Burton-on -the-Water) and enjoyed morning tea by the banks of this quintessentially idyllic English village. It embodied everything you could imaging a small English country town should be. Beautiful historic buildings, open spaces and grassed area running down to a perfect little stream running through the centre of town.

After coffee and pastry from the Bakery, we headed off for Stratford through more rolling hills and greenery.

We toured the Birthplace of Shakespeare and then strolled through town a short distance to meet up with Stephen and Lindsey Whitehouse for lunch. It was lovely to see them again and we talked for a couple of hours over lunch. We had stayed so long that Daniel (their son, who attends school there - the same school that Shakespeare attended!) strolled down the street and we chatted briefly before we all had to part company.
The Whitehouses asked to pass on their love to all of you who might know them.

It was now late in the afternoon, but we still had 3 more sightseeing tasks before heading to our overnight accommodation near Birmingham.

Shakespeare’s ‘new place’, Anne Hathaway’s cottage and then a drive to Coventry to take a short look at the Cathedral that was bombed during World War 2 and stands as a grim reminder of what the British endured. So badly and repeatedly was Coventry bombed due to its industrial production, car and aircraft engines, munitions manufacture etc that it became one of Hitler’s prime targets. Today the bombed out shell of the Cathedral is an ongoing reminder of the ‘Coventry Blitz’.

A half hour drive from Coventry to our little apartment in Solihull saw us arriving at about 7pm. Not much dinner required after a large and excellent lunch with our friends.

      Strandet in Halesowen

      6 listopada 2023, Anglia ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Deutscher Text ist weiter unten zu finden!

"Seems like there's no international trip without some gas trouble. Today is one of those tricky days again! It all started on Saturday when we noticed that our gas was running low, and there was no spare bottle in sight. By yesterday, it was down to just enough for a morning coffee – that's it. So, it was all about wearing onion style and huddling up with a hot water bottle in bed. Unfortunately, these gas issues led to me catching a slight cold.

So, Rupert set out this morning at 8 o'clock to get a new gas bottle, while the dogs and I continued to snooze in the camper's alcove. I know, I know, it's not allowed, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I'll spare you the nitty-gritty details of our gas-related escapades, but let's just say it involved some detours before successfully connecting a new gas bottle.

Anyway, our quest led us to a maze-like courtyard filled with rental containers. At first, we couldn't find the camping supply store, but inside, we were pleasantly surprised to find a comprehensive selection of camper essentials. Long story short, we got the help we needed, and we quickly stopped by "Sarah's Café," which is inside a blue double-decker bus – it has a kitchen downstairs and a dining area upstairs. Sarah, who's been cooking in her bus for 12 years, whipped up some delicious sandwiches for us just before closing up for the day. Back in the car, we shared the tasty sandwiches with the dogs and continued our journey to the little town center of Halesowen.

While Rupert had his head in the "Grandad, Tell Me Your Memories" book that Kathrin handed him, I explored the five local charity shops. I found a pair of boots that'll suit my skirts, a neckerchief, and a cap for rainy weather. Once we returned to Tipton, we took it easy, getting ready for the evening. Charles's wife, Sandra, is cooking for us tonight!

As for the day we depart from Birmingham, that's still up in the air..."

      Birmingham Art Museum

      3 kwietnia, Anglia ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Pre-Raphaelites were like the hippies or beatniks of the Victorian Era. They formed in Birmingham in the mid-1800s and challenged the status quo of the art world at the time. Dante Gabriel Rossetti was highlighted here, as was Edward Burne-Jones. I’d like to learn more about those two. William Morris is probably the most famous artist who was part of their group, and his art was influenced by their ideas for decades to come. I found this fitting because Birmingham is not like other British cities. It sprung up almost entirely due to the Industrial Revolution so it doesn’t have the long history of other British cities. It saw overnight growth, incredible fortunes made, and a growing population of working poor. Its history feels more American. Czytaj więcej

      Inverness to Stornaway

      21 sierpnia 2023, Anglia ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Left Inverness by rental car. Drove to Culloden- scene of an English massacre during a Jacobite rising in 1746. The battlefield has been restored and shows the Jacobite line and the English Government line
After Culloden we drove down the full length of Loch Ness- so many tourists. Is a beautiful lake.
We then drove for 4 hours around the west Highlands towards Ullapool to catch the ferry to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis and Harris

      A day of travel

      10 grudnia 2023, Anglia ⋅ 🌬 9 °C

We said fair well to our castle accommodation this morning and set out towards Manchester, where we had a bit of a walk around and lunch before heading the rest of the way to Birmingham.

We made a little detour to Walsall and stopped to see the house Bec's mum lived in when she was a child!

We got to Birmingham and parked in a questionable car park before checking in to our high tech hotel, no key cards here! Just use your phone to call the elevator, unlock the door and control the lights.

We headed out for a quick walk, grabbed a meal deal (sandwich, chips and soda) for dinner and headed back to watch a Christmas movie.

All in all it was a pretty quiet day because there was quite a bit of travel involved, but at least we managed to hit our step goal again!
