      Weston-super-Mare to Taunton

      26 Mayıs, İngiltere ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

      It was a really rainy day . . .
This morning in Weston-super-Mare, I awoke to clearish skies. I checked out of my room by 10:30, leaving my suitcase at the front office. I walked south along the promenade to the big ferris wheel. Lots of people out walking with their kids, dogs, and friends.
I was anxious to get on my way before the impending rain; my train ticket was for 1:25 pm (they're about everyhalf hour), but I knew I could get on an earlier one. When I arrived at the station an hour early, I was told that the next train had been canceled. That meant I'd be on the 1:25 train.
The hotel I'm staying at in Taunton, the Corner House, is a pretty one built in the 1800s as a Bishop's Palace, according to staff. My room is on the 1st floor, which means stairs and a corridor that twists and turns to Room 19. It's the smallest hotel room so far, but it seems pretty comfy.
I was planning on going to the Somerset Museum at the former Taunton Castle tomorrow (the bank holiday), as I had previously enquired by email with them, but today, their website says they open next on Tuesday. 😞 Hope it's wrong.
Fun fact: all the restaurants / pubs that I've seen offer a Sunday Roast dinner with beef, pork, or chicken, Yorkshire pudding, and veggies.

      Taunton Day 3

      29 Mayıs, İngiltere ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

What a brilliant day! I called the cab company at 9:30 to take me to the archives again for my final day. It arrived in a few minutes, and the driver was my first woman cabbie named Anna. She insisted I sit in the front seat. She was quite chipper and chatty; originally from Poland, she's been in the Uk for about 20 years. We had a great chat during the 10-minute drive.
I had quite a few documents, maps, and scrolls waiting for me on arrival at the archives. I slogged through all of them, again taking photos of what I was interested in. I sure hope I'm able to make sense of all these pics when I get home! By 3:35, I'd finished with them and went to look through the few books on Chew Magna in the local studies section. I needed help finding one of them - a 1946 volume called "Notes and Queries for Somerset and Dorset" - and the 2 pages I wanted to see confirmed SO much about the Chiswell dynasty!! I can't believe my luck! It also confirmed a generation that I had missed. Between this information and the visit to Chew House (formerly Westend Cottages), the thousands of dollars I've spent on this trip are totally worth it!
I was done by 4:15, so I called the cab company again, and they told me the car would be there shortly. I was busy talking with another archive visitor who had been researching the history of her 200+ year old home when I realized my cab was waiting outside. Turned out the driver was . . . Anna! What a coincidence. We had a great chat about how our days had gone during the ride back to my hotel.
I'm glad I don't have to go back to the archives again tomorrow. I'm exhausted from the required attention to detail. Tomorrow, I'll be taking the train back to Bristol Temple Meads station, then a cab down to Chew Magna for 2 more nights.
The journey home begins on Saturday.
Not so Fun Fact: you'll know what I mean when you see my photos.

      Taunton Day 1

      27 Mayıs, İngiltere ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I had a table booked for a 9:30 breakfast this morning. In advance, you can order a hot meal, but there is also a buffet that has cereals, juices, fruit, etc. Because I booked my room directly with the hotel, my breakfast is included. That's been the case for all the places I've stayed at so far.
I left before 10:30 and walked 10 minutes to the Somerset Museum. It's situated in the 12th century Taunton Castle. There are 2 main parts; the history of the county Somerset from prehistoric times to the present, along with a military museum. After a couple of days 'vacation' in Weston-super-Mare, visiting this museum has put me back into a historic frame of mind. I didn't find anything that mentioned Chiswell's or Chew Magna, but I'm gung-ho about my 1st full day at the Somerset Archives tomorrow!
On return to the hotel, I had a lazy afternoon reading my book and reviewing what I'm hoping to unearth at the archives tomorrow.
I haven't had a martini in years, but being my birthday, I felt I was owed one. Classic with olives. To my disappointment, the only martinis they're allowed to serve here are the darn fancy ones that James Bond would have cringed at, as I have.
Tonight, it'll be telly and early-ish to bed. The archives open at 10 am, and around at 9:30, I'll be on my way by cab.
Just had dinner with a Brit named Amber. Lots of interesting discussions about England, Canada, the USA, and traveling. Now, to relax before my first day at the archives.
Fun fact: I haven't heard or seen Trump's name in 2 weeks!

      Baron's Keep to Frome

      29 Haziran 2023, İngiltere ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Well, the last few days have been very full. On Friday I took myself off to Ealing to visit with Jonathan, Rozalea and Simon and, as it happened their friend, Jon. We had a great time catching up about his school reports he was supposed to be doing but decided to have a day off and do the reports over the weekend. Clever lad!!

Jonathan and Simon met me at the Tube Station and walked me home to their house so I wouldn't get lost. They live in a lovely tree lined street and in a gorgeous small apartment. Wee Simon was a treat to watch and play with, lovely to catch up with the adults too.

On Saturday we went across to Streatham to help with the child care of Lachy, (Megs and I) and painting of the spare room (Sara and Colin). Owen was busy mitring corners for the kitchen and putting up a picture rail in the newly painted bedroom. It looks magnificent! Gave me an idea too. Very domesticated.

Megs and I took Lachy out for a play in the park, I sat taking photos while Megs wore herself out running around and playing with Lachy. He is an amazingly articulate little boy of 20 months and is so surprising in the quality of his speech and sentence making! Helicopter and hippopotamus don't phase him at all.

I decided Sunday was a day off for me and began to think about packing and organising for my trip to Frome as well as taking a trip into the huge Westfield mall in Shepherds Bush to buy a few clothing items. It was busy and very hot so not a pleasant experience, but great to know that.

Tuesday, Simon and Lachy came to stay for the day so much fun was had. I took Simon for a walk while Lachy had a sleep so into Hammersmith we went. I was so proud of him as he remained calm and rested 98% of the time. Well done Simon!!

Yesterday I packed up and after two tube station stops, eventually found my way with the help of a few people to the Waterloo station where I caught the train to Frome.

Frome is a wee village like town in Somerset and am so enjoying it so far, I stopped at a woman's shop, art studio and home as she was out on the pavement. I asked her for direction as to where the post office, the library and the supermarket were.

She just looked at me quizzically for a few seconds then said "shall i get the car and take you?" .... Without blinking an eye she then went back inside, ordering me to stay right there, and five minutes later stopped her car in front of me saying "hop in"! Without even giving it a minute's thought, off we went to the grocery store first while she waited and waited for me...pointed me in the direction of the post office, waited while I stood in a queue there, then, took me home to my place to drop off the groceries, then dropped me at the library!!

How's that for small village England?? I was amazed, delighted and so very grateful, she has also invited me to tea at her house when I feel the need!! Amazing!! What a privilege to experience this act of kindness!

There is so much going on here during the festival, I'll be lucky to see any of the rest of Somerset and the Cotswalds, but I'll do my best.
I have landed in time for the "Frome Festival" which begins next week.... so much to see and do, Kerry told me not to miss the Christian church concert which of course I won't! Then i meet Megs n Colin in Bath in ten days time to tourist around there.

I'm still trying to work out how to get to Stonehenge which isn't far from here, but little public transport. I have thoroughly enjoyed walking around Frome today.

      Taunton Day 2

      28 Mayıs, İngiltere ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Mom would be SO proud of me!! My first day at the Somerset archives - any archives - but I don't know if I've stumbled upon anything extraordinary. I had previously requested that they have 16 items available for me over today and tomorrow, but because most of them have the Chiswell name, I didn't take time to read much; I just got busy snapping pics of them to look at when I get home. I think I got through more than half of them.
I also requested some additional docs today, so I've got my work cut out for me tomorrow! There's also a local studies section with a variety of publications (books, articles, etc.), and I looked at 2 of them before I left. Hope I'm able to get everything done.
So I'm sitting in my special alcove here in the pub where I'll have my dinner. I know I've said it before, but I'm loving the game shows here on tell.
Fun fact: do you know that parents have their children picked up from school by taxi?

Drove from West Bay to Lyme Regis.
Walked through the town, had lunch, walked through the Jubilee gardens and back along the coast. A very beautiful sea side historic village.

      Day 1 Taunton

      Day 2 lllminster.

      11 Nisan 2023, İngiltere ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

Set off after breakfast 10am and drove to Wells. Went through South Petherton, illchester, Shepton Mallet, and Croscombe on route to Wells. All beautiful little towns in glorious countryside. Spent time looking through the Cathederal, Bishops Palace and town centre. What a great experience. Very spiritually uplifting. The Canterbury choir were practising in preparation for the coronation. The organ music and singing were very moving in such an historic and spiritual building. Raining on and off, quite cold. Still a great day's outing. Arrived back at the hotel at 3pm.Okumaya devam et

      12 Nisan 2023, İngiltere ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

Set off after breakfast at 9am. Drove to Salisbury and spent three hours looking through the Cathederal and having lunch. The Cathederal is just amazing. So much to take in a really great experience. Left Salisbury at 2pm and drove to Mere, a small town where many of the relations came from. Had a look through St Michael's Church and the town centre. A very cold day, strong wind and intermittent rain. Despite the weather another great day travelling through the Somerset/Wiltshire country side.Okumaya devam et
