      Washington D.C.

      Après un petit déjeuner rapide, on a commencé notre visite à pied de la ville. C’est vraiment une belle ville et on a marché du Lincoln Memorial jusqu’à Capitol Hill après avoir passé devant la Maison Blanche. On a ensuite été manger dans un bar un super bon burger qui on a découvert plus tard était passé à l’émission de Guy Fieri du Food Network (Diner’s, Driveins and Dives). Bref, c’était un « deep fried burger » et c’était cochon et délicieux!
      Après, on a été voir les tableaux de Van Gogh, DeVinci, Cézanne, Monet, Manet, Matisse, etc. au Natural Gallery of Art. Puis une visite très rapide au Smithsonian National Museum of History.
      16 km marchés aujourd’hui et on va devoir revenir... trop de choses à voir!      Read more

      A Monumental Day

      We awoke to a beautiful sunny day. We headed off for breakfast, and then down to the Washington Memorial, with the intention of getting tickets to take the elevator up to the observation deck. We got there to find it was closed because of structural problems resulting from an earthquake in 2011 (magnitude 7.6). Some repairs were undertaken and it re-opened last year, but the elevator kept breaking down and now it is closed indefinitely. So, after taking photos towards the Capital and the Lincoln Memorial - located at either end of the National Mall - we then headed to the Smithsonian precinct to visit a number of museums.

      We started with the Museum of Natural History, where we particularly enjoyed the mammal exhibition, and one on Human Origins, and I was impressed with the Hope Diamond. We then went to the American History Museum, where we found out about the Star Spangled Banner (flag and song). It only became the National Anthem in 1931. There was also an interesting exhibition on the Presidents.

      After lunch, we went to the Museum of African American History, which was only opened about a year ago. It is a wonderful modern building, and the exhibition is outstanding. It starts with the History Galleries that take you through Slavery and Freedom (1400 - 1877), then Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom: The Era of Segregation (1876 - 1968), and the last history gallery - A Changing America: 1968 and Beyond. The exhibits were very graphic and it was quite emotional to read about the history of the African Americans, especially the personal accounts. There were a further three galleries that cover culture, community and heritage, but we ran out of time, and were feeling quite drained after completing the first three galleries.

      We then headed down the National Mall towards the WW2 Memorial, the reflection pool and the Lincoln Memorial. After this we walked through the parks back towards the White House, and our hotel. The foliage is stunning at the moment, especially against the backdrop of a beautiful blue sky.

      We did see POTUS depart from the White House in his helicopter, with two other helicopters escorting him, and they basically shut down the surrounding streets. We also spotted some secret service staff on the roof of one of the federal buildings. As we walked past the White House the police were clearing Lafayette Park - we're not sure why, they don’t give any explanation. By the time we got back to the hotel we had clocked up 18,218 steps, and felt a bit knackered.

      After a bit of a rest and freshening up we headed out for dinner to Bidwell, a restaurant that we had read about in the Age travel section. It was located in the Florida Avenue Farmers Market. It was recently awarded a Bib Gormand from Michelen for great food at reasonable prices. The meal was delicious and enjoyed by all three of us.      Read more

      White House

      You can't visit Washington D.C without taking the traditional and iconic picture in front of the White House. There were few tourist snapping pictures probably due to the winter season. Secret service officers were all over the place acting casual but very observant. Over 10 were seen on the roof of the white house.

      The walk to the White House took me through the front of the Eisenhower Executive office building which houses the Vice President's office along with other White House executive officers.      Read more

      Washington and Sunshine! Day2.

      This morning we had some yoghurt & fruit in our room and then organized an Uber ride down to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. The Uber worked really well and the driver was very friendly. The Museum was a real ‘wow’ for Craig and I was suitably impressed with all the planes, rockets and war displays. They have amazing things on display included space shuttle, Apollos and even the Wright Brothers plane. I particularly love Amelia Earhart’s pretty red plane!! It was free and so we went to the Washington National Art Gallery next. We loved amazing art there including one Leonardo Da Vinci, Monets, Renoirs and other French Impressionists, Cezanne’s – didn’t love the portraits; also loved another Singer Sergeant and some Whistlers and American Art including the bronze Shaw Memorial – commemorating the role of the African American soldiers. The guides were very helpful and friendly! We had sandwich lunches at the Art Gallery Café.
      It was such a lovely sunny day – no coats and we really enjoyed going through the Art Gallery sculpture park with the fellow Washingtonians sunning themselves outside. During his presidency, bloody Trump has converted a beautiful Post Office building into another one of his expensive hotels. What an unethical person he truly is! The walk back to the hotel was very pleasant indeed. Washington has very wide avenues and magnificent buildings.
      This evening we walked out to Tortino's Restaurant - Italian but everyone working there was Mexican! We didn't like the gnocchi much but loved the salad + burrata + especially the SemiFreddo of amaretto flavour. Another good day and so far we really like Washington.      Read more

      Thanksgiving Part 1

      Today I woke up with a bit of a sniffle, so the boys headed out to Starbucks for breakfast while I had a bit of a sleep-in. We headed off around 10 this morning, and made our way down to the National Mall towards the National Air and Space Museum. We went through a number of the exhibits including Early Flight, the Golden Age of Flight, Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall, Space Race, America by Air, Great War in the Air, World War 2 Aviation, Military Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Sea-Air Operations, Apollo to the Moon, Time and Navigation and Exploring the Moon. Once again great exhibits, great spaces and all for free!

      After finishing at the Air and Space Museum we headed out for some lunch. We found a bunch of food trucks and ordered Quesadillas that we ate on a bench in the National Mall.      Read more

      Der Verkehr ist der Horror, wie immer 🙈
      Ansonsten hat Washington viele Gebäude zu besichtigten (das weiße Haus, viele Gedenkstätten oder Monumente etc.) Es gibt einen riesigen Park in dem sich alles befindet.
      Es ist natürlich toll das weiße Haus mal zu sehen aber es ist eigentlich garnicht beeindruckend 😂
      Washington ist okay und intressant aber ich hätte gerne ein Museum besucht wo ich was über die Geschichte des Landes etc lernen könnte, aber das gab es leider nicht. Stattdessen eins über die deutsche Geschichte (Hitler Zeit und so) und natürlich wie die Amerikaner alle befreiten... die Helden.
      Wir waren auch im höchsten Gericht des Landes wo die Todesstrafen verhängt werden. Das war intressant 😊
      Also wer auf bedeutende Gebäude und viel Sicherheitspersonal steht, ist in Washington zuhause 😃

      Thanksgiving Part 2

      After lunch we headed to the National Gallery of Art, where we went to a Vermeer Exhibition, and also saw some wonderful art - they have put together an excellent collection, and it is housed in a gorgeous building. We saw works by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Monet, Renoir, Manet, da Vinci, Goya, Turner, Constable, Pissarro, Matisse, Caillebotte, Bazille, Delacroix, Gauguin and Vermeer.

      After spending a couple of hours in the gallery we wound our way back up to our hotel, to give me a chance to catch up on my blog, and to relax before heading out for our Thanksgiving dinner. We may walk down to the Lincoln Memorial after dinner to see it at night.      Read more

      Day 22

      Blossoming Washington DC!

      We didn’t rush to leave but left about 9am. The roads were busy but fine and as always Craig was amazing in the car – love him so!! We arrived around 12pm and parked in front of the Madison Hotel and walked our bags down to our hotel – The Architect. We couldn’t check in but left, got petrol and then returned our car to the Renaissance hotel – which was a little tricky to find but okay. We then set out for a long and wonderful walk. We are located in the financial district, which is very close to the White House We walked down and saw many amazing, large impressive buildings including the Eisenhower and walked through the Ellipse section of parklands near to the very tall Washington Monument. More walking took us to the Memorial fountain area, which leads to the Reflection Pool (as in Forrest Gump!!) which was very moving and leads up to the Lincoln Memorial. We then walked by the District of Columbia War Memorial, which looks like a little Roman temple. We found the Martin Luther King Statue, which is quite remarkable – I loved it and it is a suitable tribute to this significant man. Then our hearts were joyous – the Washington cherry blossom trees are in full, gorgeous bloom and absolutely looked fantastic. One for the bucket list. It was a long walk home but Washington is a well laid out, clean city with many buildings on a massive scale.

      After a much-needed rest, we walked out for dinner at a nearby restaurant called GEORGIA BROWNE’S. I had a yummy Catfish Caesar Salad – suitably spicy and Craig enjoyed his pork chop! I also enjoyed my blueberry Mojito. Great day again!      Read more

      Government day!

      This morning after breakfast of oats with fruit at a local bakery we took another Uber down to the Thomas Jefferson memorial we have been impressed with Uber so far. This memorial is also another very impressive one and we were lucky to be there for the 275th celebration of Thomas Jefferson. We saw a ceremony with officials and military soldiers who looked great in their regalia and they played music 🎵 and laid flower wreaths. Next we went to the Capitol building Which is the government house and it shines brightly. In the sunlight. We waited around for dignitaries to Leave and then went downstairs to the visitor centre. Fortunately, we were able to get into a tour and had a good look around at the dime and saw the many statues representing each of the American states and several of the presidents - but not all of them.
      Then we walk down to the Union Square train station. This is another impressive building for a train station And we had lunch there at Johnny Rockets, finally an American diner👍
      Long walk home and it was actually quite hot we got sweaty😫. We enjoyed a cool drink at the Post Pub next door to our hotel and then a rest.
      This sunny evening we ventured out for our final meal at an excellent restaurant called Centrolina. Yummy pasta with ricotta mint and fava bean was the highlight and it was in a very trendy area near to all the expensive shops. Lovely balmy evening walk home. Off to Chicago tomorrow. 😉❤️      Read more
