      Shoshone Falls

      16. juli 2023, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

We were hopeful to play in the water because the temps had been over 100°, but it turns out this is just a viewpoint of the falls.
VERY steep and tight turns taking Snickerdoodle down to the parking area!Les mer

      Twin Falls

      22. mai 2020, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

After a little breakfast in our room we went to check out the real life Up-house (known from the movie Up). Soon after we went to a near by outlet mall to do some shopping. It was surprisingly empty, and just a few shops like Nike had a waiting queue. After a successful hour of shopping we had a quick sandwich in the car for lunch and then made our way towards north on the freeway to Twin Falls. Somewhere on the border to Idaho it started raining heavily. As the temperature dropped as well (from 21° to 1°!), the rained turned into snow and the sight was pretty bad. Fortunately the weather was much better when we arrived in Twin Falls. The hotel was amazing: the staff was friendly and we even got upgraded to a better room for free! After admiring our room for half an hour we did a little sightseeing in the city as we saw the Memorial bridge on our way to the restaurant we had chosen. We grabbed some very good pizza from Blaze Pizza and enjoyed them in our room as an end of a tiring but good day!
      Next stop: Jackson.

      Twin Falls, Idaho

      6. mai 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Larry heard we were in his stomping grounds, so he joined us in checking our Twin Falls. The Snake River Gorge was breathtaking! Shoshone Falls as well. Nice size town with good vibes with incredibly friendly people. Unfortunately, we found it rather far from additional areas of recreational interest and a major airport.Les mer

      The Culprit: VSA Solenoid

      6. mai 2021, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Turns out the issue with the CR-V’s VSA light was the solenoid. An easy enough replacement ... especially since the part was in stock at the local Honda Service Shop and Addison Car Care was able to get their hands on it quickly.

So, what’s the VSA? It’s the vehicle stability assist system in the CR-V. It’s what helps keep the vehicle on the road when circumstances warrant its engagement ... something that happens automatically.

Glad that it’s fixed ... even if it did take all morning to run the diagnostic, determine the problem, and get the replacement part installed.

We’ll be getting on the road after we grab a quick bite to eat. We may not be able to drive the minimum 188-miles I had planned for today. But any miles we get under our tires will be that many fewer miles to drive tomorrow.

By the way, no extra charge from the Fairgrounds for the delayed departure. When I called to check on the check-out time, I was told we were good as long as we left before 5:00p. we’ll definitely be gone by then.

      July 4-12

      11. juli 2023, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Last Wednesday my sister, Marcia, and I took a road trip to Twin Falls Idaho to attend the 2023 Minidoka Pilgrimage. Minidoka was an American concentration camp where up to 13,000 Japanese Americans were denied their civil rights and were incarcerated during World War 2. https://www.nps.gov/miin/index.htm
The first stop on our journey was lunch in Goldendale, WA. We continued east with stops in Baker City, overnight in Ontario, then on to Boise before reaching Twin Falls.
The Pilgrimage kicked off with a social and dinner at Koto Brewing Company. https://koto.beer/
We connected with our relatives from Texas, my Auntie Toku, cousins and theirs spouses and kids. Twelve Texans in all ranging in age from 1 to 91!
Opening ceremony was at the College of Southern Idaho followed by a full day of enlightening educational seminars.
Saturday morning we took a bus to Minidoka National Historic Site where we went to the Visitors Center then had a walking tour of the site guided by the NPS. It was quite moving walking where my grandparents, mother, aunts, uncles and older cousins trod 80 years ago. We returned to the college for an afternoon of small group Intergernerational Legacy Sessions. My session was informative, bonding and surprisingly (to me) emotional and cathartic. I guess generational trauma is a real thing. Later that evening we headed to the Fairfield Inn for cocktails, karaoke and dancing (imagine line dancing to Uptown Funk by a 90+ year old) and Japanese Bon Odori.
The closing ceremony was held at Minidoka with speeches given by various leaders of the JA community, National Park Service and Crow Nation. It was touching witnessing the survivors take part in the Native American sage smudging ceremony.
As always I was proud to locate my father's name on the Honor Roll where the names of JA soldiers of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Service fought for and served their country while their loved ones were incarcerated. https://goforbroke.org/history/unit-history/442…
We visited Shoshone Falls before starting our long drive home.
Thank you to the Minidoka Pilgrimage Planning Committee, Friends of Minidoka https://www.minidoka.org/ and National Parks Service for a fantastic experience. Thank you Marcia for driving.
Today we're bound for a 12 night stay at Neskowin Creek RV Park on the central Oregon Coast.

      Rough Start to Day 4

      6. mai 2021, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Off to a rough start this morning!

The VSA and check engine light on the CR-V came on last night. So the car is in the shop for a diagnostic. We’ve had this happen before and a simple reset solved the issue. Hope it is as simple this time.

Not too worried yet. We need just two days to get to Tacoma before the 12 May hard-deadline for the next phase of this trip. That’s when the vehicles will be loaded onto the Tote Maritime RoRo vessel. It’s also the day we fly out to Anchorage.

So glad we gave ourselves the extra time to make this trip.

End the Day in Twin Falls, Idaho

      5. mai 2021, Forente stater ⋅ 🌙 59 °F

Actually, we’re in Filer ... on the outskirts of Twin Falls. We’re settled into a dry camping spot at the Twin Falls Fairgrounds.

This was a shorter driving day ... just under 200 miles. We could have gone further, but Larry — one of Mui’s buddies from his days in the US Air Force — lives here and we wanted to meet up for a short reunion.

The drive from Ogden to Utah was an easy one. Quite unremarkable. Wide open spaces ... lots of farmlands and ranches with cattle and sheep. Distant mountains ... some green-clad hills. The camera on the iPhone didn’t see much action.

We arrived at the fairgrounds around 1:30p. This was to have been the only FHU campground on the trip to Tacoma, but since the route jiggles the first two days landed us in campgrounds where we had utilities, we opted to dry camp here ... $10.60. And for that we have the entire dry camping field to ourselves ... and only 3-4 rigs in the FHU section across the dirt road from where we are parked up.

Taking it easy this afternoon, we set off around 4:00p to run some errands. And then, we stopped at the visitor center. Not because we needed any info, but because it made a good parking spot for a short stroll between two overlooks on the rim of the Snake River Canyon.

Then it was time to meet Larry for dinner. We went to the only place Mui and I know in Twin Falls — Elevation 486 ... a restaurant perched on the rim of the canyon and so named due to its location 486 feet above the canyon floor. We managed to snag a table on the outdoor deck ... a delightful 72F ... but slightly cool in the shade.

It was great to see Larry again ... lots of reminiscing and catching up ... good food ... good camaraderie.

Tomorrow we continue our trek. If things go according to plan, we’ll be overnighting somewhere in Oregon.

      ——————————————

For those curious — dinner tonight consisted of a bruschetta appetizer with feta cheese and avocado; I ordered the butternut squash ravioli in a pistachio-basil sauce; Mui and Larry both had the Idaho ruby red trout. Dessert was a splurge ... cheesecake with caramel sauce and a dark chocolate ganache ... we split them three ways 🤪.
