      when meeting some snow by mistake...

      When hooking up ‚Santos‘ this morning we had no idea what awaits us later this day.... 🤦‍♀️

      A mug full of wake-up-coffe and a dog full of energy is a good start in the day.
      The Iphone knowingly stowed in the shirt pocket, we went for one last time into the nature reserve directly behind our trailer.
      Heidi loved it to be free here, chasing some rabbits and snooping around.

      Back on our parking lot the Airstream was routinely made ready for travel and a short time later we drove on highway #97 towards our next destination: ‚Crater Lake‘.

      It‘s a smooth ride southwards on #97 till you cross the junction with #138
      which then becomes a nice scenic route leading through the Crater Lake National Park.

      We reserved our overnight stay wisely a couple of days before cause ‚Crater Lake RV Park‘ is a very small, family operated park.
      When entering the maingate it quickly turned out that the reservation was completely unnecessary.
      We were the only guests, totally out of season.

      The park is one of the most beautiful spots we stayed in the past!
      Only 6 full hook up spots, all facing to a little crystal clear river where you see beavers building dams.
      You can grab a canoe to explore the area or make a walk on spiry pathes.
      The wooden hut which hosts the check in and a little country mart as well
      offers a small choice of food and of course chilly beer.

      So we stocked up our beer inventory locked the Airstream and drove up the curvy mountain road to explore the

      UNBELIEVABLE CRATER LAKE

      While climbing up more and more feet the roadside „chains needed“-signs became more and more frequent.
      Hmm,🤔 we never prepared the Chevy for any icy conditions...!
      Anyway, let‘s continue - the lake waits.
      Well, the last 8 miles on the winding road where actually covered with a thin layer of white but that wasn‘t an issue for the van.
      We are running Baja tires on both axles which means the truck can handle nearly everything!

      Then, passing one of the last curves, we entered a speechlessly a kind of fairytale world!

      A couple on hundred feed down the stunning lake lay nestled in companionship of the white winter-wonderland mountains.
      It was really glowing!
      Think we never saw such a blueish color before in our lifes.
      Unbelievable! Incredible! Awesome! [...]

      Heidi, grown up in sunny Yucatan, enjoyed the deep and fluffy snow as her biggest playground ever. So much fun.
      We had a great‘n cold day exploring the area around the Rim Village Visitors Center.

      Back at our homebase we switched our little heater in the Airstream to maximum and dreamed of some authentic german ‚Glühwein‘....      Les mer

      A breathtaking view!

      Von einem Kollegen als überraschendes Highlight seiner Reise vor 2 Jahren empfohlen, war das heutige Hauptziel der Crater Lake National Park. Der einzige National Park Oregons.

      War schon die Reise dorthin wirklich wunderschön (Blogeintrag: Oregon to California) so war der Anblick der sich uns bot, als wir das erste Mal vom einstigen Kraterrand (rim) hinunter auf den blauen See blickten einfach atemberaubend schön!

      Der See im Krater entstand nach dem Vulkanausbruch des Mount Zazama vor circa 7000 Jahren! Der See füllt sich nur durch Schmelzwasser und hat eine Tiefe von knapp 600 Metern. Er ist somit der tiefste See Amerikas.

      Mittlerweile haben wir gelernt, dass man in die Parks am besten sein eigenes Essen mitbringt und das improvisierte Picknick war bei diesem Ausblick ein wahrer Genuss!

      Hannah Magnea asked me why the motels we go to all advertise that they are clean. I replied that we always go to the least expensive motels and all we care about is that they are clean.

      Well, actually, it's also good if the air conditioning works ...

      21th november 2019

      After the blanket was pulled up to the neck in the night, it was time to get up!
      And even in this cold, brrrr.
      So a jump into the clothes and fired up the gas stove.
      Only a strong coffee can now drive the cold away. But when the tap was turned on: nothing!
      What happened? Did we forgot to hook up the night before?

      So there was no other way out than to go out in the cold to have a closer look what happened.
      Oh my god, a check on the Airstreams bumber, the place where freshwater comes in, showed in an impressive way how cold the last night was.
      The connector which fits the waterhose was covered by a nearly 4 feet long icicle!
      A beautiful formation created during night by nature
      but also a killer condition regarding the trailers hydrosystem.
      Santos runs a classic house automation system which isn‘t really made for freezy conditions.
      The freezing of plumbing would mean a burst of the pipes 💦
      A nightmare when knowing that everything is installed in the Airstreams subfloor...!

      But we were lucky, only the first inches of inlet were frozen and the hot water from communities restrooms solved the problem.
      45 minutes later the water was running again.

      With a little delay we left the beautiful ‚Crater Lake RV Park‘ with the 100% intention to visit this gem again very soon.

      Early afternoon Santos was towed across the golden borderline of the state of
      ☀️🏄‍♂️CALIFORNIA 🏄‍♀️🌟

      (yes, the village where OR and CA meets is really called ‚Weed‘ 🤣)

      Final destination for today was ‚Mountain Gate RV Park‘ which we choosed as a good point of origin to discover the Lakehead hiking area as well as the city of Redding.      Les mer

      Crater Lake, OR

      Crater Lake est une énorme lac (quasi 10km de diamètre) dans le reste d’un cratère de volcan: Mount Mazama. Il est remplie d’une eau si pure qu’on peut voir a 41m de profondeur ! A cette saison il y a assez régulièrement 3 à 5m de neige.

      Situé à 1 883 mètres d'altitude, le lac du Crater Lake est le plus profond des États-Unis avec une profondeur de 592 mètres.

      Les eaux du Crater Lake sont si limpides qu'il est possible de voir des objets jusque trente-sept mètres de profondeur à l'œil nu. Ses seules sources d'eau sont la pluie et la fonte des neiges. Aucun affluent. Long de 10 km et large de 8 km, ce n'est que sur place qu'on peut y apprécier son effet.

      Né d'une éruption volcanique, le volcan s'est ensuite effondré sur lui-même. Format ainsi le cratère.

      On décide d'abord d'y souper, puis d'y passer la nuit. Personne ne s'y oppose, le parc est ouvert 24h sur 24. Ce qui nous donne la chance d'y voir le coucher de soleil et le lever du soleil.      Les mer

      Auf dem Weg nach Kalifornien

      Da wir dem bitterkaltem Winter in Kanada entfliehen wollten haben wir uns entschieden in die USA, nach Kalifornien zu gehen. Dort haben wir ein Workaway gefunden, bei dem wir der der Olivenernte helfen wollten. Auf dem Weg dorthin machten wir einen kleinen Roadtrip durch zwei Nationalparks.
      Nach einigen Startschwierigkeiten mit dem Grenzübergang und unserem Auto konnten wir endlich loslegen.
      (Der Grenzübergang hat und 4 Stunden und etliche Nerven gekostet, da die Beamten uns mehrfach ausgefragt haben und unser Auto durchsuchten. Sie dachten, dass ich ich mich einmal zu lange in den USA aufgehalten hatte, weil die Kanadier etwas nicht ins System eingetragen hatten und anstatt uns das mitzuteilen brummten sie uns nur an, dass wir warten sollten. Als wir endlich die Grenze passieren durften fuhren wir weiter, doch kurze Zeit später machte unser Auto schlapp und wir mussten in einer kleinen Stadt für zweit Tage bleiben, bis wir alles reparieren konnten. Das wäre uns wirklich lieber noch in Kanada passiert, aber was solls.)
      Aber dann ging es endlich in ein paar NPs, zuerst zum Crater Lake. Hier schauten wir uns den fast ganz runden Kratersee an und machten ein paar kurze Wanderungen.
      Dann fuhren wir weiter zum Redwood NP. Hier gibt es die höchsten Bäume der Welt und die haben wir uns natürlich direkt angeschaut.      Les mer

      Crater Lake National Park besuchen

      Früh am Morgen fuhren Sandra und ich zum Crater Lake Nationalpark. Dort angekommen bemerkten wir, dass keiner den Pass kontrollieren wollte und so konnten wir einfach durchfahren, ohne was zu bezahlen.
      Im Park angekommen schauten wir uns den See von allen Seiten genau und waren begeistert!
      Der See ist durch einen Vulkanausbruch entstanden, der für den früheren Berg so immens war, dass der ganze Vulkan zusammengebrochen ist und ein Krater entstanden ist. Über die Jahre haben sich dort Regen- und Schmelzwasser angesammelt, wodurch der See entstand.
      Mit verschiedenen Wanderungen bestaunten wir den See von all möglichen Seiten und konnten bei einer sogar noch zum See runter, um ein Bad in diesem zu nehmen. Das war super kalt, aber auch sehr cool.      Les mer
