      The beauty of Yosemite

      August 30, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Our few days in Yosemite seemed like a fairly significant time for both my brother and me personally. When trying to understand why, we realized it was not only the amazing beauty in the nature around us, but it was also in the people we met.
Yosemite seems to pull in the best people from near and far! Kind individuals, hungry for a life full of adventure but also full of time to reflect and ask the right questions. So glad to have met you guys!!! And happy to have made a few joint travel plans for the future as well :)

      Yosemite National Park

      June 1, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

The best word to describe Yosemite National Park is "Majestic." It is truly one of kind, take your breath away gorgeous. The sheer size and volume of the rock formations invoke awe and wonder.

The Visitor Center on the east side of the park was closed (if there is one, it's dubious), and the line for the bathrooms was very long because a tour bus had just pulled up. So I skipped the potty, but found gasoline. I was at least partially relieved, since the red light for the gas tank had already come on.

I drove through the park, stopping at every Vista to take photos. The main visitor center is about 1.5 hour drive from the east entrance down in Yosemite Valley.

I made my way to the Visitor Center and found a parking spot. Then I walked more than half a mile to the museum, store, and visitor center... and the bathroom. Some of the shops close for one hour from 12 to 1 for lunch, true government style. But I found the gift shop open and bought a magnet, 2 Tshirts, a hat and a black bear mug for my granddaughter, Addy.

I had warmed my leftovers in the windshield, so when I returned to the car I grabbed my hammock and the food and had lunch hammocking in the Yosemite trees. I have more food than I know what to do with, since I wasn't planning to go home until the 6th. I'm leaving expensive organic peanut butter and previously purchased frozen foods behind at Airbnbs.

Yosemite is about the rock formations and waterfalls. You'll see pictures of several including Half Dome and El Capitan. It was beautiful and I took my time driving through. I only walked about 2 miles though, which was mostly just to the visitor center... but I wasn't feeling very adventurous today. A little more somber... and it was 82 degrees!

The videos are from outside the park... story continues.

      Yosemite National Park

      May 17, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

The drive to Yosemite took a long time, the best part of an hour to the entry gate where we paid our $30 entry for the car, then another 30 minutes or so to a long tunnel though the mountain, then we came out the other end and there was the most amazing view down the Yosemite Valley. From there we went along the road near the Bridalveil Falls, between so many tall trees, yet with amazing views of the falls and also of the rock face known ad El Capitan.

Then down the valley; Luci was keen to explore the far end of the valley first and it was great. After parking we crossed a meadow surrounded by Sequoias, walked through a camping area, then got a little disoriented trying to find the trail to Vernal and Nevada Falls. The directions in the park are in many cases less than clear. So we ended up having a snack at the Happy Isles, which really were just river islands little different from the surrounding country.

From there we wend down river a little and crossed to the northern side and walked up the valley above a raging torrent littered with huge rocks. At a bridge I read about a family who had visited in the summer of 2012. It was a hot day and the mother and her 2 sons paddled in a shallow, quiet area near the bridge. But the sons slipped and were caught by the current. The river battered them between the rocks and they drowned. An average of about 6 people each year ignore the warning signs and drown there.

Further up the Vernal Fall looked amazing, when we got close the spray was thick as we zigzagged beside the fall. And then we were at the top and the view was even more amazing. A little upstream beside a pond with logs and flotsam caught in a gentle whirlpool and the river sliding over a long slope of rock, and this is where we chose to have lunch. A squirrel came by wanting to steal food and a blue woodpecker flitted around in the trees.

This pool was our original destination but we decided to continue up toward Nevada Fall, as far as the john Muir Trail that comes back over the south side of the valley. The views were amazing. When we got to the bottom we decided to continue on to Mirror Lake.
