      San Diego - Surfers Paradise! 🏄🏼‍♀️🌸

      Sit üsem letschte Itrag isch scho wieder vöu Wasser de Colorado River ab, aber üsi Täg si aktuell eifach immer vo Morge bis Abe erläbnisrich und zuesätzlech hemmer i üsem erste Nationalpark, Joshua Tree, kei Empfang gha. Aber aues i de reihe na! Ufghört het üse letschti Itrag in Los Angeles. Die Site, wo mir vo dere Stadt gseh hei, si sehr schön und hollywoodmässig gse! Witer simmer am Tag druf richtig San Diego und si nach 2 Täg früeh ufstah und de ganz Tag umelaufe, nah gsi, für e chillige Tag. Drum hemmer üses Zmorge ganz gemüüüütlich igno. Mir ässe meistens es Müesli mit griechischem Joghurt und Früchte, trinke e Orangejus (Chanti und Nädi) oder es Kaffi (Luisa), mitem stolz koufte Biagletti oder choche amene Sunntig ou mau es Ei 🥚. Üse Camper het zwar inzwüsche sehr vöu z biete, z.B. e Mikrowälle, det transportiere mer aber lieber üse Toaster, wo mer für 10 $ im Walmart kouft hei. De Alex vom Camping in Santa Barbara het das e sehr interessanti Transportart gfunde😂. Platzoptimierig isch sitem Start vo üsem Campingabentür sowieso üsi Houptbeschäftigung Nr. 1!

      Aber ebe, zrugg zu San Diego. Die Stadt het üs vom erste Momänt a fasziniert. Bis zum Strand simmer dür paar richtig cooli Ami-Quartierli gfahre - wie mer das vom Färnseh könnt. De Pacific Beach het üs de ändlech die langersehnte schöne Stunde am Strand bote und mir si sogar im chaute Pazifik go bade. D Luisa het üs s Surfe gründlech erklärt. Und übrigens; D Amis hei Nationalfiertig gha und vieli hei de Tag am Strand verbrunge. De Camping isch nachher richtig luxuriös gsi und het sogar e riese Pool gha, judihui😍. De 4th of July hemmer im heisse Wihrlpool gfiret und üsi Nachbere hei mit Liechter und crazy Deko Gas gä. 🇺🇸

      Am nächste Tag hemmer San Diego erkundet. Gstartet simmer im Balboa Park mit wunderschöne Gebäude und em Spanish Village, si witer uf Downtown is Gaslamp Quartier und de Wolkechratzer und de mitem Schiff uf Coronado Island zu de Riche und Schöne (füre Apéro het üses Budget knapp glänget). Wie sichs so nöch ade mexikanische Gränze ghört, si Tacos ufem Spisplan gstande und ou de Cheesecake ide Cheescake Factory isch himmlisch gseh - d Kalorie ignoriere mer mau.😉🍰 San Diego, du hesch üses Härz🫶🏼🌴🌸🇺🇸🏄🏼‍♀️.       Day 25

      San Diego and Tijuana

      We've spent four days in our final and southernmost destination. The first two days we camped on Silver Strand State beach. A very nice place to camp, almost right on the beach with several miles of beach to walk or jog and enjoy the many shore birds. My favourite was the pelican. I loved watching them hovering and circling about five metres over the ocean and then diving straight into the water for fish.

      During the first full day in San Diego we bought all day metro passes and took the bus into downtown. We walked and shopped and then caught a train out to Fashion Valley, a large shopping centre and shopped some more. We then caught the train back but got off in Old Town to walk around. We also decided to return to Fred's for a Mexican dinner. We had been there before on our last trip to San Diego, about five years ago.

      On the second day, we had to pack up the trailer and move it to the KOA as SS only had room for us for two nights. It was only a 20 minute drive. Before doing so though, we started our day as we have on most days, with a 30 minute run on the beach after coffees.

      After setting up camp at the KOA, we hopped in the truck and drove to the Mexico US border. We parked at a large outlet mall for free instead of paying $15 at the official lot. We had no wait or trouble getting across the border and had a great day, walking along Avenida de la Revolution and up to a large farmers market and shopping centre. We caught a cab back to a spot near the border and did a bit more shopping. Then walked back to the US and shopped in the huge outlet mall where we were parked. On the way back to the KOA we picked up groceries and then had a late dinner back at the campsite.

      Today was our last day, and although it was cloudy decided to go to the beach. We went to Ocean Beach first thinking it was where we were last time in SD. It was busy with a surfing competition going on. We asked and found out we wanted to go to Mission Beach, only a short drive away.

      On arrival at the boardwalk we were approached by a family leaving to catch a plane who had two extra boogie boards they didn't want and offered them to us for a very good price. So, we now had four good boards. We all got out on the water and had a good time catching waves. It wasn't too warm though so we didn't stay as long as we might have otherwise. But it was getting time to make dinner and we had lots to look forward to doing back at the KOA.      Read more

      Day 6

      Off to San Diego

      We are off on our road trip across the US. We are leaving magical Disneyland and heading south to San Diego. We have our car, bought some camping stuff at Target and now need to do get our car roof rack.

      Before our trip we looked at the items we wanted at Walmart.com and we needed to grab a roof bag for the car to hold some of our stuff. We have a bag each, a camping bag, a tent, a stroller and we each have a smaller bag. Add a cooler (esky) and food, a small SUV won't hold it all. Well, none of the 8 Walmart's in the area had the roof bag we wanted. We then went to Pep Boys and we were sold a temporary strap on roof racks along with a roof bag to hold the luggage.

      Josh spent almost an hour in a McDonald's parking lot while Inara slept in the car and Brandon and I had lunch inside. I wonder how many McDonald meals we will have on this trip, as it's easy, cheap and almost everywhere.

      We were driving down the highway I-5 south, only having driven 15 miles, when the bag lifted up, taking the roof racks and luggage with it unto the highway. Luckily we were in the left HOV lane and the van behind us was not riding our butt and was able to swerve. We quickly stopped on the left emergency lane and Josh jumped out to grab our stuff, hoping we didn't lose Inara and Josh's clothes bags.

      It all ended well and the kids were great in the whole ordeal..Brandon even calmed Elisa, saying mommy. "Daddy will be OK, it will be ok", as Josh had to go on the major highway to retrieve the items. A cop even stopped by from the other side of the highway to see if we were OK and if there was an debris left.

      We finally made it to the San Diego Metro KOA, a bit more squished with all the luggage stuffed into the car. A highlight of the day was that the 2 min pop up tent really only took a little over 2 min and Elisa was able to do it on her own. This was a good buy.

      We had a great yummy and cheap Mexican meal that we all enjoyed just a few minutes from the KOA.

      San Diego

      Eigentlich wollten wir zwischen La Quinta und San Diego auf einem Camp-Ground eines National-Forest halt machen und unsere beim Aldi erworbenen Steaks in die Pfanne hauen. Aber daraus wurde nichts: der erste Campground, den wir anschauten, war zwar wirklich schön gelegen, aber die sanitären Einrichtungen waren unter aller Kanone (dreckig). So fiel die Entscheidung leicht, weiterzufahren und unser Glück weiter in Richtung San Diego zu suchen. Und Glück ist in diesem Fall wörtlich zu nehmen, denn aufgrund unserer unvergleichlich präzisen Meilen-/ Gallonenberechnung wären wir fast mit leerem Tank liegen geblieben. Ich (Matthias) war zwar noch sehr entspannt, es kostete aber mehr als nur ein bisschen Überzeugungsarbeit, die kleine nervöse Vanessa davon abzuhalten, den Tank für schlanke 4 Dollar pro Gallone bei nächster Gelegenheit (Assi-Tankstelle im Nirvana) randvoll zu tanken. Aber irgendwie wurden wir uns einig, der Tank ein bisschen voller und wir konnten BEIDE entspannt weiterfahren (so der Plan).
      Daraus wurde aber leider nichts. Denn der nächste öffentliche Campground in Ramona hatte wegen „Tree Maintenance“ geschlossen und somit mussten wir wohl oder übel einfach weiter nach San Diego fahren und dort halt einen Tag frühen unseren (teuren) KOA-Campground aufsuchen. Aber das war eigentlich nicht weiter schlimm, denn damit hatten wir einen Tag gewonnen. Und den werden wir zu nutzen verstehen! Morgen geht`s in den
      Zoo. Es soll der schönste in den USA sein. Und das wollen wir uns nicht entgehen lassen!

      PS: die Fahrt nach San Diego war zwar nicht der direkte Weg. Aber er war mit Sicherheit ein sehr interessanter! Die Landschaft war abwechslungsreich, grün, bergig und erinnerte uns nicht wirklich an das Kalifornien, das wir bisher kannten. Wer die Gegend gesehen hat, wundert sich weder über das dort ansässige Survival-Camp der US-Navy, noch über das dortige Pfadfinder-Quartier. Natur-pur!

      PPS: der KOA Campground befindet sich eigentlich nicht in San Diego, sondern am äußersten Rand von Chula Vista. Aber es trennt ihn nur eine Straße von San Diego, da alles zusammengebaut ist.      Read more
