    • Day 65

Raven Rock Rd / Waynesboro 1064.3

      July 7, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

So, this was supposed to be our first normal day since hiking in to Harper's Ferry. So getting up early worked and we planned to do about 20 miles to another shelter because more rain was supposed to come.
After a few miles into the trail there was a campground upcoming. When hiking by we saw that there was even a shower!! So we took the chance and had breakfast and a hot shower there :) This normal thing now feels like a luxury. Another few miles later came the Washington Monument dedicated to George Washington. The AT led up to this building passing signs with milestones of his life. The monument itself wasn't that impressive and it was too foggy to see anything. At the Visitor Center we had a short break where I chatted with the volunteer that works there. He is the local chief of the democratic party and has relatives in Switzerland and Germany.
After the first 10 miles went pretty good we thought about going to Waynesboro, which would make it more than 25 miles. We set our deadline to 6 PM at the last Shelter, otherwise we'd stay there. Maybe an hour later we got a message from Corn Chip that he has got a hotel room in Waynesboro with a spare bed. So we wouldn't even have to camp at Walmart...
Shortly before it started to get dark we came to an area at the descent which was extremely hard and rocky. We already feared that we have to climb it down in a night hike which would have turned into a nightmare. But we managed to arrive down at our destination just before it got dark!!

On our way into the town we were lucky to get a hitch after about 1.5 miles. After resupplying in Walmart we went to the hotel where a neat room was waiting for us. Happy that we achieved our goal we went to sleep.

Day 5 Raven Rock to Cascade, Md

      April 19 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 46 °F

A shorter day to rest overnight at an amazing hostel with the fun group of hikers we’ve been with since day 1. We are just feet away from the Mason Dixon line, entering Pennsylvania tomorrow morning. Still fun (and challenging)!Read more

      Pennsylvania rambling

      April 20 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Woke up refreshed at the hostel in Maryland and skipped across the Mason Dixon line for 8.6 miles with fully loaded backpacks- heavy with Walmart fresh supplies and goodies. Ups and downs on ridge tops and more mountain streams to cool the feet. 👣 hard to believe in the warm sunshine that it’s supposed to freeze tonight 🥶

Grateful for another warm shower, coffee in bed and Hoody for coming up with a pair of gloves

Day 3 - Smithsburg to Pen Mar

      April 23 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

Was a beautiful day at almost 70° 🌞 hardly any ☁️ coverage. Met up with Explanation for lunch at the Ensign Cowall parking lot where I was kicked out for tenting the other day 😅 Saw local, Don, for the 3rd time who i truly enjoyed talking to. He later saw Explanation again and gave him a wood-carved AT tag for his pack. While there, we got to meet a family of 5 called Lovely and the Tramps, a mother and father hiking the whole trail whilst homeschooling their 3 boys ages 4, 7, and 9. You can follow them at www.appalachiantramps.com! Got another $20 shuttle today from Explanation's trail buddy, Mike, who was very generous and gave me a slice of pizza in Pen Mar and a chicken wing to boot! Patty really liked him and i sensed she was more at ease because she finally ate her breakfast around 6pm outside the Pizzeria 🙏 Sleeping in the car at a trailhead tonight near the Pen Mar Mason-Dixon line. 🌚 Full Moon tonight!
11:30pm Update: got out of the car to go pee, locking the keys, Patty, and my phone in the car behind me. I reluctantly knocked on the door of A house right next to the trail and these 2 ladies were kind enough to help me call Onstar 🙏 thank you <3 and thank God I didn't have to pry or damage anything with a crowbar 😅 looking forward to a zero day on Thursday April 25th. I haven't even hiked but the stink is getting real 😐
