    • Lake Superior HOG Touring Rally Day 3

      July 28, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Despite horrible looking skies, my ride to Bemidji and the eighth 10 Rides for 2022 photo was fairly uneventful. I say fairly because I got pulled over for speeding a couple of miles west of Deer River. I must've been daydreaming because I thought I was going about 5 mph over, but was actually 12 or 13. He ran my license and tag, and with no issues on either, said have a nice day. No citation. Cool.

When I got back to Duluth about 13:30, I went straight to the dealership. My shifter peg started spinning and I don't have tools with me this time. Plus, my rear left tail light isn't working...then it is...then it isn't.... They tightened the peg (I thought it might be stripped, but nope), but they think the light has something to do with my ACC short/fault because the LED bulb was working for them. I have another HD lined up to troubleshoot all of that Saturday.

The rest of the rally rolled in about 16:00-17:00 and we had another nice meal and conversation. They were in probably more rain than I was yesterday and some even hit hail, which I thankfully didn't. But everyone made it unscathed.

I raced back to the hotel about 7 miles away to beat a nasty downpour I really didn't want to get caught in. I dodged rain all day today, hitting some but not for long and not very heavy. Just enough to get you damp, but not enough to mess with my heated gear. Yes, it was 55 when I left the hotel at 07:30 and I don't think it got over 65 all day. The wind chill was cold. Anyway, I made it back and parked under the overhang just in time.

Now, I'm kicking back in the air conditioning because I can't open the window (12th floor). Not a terrible day after all.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

    • Lake Superior HOG Touring Rally Day 2

      July 27, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

I'm off the rally route because I didn't go into Canada over the top of Lake Superior. Instead, I rode from Sault Ste Marie to Duluth today. It was a horrible start with the rain, but by lunch it cleared up. Except it didn't really. As soon as I hit the border of Wisconsin, a heavy rain storm hit me...and I had already take off my rain gear ☹️. I was soaked all the way through, and the temperature wasn't warm enough to dry me off (only 71°F and the wind was cooold!). I still stopped to get my Wisconsin park stamp, but didn't even look around the visitor center. 100 miles later and I still hadn't dried completely when I arrived at the Duluth campground...that I forgot to make a reservation at 🤦. So I wound up at the Radisson via HotWire. Oh well. The ground is soaked, it's way too cold to sleep at night, and there didn't appear to be a laundry room I could sleep in, so I'm better off in a hotel.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

      Day 138 mileage: 506.0 (total 3934.9 + 24568.7)

    • Day 10

      Aerial Lift Bridge¹ MN

      July 11, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

The harbor reported a ship supposed to come through around 11am, so we drove down the island to the park, dropped off the rvs and drove back to the harbor. We showed up about 15 minutes early and were told the ship was delayed. We killed time going through the museum, walking down to the lighthouse, finding pressed pennies and putting our feet in the water. We were thinking about leaving and giving up on the ship when they announced it would just be another half hour, we waited.Read more

    • Day 4

      Duluth

      July 28, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Stopover at the Great Lakes Aquarium was the perfect way to spend the rainy afternoon. We got to pet sharks and jelly fish!

    • Day 10

      Aerial Lift Bridge² MN

      July 11, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We showed up at 10:45am and the ship FINALLY came through at 1:50pm. The 🚢 had some steering issues. The American Spirit was HUGE, over 1000 feet long, it could carry 62,400 tons of iron ore. They had to raise the bridge to its max height of 135 feet.

It was crazy how fast the pier filled once they announced the ship coming into port. After the bridge lowered back into place, I stopped counting at 130 cars coming from the island that were waiting on the ship to cross.

After the ship came through Doug, Weston and I walked across the bridge to get back to the jeep. As we were fixing to go across, a boat needed through and the bridge was raised again. It was awesome seeing it raise from up close.

    • Day 131

      Lakehead Boat Basin

      September 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

Second stop was the visitor center for the Northern Great Lakes. I left Charlie and Tom in the RV for nap time with the generator still running so they could have some cool air. Nice exhibit, and the AC in the center was in great condition!
Another couple of hours and we were in Duluth. We stayed here once before and I really liked it so we came back. We are parked in a marina just down from the lift bridge in this town. We get to see some really big freighters going by and then watch the bridge raise up to allow them to clear. Even most sail boats require the bridge to lift. Weather was miserably hot and humid. Showered, dinner, bed. End of day thank goodness.

    • Day 136

      The "Porkies"

      October 4, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Our RV park was right outside of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (AKA the "Porkies") so we only had a short drive into the park. First stop was the visitor center; still open(!), but only for another week or two. Nice center and surprisingly busy. Got some tips and then went back out and took the jeep off the RV so we could move more efficiently in the park. Ooops, dead battery. Arrrrgh. But we had my little power pack that can actually jump a battery and got it started again.

Drove into the park about 7 or 8 miles to get to the Lake of the Clouds overlook. It was a short walk through the woods filled with color. Stunning overlook, slightly disappointed with the ongoing gray skies, but loved it just the same. Even if we didn't have the blue sky, we could still enjoy the trees turning color.

Back out to the RV and then a long and very bumpy ride through the park on the Southern Boundary road. It was paved, but had been patched and repaired so much that I tried to drive straddling the yellow line. Got to the far western edge of the park and stopped at Presque Isles (not to be confused with the one in Marquette?) for a view of Superior and a waterfall walk. Got to take Auggie this time, only to find out there were a number of stairs to various overlooks which isn't always easy on his old little Corgi legs.

Wish we had more time at this park. Lots of hiking trails and even though the skies are gray, the temperature is perfect for hiking. But we wanted to get to Duluth today. Essentially drove Hwy. 2 through Wisconsin and in into Minnesota. Funny but we both think Michigan was prettier, can't exactly tell you why. Both are wooded, but maybe there are less maples in the Wisconsin woods, so less orange and red?

Got into Duluth about 5 and found this awesome RV park on Google maps. It's an RV park in a marina, which means you are pretty much just in a parking lot. But I am sitting in the front passenger seat of the RV looking (across a small marina and canal) at the Aerial lift Bridge and the lights of Duluth. And I just saw a falling star!

We might have to stay here a little longer than planned!

    • Day 10

      Park Point Beach, MN

      July 11, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

After watching the boat go under the bridge, we drove back to the park and played on the beach. Torri and Weston both got buried, Doug and I went for a walk to hunt sea glass and visited with a lady on the beach, and Pearl played/stayed in the water as much as possible.

We've now been to 4 of the 5 Great Lakes.

    • Day 138

      Aquarium and a Ride

      October 6, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

We really had planned on one night here, but love our spot so much that we have stayed 3 nights! The weather had not cooperated much, but we have enjoyed Duluth.

Spent the morning at the Great Lakes Aquarium. One the larger freshwater aquariums in the states. Exhibits of fish from around here and the Amazon. Included exhibits about the shipwrecks of Superior, and quite a bit about water as a resource. All interesting.

The took a drive up the hill to skyline drive. Duluth in this area is built on the side of a gentle slope so we could get a nice view, just below the clouds. Destination: Enger Tower and the Japanese garden with the peace bell. It almost looked like the clouds (fog) might lift, the sun really tried, but it just didn't happen. Climbed the stairs (5 stories up) any way to get what view I could.

Lunch in the Canal Park area, lots of renovated older buildings with restaurants and shops. Had delicious sandwiches from a smokehouse deli sort of place. Walked the shops a little and then back to RV for our bikes.

Once on our bikes we rode out to Park Point. The harbor of Duluth has this long arm (actually just a very large sand bar) that protects the bay and creates this strip of land that reaches 5 miles to its end with lots of homes on either side of the street we rode on. You live on the lake side or the bay side. Still overcast, we didn't get the sun that we had good would come in the afternoon, but it was still a great fall ride. Only about 10 miles out and back, but fun to be on our bikes!
