      Der Osterhase legt uns ein schönes Ei

      Mit 12 Meilen war es heute ein kurzer Tag, was nicht an meinem verletzten Sprunggelenk oder Jochens Schienbein lag.

      Der Trail nach Boiling Springs war bis auf wenige Ausnahmen sehr gut zu laufen und sehr schonend zu unseren strapazierten Beinen. Erst im hügeligen Wald und später im „Cumberland Valley“ ging es über flache Wiesen bis nach Boiling Springs. Dort sollten zwei Päckchen auf uns warten.

      Wie soll es auch anders sein? Natürlich sind beide Päckchen nicht rechtzeitig zum erwarteten Liefertag angekommen, was vor allem für Jochen besonders schlimm war. Seit 700 Meilen klappt es einfach nicht mit für ihn passenden Schuhen. Für mich wären wasserfeste Kopfhörer dabei gewesen. An sich nicht besonders tragisch. Mit Aussicht auf eine verregnete Woche wäre es aber ganz nett gewesen, sie zu haben.

      Nach einem Stop beim Italiener und einem kurzen Einkauf entschieden wir uns, für 25 $ ins Hostel zu gehen. Leider war zu unserer Überraschung Lisas Hostel entgegen der Beschreibung in unserem Guide (FarOut) mehrere Meilen vom Trail entfernt. Ihr Mann holte uns zwar ab und brachte uns zurück, es schränkte uns aber schon ein wenig ein. Außerdem mussten wir in einer Art Garage ohne Heizung zusammen mit Mäusen übernachten und die Bettbezüge wurden offensichtlich nicht gewechselt.       Day 60

      Da ist ein Hammer! 😳

      Am Ostersonntag gingen Jochen und ich es entspannt an. In einem Café hatten wir ein leckeres Frühstück und kamen mit vielen Einheimischen ins Gespräch.

      Anschließend ging es weiter im „Cumberland Valley“ über Wiesen, Felder und Straßen bis zum „Cove Mountain Shelter“. Aus den Kommentaren von FarOut wussten wir, dass wir dort nicht alleine sein würden.

      Ein junger Obdachloser, der sich als Wanderer ausgibt und sich selbst als Mr. Freeze bezeichnet, hat dort seit mehreren Tagen eine feste Bleibe gefunden.

      Auch ohne die Kommentare in FarOut hätten wir sofort gewusst, dass er kein Wanderer ist. Wer geht denn bitte mit einer Decke und einem Zimmermannshammer wandern? Ja, Zimmermannshammer!

      Als wir dort spät ankamen, war es im Shelter still. Offenbar nutze aber nun ein weiterer Obdachloser das Shelter als Bleibe. Dieser roch sehr streng nach Bier und Wurst. Dazu kam noch ein tierischer Mitbewohner (sah wie ein Biber aus, war aber keiner), dessen Absicht es war, das Shelter zum Einstürzen zu bringen. Das Geräusch war dazu furchtbar laut!

      Insgesamt war es einfach nur unheimlich.
      Mit viel Unbehagen lagen wir uns einfach dazu, in der Hoffnung in Ruhe gelassen zu werden.      Read more

      Day 10/11 Welcome Break in a Hote

      Over the last couple days, we did a some higher mileage days. We did our last miles in the beautiful Michaux Forest and said hello to Cumberland Valley, which meant leaving forests and boulders and entering pastures. Both are extremely beautiful in their own way. We are seeing all phases of Spring, including many wildflowers and energetic birds. Right now I am enjoying doing laundry in a hotel gifted by my brother David (thank you!). A well-deserved break as we hit 100 plus miles.Read more

      Cruising to Carlisle, Pennsylvania,

      April 7,

      We left home at 8:00 am. It was windy and cold, and snow covered!

      We took highway 401 west to the Thousand Islands Bridge, then highway 81 to Carlisle, Pennsylvania. We arrived here around 5:00. A good drive, except for some snow in the Syracuse area, but the roads stayed bare. The Rialta ran smoothly all the way. (Feeling thankful!)

      As expected, the Pennsylvania roads were bumpy and full of potholes. We kept hearing strange noises in the back of the Rialta as we hit the bumps. Finally, we realized what it was. We have brought a toy for Alex and Thalia's cat, Amelia. It has a motion sensor, so every time you move it, you hear the sound of singing tropical birds and jungle noises. So every time we hit a bump, this is what we heard! Those birds sang all through Pennsylvania!

      Traffic was light and few trucks were on the road. Love travelling on a Saturday!

      We are staying at the Sleep Inn in Carlisle. $82.00, including breakfast! And, how handy, it is right beside a Cracker Barrel! Looking forward to a good sleep tonight!

      Day 10–11

      Day 8 - Pine Grove to Boiling Springs

      April 28 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

      Explanation left the Ironmasters hostel to get back on trail the next morning. 🌄 Not wanting to sit around waiting for a shuttle, i spent 2 hours Doordashing around Carisle (36$), then got a request from a return customer to get picked up in Boiling Springs and dropped back at Ironmasters in Pine Grove (35$). After several unsuccessful calls to hostels regarding work-4-stay or even a space available, I took Patty back to Boiling Springs to get some sunshine by the creek and watch the fly fishermen and families enjoying their Sunday 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 ❤️ 🌞 I'm considering going home, as Patts is not having an easy time being in the car so much, and shuttling outside the hiker bubble has been less lucrative than anticipated. It's 75° and clear for the evening, so we are sleeping in the car at a trailhead tonight, this time, with the sunroof open. 🌠😴☪️Read more

      Days 9/10 nero/zero BSprings to Carisle

      On Monday the 29th, Explanation's Achilles tendon had become swollen and painful to walk on. It is best to nurse these things sooner rather than have to get off trail due to a worse injury. So, after he walked 6 miles through Boilings Springs and reached his 💯 th mile since starting in Harper's Ferry, we stayed at the Super 8 in Carisle for 2 nights, icing and stretching appropriately. Today, he sets off again from mile 1126.7 with intentions of shortening his stride and doing 12 miles to Darlington Shelter. He will keep me posted as I continue to Doordash and wait for shuttles, in case he needs more rest. I doordashed yesterday because all the shuttle requests I've been getting have been about 40 miles south of us and are too costly for hikers or myself.
