      Onwards to Central Vermont

      September 8, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

In the morning, Bob made some eggs, shredded root vegetables, and spinach and arugula salad. Good way to start the day, thanks Bob! Then I lent Anderson a hand with leak testing the plumbing we had installed the day before. After fixing a few leaks, the pump primed and pressurized the lines. The water supply system was working and the wiring mostly done. Next step I'm bummed to miss is the spray foam, cooool. I know it doesn't take much.

After a good mornings worth of work it was time for lunch! Kate made puffed pastry stuffed with sauteed onions and red pepper.... Yeah and she made the pastry from scratch! Shortly after lunch I helped Lane and Bob put up some flashing on the other house that was being worked on. An intense finger work out.

Then it was time to leave some more wonderful people behind. I'm constantly asking myself if this is the right choice. Despite the difficulty I'm still ready to find out via trial, and hopefully not error.

The next stop put me in Plainfield VT, with Karl and Mary! It was also a good time to test my mileage capacity. On the way to Plainfield I ran out of gas in my main fuel tank, and switched to the tank reserve. The reserve I think is about a half gallon, which should get me close to 25 miles. I hit the reserve fuel at 184 miles, which is good but I was hoping for closer to 200 miles. After switching to the reserve, I arrived at the Bissex homestead at about 200 miles on the entire tank.

Every stop I've made along the way has been fantastic with different settings and small groups of friends. This visit was no different. Upon arrival, after going through the end of the day routine, I joined Mary Judy and Karl to dismantle and prepare basil for some delicious pesto that covered the pasta dinner. Fresh tomatoes, carrots, and some warmed bread on the side and that makes a damn fine meal.

After dinner Karl and Mary and I went outside to look at an amazing sky. The stars were bright despite the moon, and we saw several shooting stars. The most I've seen this summer. Post star gazing I found myself in a hot tub. A great way to begin a really long time riding a motorcycle. I think I'll book end the trip with a hot tub at the other end.

The pictures below are as follows: The view out of the back yard just before I left. The sunset the night before. An extremely large batch of primo pesto for pasta. A presto action shot!

      Mt Ethan Allen

      September 22, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

I'm over the Hump. I stayed at Montclair Shelter about 1.5 miles down the Trail. Place was like a fortress. They had a lot of bear problems last year. Not so now. My day started later as I only have 8 miles to hike to the next shelter. From the shelter I climbed a mile straight up to the top of Ethan Allen, where I sit now looking at this view. I can slow down, because I'm right on schedule and the terrain will mellow out.Read more

      Cabin life

Fell asleep in the trees with the stars above and lightening bugs under. It was quite the fireworks show 🎇

      Top of the Hump

      September 21, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Finally made it. Wasn't real steep, just long. The downhill is supposed to be harder. Perfect day to be up here. I can see Madison where I came from and Ethan Allen where I will be tomorrow. I'm stopping at the next shelter 1.5 miles away to slow down a bit. Can't tell from the small pictures. I think that is Madison out there.Read more

On the road from Syracuse to Stowe

      August 9, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Yesterday was a 6 hour drive from Syracuse, NY to Stowe, VT for the next hashing adventure. It was 250 miles of beautiful forested mostly two lane backroads, passing through many cool little towns in upstate New York. The final hour or so was through similar roads in Vermont.

Stowe is actually a winter ski haven, but has also become a summer getaway region with tons of hiking trails and craft breweries, small shops, and various restaurants. Very nice area to hang out for a couples days, while I get the opportunity to hash with the Burlington H3 tonight, about an hour away. More on that tomorrow after the hash.

I probably should have stopped to take more scenic pictures, but in many cases there was no place to pull off the road . . . so all the photos are from behind the wheel.

      Ben and Jerry’s, VT

      August 5, 2013 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

      Geo: 43.8514, -69.6283

      Weather: low 70s and sunny

Casual wake up and breakfast in the hotel. Free breakfast again! Gotta love that. Hotel-wise, you win some, you lose some. This one wasn't terrible but to not for the memory books. Paul called it the Quality Inn the lobby and breakfast room only. Go for cheap, feel cheap.

Off to...Ben & Jerrys!!! Ice Cream before noon! Life is good. What a fun place. We took the tour of the factory and had a tasting of their salty caramel ice cream. Oh my. Yummy. Then Matty and I had some chocolate peanut butter heaven in a cone, Daddy and E got a raspberry smoothie and Ben got a Cherry Garcia. Fun morning.

Today we were on our way to Boothbay Harbor, Maine. 6 hour drive. Big driving day. Along the way, we did stop in Montpelier, Vermont's state capital. Paul and the boys played catch on the lawn of the Capital building while Elizabeth and I sat on a bench chatting until...remember the raspberry smoothie?... until Elizabeth decided my white pants needed some color. Happy dance. Got most of it out grumbling along the way. We are living out of the trunk of the van. Wouldn't you grumble a little?
We went inside the Capital Building to browse around. It is the only capital building that doesn't have security. You can wander all over the building even when senators are there voting. Weird. It was very cool to see the House and Senate Chambers. They appeared to have the original desks and chairs that they sit at or at the least, very old. We got a stamp from the Sergeant at Arms saying we visited the capital. Apparently there is a booklet in which you collect stamps from the S at A at each capital building. A woman in front of us bought the last one. Would you believe she was from MIchigan? We had him give us a stamp on a business card to stick in the book when we find one.

Then the drive of all drives. The roads are windy and rolling. Barf. I napped part of the way. I get car sick. The kids watched a couple of movies. Quiet. Ahhh. We drove and drove and drove some more. We left Vermont behind and wound our way across New Hampshire.

Around 7 PM we finally reached Boothbay Harbor Maine. What a cute and beautiful little town. Exactly what you'd picture Maine to be. Beautiful blue water filled with sailboats and fishing boats. Homes lining the shores and restaurant decks dotting the shoreline in between. We rented a cottage at Harborfield Inn. It is a cute cedar shaker cottage on the more rustic side over-looking Boothbay. Beautiful. Perfect.[PHOTO_ID_L=dinner-at-the-lobster-dock.jpg] Before we settled in, we drove back into town and had dinner at the Lobster Dock as suggested by our cottage neighbor next door, Rick and his two dogs, Riley and Clover. It was also quite Mainely perfect. A lobster shack (nicer casual) where you order up live lobster and they cook it right there. We had lobster, mussels in wine sauce, calamari, corn on the cob and sangria. Perfecto!

Now we've settled in here for a couple nights. Looking forward to what tomorrow brings. Too busy to miss home right now. We just keep moving forward in our adventure to see our beautiful country. I can't believe I'm saying this but this is as great or better than Italy. Our country is so beautiful.
