I'll use the last footprint to wrap up the trip. The excitement and energy of the trip really peaked with finishing the C2C trail. On Monday I took the train from Grosmont down to London with transfers in Middleborough and York. Everything went very seamlessly with only short connections. I arrived at King's Cross station which is close to the Royal British Library. They have a rotating exhibit of interesting items in their collection so I popped in for half an hour behaving heading down to Lambeth. The items of interest to me were original manuscripts of musical pieces by Hayden and Mozart in their own writing. I saw a McLaren on the way to the RBL. I think they permanently park one there as there was one parked there last time I was in London. After the RPL I headed off to St. Monica house, a convent offering accommodations. It was great. Very clean and quiet and a mix of tourists from Australia and medical patients from Malt. Malta does not offer pediatric cardiac surgery or brachytherapy. Lots of people to visit with. I was just exhausted so I think I went to bed at 9 pm. Hiking for 2 weeks is very tiring.
Next day I headed off to a very large conference in the east end of London at the Excel centre. The conference was on biogenetics with implications for treatment and diagnosis. There was even an interesting talk on pharmacogenetics- analyzing a patient 's genome can reveal interesting information regarding response to therapies for depression and many other disorders. We in the lab are going to be hit with a tsunami of demand for molecular testing. Tuesday night I headed out to the Prince Edward theatre for the Michael Jackson musical. Not much of a plot but some incredible singing and dancing.
With only two days left, it was difficult to decide what to do. I have had multiple previous trips to London so I have done many of the major sites. I have never visited Bletchley Park home to the WW2 codebreakers but I have read books about the Enigma coding machine and various fictional books set in Bletchley Park. I also enjoyed the movie The Imitation game about Alan Turing. Although it doesn't make the top 50 things to do around London I really enjoyed visiting the site and casting my eyes on such an important point in history. They feel that the codebreakers at Bletchley park's work shortened the war by 2 years because the information was so important that they were able to obtain.
My last day Thursday, I spent on a guided trip of Oxford and two small towns in the Cotswold. It was a passive way of sightseeing. After 2 weeks it was nice just to follow the guide. Highlights was a visit to Jesus college-courtyard, chapel and dining hall, viewing a chalkboard of Einstein's math notes and walking around Oxford. A day was only enough to scratch the surface. One could easily spend a week here.
I am now on my WestJet flight home. It has been an awesome trip but I am looking forward to going home and seeing Cheryl and the kids.Baca lagi
