• Kingsway Tourist Park - Madeley

    9 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Pitching tents for two nights at the Kingsway park. We made it here with a minute to spare before the office closed but lovely people and good rates. We have sites just next to the camp kitchen with all mod cons. Allan’s bike will get a new front tyre tomorrow and Neil will wash clothes and look for a more waterproof bag.Leggi altro

  • Kingsway - day 2

    10 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Today is cold wet and windy interspersed with the odd bit of sunshine. We woke to the sound of kookaburras this morning instead of the crows that have been our companions since we crossed the WA border. Allan has had the front tyre replaced so all set to go north and find the sun. I have decided to solve the water ingress issue on my clothes bag with heavy duty garbage bags so we will see how that goes. Washing and drying is done. We may have a Margaret River red with dinner this evening and spend sometime in the heated ‘rec’ room. The video is of the hail falling while we sheltered under the kitchen roof.Leggi altro

  • Geraldton

    11 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Made it to warmer climes... still a lot of water around but all good for the farmers. Found Phil and Ros’s house. Lovely dinner with lots of discussion on a wide range of interesting topics. Awoke next morning to steady rain. We should really call this trip the ‘drought assistance tour’. Bit of luxury to be able to get organised and load the bikes in a dry garage though. Phil cooked us a delicious breakfast of bacon, eggs and tomatoes - great to start the day.Leggi altro

  • Billabong

    12 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Interesting trip up from Geraldton. We all decided to go without the wets - just before Northampton it bucketed down and we stopped at a small ‘roadhouse’ to get out of the rain and reconsider. The old guy serving said they had ‘sh*t loads’ of rain over the last 3 days (~100mm). The rain eased off so we continued in the same gear which dried off under cloudy skies up to Billabong. Northampton has some lovely old buildings and looks a nice place to stay. The Billabong Homestead Hotel had a stubby holder so Allan bought one for the collection- have to get them while you can.Leggi altro

  • Carnarvon

    12 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Arrived in Carnarvon after 4pm and quickly found the Outback Oasis Park and set up tents before it got dark. Cooked up a chicken stir fry for dinner as the camp kitchen is well resourced here. Added another animal warning sign to the list - water birds- pretty strange given it has been really dry up here for ages. The only significant water we saw was in the Murchison river, the others are just sand. It is such a large country- today it really was straight road heading to the horizon with few corners. At the top of each rise you just see more road stretching on before you. We can probably say that we are a third of the way round in a distance sense as we have now covered 5300km. Will add some photos in the morning.Leggi altro

  • Nanutarra

    13 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The camp for the night is not quite halfway between Carnarvon and Port Headland. Tomorrow’s run will be about 500km. Nanutarra is on the Ashburton river which at present is a series of water holes. Crossed the Tropic of Capricorn and entered the Pilbara. Termite mounds appeared along the road for many kms but have now disappeared. Sharing the road with many caravans , RV’s and roadtrains.Leggi altro

  • Just past the turn off to Whim Creek

    14 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ 🌫 28 °C

Very scraggly shrubs with red dirt in between up to Karratha then grass lands with few trees right off into the distance. Grasses 20 to 30cm tall. Some low hills close to the road but also in the distance. Wanted to say that we took the trip on a whim so so wonder we ended up that creek but missed the turn off.Leggi altro

  • Port Hedland

    14 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Made it to the Discovery caravan park. More evidence of mining the closer you get to Port Hedland and dirt is ‘ redder’ if that’s a word. PH is much more spread out than I thought it would be and hoping we get a chance to see a bit more of it before we leave for Eighty Mike beach in the morning. Dinner tonight was jacket potatoes with coleslaw and couscous & veg mix and meat patties. Picture is a view over ‘pretty pool’ to the south from the campsite. The pool is certainly not full - someone was saying last night that there hasn’t been a decent ‘recharge event’ for the aquifers since 2006. Anyway the town is here for the Iron Ore.... and trains pulling long long lines of trucks loaded with ore arrive all day and height it seems. The ore is then reloaded onto bulk carrier ships.Leggi altro

  • Eighty Mile Beach

    15 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Travelling up from PH I was struck by a feeling that the hills beside us were tired from age and worn down from the weight of years. They seemed to be frowning on us. Then there were just piles of rocks laying close to ground level - all that was left of a once much larger hill. It really is an old weathered country. You get to the Eighty Mile beach caravan park through Wallal Downs Station. 10 kms of dirt road off the highway that was challenging for all bike and rider combinations although for different reasons. Pitched camp and then down to the beach with the bikes for a test of our sand riding skills- in my case they were nonexistent. Tide was well out but the sunsets are reputed to be beautiful so I’ll add a picture if I can get one. sunset and sunrise photosLeggi altro

  • Broome

    16 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Ah we have arrived at the heart of the pearl coast. Sunny 30 degrees. Clear blue skies. Pitched tents at a very busy Broome Caravan park under a palm tree in the overflow area. The site is conveniently located within walking distance of Matsos Brewery. Photo of inside my tent - Clancy of the overflow it isn’t but its home. Found Matso’s Brewery and met up with Emily and Nick so all is good.Leggi altro

  • Broome 2.5

    17 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Continuing on here as ran out of photo room. The new essential piece of kit I bought from Bunnings (yes!!! In Broome!) today - a chair. Unfortunately just missed the sunset at Cable beach... well maybe next time... saw the camels leaving.... dinner at Son Ming very retro Chinese’s restaurant along side ”the worlds oldest picture gardens”! The lady running the restaurant said her forebears came here over a hundred years ago.Leggi altro

  • Willare Bridge roadhouse

    18 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Willare bridge, ski lake, Cockatoo creek some decent stretch of water under the bridges. Massive roadworks ~12km on way here, verges at least as wide again as the tarmac.
Willare bridge is last of three which is a large civil engineering solution around raised roadways and flood containment/ redirection levy banks... it must really rain here at some time. More baobab trees in the flood plains and along the roads. A few huge multi trunk ones. Road trains hauling cattle now instead of iron ore. Many trucks as we are now in Kimberly beef country. Passed Kimberly Meat Co. abattoir but also cattle trucks heading past.Leggi altro

  • Fitzroy Crossing

    18 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Second half of the day picked up cloudy skies so hot and humid when we arrived at the Tarunda Caravan Park on the west side of the river. More roadworks after the Derby turn off. Seems WA Roads burn the brush either side of the highway at regular intervals - just to about 50mtrs from the road mostly. Lots of burnt patches along the way. At a roadside stop met some interesting characters on two bikes and a road train ferrying tanker trailers to Broome. They had a ‘brew’ break and went on their way. Allan and I swapped bikes for a while which was interesting. Also interesting was dinner concocted from our stores plus random bits from the local IGA. Picture shows Allan washing up in what is a reasonably appointed kitchen. I will add photos of bridge and river etc. tomorrow. Sunrise at Fitzroy.Leggi altro

  • NGumban cliffs

    19 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Off the plains if only for a look see. Turns out that these cliffs seem to mark the edge of an escarpment and we are now higher off the earlier plain. The road also seems to be continuously rising as we get closer to Halls Creek. Hard road - even the toys loose their tyres.Leggi altro

  • Warmun roadhouse - Turkey Creek

    20 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Just amazing scenery on the twisty road through hills. Passed the Ord river. There must be an Australian name for the plains interspersed with gums pretty much evenly placed and continuing off to the hills. Hills sparsely treed on the sides with trees dotted along the top ridge- rather than just use ‘savannah’ or ‘veldt’ or ‘plain’.Leggi altro
