    Baldwin Street

Baldwin street is promoted as the steepest residential street in the world. It is steep, and those able to walk up the street did so. One in our group had a delivery to make to a house at the top of the climb. She successfully delivered the package. Luckily it rarely snows here in Dunedin.

FUN FACT- Baldwin Street holds the Guinness book world Record for the steepest street. It has a gradient of 19 degrees for most of the 350 meter stretch and tops out at 21 degrees on the last bit. The street is concrete as in the summer months asphalt would just melt and slide down.

    Larnach Castle

This castle (big house) was completed in the late 1800s. The landscaping started when the house was finished and it is much nicer now that the trees have grown. We had a guided tour of the place that included stories of scandal and betrayal. There is a nice view from most of the rooms in the house and some stairs to a turret that gives a 360 vista.

Hello Dianne and Tom, I was finally able to get back in to your findpenguins.com account - and have had a great deal of fun looking at your photos and journal accounts of Australia and New Zealand. It has been a fabulous and very intensive tour you have been on. Very few will have seen as much of Australia and New Zealand as you have! I especially liked the photos from Queensland and Sydney. And of course, I have always thought that New Zealand is a mini-Canada with warmer weather in the north and more vegetation. We especially liked the Queenstown and Milford Sound area and Christchurch on the South Island and .... Rotorua and Waitomo Glowworm Caves on the North Island. Enjoy the rest of your travels. See you in April. We had a lovely lunch yesterday - but missed you. Today I saw Jan- she has very sore legs but is hopeful that this treatment will help the calcium deposits in the tendons of her legs. Brad and I fly to Brisbane on Monday. We are very excited to see our friends - 2 who are also celebrating birthdays - and experience Queensland and Straddie Island. Fondly, Anni

Penguins and Seals at Natures Wonders

An opportunity to visit a private wildlife sanctuary is part of our tour. According to the owner, this place is very special. You are guaranteed to see wild seals and penguins. The property has been in the family for generations and they have a commitment to wildlife preservation. Perry, our guide and the patriarch of the family is a PT Barnum like promoter of the business. We drove around in a small bus, hiked a bit and got to see seals and penguins. The seals were very natural but the penguins lived in what looked like private apartments. Private until the door was opened and voila, your penguin life is on full display to the paparazzi. Maybe they get a good deal on rent.

    Albatross Express

It is a stormy aboard the Albatross Express. Getting pictures of the birds and dolphins proved challenging because it was rough and hard to focus. If you take enough pictures, you are bound to get lucky sometime. Dianne stayed on the lower deck throughout the voyage and was happy she had taken gravol.

    Ōamaru

Wrinkly Ram was our lunch spot, and now that I look at the pictures of Ōamaru, I think the place looks a little creepy. It starts with the big clown face and ends with rough looking ewe. The people were friendly, like we have come to expect, but if our photo portfolio of Ōamaru was in a brochure, we would give it a skip for sure.

    Mount Cook (Aoraki) Village

When we arrived here you couldn’t see much of the surrounding mountains, but as the afternoon and evening wore on the sky became more visible. Lake Tekapo is located in Mount Cook National Park and the village of Mount Cook I located on its shore. We walked to a stone chuch that overlooks the lake and behind the alter is large windows with a view of both the lake and the mountains.

Scenic Flight to Mount Cook Aoraki

This morning we woke to a cloudless sky and unlimited visibility. Good news, as we have a scenic flight planned to Mount Cook and the glaciers nearby. Our larger group is divided into smaller groups for three flights. Dianne and I along with our travel partners Liz and Alan join others on board a Cessna Grand Caravan for the journey. Our pilot is not young. He has about 11000 hours in both helicopters and fixed wing, and I don’t feel the need to ride along side of him for safety. The aviation weather forecast is for light winds and our pilot takes advantage of this and is able to fly close to the mountains. There is virtually no turbulence to scare people more than the proximity to the daunting peaks.

    Last day in Christchurch

It isn’t immediately evident that Christchurch is still recovering from the 2011 earthquake, because there isn’t any ruins. It has all been carted away and paved over or repaired. The exception to this is the Christchurch cathedral. It is still a work in progress as local people try to raise the funding for repairs. A temporary cathedral has been constructed and we all were impressed by the sensibility of it. It has the aura of a cathedral but is obviously less expensive than any other we’ve seen.

We enjoyed a final meal, a few laughs and lots of stories with our friends. A wonderful group of people to travel with and hopefully we will keep in touch.

    Airbus 380

The day has arrived, time to start for home. We have booked ourselves on Emirates Airbus 380! What a treat, It our first experience on the A380 and it is a nice airplane. We were seated close to the front; I could see the flight deck from my seat. The flight was smooth, and the service was great. In the last five weeks, we have sampled Air Canada, Jetstar, Virgin, Qantas, and now Emirates. The best service in Economy class is Qantas, We flew Premium economy on Emirates and that service better than Air Canada business class. Whoa, did I say that out loud!

    Last thoughts

New Zealand was an excellent destination for travel. I heard the expression “New Zealand, the way it used to be!” That seems accurate. The highways are mostly two lanes, one in each direction. The bridges in the country are mostly one lane. You yield to traffic on the bridge. The roads invariably go right through the centre of town, never around it. People are friendly and accommodating. I do not find it surprising that I get along with Kiwis when I meet them in my travels to other parts of the world. We have a lot in common.

In New Zealand we covered almost 3480 km.on the bus! Yikes, no wonder we feel tired! That is a lot of time on a bus…..however to see what we did it was better than driving ourselves!

Here are a few catchy words/phrases we learned.

Sweet as ( I love this one)
    Chur - Thanks or Cool
    Jandles- flips
    Choka - full, really busy
Ya Na - Polite agreement, but basically disagree
    Sprog - ankle-biters
