    Santiago - day 1 arrival

    April 2, 2024 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Arrived in Santiago after a very long flight and feeling very tired by the time I reached my hotel via public transport that provided and insight into the city. Too early for check-in so a bag drop and then a walk for an initial explore of the neighbourhood - Santa Lucia Hill and Plaza de Armas.Read more

  • Santigo - really day 1

    April 3, 2024 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Found some very good coffee to kick start my wanderings, past the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, over the Rio Mapocho through Barrio Bellavista with amazing street art everywhere bringing much colour to the neighbourhood, and finally to Casa Pablo Neruda, 'La Chascona'. Neruda was a beautiful poet who led an eccentric and politically active life, reflected in the house he built among the rocky base of Cerro San Cristobal.
Then a ride in the funicular to the top of the hill.

  • Santiago street art

    April 3, 2024 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Being a city on the edge of a desert, it can use some artful colour ... and you don't even need to pay to go into a gallery or museum to see the brilliant street art!

  • Santiago - market, churches and museums

    April 4, 2024 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Beautiful blue sky day today, perfect for some walking and exploring. The Plaza de Armas was lively today, the central market (the centre of which is mainly seafood) was stinky but full of friendly people happy to chat, and the museums too plentiful to choose. However, I had to see the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, which documents the 11 Sep 1973 military coup when Chilean life changed dramatically, to become a time of execution, torture, detention, raids, suppression and intervention into media and universities. But it also reflects on the experiences of many other countries where human rights have been abused.Read more

  • Concha y Toro winery, Maipo Valley

    April 5, 2024 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Perfect day for a day trip out of the city to visit the biggest winery in Chile - Concha y Toro. They have massive acreage on the flats of the Maipo Valley where they mainly grow cabernet sauvignon graps, and they also have land in other regions that best suit each grape variety. We jad a short tour of the property, then all tried three wines. Then three of us had a sommelier guided tasting of four premium wines - definitely worth the small extra cost.Read more

  • Puerto Natales

    April 7, 2024 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

Everywhere you go here, people seem happy. A peaceful town where everyone lives in harmony, even the street dogs. Many people talk of coming from other places with no intention of staying, but now have no intention of leaving. Had a great yoga today in a room full of positive energy from the group, and hitcheda ride back into town afterwards.Read more

  • Torres del Paine W Trek - day 1

    April 8, 2024 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

Day 1: Early start and bus ride from Puerto Natales to the Torres del Paine National Park. We caught a catamaran from Lago Grey Hotel up the lake towards Grey Glacier, which is the southern tip of the Southern Patagonian ice field, the world's second largest extrapolar ice field. We then walked through low beech forests - much of which was destroyed by fire in 2011 - and along rocky river gorges with condors cruising above, until we reached the Refugio Paine Grande on the shore of Lago Pehoe.Read more

  • Torres del Paine W Trek - day 2

    April 9, 2024 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Today we walked around 22km, from Refugio Paine Grande, up the Valle Frances, all the way to Britanico and back to encampment Frances for the night. A long and at times challenging walk, but we all made it happily and enjoyed some stunning scenery along the way. Such a good day!Read more

  • Torres del Paine W Trek - Day 4

    April 11, 2024 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Sad to have only made it halfway along the trail to the Torres del Paine, needing to save my feet for more hiking still to come. But what I saw was stunning, and the rest of the group enjoyed perfect weather to reach the Mirador del Torres.Read more

  • Perito Moreno glacier

    April 14, 2024 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Unlike most glaciers, the Perito Moreno glacier continues to grow rather than retreat. The face of the glacier is up to 70 metres high in some places, 30km long and 5km wide. It's quite humbling to be so close and watch large chunks calve off while thunderous cracks and moans echo through its ice.Read more

  • El Calafate to El Chalten

    April 15, 2024 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Around 2.5 hours on the bus to the small frontier town of El Chalten. The path to the Chorrillo del Salto waterfall was an easy 4km each way, a popular spot to sit and contemplate Pachamuma's beauty.

  • El Chalten day 3 - Laguna de los Tres

    April 17, 2024 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Another perfect weather day for hiking, today along the track towards Cerro Fitz Roy (3405m) - about 11 km each way.
Apparently, this skyline is referred to as 'the logo' as it's the basis of the Patagonia clothing brand.
Tried to get a reasonably early start, as it's definitely not a walk to be rushed. And meeting many nice people along the way.

  • Buenos Aires wander

    April 20, 2024 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

With no particular plans for a few days in BA, day 1 was spent wandering along grand avenues and around broad green plazas.

  • Buenos Aires day 2 - San Telmo

    April 21, 2024 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

In 1989, we spent some lazy hours drinking in a bar called El Balcon. I didn't expect to find it on this trip, but someone recommended a visit to San Telmo for the Sunday antique, art and craft market. Could have spent the whole afternoon browsing here.Read more

  • Buenos Aires day 2 - Palacio Barolo

    April 21, 2024 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Palacio Barolo is a beautiful art deco office building completed in 1923. Its design was based on Dante's Devine Comedy; 100 metres tall, one metre for each canto, and 22 floors divided into 3 sections that represent hell, purgatory and paradise, with many symbolic features incorporated in the decor. The lighthouse at the top was never used for navigation but, as part of the design, was a light beaconing to heaven.Read more
