    Landed and home

    9 czerwca 2018, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

After a delayed departure due to a warning light that needed ground engineers to clear, we had a good flight, bit bumpy at times, in a B787-9. Seats ok but not as comfortable as Air India, food and service below average.
Landed on time then had to wait to get into our gate. We got through passport and baggage in record time just 30 minutes from plane to wait for our taxi home. Weather just like we had left in Calgary.

  • Canmore and Calgary Airport

    8 czerwca 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Sunny start promising warmth we left Banff which we enjoyed very much, towards Canmore. Here we stopped for a walk along the Bow River and over old railway bridges built for the coal extraction which reached a peak in 1914. Beautiful day and we really liked Canmore-could spend more time here.
Coffee in the Mountain Merco and a visit to the gift shop and art gallery. We then took our lunch by the river before hitting the 1 towards the airport and home. 27 degrees this afternoon so the weather has really warmed up.
    Great trip - best ever?!

Here are a few pages I managed to fill during our Canadian adventures.

  • Banff Gondola & Hot Springs

    7 czerwca 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

The weather was very fine for our trip up Sulphur Mountain in the gondola. We were booked for 11.10 though arrived early and went straight up 800 m gain in height. The views on the way and from the top were a breathtaking panorama. It was warm up there too. We wandered around soaking up the views. A got the paints out with L Minnewanka in the distance.
We had lunch just before descending which interested a ground squirrel who ran up Janet’s leg to get at a sandwich- obviously hadn’t read the warnings!
Down below we visited the Upper Hot Springs for a relaxing dip.
We concluded our last full day out with a drive up Mt Norquay to give the view back towards Banff from the other side and then along past Vermillion Lakes before heading back to pack and finish off various bottles and cans.
    A great stay.

  • L Minnewanka & Banff AB

    6 czerwca 2018, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Complementary breakfast in our hotel then off to Lake Minnewanka via the loop with big horn sheep on the way. We arrived early to check in so had 20 mins or so for a sketch of the lake.
The cruise was good, about an hour, with interpretation from Marshal all the way. No wildlife though, only hikers, despite the grizzly warnings. And swallows nesting on the ticket office.
After we stopped by Two Jacks where there were more big horn sheep chewing the road(no wonder there are potholes) and chance for another sketch. Back via Tunnel Mountain loop and lunch on our balcony accompanied by ‘ construction ‘ on the adjacent junction.
Park distillery tour next, with chance to see they are branching into Whiskey soon. Cookies from the hotel before a walk round Marsh loop, the other side of the river, which involved a street market with more gone, this time Wildlife, to be tasted ( which made up for the absence of the furry kind)!
A relapsing jacuzzi bath with Henkel bubbles almost rounds off the day.

  • Bow Summit & L Louise

    5 czerwca 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Bright sunny start, if cool, at Deer Lodge so we decided to head back up the 93 to Bow Summit where the snow had wiped out the views the day before. On the way a bear jam result in mum and cub by the road. As we pulled away there was another just a few metres along.
The summit car park was busy and still snowed up in parts. The view point was busy but awesome, however we then went on to an upper view almost on our own and with spectacular view of L Peyto and surrounding mountains. The spring flowers were just appearing which added to the interest.
We set off back to L Louise where we went for a stroll alongside the turquoise lake with views of Mt Victoria before returning to the Chateau where we were booked for afternoon tea. Nathan looked after us very well as we celebrated our Ruby anniversary trip in style. The views of the lake, glacier and mountains changing by the minute as the sky cleared.
From there it was a short drive down the 1 to Banff where we checked in to our Lodge Suite - amazing and comfortable space right in the centre of things.

  • Glacier, Skywalk and Lake Louise

    4 czerwca 2018, Kanada ⋅ ❄️ 0 °C

    Wow - what a day!
No trains in the Station to start. Left Jasper with clouds clearing headed south on the 93. First stop, Athabasca Falls where this large river squeezes and thunders through a tiny gorge. Next , Sunwapta Falls, much wider at the top and in full flood.
Farther down we stopped to admire Stutfield Glacier. To be honest we could have stopped every 10 minutes the whole way to see the changing landscape and the Endless Chain Ridge on our left, which boasts length and around 70 peaks.
The highlight has to be the Glacier adventure. We parked in sunshine with a cool breeze blowing off the glacier on the other side of the road. After checking in for our tickets the weather had changed and snow falling! We put on all our layers as we watched the glacier disappear from site. The 13.30 bus took us up to a transfer station where we boarded specialised six wheeled buses. Ours was driven by Sam who had a wealth of knowledge, dodgy jokes and tales and could drive us through the moraine and tyre wash onto the Athabasca glacier. Fortunately the sun had come out and the views all round were amazing.
Our next bus took us a little ways back up the road to the Skywalk, where a steel and glass structure has been built for visitors to walk out some 300m up over the valley. There is also good information about the eco and water systems of these parts and views of the Colombia Ice Fields which sit some 100m on top of the peaks. A great and informative experience.
We set off around 16.00 for our next accommodation at Deer Lodge, Lake Louise. On the way the views remained awesome, sometimes obscured by clouds and snowfall, and when we crossed Bow Summit persistent snow and temperatures down to 1deg.
Arrival was a relief and our anniversary gift was a plate of cheeses which we shared with some Monsters 2014 Merlot. What better way to end a fabulous day?!

  • Maligne Canyon and Lake

    3 czerwca 2018, Kanada ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

We watched the Rocky Mountaineer depart at 8.00, early start! After Mass and a little brekkie we set off for Maligne Canyon where we stopped for a short walk down to 3rd bridge. It’s a river running deep in a limestone gorge creating shapes and colours hard to imagine.
Further up just at the start of Medicine Lake we spotted a ‘Bear jam’ so pulled over to watch mum and large cub playing in a meadow by the lake. Great fun.
A little further on we stopped for a deer by the roadside.
Maligne Lake at the end is surrounded by snow capped mountains and really picturesque.
We returned to our room for a quick lunch from the local bakery with Ribstone Creek ales from Edgerton, Alberta. Very tasty.
After a short wander round town we met Jeff from Sundog Tours for an evening wildlife trip out.
First we headed back to the Maligne Valley and almost immediately saw big horned sheep, elk and Colombian ground squirrels. Later we saw a bear where we had been earlier on Medicine Lake along with an eagle nest. Later we headed east along the 16. In total Jeff showed us a dozen examples of wildlife and brought out big sheep horns and elk antlers.
We ended an excellent evening in time to scuttle to the Jasper Brewing Co for a thoroughly enjoyed pasta and a pint as the rain fell gently down.

  • Jasper

    2 czerwca 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We had our excellent complementary brekkie at the Boathouse with all the hummingbirds. Then set off up the 16 towards Valemount. On the way we stopped at Blue River for a possible wildlife experience but it seemed too busy and costly for what was on offer.
At Valemount we found a nature walk down toto Cranberry Marshes where we saw a couple of new birds as yet unidentified.
We planned a picnic lunch but scuttled for the car due to a passing shower. A little further on we stopped for coffee and excellent homemade blueberry muffins at Don’s Social. Valemount itself is in a basin surrounded by snow capped mountains.
The drive from here was spectacular, notable views of Mt Robson. Then into Alberta where we were surprised by the park fee of some $120!
Jasper is amazing. Again surrounded by snow mountains. We checked into Whistlers Inn, opposite the station, then headed out to walk round Lake Annette (N&J tip) which was beautiful with still waters and amazing colours. Back to the Inn for hot tub, then complementary anniversary drinks. We lost an hour with the clock change so it seems strange to be writing this in full daylight at home ten. We wandered a little to find food, stopping at Jasper Brewing where some very pleasant folks from Portland Maine, Chris and Paul Corviveau’s , six weeks into their road trip invited us to share their table and conversation.
All with spectacular scenery as backdrop.

  • And then we saw a bear, where, here!

    1 czerwca 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

After our gourmet supper with Fern Walk 2016 Pinot Noir we thought a wander to the jetty in order. The evening had turned a bit grey and a strong breeze was coming off the lake. We heard coyote calling in the hills. We were hopeful of seeing a bear on the meadow but nothing doing.
Returning to our shack I spotted a small dark shape in the distant grass which as we got closer was moving about in bear like fashion near to lodge 203. It wasn’t very large and was busy munching in the long grass. We watched for quite a while joined by the occupants of 203 from their bedroom window.
This quite completed our stay at Alpine Meadows.

    1 czerwca 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We enjoyed our complementary brekkie watching the hummingbirds feed at the Boathouse restaurant then headed out to the falls in the park north of Clearwater. We stopped for a train at the crossing which took about 5 minuets to pass.
Starting with the largest, Hemlechk then Dawson then lunch and a hike to Moul Falls. We have completed a set from the tarmac road, all spectacular in their own way.
On the way back we stopped for fuel and supplies. On the road back we spotted a bear briefly by the roadside and also a deer.
Back for tea and time to enjoy the facilities.

  • Alpine Meadows

    31 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Sunny and cool after a comfortable if unassuming night in Sun Peaks and back down the road to the 5. Heading north the road was quiet for the most part, though a construction area delayed us 5 mins or so. Stopped briefly at Little Fort then North Thompson Park for a short stroll.
Arriving at Clearwater we struggled to work out where things were as it’s so spread out. We did discover our accommodation was some 20k out so turned round and finally found the main amenities and eventually the Wells Gray visitor information! Excellent warm samosas with a tarragon sauce from Buy Low for lunch. The i provided maps and advice and we decided to head north for a bit to the first set of (spectacular) falls on the map. This also had the benefit of a Magnum and hot dog if we had required. Spahat Falls thunder down some 60 m through old volcanic flows though the valley is some 300 m below. We did a short hike to Spaden lookout. More tomorrow.
It was time to make the quest for our accommodation in earnest. Back past the Hog n Hop and then south over the restless river and railroad. We picked up the road and followed the sign that indicated 20k. For a while we followed the railroad then climbed a bit and 8k out the road became unsealed. A little further up we found three vultures on a roadkill. Our lodge is in a beautiful setting overlooking lake Hallamore. There are hummingbirds a loon on the lake and reportedly bears. Though we haven’t seen one yet.

  • Sun Peaks

    30 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Long drive today so we left soon after 9 and headed up the 99 when the sat nav woke up sufficiently. The road rose continuously through a steep sided tree lined valley with regular avalanche warning signs for the winter time. We stopped briefly at Joffre Lakes where there was still ice on the pathway and spectacular views of mountains from the lower lake. The others were 2.5-3 km hike so we clambered back in the car and Janet had a drive on the wriggly road. In several spots there were barriers which could close the road in snow season.
Descending the other side we followed the Cayoosh Creek as far as Lillooet where there’s a huge dam and water channel for the fish.
Marble Canyon for a picnic lunch. Cache Creek for a coffee stop at Bear’s Claw lodge then on through Kamloops to our conclusion at Sun Peaks where the snow and most else has gone. You could jump on the ski lift from our room if it were running. The hot tub was welcome and dining in favoured along with Five Vineyards Cab Sav / Merlot.

  • Valley Trail

    29 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

This morning dawned bright and breezy with wet ground. After brekkie we had to visit Rock & Gem then a very helpful volunteer at the Visitor booth, Jennifer, pointed out a lake walk along the Valley Trail with coffee stop half way. It’s off season in Whistler so pretty quiet and not everything open.
The trail skirts the golf course then borders Alta and later Nita Lakes, with coffee stop at Nita Lodge some 4K in. We were by the railroad, completed to here in 1914 and a huge train passed as we were leaving to skirt the far side of Alta Lake. Weather perfect for the walk and huge variety of wild flowers. Back in the village we picked up some Peaks and Valleys pale ale from Russell Brewing ( with Chilliwack hops) to go with lunch.
Having done nearly 17,000 steps we put our feet up for a bit. The day stayed sunny, contrary to the forecast. So Then we pottered around, did a bit of sketching, reading, exploring the village and gondola/ ski lifts, three of which were in operation. We had to try the pool which was warm and the hot tub which was hotter!
Time for reviving g&t and eats in a bit.

    28 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The kids and Paula all readied themselves for the working week and said fond farewells. Danny cooked the eggs and then dropped us at Duke Point for the 10.15 sailing of Coastal Inspiration to Tsawwassen. Took 150 minutes to cross which meant limited time to meet up with Rocky friend Alex and hubby Nigel who were doing the trip east to west. In the end we had about 15 minuets to exchange experiences and leaflets before we had to board the 13.00 bus.
Eventually we picked up a very pleasant Nissan Altima at the airport and plodded through Vancouver afternoon traffic then heading through Stanley Park and over Lions Gate bridge and north on highway 99. We needed a quick stop for mid afternoon pizza in Horseshoe Bay then on to Whistler. The Crystal Lodge is very comfortable and convenient and the smoked chicken pie and beers at the Beacon Pub excellent. Rock and Gem shop is right next door!

    26 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Saturday we all got ready and Danny drove eight of us to Victoria where Jemima was to be presented with the Chief Scout award by the Lt. Governor. Beforehand we enjoyed brunch, blueberry pancakes for some in the diner next door. The presentation was in the theatre of a retirement complex that seemed just like a cruise ship docked. Fabulous surroundings and facilities.
Jemima was one of some twenty who had achieved the highest award in scouting. It takes a great deal of effort and dedication and it was a great pleasure to be there when she received the honour.
On the way back we stopped in downtown Nanaimo for an ice cream along the front returning for a bbq and later a stroll with Bailey around Neck Pt. Right at the end the boys found a little exchange house in the foot of a tree.

  • Whales and Nanaimo

    25 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Up early as we were booked onto a follow up boat trip since we saw no whales the previous day. Sunny to start though clouded over but less wind. We were able to head round to Long Beach where whales were reported feeding. Here indeed we found a host of spouts of Californian Gray whales. Choosing two which appeared like a cow and calf we spent many minutes watching them come up for breath, then dive down to feed. Awesome!
Took a while, and a soup in Shelter, to warm up a bit. Then we drove back towards Nanaimo up the winding road, set to arrive around 16.00. A little hiccup with planned gas station not taking our cards then alternative via detour ended in road closures not permitting access to return the car! A large number of left turns later brought us to the drop off and there was Paula!
Great to see her again and then all the family in their super home and we also met new dog, Bailey, an excitable morning hound. In the evening we all went for a walk at Piper’s which overlooks Shack Island and has some beautiful wild flowers and views across the sound to the mainland.

  • Whales or maybe not

    24 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Morning dawned a little grey still. Heading into Tofino we had some (dangerous ) time for shopping. Beautiful gallery of Roy Henry Vickers, craft and jewellery shops and Pina. We were booked for rib at 12.00 which we changed for more sedate and comfortable Chinook Princess at 12.30, theoretically to see California Grey whale. In the harbour we saw a Californian Sealion. As we departed with skipper Keith and crew Amber and Jamie, we got the safety briefing, and the sun came out, and we were then informed that the wind had got up and plans changed , so instead of Long Beach we kept within the channels to somewhere a whale had been seen in the morning. It got pretty rough towards the end of the channel which obliged us to turn round. We saw a sea otter on the way back then headed round towards the lighthouse which took us in front of our hotel. Still no whales, so we are granted a second go which we hope will deliver in the morning.
The remaining afternoon we drove to Ocluelet down the coast and visited the main Pina store where they print clothing to order.
On the way back we stopped at the Rainforest boardwalk for a memorable walk in the Forrest. There were many birds we heard, but we did also see a Wilson’s Warbler. Time running low we called at The Net for pizza to go which we had with the Five Vineyards Pinot Noir, sitting in our room overlooking the sunny beach, maybe even a sunset?!

Then on towards Port Alberni and Cathedral Grove where the oldest trees, Douglas Fir, can be found, taller than the leaning tower!
Temperature up to 28 through the mountains and down the winding road, fell to 15 approaching coast and our destination in Tofino. Chilly now!
Our room has beautiful view west over the beach, sadly the sun has deserted us, though the g&t tastes as good.

  • Beacon Hill and Killer whales

    22 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

The day dawned brightly and after breakfast we set off towards Beacon Hill Park. The wild flowers were beautiful including purple common Camas and cream Meadow Death Camas. At the lookout the view across to Mt Baker in Washington State was stunning a layer of mist obscuring the coastline with mountains soaring above. From the mist appeared a large container ship in surreal ghostly fashion.
From here we walked along the coast path towards the town. There was a lady skinny dipping on one beach though surely thermals were more the order of the day?! A bit further on there was a flash of orange which settled on a bush - Anna’s hummingbird! Quite brilliant. Coffee at Breakwater Cafe before cutting inland through James Bay. A liquor store provided more delicious Okanangan Pinot Noir and Thrifty market a few more useful essentials.
Back to base via Parliament building, for a swim (A) and lunch ahead of a whale watching trip with BC whale tours aboard BC Luna. Captain Jim is a marine biologist and quickly headed the 12 on board to find two Killer Whale brothers heading east through the straits. Awesome! We spent quite a bit of time with them before heading towards the coast and finding our way back to port with the sun still shining.
    Great day!

  • Victoria

    21 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

I write this G&T in hand listening to Mike & the Mechanics on our sunny balcony on Victoria Day, a public holiday. What a day!
We left our excellent hotel on Robson headed down to the floatplane. We were in time to catch the 10.30 Harbourair flight to Victoria. So easy, a bakers dozen on the plane plus pilot, safety briefing on an iPad, calm conditions , we headed out, revved up and away we went, out over the suspension bridge down river and across to Vancouver Island.
Smooth landing and we wondered where our suitcases were? In the float it turned out. This being Victoria Day the bands were playing , roads closed and festivities going on. The last majorettes passed in time for us to cross to our Parkside hotel. There we left our luggage and headed for Fisherman’s Wharf a couple of km round the harbour. Barb’s renowned F&C and ginormous Ice-creams made lunch. We caught a H2O water taxi back to Empress and thence to our hotel apartment where we had been upgraded to a corner suite with chocs and another anniversary card! Brilliant!!
We tour ourselves away to book whale watching for the morrow and supermarket for provisions ( I must cook the sockeye in a mo). Pool and now balcony- what more could you ask for. BC Pinot Noir with the fish. More demain.

  • MOA and Gastown

    20 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Mass at nine a few blocks along Broughton began our Sunday.
Then we hopped on a 5 trolley bus towards Downtown then a short walk to Granville where we boarded a 4 to UBC a fair ride for $1.85 each. At the end it was a short walk through the campus to the Museum of Anthropology.
Coffee first then a look round the indigenous peoples exhibits of carved and painted wooden totems, boats, masks and animals, all displayed in a fine purpose designed building. Some were recovered from sites, others created in the traditional styles, notably by Bill Reid whose works followed First nations’ traditions, his mother being from the Haida clan.
There were examples of other First Nations languages and crafts such as decorated fine baskets, clothing textiles, wood and metal work.
After lunch of tasty salmon or tomato and Brie sandwich (Janet’s was pinched by an over eager fellow diner) we went outside to see a reconstructed village and more totems.
Taking a different route through the university we caught the 14 bus back and on to Gastown. Here we caught the steam clock whistling 3.30 and wandered along Water St, though at the end it turned somewhat seedy so we hopped back on a bus and headed back to our comfortable Listel Hotel for tea and feet up prior to the complementary bar opening at five.

  • Stanley Park and Granville Island

    19 maja 2018, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The day dawned calm and a little grey, with all the Windsor royal wedding action on TV. We decided to walk the sea wall walk round the edge of Stanley Park starting at the lost lagoon ( it lost its seawater around 100 years ago). There were two large cruise ships in and our first stop, totems, was a little overwhelmed by Singaporeans with scarves on. There was a good spot to watch the float planes takeoffs. We found a cafe opening a little further on then climbed up under the suspension bridge to Prospect Point. Here it brightened up.
From there we walked down through the woods with giant redwoods and woodpeckers in the distance. Wild flowers were in abundance and blue butterfly. The path emerged at the lost lagoon which was a mass of flag irises with some evidence of beavers and a charming black squirrel.
Now we wondered how we would get to Granville Island our next port of call. Standing at the bus stop and puzzling over when one might come a taxi popped up - result! In no time were in the bustling market cum craft scene. First call ‘Off the Tracks’ for excellent Avo Toast with scrambled eggs accompanied by tasty tea or Granville Island IPA. Strolling round we found the most amazing art supplies shop and the public market was full of delicious fare including artisan granola squares by which we were tempted.
The little aqua bus took us back across the water for $3 where we sat by Sunset Beach for the rest of the afternoon sketching or listening to pod casts and watching the world go by on cycles, roller blades or foot.
Back at base we enjoyed a complementary Narrative Rose before heading up to open our bottle of Narrative Cabernet Franc/ Merlot from Okanangan which is rather delicious After 21717 steps we are not contemplating too many more to find something to eat later.
A few steps more found us in Timber, the downmarket bar attached to the hotel, for fine fish and chips with local beers, a lager and Off the Rails pale ale. All excellent!

We wandered along Robson and decided on Cactus Club Cafe for green salad with chargrilled chicken avocado spiced pecan washed down with local beers: Cactus House ale and Granville Island Summer Ale. The sun had come out and we got a second wind, strolling down to the quayside and Harbour Air seaplane service. Back to base via whole food supermarket for some breakfast supplies.
