Photos taken outside the hostel last night and now travelling back home. On Friday 8th July we caught a bus from the Tommy Wass and then went on to board a train, car, taxi, tube, metro, Gondola, tram, boat, bicycle and foot. We've laughed and cried. Massaged tired feet and drank our weight in water.

    Best bits so far..
Eating amazing local food in the Beir Garten and drinking from a 2 pint glass.
    Swimming in rivers
    Swimming in the sea
    Rooftop pool
    Listening to live music
    Seeing the super moon rise
Walking great heights and feeling healthy.
    Eating a waffle in Salzburg.
    Travelling by trains across Europe.
Eating a variety of different foods in Spain and them all tasting incredible.
Sculptures at the Louvre, Guggenheim, Gaudi Park and MUCA.
Traghetto Gondola across the grand canal.
Watching films in very comfy hostels.

  • Art and cycle culture

    27 Julai 2022, Jerman ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Tuesday was an overcast day. We attempted a walk up a hill which only Stanley fulfilled and Iona and I went back to the hostel room. It was a lazy day. Yesterday was made up for it by hiring bicycles and seeing art. We visited the https://www.muca.eu/en/ museum of contemporary and urban art. Original works by Banksy and Richard Hambleton's famous 'Shadowman' silhouettes.

The whole of Munich is lent to cycle lanes endorsing a physical and mental health culture. Because of this we haven't seen any traffic jams. We joined this pedal power for a day it was amazing but apparently I went too slow... I was busy filming.

  • Munich

    26 Julai 2022, Jerman ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Munich is a busy huge green city. Just a short ride from Austria. We caught the 10.56am from Salzburg and arrived at 12.30pm. We are in the third and final week of our tour and still walking about exploring and finding new places to swim.

On Monday we bought a 9 euro travel card which will last us all week. We caught the tram and went into the centre of Munich and entered the 'English' garden which starts here and then slices 5 miles up the North East side of the city. It's named after an English garden due to its rambling style of woods which is true because it reminds me a bit of Middleton woods. In the stifling heat we try and find the river that we've read about that people swim in.

After 30 minutes of walking and carrying bags we hear the sound of the water gushing through Stauwehr Oberföhring. Its a big concrete bridge and 'Isar' is the river that runs underneath. We follow a cycle track running alongside the river and down to a slope which opens out onto a raised pebble beach, acting as an island. We soon put the Barcelona picnic blanket down and submerge ourselves into the cold clear shallow waters.

People are sunbathing, some are totally naked, some aren't naked. Kids are running around and it's a lovely atmosphere. There's a fast pace to the water which if you try and swim against it you just stay in one place not getting anywhere, it's great exercise. However, its not dangerous because its so shallow you just scrap your arse on the pebbles and stand up again.

After 5 hours more families come to swim to cool down after a long hot day at school or work. We packed our bags and walked another 35 minutes in the stubborn heat through the Munich suburbs of rolling parks with trees and playgrounds and a random nymph statue: Daphne.

Desperate to sit down and eat we found a local beer garden called Schlosselgarten. We were a bit disheveled and totally parched after our trek.

When we arrived we were told they don't take cards. Standing in disbelieve with no euros and no ATM in sight I suddenly remember I've got some dollars hidden away in my purse which my best mate Bee gave me before we left.

She said 'In the last week of your stay when your at the end of your money spend this on a slap up meal!'
The waiter in his traditional Lederhosen nodded to at my request and we exchanged our meal and drinks for the international currency including tip at an agreeable transaction rate😉.

We ordered the biggest two pint lager of Lowenbrau and a three course German meal. Here's the pictures of salmon and fritters. Pork steaks with some carb style noodles that look like sweetcorn (but arent) and a mushroom creamy sauce which was a food combo I've never tasted before in my life!

Thank you Bee your money it went right to the heart of this beer garden!

A full initiation into Germanic lifestyle.

    Prost!

  • Salzburg- short stay

    24 Julai 2022, Jerman ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We arrived in Salzburg on Friday evening and checked into a pristine dorm with four beds. As we already had gotten used to having our own space we just thought no-one would occupy the last bed. We watched Only You our favourite rom com because we missed Venice. And heard a thunder storm booming outside.

The next day was overcast with a welcoming refreshing breeze. We bought a 24hr Salzburgcard which allows you to travel on the buses and access to every museum and castle.

Our first stop was Hellbrunn Palace with immaculate tended grounds and famous 'trick' fountains, which sprung water all over us . One pond stretched across the space of two football pitches with Carp that looked like submarines travelling under and another pond which had two ancient Sturgeon fish theywere 80 years and 60 years old and looked like dhwtks without fins.

We did a lot of climbing up to undefeated forts such as Hohenszburg with a small village on top.
Salzburg is like Harrogate on steroids.
We had a Guinness which was gorgeous.

Now in Munich after a shirt 2 hour train journey over the border. Germany is out final country before heading back to the UK on Friday. 🇬🇧 🇫🇷 🇮🇹 🇦🇹 🇩🇪 🍺🥞🍷

  • Cooler clim's

    23 Julai 2022, Austria ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Arrived in Austria 🇦🇹 The day was hot but the temperature on the train was lovely and cool. Italy mingled with Austria through the border and soon there was a corridor of steep alps on either side.
The train at one point travelled in a downwardhill direction making it feel like a rollercoaster I couldn't take photos as I felt motion sickness, but it was a bizarre experience. As the train went down and around the view out of the window was filled with other hills and trees like we were in the film Inception. Felt lucky to be able to be doing this!
Hostel Wolfgang is pristine and fresh and we have our own room! TV and ensuite bathroom.

  • We ❤ Venice

    22 Julai 2022, Itali ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Gliding over the causeway into and out of Venice is like being in the Spirited Away film (Studio Gibli 2001). The silence is broken by a mandatory mask wearing tanoy notice. If we don't have a mask we will be reported to the authorities and asked to leave at the next available station.

We're travelling up to Verona Porta Nuova on the 08.10am train. It was a struggle getting up at 6 30 after 3 full days of relaxation. Venice is so hot and busy but setting off at that time meant we avoioded the heat and the crowds.

We were lucky enough to have an Airbnb apartment just off Campo Santa Maria Formosa. We could see the bustle of life in the streets below. For three days we felt like we lived there: swaning around parquet wooden flooring opening and closing full length windows to let in the sounds of church bells tolling and random accordion music playing. One bedroom was three times bigger then the first dorm we had in Paris!

Tourist's use their phones to navigate their way through the never-ending labyrinth of alleys, which is a shame as it takes away the fun of getting lost and navigating yourself, using different signs like: brick arches and door knockers as markers. Still google maps was useful for the 30 minute walk this morning to Saint Lucia station. Stanley is good at navigating and both have youth and energy on their side to stride. I have the perimenopause on my side which equals no energy at times and lots of sweating everywhere.

Stanley hot spots' my phone to his and we download train tickets to Venice St. Lucia to Verona Porta Nuova then Verona to Innsbruck and from there Innsbruck to Strazburg arriving at 6pm.

It's Friday and the train is full of business people chatting on their phones wearing jeans and linen shirts, it might be 'dress down' Friday at work?

  • Milan to Venice

    18 Julai 2022, Itali ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

We had the best night sleep. Milo hostel is cheap and cheerful clean with amazingly comfy beds. It's got everything you need apart from breakfast, so I popped to the local Lidl this morning to buy breakfast and took fresh baked bread and fruit back to eat at the hostel.

Seeing the neighbourhood in the daylight was totally different from the night and a small vintage tram trundled past. I thought this must the most bizarrely wonderful Monday morning ever.

I got stuck at the cheese section and couldn't decide which mozzarella to buy.

You have to chuck your stuff in a bag quickly like in the UK.

Orange juice tastes amazing after a day of travelling!

The short train journey of all 2.5hrs takes us from Milan Centrale to Venice St. Lucia right in the heart of Venice over the causeway so it feels like your a part in the animated film Spirited Away.
Milan Centrale is like a museum: its marble arches and sculpted reliefs are something to be gasped at in wonder it takes 10 minutes to get through to find a train. What other train station in the world has designer shops-only Milan!

The journey was the most comfortable and quick after our epic route yesterday. And we queued for 3 tickets to take us to Rialto Bridge on the Vapereto water bus.
We had instructions to find the square and then open a key box and we let ourselves into out apartment where we will stay for 4 days. Getting lost, eating pizza ind drinking Limoncelo only way to live in Venice.

  • Travel day to Milan

    17 Julai 2022, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

    Sunday 17th July
Barcelona Sants- Valence- Chambery Challes Les Eaux - Milan

We set out on the Barcelona Sants to Valence train at 8:15 am, leaving the 'sea' city behind. The taxi arrived at 7.30 am outside the hostel for the 15 minute drive. We pass by dozens of shuttered shop fronts decorated with grafitti, all-nighters returning from an evening of clubbing. There are the children's playgrounds and embedded trampoline patches empty ready for a day of bouncing on.

The train is going back the way we came, so it's going back up through France. The seats have an interior like a 1970' s coach: all orange and velvety. It has a lovely buffet bar that you can walk around in and look at the scenery whilst you drink your coffee. We haven't had breakfast so I get the kids a doughnut and croissant.

We've got a connecting train from Valence to Chambery Challeses les Eaux at 13.23. We arrive in time at Valence and walk over the concourse to the platform but the train to Chambery is late and then more late. Our connecting train to Milan is at 15.44 so we know we've probably missed it.

We haven't had lunch and I can hear my kids tummys rumbling. Our fellow travellers are mumbling the usual disgruntled dialogue that go with late trains. I look next to me and there's a group of young people running some sort of tour with a small group of younger people. I ask one man dressed in a green tshirt who speaks perfect English, he says: the train is 30 minutes late as its got stuck. So I think ill risk running to get some sandwiches. But by the time I get to the counter Stanley has followed me up to tell me the train is coming in!

The train carries us over the southern region of France with small gijts and fields of sunflowers, cypress trees and looming mountains in the distance.

We wait 2 hours for the next train at Chambery. We catch our third and final train to Milan which will take four hours. We dont have a reservation for this train so we sit in the vestibule area which has handy small table area. After some confused tetris style lugging of rucksacks we settle down. Then after 40 minutes three French customs people with bullet proof vests appear with a sniffer dog (a black labarador called Max). After questioning a young man about his silver suitcase they go up and down the carriage checking random people. After realising there's nothing juicy to find Max the dog slumps to the ground in the heat.

There's lot of passport checks by policeman with firearms in their belts or border agency staff which is a bit intimidating but adds to the experience and entertainment that breaks up the long journey.

We've travelled through three countries and at one point everyone apart from us is speaking all three. Its a Sunday so there are teary lovers kissing their farewells. Families hugging. Maybe it's an end of a holiday or the beginning of a new one?

The first stop in Italy is Turin so a lot of people get off. Then we finally nab some seats taking us into the night of Milan-Garibaldi train station.

We've been travelling for over 12 hours and it's nearly 10pm, we've mastered the quick metro buying ticket technique and set off to the east of the city called Lamberate. Its a short walk by the side of train line and tenement houses with poor lighting. I'm really tired but alert to that fact it's probably not the best place to be wandering about so we quicken our pace under a pedestrian tunnel to the lights of Mio hostel on the right for our 'pit stop' sleep for one night before going to Venice tomorrow.

  • Last day in Barcelona

    16 Julai 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

We have loved getting to know Barcelona. Our last day was spent half by the sea walking 1 km to the Bogatella beach, a bit crowded and we had to walk quickly to protect our feet on the hot sand and practically dive into the sea which was about 16 degrees perfect to cool down.

Renting a beach umbrella was 15euros and I bought a massive ground blanket which I'm going to have to carry around with me but I don't mind as I've wanted one for ages. We ordered beer and nachos on the beach. Everything tastes so good.

We booked a ticket for the Gaudi gardens for the second half of the day, which was like another world, and reminded me of Port Merrion. The architecture looked like gingerbread cottages and the ceramic curves caught the early evening sun. The mosaic designs must have taken years to create, the promotional photos are incredible but you have to see and feel it to get the most out of the experience.

We got a taxi back with the window open passing we saw more parts of the city. The buildings and the trees are amazing but it's the people that make Barcelona.

One last night up on the rooftop bar. It's Paella night with Chef Bobby who provides pop up Paella all around the city. It's freshly made with mussels and prawns and we wash it down with a cold beer watching the sun set over the balconies as the swifts chirp and dive above us.

    15 Julai 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We had all good intentions to go to the Gaudi gardens today but got deterred by catching another tour bus: the orange line, before our 24hr pass ran out. It took 3 hours going a different route were too tired to do anything else after apart from shopping and eating. The heat is getting to us. Iona enjoyed sleeping on the bus.
Now on the rooftop bar waiting for Clara Ballestreo an acoustic singer with a guitar to show up and sing.

  • Switching hostels and tour bus

    14 Julai 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We switched hostels today because I didn't book enough time at one place in Barcelona originally.

However, it worked out well because we got to see another part of the city. Urbany hostel sits along a main open road which intersects three main thoroughfares. City planners are engineering all three into one junction near us at the moment, which is a major piece of work.

Urbany hostel has definitely a younger vibe: I think I'm dampening my kids style. We had enough food to last us through the day after the cossol breakfast we (I) smuggled out of Sunotel. And found a supermarket to buy some ingredients for food tonight.

We boarded a sightseeing bus tour which took us past iconic places like Sagrada Familia the largest unfinished Roman Catholic Church designed by Francisca de Paula del Villa when he resigned Antonio Gaudi took over and made it into the elaborate gothic design.

We melted in the 4pm sun on the bus driving through streets, at one point the jasmine trees hung over the open top bus filling the air with its sweet perfume. We couldn't have attempted to see this on foot!

Back at the hostel we visited the rooftop bar (no pool this time but an amazing 13 floors up view of the setting sun light over the city. I enjoyed a Caiphrihna and felt I was in Brazil again.
Another busy day. Hopefully we will make it to the Gaudi Park tomorrow.

  • Barcelona rooftops and moon rise

    13 Julai 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Mas Que Nada is playing at Sunotel, why would you go anywhere else? Its 31 oc and the hotel has its own rooftop pool and hot tub the latter seeming futile but the former, a welcome plunge. Looking down 7 floors you can see the plane trees line the road below.

Down on the street people are going about their daily business. It's been 6 days and we've accumulated 3 persons worth of laundry, so we follow google map grid system of Barceliona 2 blocks down and found a laundromat with fab acoustics.

Then the second half of the day involved walking again, this time along the playas. I had read somewhere that on a full moon the locals gather together and celebrate the moon on the beach.

As we walked over the sand there was no moon in sight the sun was setting and the sky looked hazy.

The evening paned out like pretty much like every evening in an outside resturant: chatting eating and drinking. Just then the moon began to rise above the sea line. It was red at first and everyone gasped and began to run to the waters edge. It was a lovely moment with locals without any language barriers to understand we were sharing the same experience.

  • Gard de Lyon to Barcelona Sants

    12 Julai 2022, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

After a slow start of packing and eating breakfast we said au reviour to Plug Inn hostel and started the first interior journey of our trip from Gard de Lyon to Lyon Part Dieu and then onto Barcelona. It was 20 minutes late so hopefully we'll still have time to change.
We managed to catch the connecting train 🚆 14.35 from Lyon to Barcelona 19.35. Our journey was 5 hours long but felt like a couple of hours as we were so distracted by our surroundings, it seemed to contract time.
Coming out of the station Barcelona Sants the day is still light and 29 degrees. We set out on foot, found the main tree lined pedestrian avenue which would lead to our road: Carre de Paris. The seats outside small bars are being filled with people drinking cerveza: a mix of generations chatting underneath an urban canopy of green plane trees. We visited an air conditioned supermarket and stocked up on bread cheese and ham and even walked three blocks more before we realised we'd past our hotel! We're now settled at Sunotel tired and showered watching Shrek. We will visit the pool in the morning ... very different experience from the last hostel. Updates on Barcelona tomorrow but so far this place is wonderful, friendly and warm. Bon noche.

  • Back home and best bits

    11 Julai 2022, Itali ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

On Friday 9th July 2022 we caught a bus from The Tommy Wass at the top of Dewsbury Rd in Leeds and travelled by train, tube, car, metro, taxi, boat, tram, bicycle and foot to visit 6 countries and now we're going home again.

Paris, Barcelona, Milan, Venice, Salzburg and Munich.

Were on our final journey home setting off from Munich at 8.27am and heading to the Eurostar at Brussels. Then continuing up to Leeds in one day hopefully arriving home at 22.57.

We've drank our body weight in water. We've been bitten and stung. We've massaged aching feet, laughed and cried.

The best meal was the beer garden in Munich.

The second best meal were the waffles in Salzburg. The best food overall I felt was Spain from Tapas on a rooftop pool to Nachos on the beach, a pokesalad at a bar and spagetti Carbonara in a restaurant.

Travelling has been a laugh but we've learnt lots of important things firstly how lucky we are to be able to do something like this. Learning to communicate in different speaking countries were the collective language is English. This has made our travelling a bit easier but its isolating when you don't know what people are saying. However, you will learn more by trying and making a fool of yourself than doing nothing at all.

At the hostel yesterday we sat down and wrote our best bits of the trip:

    The highlights have been:
The Louvre seeing sculptures of Mercury, Diana and Shekmet.
    Sketching by the Seine.
The rides at Eurodisney Hyper Space and Indiana Jones rides.
    Just the atmosphere of Paris.

Finding our way to the hotel in Barcelona and feeling warm and welcome.
    The rooftop pool.
    Swimming in the sea.
Super moon rise over the sea.
    Carla Ballestero (singer).
    People.
    Gaudi Park.
    Food.

Shopping at Lidl on a Monday morning in Milan.
Meeting a nice Argentinan woman traveller.
    Milano Centrale Station.

    Atmosphere and apartment in Venice
    Guggenheim museum
    Wandering over canals
Traghetto Gondola across the grand canal.
Swimming in the sea at the Lido beach.
    Music.
    Food.

Salzberg heights walking up lots of hills and feeling healthy.
Waffles and Aperol spritzer at Hellbrunnen.

Swimming in the river at Munich.
Eating a slap up meal and downing it a with a 2 pint glass.
    Cycling around Munich
Visiting MUCA- Museum of Urban Contemporary Art
    Food.
