    August 13-17

    17 августа 2017 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We headed back toward Loveland to Carter Lake, a Larimer County Campground. No water views but a fantastic large site backing up to a meadow. Spent the next five days relaxing, reading and throwing the ball for Kuma. We did manage to spend one morning taking a long hike along the west side of the lake and back.Читать далее

Took a 15 minute drive to Riverview RV Park along the Big Thompson River. No weekend openings at Carter Lake, we sure missed our big open site🙁. We spent Saturday exploring Denver where we walked the 16th Street pedestrian mall and wandered around the performing arts center. Beautiful architecture, good food, street performers, shops, public art and interactive activities. https://www.denver.org/things-to-do/denver-attr…Читать далее

    24 августа 2017 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We arrived at A. B. Camping in Cheyenne, Wyoming on Wednesday. After "setting up camp" we took a long walking tour of downtown Cheyenne, the Capital, which was closed for renovation, and visited the Wyoming State Museum. http://wyomuseum.state.wy.us/
We started our day on Thursday at Terry Bison Ranch, we weren't too impressed... saw barnyard animals, ostriches and camels but the bison were grazing too far away to see. http://www.terrybisonranch.com/
We next stopped at the Southwest Wyoming Welcome Center then rounded up our day at the Historic Governor's Mansion http://www.wyohistory.org/encyclopedia/governor… and the Cheyenne Botanic Garden. http://www.botanic.org/

Friday we took a beautiful hike to Hidden Falls on the Crow Creek trail in Curt Gowdy State Park. http://wyoparks.state.wy.us/index.php/places-to… gowdy
We then headed into and over Medicine Bow National Forest on our way to downtown Laramie where we had lunch before touring the Wyoming Territorial Prison.
http://www.wyomingterritorialprison.com/ On the way back to camp we stopped at the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Monument http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/8450 and the Ames Monument https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ames Monument
    A full day of touring.😊
Saturday we spent the morning at Cheyenne's Farmer's Market. Got us some fresh roasted green chilis and an all you can fill bag for $10 of produce:
green and wax beans, zucchini, eggplant, purple carrots, beefsteak tomatoes, cucumbers, leeks, dill and corn.
It was Zombie Fest weekend so we watched the zombie walk too.
Spent the afternoon with our neighbors, Joe and Joanne, who also are fulltime RVers and hikers extraordinaire.
We really enjoyed our time in Cheyenne.

    August 27-28

    28 августа 2017 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Headed northeast to Robidoux RV Park in Gering, Nebraska. Our site is huge with a paved pad and picnic area surrounded by grass and views of Scott's Bluff. Randy is a happy camper as they allow you to wash your vehicles, much needed after six and a half weeks on the road, and Kuma is a happy pup with room to run.
Monday we went to the Scott's Bluff National Monument visitors center then drove up to the summit and took a short hike where we enjoyed some awesome views.
    https://www.nps.gov/scbl/index.htm
We also took in the Legacy of the Plains Museum which was really well done. http://legacyoftheplains.org/
I'm doing well with my Farmers Market produce. Have made dilly beans, beans and leeks in the instant pot, cucumbers and dill in roasted shrimp and orzo salad, low carb lasagna with zucchini and eggplant. 😋

    30 августа 2017 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Tuesday we drove to Lake Minatare where we climbed to the top of the lighthouse and checked out the campgrounds. http://outdoornebraska.gov/lakeminatare/ Then we strolled around downtown Gering and shared a cabbage burger at the bakery. Cabbage burgers are popular around here and are pretty tasty. We ended our afternoon cycling the Monument Valley Pathway along the North Platte River in Scott's Bluff then visiting Rebecca Burdick Winters grave. ://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebecca_Winters_(pioneer). We had some awesomely delicious steak nachos at the Steel Grill for dinner.
Wednesday we were up early for a 6 mile hike at Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area where we also visited their Nature Center. Next we went to Chimney Rock National Historic Site and Visitors Center. https://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/scotts_bluff/chim…

We've enjoyed our stay in Nebraska... LOTS of Oregon Trail history, sugar beets, corn, potatoes and sugar beet refineries.

Headed north across the Plains to Custer's Gulch RV Park in Custer City, South Dakota. The cooler climate, mountains and trees are a welcome relief from the heat and dust of Nebraska. Our campsite is spacious with nice mountain views.
After settling in we headed downtown to stroll the main drag. Historic architecture and lots of buffalo art with many shops and restaurants.

    4 сентября 2017 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Sunday we stuck close to camp. Randy spent the afternoon smoking beef ribs and pork chops... yummy! After dinner we biked a bit of the George Mickelson trail
https://gfp.sd.gov/state-parks/directory/mickel…, which runs in front of our RV Park, to the Gordon Stockade.http://gfp.sd.gov/state-parks/directory/custer/…
The smoke from forest fires provided us with a beautiful sunset reflected onto Stockade Lake.
Monday we went to Wind Caves National Park and took an hour and a half tour. Not as spectacular as Carlsbad but beautiful in it's own way and one of the world's longest caves. After the tour we took a short hike on the prairie above the caves. We also saw a herd of buffalo on our way to the visitors center.
Then we drove to Hot Springs for lunch and strolled along the river, downtown and up to the Veteran's Battle Mt Sanitarium. Next we toured the Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD. It's an active paleontological dig with 61 mammoths unearthed so far. http://mammothsite.com/

A full day of sightseeing! 😊

We spent a wonderful morning touring Mt Rushmore. We walked the Presidents Trail and hit the visitors center and sculptors studio. https://www.nps.gov/moru/index.htm
After having lunch in Keystone we headed back to Custer SP to hike the Little Devil's Tower trail. This was easily our favorite hike so far this year. It started off fairly easy and ended with a scramble over boulders and through granite rock clefts with a final grunt up to the peak. We were rewarded with jaw dropping views of Cathedral Spires, the Black Elk Wilderness and the backside of Mt Rushmore.Читать далее

Wednesday was a full day of sightseeing. First we headed east to Wall Drug Store for a bite to eat. Fun, interesting history and a total tourist trap. Next we toured the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site's Visitors Center and silo D-9. Very interesting and even more so as some of the volunteers are retired servicemen who had worked at the site and had a wealth of information. https://www.nps.gov/mimi/index.htm On to Badlands National Park where we drove the Badlands Loop road, stopping at many overlooks and the Visitors Center. The Badlands are beautiful but not very conducive to long hikes. https://www.nps.gov/badl/index.htm An hour and 45 minute drive home for a bit of dinner then to Crazy Horse Memorial to watch the laser light show and blast... fantastic! https://crazyhorsememorial.org/night-blasts.htmlhttps://crazyhorsememorial.org/legends-in-light…Читать далее

Housekeeping inside and out was the order of the day Friday. We had a wonderful stay in Custer, plenty to see and do with warm days and cold nights.
Saturday we traveled an hour northwest to Fish n Fry Campground just outside of Deadwood, SD. After setting up camp we took a walk around historic Deadwood. Casinos, shops, restaurants, gunfights, fantastic architecture, wine tasting and chocolates. We'll be returning for further exploration. https://www.travelsouthdakota.com/explore-with-…

Monday morning we took Kuma to the vet in Spearfish to get his gums checked out, they've been swollen and bleeding the past three days. Blood work fine. Scheduled a teeth cleaning for later this week. When we got home Randy smoked a rack of incredibly delicious baby back ribs. So glad he invested in the small travel smoker.
Tuesday we toured the Adams Museum and Adams House.
https://www.deadwoodhistory.com/about-us/proper… Both were very well curated and must see attractions in Deadwood. We also took a walking tour of Mt Moriah Cemetery, the resting place of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok.

    Little Elk Creek Trail
    Sturgis

    September 14

    14 сентября 2017 г., Windy Flats ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

We dropped Kuma off at the animal hospital in Spearfish early this morning, had breakfast then hiked the Little Elk Creek trail, halfway between Sturgis and Rapid City. A wonderful trail bursting with fall colors, rock formations, juvenile trout in the creek and a good five and a half mile workout. We stopped in Sturgis on the way to pick up Kuma. Really quiet now... can only imagine what it's like during the August rally.
Kuma now has sparkling clean canines but is also missing his top three teeth some bone and a tumor that was causing the bleeding. Tissue sample sent for biopsy and we'll be following up with his vet in Gresham. 😞 Poor puppy...and he just celebrated his 11th birthday on the 12th.

    17 сентября 2017 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Rainy night and morning. Departed Deadwood in drizzle and fog late Friday morning then north to Red Trail Campground in Medora, North Dakota the gateway to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. A very STRAIGHT drive through the prairie past crops of sunflowers, corn and grazing cattle.
Saturday dawned cold and wet and remained so for the entire day. We went to the Painted Canyon and South Unit Visitor Centers at Theodore Roosevelt National Park then did the 36 mile Scenic Loop Drive. The drive was fantastic with grand views, buffalo, prairie dogs and even a badger (no pic).
Sunday was perfect hiking weather, cool and partly cloudy. We hiked the Painted Canyon Trail, only four and a half miles but a bit treacherous as it was very muddy...lots of slipping and sliding. Saw hoodoos, petrified wood, deer and lots of buffalo tracks and dung.

Wednesday we took Kuma and hiked the loop trail at Phipps Park. Beautiful views of rock formations and Billings.
Rainy again on Thursday so we toured the Moss Mansion a beautifully restored historic home that has 90% of its original textiles, wall coverings and furniture intact. http://www.mossmansion.com/history/

    24 сентября 2017 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

Friday we cruised west through rain and snow over the Continental Divide to Jim and Mary's RV Park just outside of Missoula, Montana.
Saturday we went to two farmers markets in downtown Missoula. The morning was brisk, high 30s, but braving the cold was well worth it as both markets had an abundance of produce. We had rhubarb raspberry jalapeno pie at the Purple Pie Place when we were in Custer, SD and have been yearning for it since.... EUREKA! rhubarb and raspberries at the market, so pie was baked and consumed.
Sunday we toured Fort Missoula Museum and historic buildings. This visit was of special interest to me as my great uncle, Kyutaro Nakamura, was detained there during World War 2. http://www.fortmissoulamuseum.org/aliendetentio…
