  • PortoMarin to Airexe

    June 2 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

It wasn’t supposed to rain. Well, 10% chance. But it drizzled off and on and by afternoon it poured for a while. So, not many photos.

Things I notice along the trail. There is a lot of mint growing along side of the road. There’s also fennel. I remember seeing a lot of fennel when I did the Camino the first time. I hadn’t seen any the first couple of days this time. But after PortoMarin it seemed to start popping up.

A lot of people are on the Camino. The picture I took in no way shares a true sense of the numbers: easily two hundred if not more and we haven’t yet reached the junction where the other trails converge. Good thing our accommodations are all booked in advance.

  • Airexe to Palas de Rei - Under a canopy of trees

    June 3 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Short walk today to Palas de Rei. It seemed as though we were often walking under a canopy of trees. Fewer pilgrims while we were walking. This is because we are only doing half stages. Most pilgrims do full stages. So the reason why we didn’t see many pilgrims is that we’re ahead of the next day’s wave of pilgrims. Tomorrow another wave will have caught up to us.Read more

  • Palais del Rei to Melide

    June 4 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Once more we were in the wave of pilgrims. Today it threatened rain and it did rain. We actually had to pull out our ponchos. It was cold too. I was fine hiking. We started hiking and 10C. Comfortable hiking weather usually and it’s fine until you stop and clothes are wet both outside and inside from sweat and rain.

There is an elusive bird here that we keep seeing and refuses to be photographed. I believe they call it a Pica here. I think it is a magpie: black and white bird. We are also seeing what I believe are wrens or warblers. Little birds with an orange chest.

  • Melide to Arzua

    June 5 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Did I mention that Melide is known for the octopus. Gotta try the octopus - pulpo - in Melide! It usually is served boiled. I thought I’d switch things up and have mine grilled, served in oil and garlic. It was very good!

On to Arzua. It was 5C when I started walking. Today will be the coolest day thus far. Fine for walking. I had two thin layers on and I was sweating from the exertion of the walk. The sun danced behind the trees and warmed me from time to time.

The walk today had steeper inclines and declines. Not much road walking. I mean, very little. I’m reminded of the Portuguese Camino, the interior route between Porto and Tui, as a contrast to this Sarria-Santiago route, it seemed like the Portuguese route was mostly road walking with the occasional wooded path. I prefer the Spanish camino. Most of the path takes you beside farmland and through dark woods. The trees provide a lot of cover when it’s drizzling. Luckily, no rain today.

A couple more days and we’ll be in Santiago.

  • Arzua to Brea

    June 6 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

I forgot to post yesterday. Yesterday was a good day. A bit warmer in the morning (12C) but only 18C in the afternoon.

Very little road walking. Some big hills. But the countryside is beautiful here.

Did I mention the guy playing bagpipes on one of the trails? Quite something to hear while walking. I was wondering where the sound was coming from. A welcome sound.

  • Brea to Lavacolla

    June 7 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This morning it was 8C and clear blue skies. The first couple of kilometres I walked alone, which was quite nice, until I caught up to the wave. A lot more people on the Camino as we near Santiago and more English speaking pilgrims. I took my time today and talked with Americans and Canadians, and a German. So far, I have met a man from New Zealand, people from Ireland, England, Italy, Israel, and South Africa. There have been a lot of Asians on the trail but I’m limited to only greetings with them, and a lot of Spaniards.

There was more road walking. It will be the same tomorrow as I walk into Santiago. Actually, I’m in a suburb of Santiago now, not far from the airport, but still a quaint little town.

  • Brea to Santiago

    June 8 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Short walk today. 10kms to Santiago. I started early, probably past only about 6 or 8 pilgrims. Arrived at the Credencia Office was number seventeen in line. A lot of people are in Santiago. I’m staying at the Seminario Menor. It sleeps a lot of pilgrims in mixed dorms. This will be my third time staying here. I reserved a bed online and I’m grateful I did. They were completely booked up. I’ve never experienced that here before. I would never have thought it to be a concern or possibility before. A lot of people.

Nothing too spectacular about the walk into Santiago. Walking mostly beside roads. Happy to be here.

I got to see the botafumeiro swing in the Cathedral de Santiago - finally! They used to only do it once a week and on Fridays and I never arrived on a Friday. Now they do it every day at the 12:00pm mass. The mass had a huge line up to get in and we arrived forty minutes before the mass was supposed to start. I got standing room by a pillar.

Heading to Madrid on Wednesday, then home.
