Never a dull moment when camping at the Daly River.

  • Picking Up Shaun From Darwin

    26. Mai 2023 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

It was a long day. I left after lunch for the 3 hour drive to Darwin with a list of supplies needed from Woolworths, BWS, Big W, BCF and Repco. After all the jobs were done I caught up with Leigh and Jenny for dinner at Stokes Hill Wharf which was great. They have $4.50 beers and a range of food shops. You sit on the edge of the wharf overlooking the 5 meter drop to the water with no rails, I do love the lack of safety rails in NT. The meal was great and at the end you throw your scraps to the fish, there were giant angelfish and trevally, mullet, milk fish and others. It was awesome to see Leigh and Jenny and hear how they were going after selling the park.
I headed to the airport for a quick snooze but it was so hot in the car and wasn’t very pleasant. Shaun arrived at 1am and off we went. We got a McDonald’s coffee on the run and chatted. Before we knew it we were half way and stopped to check out a fire on Durat Road. There were so many grass fires burning the whole bush seemed to have a red glows scattered through it. We arrived at 4am and both the kids woke up to greet Uncle Shaun. Also I had a new air bed for them as the one they were using was going down and they said they woke up three times to pump it up in the night. Shaun and I had a couple of beers to settle down then off to bed for a couple of hours sleep.
    It was a big day!

  • That’s How You Do It! Barra Fishing

    27. Mai 2023 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

After a couple of hours sleep Shaun was up and pumped for fishing.
We left the pontoon and sailed 200 meters upstream to a beautiful snag with very thick timber. It was like taking someone on a black run for their first ever snowboard lesson, it was a steep learning curve but Shaun loves a challenge. We trolled through and I demonstrated the technique perfectly resulting in a nice hit. Now it was Shauns turn, we dropped both lures in and entered the target zone. Half way through we got snagged, I said not to worry, it means we were in the zone. We freed the lines and went again. Boom! I was on and it was a river monster that gave a great fight. We landed the 89cm beauty and after the release I said to Shaun “that’s how you do it” 😂Weiterlesen

  • Campfire Cookups - Cherabin

    1. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

We had so many campfire cook ups during our stay at Lee and Jenny’s with plenty of wood and a great fire pit which was half a 45L gas bottle with legs allowing you to have a fire at one end and cook using the coals at the other. We checked our Cherabin pots daily and they just seemed to love the sun soap we were using as bait, we got plenty and preferred to eat them rather than use them as bait. Cherabin were a delicacy and enjoyed by all in garlic butter, whilst moroccan Barra was great too. Lachie and I just love Barra wings and would feast on them as often as we could, I even gave some fish to the neighbours with the proviso that we got the wings back after they filleted the fish 😊Weiterlesen

  • What A Fantastic Week Fishing!

    3. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

    Sooo many Barra!
Shaun and I had a great week landing so many fish and exploring the beautiful Daly River. There are so many birds, buffalo, crocs and of course Barra and the weather was sunny and fine all week. It was pretty hot some days but we stayed hydrated with plenty of beers and lived off dry mie goring noodles and packets of chips and shapes.
Shaun and I caught 67 legal Barra over 8 Days with my biggest being 93cm and Shauns 90cm which he got on his last day fishing. Shaun also snapped two rods on fish including my new one I had just bought for Barra fishing, We helped others to catch fish and even made one blokes day after giving him a 75cm Barra, but then giving him some tips that got him hooked up to his own fish right in front of us. One of the craziest things was when we got into a trolling circle with the charter boat and they were getting one fish every 5 trolls with 5 rods out and Shaun and I got a fish every troll and even a couple of double hookups. I think the people on the charter felt a little hard done by.
People always ask about crocodiles but the bull sharks worried us way more. We had many encounters with sharks in the river and considering we were fishing mostly 80-100klm from the ocean they come up a long way and are very aggressive. We watched Shaun’s biggest fish get smashed by a bull shark after releasing it which was sad to witness. We also lost other fish to sharks but never a crocodile, the crocs are quite calm at this time of year and such a beautiful animal to share the river with.
After the week Shaun flew home with his carry on bag filled with frozen Barra fillets for Kat and the kids to enjoy.
I had such a hard time making a video with so much great footage but I think I nailed it, and it is one of the best videos I have created.
Overall it was an awesome weeks fishing that will be very hard to top. It was also great to have my fishing buddy back with me and even better to out fish him 👊😜😂

  • Catch ups with Lee and Jenny

    6. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Lee and Jenny were kind enough to get us a big discount at a caravan park in Darwin, so we spent a few days in Darwin chilling out and hanging with Lee and Jenny.

A few dinners and beers were had and lots of stories told. The best night was when we went to Stocks Wharf for dinner. We scored a water front table which made the boys night. The highlight was the fish feeding. Once you have finished dinner or in the kids case they gave away half their dinner, you drop your scraps over the side and a heap of different kinds of fish come up to feed.

A great night relaxing, kids were kept entertained, the fish ate $10 worth of chips and Brett’s left over laska. Win win I think.

  • Finally!

    7. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Our third time to Darwin and we finally made it to the free water slides at Leanyer.

Four hours worth of water slide fun. Brax manned up and faced his fear and discovered he actually loves water slides! After a little bit of convincing, Brax jumped on a slide, I came down after him ( almost crashing into him), he turned around with the biggest smile and said “ hurry up mum, let’s go again!”.

Not only is there water slides, but there is a pool, splash park, skate park and a huge playground! We stayed until it closed, enjoying a balmy evening in Darwin, pity we didn’t have longer, I could do this everyday 😍.

  • Heading East!

    8. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

We have started our big journey east!

We are on our way to Babinda.

Lots of driving to get there, with a few little activities planned along the way.

First stop was a swim at Katherine to break up the day, then a blissful bush camp at the old airstrip. Oh did I say blissful? the kids made a sparkler bomb, so that was a little bit of excitement for the night.Weiterlesen

We left the hot days and balmy nights of the NT to head towards Queensland. As we drove east it started to get colder and colder 😩. We woke up at 5.30am for an early start and is was a chilly 8 degrees 🥶. Thankfully the day slowly heated up to a luke warm 28 degrees.Weiterlesen

  • Julia Creek

    10. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

After 2 big days of driving, we called into Julia Creek for a rest.

We had it on good authority that the creek was full of red claw, so we were on a mission.

On the way into the free camp we discovered another little, more private camp on the river. We stopped here instead, hoping that we had more of a chance of getting red claw, as we were the only ones there.

We put the pots straight in, and that night the boys pulled out 7. Brett and Lachie got up to check them early in the morning, but there was only 1. We decided to move the pots to a new location.

The kids spent the day, making live bait traps out of soft drink bottles and using the live bait to catch big, ugly cat fish!

The kids were exhausted from their late night and days adventures, so it fell to me to go check the traps with Brett. It was a horrid walk, in torch light along the muddy bank and through the spider trees 😬. But the effort paid off, we got another 7 in one of the traps.

We saved them all up to cook together. When we sat down to eat them we were all excited, as the cherabin had been so good, but unfortunately Brett was the only one who liked the red claw!

  • Age of Dinosaur Museum

    12. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

    Winton, the town of dinosaurs.

We couldn’t pass through Outback Queensland without stopping at a museum on the dinosaur trail.

We picked the Age of Dinosaur Museum, we felt that we would learn the most from this experience. We were pushing it for time, but we made it there to get all three guided tours in.

We all learnt so much. At the fossil lab we discovered how fossils move to the surface and are discovered. How they dig, preserve and move the fossils to the lab and how they are restored.

We took a large golf cart out to The Stampede. Australia’s largest fossil, found in Winton. It was discovered in a river bed and is made up hundreds of dinosaur footprints. It was taken apart piece by piece and put back together in the museum like a giant jigsaw puzzle. It was amazing listening to the talk and hearing all the different things they could tell from the footprints.

Finally, we went to the collection room, which held their most complete fossil ‘Matilda’ a sauropod. We learnt how they use the fossils to predict size, movement, and diet. We even learnt about some ways in which they thought these dinosaurs may have died through an interactive video. This was an excellent way to help the kids visualise what life would have been like for the dinosaurs 95 million years ago.

    A great experience for all.

  • When kids cook

    12. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    Yum, yum, yum 🤤

The best way to put a bit of spice into the meal prep ideas was to let the kids pick the meals and cook them! And what an amazing job they did.

Each week, they would go online, pick a meal for dinner, write a shopping list, buy all the ingredients and cook dinner that week.

Not only have they been learning the skill of cooking, but they have been learning to budget, meal plan, and they get to plan dinners they will eat 🙌.

It has been they best idea, I don’t know why we didn’t do it for all three years! The kids also love it and are always asking when they get to cook their next meal.

  • Fossicking Jealousy

    14. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

After seeing mum and dad’s Penguin’s posts on fossicking of at Sapphire I was jealous! They were where I had wanted to visit for a long time now! And posting pictures of sapphires they had found.

So…..it was decided we were detouring to Sapphire🤗 and even better mum and dad were going to stay and wait for us.

Two days and 750kms later we arrived at Graves Hill fossicking ground. I messaged Steve Dingle our fossicking friend for some tips and away we went.

After 2 days and sieving numerous buckets of dirt, we were getting very disappointed. We had found nothing, not even a speck of blue.

I gave up and went and bought a bag of wash from a local sapphire miner. It’s not quite the same as finding your own, but as I washed I found numerous sapphires, which started to make me feel better. Carol the owner grades them and teaches you what to look for in a good stone. What was even better was I got a Darren (a beautiful cutter). She called them Darren as that is the guy who cuts them for you. It was 5.6ct and what they call a party stone ( two colours).

The next day, we went to another area for a speck. Brett found a few small ones and one good size.

We all decided to get another bag of wash, mum, dad, the kids and I went into town to wash some rocks. Brett went for another speck. I got another 2 Darren’s and mum got a ripper. Brett came back with a beautiful 9ct aqua green stone. A good day all round.

Whilst we were there we also had a lovely daily visitor, who the kids loved hand feeding and a more timid nightly visitor.

So glad we made the trick down, we got to see mum and dad and find some beautiful gems.

Now to buy a mining lease and move here!

  • Burdekin River Free Camp

    19. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

On the way to Charters Towers, we passed a crop that had been harvested. We could not believe our eyes, it was full of Brolgas, hundreds of them. So we pulled up and grabbed a few pics, but it was extremely hard to capture how many were really there.

After a few hours at the skate park, we grabbed water and headed out to the free camp. Lots of people, but very spacious. We went for a walk, checked out the river and the train bridge.

We decided to try something a bit different for breakfast, fresh quail eggs. They were so tiny, so we made tiny toast to have them on. We got three each 🤣, but everyone thought they were yummy.

Brett checked the weather and we were set for a magic weekend.

We headed straight to Horseshoe Bay for hot chips and to find a spot to anchor up for the night.

We were blessed with an amazing sunset and calm seas.

After a troll and catching 2 sharks, we were all stinking hot, so we headed for Geoffrey Bay snorkel trail.

The trail was good, showcasing mainly giant clams, but off the trail was epic. The reef is so alive here, we saw at least 10 coral trout and masses of other fish. The water clarity was mint, and so was the coral. Pink, blue, purple and greens just stunning.

We spent the night back in Horseshoe Bay, eating hot chips and watching the sunset.

We dropped into this a magic spot, for the arvo. crystal clear, warm water.

As we pulled in we spotted a few fish, so we grabbed the bread and jumped in. We fed the fish while they swam around us, some even ate right out of our hands.

We swum and chilled for a few hours. When it was time to go, I said we should check out the marine protection zone. As we slowed down, massive bat fish and 2 huge cod came up to the boat. After feeding them for a bit we decided we had to get in with them. So in we jumped. It was a first for all of us. The cod was huge and loved the prawns we were feeding them. A great ending to the arvo.

  • Magnetic Island - Florence Bay Again

    25. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

After breakfast, we could not resist coming back to Florence Bay, the crystal clear water, snorkeling and fish feeding was calling us back.

This time, we headed out to explore the reef. Again crystal clear water and such a healthy reef, teaming with fish.

But the highlight of the trip begun during lunch. Lachlan was putting food over the edge (again) and then out of nowhere there were about 20 bat fish, gar fish, darts and yellow spotted cod. They were coming right up to the boat and eating bread and noodles from our hands. So many more than yesterday. We quickly finished our lunch and jumped in. We were surrounded by fish! Watching the bat fish up close eating from your hand was an unforgettable moment, they were so friendly we could pat them. No-one wanted to leave! But of course we had too!

After a quick wash, the boat and us, we pulled up to Bluewater Camp to go through our footage.

We can’t wait to plan our next boating adventure, note to self, pack lots of bread 🤣.

  • The big surprise 🤗

    26. Juni 2023 in Australien ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Brett and I have been trying to keep this secret since we left home!

And today we finally got to surprise the kids with a brand new Kawasaki KLX110rl.

We pulled up to the motor bike shop and Brett told the boys why we were there, the look of shock, uncertainty and excitement was an absolute classic. Lachlan even said ‘no your not’. So we took them straight in to check out their new bike. They could not wipe the smiles off their faces.

After a huge muck around with the bank, which had a nationwide crash making it nearly impossible to pay for the bike. We eventually loaded the bike into the boat, with the help of the 3 guys and then we were ready to roll.

What a week, a boat upgrade and a new bike. This is livin.
