  • Fireworks

    14. februar, Forenede Stater ⋅ ❄️ -5 °C

Crazy fucking Aussies decide to do the Riverwalk while snowing to watch fireworks.

Happy to report we weren’t the only crazy ones, there were quite a few of us out on the river watching. One crazy girl in a mini skirt!!!

We came, we saw, we conquered fireworks while it snowed in feels like -12 degrees.

We videoed chatted Tommy while we were on street level to show him the snow and he says ‘why do you have snow on your car Nanny’. And while video chatting with Kenz she screenshot a photo of me with fogged up glasses, I really couldn’t see where I was going 😂.

  • Wanderings to Lincoln Park Zoo

    15. februar, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

We were both too wired after our late night river walk last night for an early night. Dave nodded off about 11 and I was midnight.

Up again 7.30am as we need to start getting up a little earlier 😂. Today’s planned activity was to walk to Lincoln Park Zoo. It is free admission with gorillas, chimpanzees, monkeys, penguins, pigmy hippo, zebras, crocodile and much much more.

We walked the streets to the zoo then the lakeshore on the way back (in the snow).

The zoo was amazing, we got to see gorillas, something both of us have never seen before.

The walk along the lakeshore didn’t disappoint either especially in the snow.

Just before Navy Pier we headed back into Michigan Ave and had lunch at Chick-fil-a which all Americans seem to rave about. Yes it was nice but nothing spectacular. The only reason we wanted to try it was it has gluten free options.

We stopped off at Jewel-Osco grocery stores to get more dinners for our last nights here before heading back to the room for a rest.

Just before dinner we headed out to walk the opposite way along the Riverwalk. Man I love this place.

    We walked 17.2kms today.

  • 360 Chicago, Tilt and Route 66 sign

    16. februar, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌬 -3 °C

Today was a bit of a slow day. We were both quite exhausted, it all of a sudden hits you after about a week/week and a half into our travels each time, so we went to bed early and up late. We just lazed around for quite a while as we knew all we really wanted to do today was do 360 Chicago and the Tilt.

We were out the door about 10.30 headed for 360 Chicago. We rugged up heaps as they were saying the wind was bad outside and temps were -15. Yes it was cold but we had rugged up so much that we really didn’t feel it.

We were at 360 Chicago in about 20 mins and didn’t take long to get tickets and be up 94 floors.

We were both expecting something along the lines of One World Observatory in New York but it was a little underwhelming. We are glad we did it and got photos but we were a little disappointed.

It was time for our ‘ride’ on the tilt. We were watching other people before us and there were many people jumping back as the section started to tilt and I said to Dave ‘it must be a lot scarier than it looks’ so I was getting a bit worried.

Soon it was our time and it was not scary at all. The hardest thing was my back was really sore today so I was trying not to lean in the glass but ended up having to.

We did some souvenir shopping before heading out to The Cheesecake Factory for lunch. It is on the bottom level of 360 Chicago. We got takeaway slice of cheesecake each for dessert tonight.

On our way back to the room after lunch we stopped in at Walgreens to get something for my back. My back has always given my hassles from when I was a teenager and with all the walking and different beds we have been sleeping in, it has just given up on me today. It took all my might just to walk, each step in agony and I was worried it would just cease and I wouldn’t be able to walk for days.

Looking in the pain relief aisle and there was Tiger Balm, which always reminds me of Pop. He used to say Tiger Balm fixes everything.

Back at the unit, Dave rubbed some into my lower back and I had half hour rest in bed and it was like a miracle, the heat just eased the pain much better than the anti inflammatories I took this morning.

Dave then decides we need another walk, this time to the Route 66 sign. Back in 2017 we visited the one in Santa Monica so we had to do this one.

So off we set, Dave in charge. He said it wouldn’t be a long walk. Well we had been walking and walking and he checked maps and it was still 2.2kms away. We walked a bit more and as we were getting into the suburbs of Chicago and not the city I checked the map and we had walked straight past it 2.5kms ago!! So we turned around back in the direction of the sign. Finally found it and it was worth it.

Back in our room to do some washing before having another early night.

    We walked 11.1kms.

  • Our last day in Chicago

    17. februar, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌬 -14 °C

Well our last full day in Chicago has come to an end, we leave for the airport at 9.00am tomorrow, Washington DC bound.

Our time in Chicago has been nothing but spectacular, this city has surpassed all our expectations. It is up there with Boston as one of our favourite cities visited so far. And I have to say I did pretty bloody good with the hotel I chose.

As the weather was super cold today with a feels like of -20 degrees all day and normal temp of -14 degrees, we did some walking around the city stopping in at some shops to warm up. I did say to Dave at one stage while walking I didn’t know if it was a good thing or bad thing that I didn’t feel cold anymore 😂😂 It really is hard to believe we are experiencing a difference of about 45 degrees in temperature to back home.

As we came back to our hotel for lunch, we past a protest for President’s Day, and as are hotel is near Trump Tower, it ended there so there were lots of people and police around our hotel.

After a rest we headed out again at 3.00pm for our last walk around this magnificent city, a stroll down Navy Pier before heading back to our hotel taking in one last walk along the river. We finished off our walk with a hot chocolate and cappuccino from Starbucks.

    We walked 11.7kms.

Thank you Chicago, you have made two people very happy.

  • Washington DC bound

    18. februar, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ -17 °C

Today was pretty much a travel day. We got up early to do the final packing and cleaning of the room before heading down to the foyer to wait for our Uber. The temps outside were -20 with a feels like of -26 degrees, she really turned it on for our last day!

The drive to the airport was about half an hour, we flew out of Midway airport. I was expecting a lot bigger airport but it was quite small. We checked our bags and headed through security. I was patted down as the buttons on my jumper must have looked like I was concealing something.

It wasn’t a long wait and we were boarded. We were super happy today as we jagged exit row seats including a window seat on Southwest, that never happens as they don’t have designated seating. The plane today held about 240 passengers but there were only 58 passengers. We were one of the first passengers on.

I captured these amazing photos of Chicago and Lake Michigan. I feel very blessed. The last photo is the shadow of our plane in the cloud with a rainbow halo, pretty spectacular.

It felt like we had only just got to altitude and the pilot was saying we needed to prepare for landing. The flight was only about an hour and 20mins.

We disembarked and head to baggage claim. Again we were expecting a huge airport and this one was super small, we flew into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. We collected our bags, ordered an Uber and we were on our way. The airport is only about a 10 minute drive so we were at our hotel before we knew it. We are now an hour ahead of Chicago so another time zone to get used to.

We unpacked (well I did) and headed out the door to get some food for breakfast and dinner for the next couple of nights.

We will do a much better look around tomorrow.

    We walked 4.7kms today.

  • Washington Monument

    19. februar, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ -5 °C

Even though we are an hour ahead of what we were in Chicago (and 3 hours ahead of San Francisco), both of us found it very hard to keep our eyes open last night. Both in bed early and before we knew it, it was 9.00am.

We lounged around after breakfast and watched some television before having some lunch. We then got ready and headed out for some exploring.

As the weather was warmer than Chicago (-6 compared to -20) we didn’t layer up as much as we should have, we both felt the cold a lot. Quite a few snow flurries as we were out.

We explored the Washington Monument, the World War II memorial, Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and the Abraham Lincoln Statue. All extremely interesting.

One part of the World War II memorial just really makes you sit back and wonder. There is a wall of golden stars, many many stars. Each star represents 100 American lives lost in World War II. Just blows your mind!

We headed back to our hotel and came across an emergency situation at a CVS pharmacy. We counted over 10 fire trucks, 2 police cars, 2 battalion chief cars and 2 ambulances. Dave looked it up and there were reports of smoke in the ventilation system.

We then stopped off at Walgreens to get a couple of things before heading back to our room. We ordered Chipotle on Uber eats for dinner.

We walked 7.7kms today. Much more exploring to do tomorrow.

  • Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

    20. februar, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ -4 °C

Big day today. We made sure that we didn’t sleep in too much today as it was Paula’s day to do a few things I have always wanted to do.

First it was the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. We set off walking and the snow flurries started however it wasn’t as cold as yesterday.

We had to divert when we got close to the White House as there must have been something on there today as a lot of streets and the park were closed off and lots of Secret Service personnel.

It took us about half an hour and we were in the museum; all the museums are free.

The first floor was quite boring as it was just stuffed birds and I said to Dave that I was a bit disappointed as I thought it would be a lot more interesting.

Well happy to report when we got to the second and third floors it was a lot more interesting. So much to look at and read. Too much to photograph.

After we finished at this museum, we made our way to the Holocaust Museum. Like the other museum there was so much information to take in and way too much to photograph. Like the World War II memorial, there were 2 sections of the museum that really hit home for me - the shoes and the hair - the photos have the explanation about both. It really made me feel sick in the stomach that the human race can be so cruel and just down right sadistic.

As we left the Holocaust Museum, the wind had picked up and the icy wind just cut right through you, but the snow flurries had gone. We noticed the park was open again so we headed for The White House.

Don’t know what I was expecting but it isn’t anything I thought. It’s right in the middle of highrises and if you didn’t realise what you were looking at you would miss it. Very underwhelming indeed.

    We walked 11kms today.

  • Arlington Cemetery

    21. februar, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

We woke up this morning to no electricity. We vaguely recall a noise about 3.00am but took no notice of it. It was the hotels back up generator kicking in.

We got up to a very chilly room and got ready for our day of exploring. Couldn’t have a shower as there was no hot water and Dave couldn’t have a coffee either.

We headed out the door Arlington Cemetery bound. We took the long way around (Dave was directing again) but we got to see areas of DC we hadn’t seen before.

Walking over the bridge to Arlington was a very chilly affair, the wind was so strong it nearly blew us over. We crossed state lines into Virginia from DC when you get over the bridge.

We opted for the bus tour first and then we would explore the cemetery by foot. Arlington Cemetery was first a plantation with enslaved people and has a very long history of slavery. It is all very confusing the family lines of Arlington House, so many illegitimate children etc etc. After the plantation was forcibly taken during the Civil War it became a cemetery owned by the US Department of the Army.

The cemetery grounds are 640 acres with over 400,000 gravesites. It is mainly service men and women and their spouse and up to 2 children who are buried in one site. Not all graves are for service personnel who died in war, you can be buried there if you ever served for the American Armed Forces. However a lot of the gravesites are for fallen soldiers from all wars. Just as you start the tour of the cemetery you come across a very large red brick arch which is the old entrance to the cemetery and everything through that arch is from previous wars. If you turn around and look before you get through the arch, all those tombstones represent soldiers from the recent wars. It truly is mind blowing not only how many people lost their lives in war but however many people serve. Arlington conducts up to 30 funerals a day!!

While we were there, 17 funerals took place. One had a 10 canon salute which gave me such a fright that I nearly hit the deck as I thought it was gun fire and another had a 5 gun salute.

A few presidents and their wives plus some astronauts are also buried there. JFK and his wife Jackie plus their children who died in infancy are buried there.

There are sections of the cemetery that have large headstones but in 2014 (or thereabouts) it was decided that only the white marble tombstones would be used. These tombstones go on as far as the eye can see.

There is also the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which is guarded 24/7 all year round no matter the weather. There is the changing of the guard every 15 mins which we watched. It has been guarded constantly since April 6 1948 by The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as “The Old Guard”.

The Guard marches 21 steps down the black mat behind the Tomb, turns and faces east for 21 seconds, turns and faces north for 21 seconds, and then takes 21 steps down the mat. Next, the Guard executes a sharp "shoulder-arms" movement to place his/her weapon on the shoulder closest to the visitors, signifying that he or she stands between the Tomb and any possible threat. The number 21 symbolises the highest symbolic military honor that can be bestowed: the 21-gun salute.

I could have spent so much more time exploring the cemetery but as it was 4.00pm and we hadn’t had lunch we thought we better go.

On our way back we stopped off at the Korean War Memorial and the Veitnam Veterans Memorial. Again the long list of names of men and women who died in war just beggars belief.

We walked back into DC stopping at Chipotle for a late lunch early dinner before heading back to our room.

We were hoping the power would be back on but alas no. The managers of the hotel thought it would be later in the night so we decided to stay.

As it was cold (with no heating) and dark we went to bed at 6.30pm.

    We walked 16.4kms.
