Exploring Springdale
6 mars 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C
Today we decided that we would explore the township of Springdale. We got up and ready to go to our free breakfast at the Porter’s Restaurant which is part of the complex we are staying.
I had read reviews of the breakfasts and all were positive however we both weren’t that impressed with our meals nor the service. We understand that wait staff work on tips however when it is included in your room fee we do not believe that, unless the service is amazing, tipping should be expected. As such, as the service was not the best (I asked for no breakfast potatoes or bread as both had gluten and when I got my meal you could see where the breakfast potatoes were and been strapped off plus some were still on my plate and there was bread) and the waiter was very rude, we didn’t give a tip. We put our vouchers in the folder and walked out. Well the waiter chased us into another shop demanding a tip! We will be getting breakfast to go tomorrow!
We came back to our room and I did our blog from the yesterday and then we sorted our bags ready to hand the car back in 2 days when we get to Vegas. By this time I wasn’t feeling the best, there must have been some gluten in my breakfast. Therefore most of the day was spent near our room as I couldn’t be too far away from a restroom.
There is a little farm which is part of Bumbleberry Inn where we are staying, so of course I had to go and talk to all the animals this morning.
When I started to feel better and game to be away from a restroom, we did a quick trip up into the scenic drive of the National Park to see where we will stop off and explore tomorrow. We went for walk up to the mouth of the Narrows. As it was very overcast, the photos just don’t have the pop they need.
More exploring tomorrow.En savoir plus

Last day in Springdale
7 mars 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C
We woke up and had breakfast (got it as breakfast to go this time, didn’t want to deal with the rude waiter) and made our way to Zion to do the Scenic Drive and stop at some trails to do some exploring.
First stop was the visitors centre to have a look around. While we were there we saw that the Scenic Drive had been closed as there were too many cars on the road and in the parking lots. We decided to do the other road on the outskirts of the park and when we got back down to the entrance to the drive we thought surely it would be open. Unfortunately it wasn’t so we came back to the visitors centre, did a little walk along the Virgin River before going on a drive to the other side of town and back to the hotel for lunch.
After a bit of a relax, we did a huge walk around town, going into the residential areas to see where everyone lives. We loved this.
While Springdale is a beautiful township surrounded by the rock walls of the National Park, and the National Park has some spectacular scenery, it has been our least favourite places to visit due to not being able to see things. It just isn’t set out very well I don’t think and it’s so much busier than everywhere we have been but I think that is because of its locality to Vegas.
Anyway we can say we have been and explored. Probably not a place we would come back to again.
Next stop Vegas tomorrow with a stop off at Hoover Dam. We meet up with Kenzie in Vegas to continue our adventure through Vegas and San Francisco.En savoir plus

Today was pretty much a travel day where we left Springdale Vegas bound.
Dave follows a guy on YouTube who does offroad recoveries in a place called Hurricane. It just so happened that Hurricane was on our way to Vegas and was only about half an hour out of Springdale. Set the GPS for Matt’s Offroad Recovery and we were on our way. There looked to be a meet and greet out the front with quite a few people lining up but we just wanted to see where it was. I saw Lizzy drive out as well as the Morrvair but Dave was driving and didn’t see it.
Back on the road Hoover Dam bound this time. First it was a stint on the crazy interstate but we survived. Driving into Hoover Dam you have to go through a security checkpoint where you need to wind all your windows down for the security officer to look into your car and you answer questions about firearms and drones. We got through this and it was time to explore.
From our last visit back in 2017, Lake Mead has lowered substantially as the states around it have been in continuous drought and there hasn’t been much run off from snow falls.
It was back on the road again through Boulder City and then Henderson before hitting the crazy interstate again to get into Vegas. If we didn’t have to go through hair-raising traffic at the beginning and end of our road trip, it would be the perfect experience.
We made it to the rental car drop off without any incidents. We worked out that have driven and explored 3023kms of this amazing country in 21 days and we have loved every minute of our road tripping.
We sat at the car rental hub until Kenzie made her way over to us. Her flight was a little delayed as they had to circle for a while waiting for a time to land but it wasn’t by too much.
Ordered an Uber, had to be an extra large one as we have quite a bit of luggage and he turned up within 5 mins and we were on our way to The Cromwell.
Unpacked and it was time to explore the Strip and have dinner.En savoir plus

Hitting the shops
9 mars 2023, États Unis
After a sleep in today, we headed out onto The Strip for a quick look around in the daytime and to get our bus tickets to head to the north end of The Strip for the outlet shopping. It was a bit of a slow trip with extremely full double decker bus stopping constantly. After about half an hour to do about 5kms we were finally at the shops.
Kenz had a ball shopping getting all the things she wanted. We had lunch there and headed back to catch the bus at about 3pm and thankfully the bus trip back was a lot less crowded and a lot quicker.
By this time we had walked about 10kms so we headed back to room for a quick rest. At about 5.30pm we headed out onto The Strip again to have dinner and look through some of the Casinos. It is so bloody easy to get lost walking through the casinos as they all lead into each other. This happened to us tonight and as we came out we were up The Strip a lot further than we thought and had a long trek back to our hotel. Kenz got herself one is those big cup frozen margaritas which was extremely strong but this got us through the long trek back to the hotel.
By the time we found our way back to our hotel we had walked another 9kms and our feet were nearly dropping off.
Let’s see what we get up to tomorrow.En savoir plus

Backstreets of Las Vegas
10 mars 2023, États Unis ⋅ 🌬 21 °C
Another huge day in Vegas especially in the walking stakes, another 19.5kms down.
First port of call was getting the bus down the south end of the strip for the obligatory ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign photo. There was a bit of a line up but no where near as long as it was when we left.
From here we got the bus back into the middle of the strip and headed into the backstreets of Vegas to have a look and to go to Five Guys for lunch. You can tell we love Five Guys as we walked 4kms there and 4kms back just to have our fill.
Before we made our way back to our hotel, we looked over the shops in the centre where Five Guys was and then on the walk back we called into Cowtown Boots. I don’t think I have ever seen so many boots in one shop and we went to the boots shops in Nashville!
Back to our hotel at about 3.30pm for a break before heading out again at 5.30pm to go to the other casinos we hadn’t looked at, watch the fountains at Bellagio and the volcano at The Mirage.
Before we knew it, it was 9.30pm and our legs were stuffed so headed back to our room. Just before we got to our room this drugged up dickhead decided to walk passed me and kick me extremely hard in my shin.
Tomorrow we fly to San Francisco for 5 nights. San Francisco marks the last stop on this amazing adventure.En savoir plus

To San Francisco we go ….
11 mars 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C
Today was pretty much a travel day. We had to be out of our hotel room at 11am so just before that Kenz and I did one last walk along The Strip. We did a quick stop by the Flamingo Habitat at the Flamingo Hotel to see these gorgeous birds in the daylight and then a little walk along the strip to get some snacks.
It was then time to head back to our room grab our luggage (and Dave) and go to the Uber pick up zone for our trip to the airport.
Even though our flight wasn’t until 4.25pm, it was going to cost us money to either get a late checkout or for them to store our bags so we could walk The Strip again, so we opted to go the airport early and just people and plane watch. Time went pretty quick and we were on our way to San Francisco.
I got a window seat and was in heaven watching the scenery change heaps as we made our way to San Fran.
Flight was only 1hr 25mins so basically we got up in the air and it was time to come down again.
Once we had landed, got our bags and made our way to the Uber pickup area it was getting dark. The Uber ride to our hotel was about half an hour. When we got to the hotel, for some reason they didn’t have a room ready for us and said it would be about an hour! We needed to do some grocery shopping so they stored our bags and off we went. We hadn’t been gone 5 mins and I got a call to say they found us a room!
We got our groceries at Safeway which was only a short 10min walk and headed back to unpack and have dinner.
It looks like we will have a nice view from our room however it’s drizzly rain so will see what it is like tomorrow.
Another bucket list will be ticked off tomorrow when we explore Alcatraz.En savoir plus

Alcatraz and Fisherman’s Wharf
12 mars 2023, États Unis ⋅ 🌧 13 °C
We woke up early this morning as we had a reservation to explore Alcatraz Prison. As daylight savings started at midnight last night, we set our clocks forward before we went to sleep.
We set off at about 9.15am for our 10.35am reservation. As we didn’t really know where we were going we allowed ourselves heaps of time in case we got lost. Today we have found out that San Francisco is super easy city to find your way around so we were at Pier 33 super early but we were allowed on the earlier boat over.
Alcatraz has always been on both mine and Dave’s bucket list and today we got to tick it off; it didn’t disappoint. The history of the prison was super interesting and we spent hours wondering around the island.
Some people today should feel extremely lucky that they live in this day and age and not back then as some of the prisoners were incarcerated for a lot less than what people get away with now. Some were incarcerated in this high security prison for tax evasion.
There was one prisoner there ‘The Birdman’ who spent his whole sentence of 17 years is solitary confinement. He only had 1 hour out of his cell a day and bathed once a week. He did commit murder though.
Solitary confinement was different to The Hole which was solitary confinement in a cell that was pitch black and some prisoners spent days on end there.
So much history within the prison which I could write about for pages and pages and pages.
Many of the prisoners became prolific readers while incarcerated to fill in time and some artists. Some of the paintings the prisoners had painted are still on display in the cells.
The famous escape from Alcatraz of 3 prisoners on June 11 1962 being brothers John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris, who used spoons they had pilfered from the mess hall to remove their vents and dig their way through the cement walls. They then went through an unused utility corridor, and entered the San Francisco Bay aboard an improvised inflatable raft to an uncertain fate.
After a few hours on the island, we caught the boat back to Pier 33, making our way to our hotel for lunch and to do our laundry.
In the afternoon, we explored the many shops at Fisherman’s Wharf and by the time we had finished it was 7.30pm, so made our way back to our room for dinner.
Tomorrow we are hoping it isn’t raining as much and we will explore Lombard Street as well as other famous streets in San Fran before getting the tram to Chase Center for the NBA game at 7.00pm.En savoir plus

Beautiful San Francisco
13 mars 2023, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C
Now that we have been to both LA (in 2017) and San Fran (this trip), we both are loving San Fran so much more than LA. Downtown LA really turned us off the West Coast of America, we have never felt so unsafe in our lives. We did however love Santa Monica and Venice Beach (though parts of VB were a little sketchy as well). Having said that, I am sure there are parts of San Fran that are extremely unsafe having travelled through some of them last night on the bus but here at Fisherman’s Wharf we all feel very safe.
Today we went on a walk to Lombard Street which wasn’t far from our hotel however we had to walk up some very steep hills to get there. Lombard Street is known as the “Crookedest Street in the World”. It is one of San Francisco’s most popular landmarks. Every year, millions of visitors walk or drive down its eight sharp hairpin turns. It is a beautiful sight to see and walk however it was really hard to get a good photo. We got a leg workout walking to the top and then for another hour around the neighbourhood both up and down the steps hills of San Francisco.
After walking for a couple of hours looking at the sights, we headed back to our room for some lunch. After lunch, Kenz stayed back in the room to get ready for the basketball game and a bit of a relax while Dave and I went for walk to the Sea Lions at Pier 39. I could have stayed there all day to watch their antics, they are super funny and very intelligent.
From here we went to the San Francisco Maritime Historic National Park mainly to get a closer look at the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s a beautiful little area on the bay with a big park, a ‘beach’, a view of the Golden Gate and many old ships. We will head back again and have a look through the museum tomorrow as it is supposed to be raining and very windy.
As it was nearly time to make our way to the basketball, we headed back to our room for a quick freshen up and we were out the door again in the direction of the bus stop to head to the Chase Center.
We had to take the 30 Stockton Bus 13 stops to 4th & Market St and just before the second last stop, there was huge delays. As I was standing I could see that there were heaps of police and a bus with police tape on it. Dave looked and said no, that’s just the strap that holds the bus onto the power lines and looks like it has come off. Nope I was right, as we went passed the bus I could see in and there was a couple of seats covered in bright red blood and bandages/towels/clothing. As the bus went further, I saw many police interviewing people, others searching and 2 police officers tackle a kid and handcuff him. Not much further from here, it was the stop for us to get off to get the 15 bus to Chase Center. After 2 stops on the 15 bus we were at the Center ready for a great night.
While we were waiting for the game to start, we searched news feeds and found that an altercation broke out between youths on the bus before us, one pulled a knife and attacked another leaving him with life threatening injuries. It happened about 10 mins before we got there and we ever so grateful it wasn’t the 30 bus we were on.
The game between the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns was amazing, the atmosphere, the game, our seats, everything was perfect. Warriors won 123 to 112. Another bucket list item ticked off.
Even though we were in the nose bleed seats, the seats we had were amazing, clear view of the court and we didn’t have to watch the big screens at all.
Fantastic game and fantastic night!En savoir plus

Rainy San Fran
14 mars 2023, États Unis ⋅ 🌬 13 °C
We woke up a little late this morning as we only got to bed about 12.30am after the basketball. Unfortunately we woke up to rainy windy weather and it said that it was to continue all day.
We had quite a bit planned today and got most of it done but still quite a bit to do on our last day tomorrow.
We set off to go through the San Francisco Maritime National Park, which the entry fee was included in our National Park Pass. Thank goodness it was as it really wasn’t worth the $15 per person entry fee we would have had to pay. It said that the entry fee covers entry onto all the ships within the park. Not sure why but all the ships were closed off except 1.
From here we went to see the sea lions again as Kenzie didn’t get to see them yesterday. Well they didn’t disappoint again, I really could watch them all day. One little guy was sitting in the middle of the Pier 39 sign, it was like he was posing and inviting everyone to take a photo of him!
Then it was shopping time, Kenz wanted to buy a few things as did we. While shopping Kenzie and I went on the gorgeous carousel at Pier 39.
By the time we had finished shopping, the rain had gone and the sun was shining so we headed back to our room for a quick lunch and then we were going to go for a ride on the historic cable cars. Well by the time we had finished our lunch and headed outside the rain had come back. We still headed towards the depot and the closest we got the heavier the rain got. We bought our tickets and lined up but the rain just got too heavy, the fog thick and the wind strong so we decided to go through a few more shops before heading back for a relaxing afternoon (well what was left of it, it was 5.30pm). We will head there first thing in the morning.
Last full day here tomorrow before the long haul flight home Thursday. It is supposed to be sunny all day tomorrow so a big day is planned!
A hilarious moment happened on the way back to our hotel. Kenzie ordered a takeaway hot chocolate from Starbucks and was asked her name - she said ‘ah Mackenzie’. Check out the name on the cup 😂😂😂En savoir plus
