The Belam Palace. there is a museum apparently in there, but it looked rather quiet.
the official residence sin 1910, 3.3 hectares. The garden is 7 acres were were told. It was first leased from the monks in the mid 16th century. later The king used it as a holiday estate (king joa V). I believe this is where the royal family went after the 1755 earthquake.

The tree trunk had grown into the bench. that was the outdoor patio for the cafe, perhaps it is open in the summer??? and this is not yet the summer season.

The other building?? maybe an old aviary.

Monkey puzzle, same one we have at Bloedel. Draceno, amazingly large, and Italian stone pine, one of the one that is the source of pine nuts used for pesto.

the botanical garden closed at 8 pm. We then wandered over to the church and Monestary and down towards the maritime museum which of course had closed hours ago.

they had a nice courtyard with lots of old anchors and some boats on display.

someone was walking their beagle and he barked just like wesley.....and very obedient when his owner gave him food.

we crossed the street to the plaza in front of the Belem Cultural centre. Colin said it reminded him of Revolution square in Cuba, large open space, industrial buildings.もっと詳しく

This was built in 1960 honouring the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator by rebuilding a giant riverside monument which had originally been constructed for the 1940's world fair.

It takes the shape of a huge caravel ship in full sail with Henry at the helm and explorers on board behind him.

There is one woman, his mom Phillipa of Lancaster (she was british) there was a strong English/portuguese alliance.

Behind henry on the west side is King Manuel holding his armillary sphere, poet Comoes, on the east side is vasco Da Gama and Pedro Cabal ( he 'discovered' Brazil)

There is this huge marble map in the pavement, showing the portuguese 'discoveries' around the world..... and then the tiles surrounding that marble map are in the shape of waves and do give the optical illusion of movement and uneven terrain.もっと詳しく

This was built 1515-1520, a white Manueline building protecting Lisbons tower. Lots of carved stones representing ropes, manuals coat of arms, armillary spheres and shields with the cross of the Order of Christ charged with spreading the fait in the new territories.---rick steeves

It was of course closed, but the sun came out just briefly as we approached. I got some good shots with the other camera, but not the cell phone, it had died in the botanical garden... surprise surprise.

Colin and I both dipped our hand in the Atlantic sea here, at one time this tower was further out into the water, but now after reclamation of the land it is accessible at low tied. Kind or like the island in front of the cabins we use to stay at at Tofino. only accessible at low tide.もっと詳しく

Walked back towards the train where we knew there were a couple of restaurants. We checked out one, on the water, but very pricy for seafood. We checked out the other, also on the water, but a bit back. It was ittalian and not so pricey. We split a salad, Pizza and profiteroles (a cream puff filled with vanilla custard or ice-cream or cream and drizzled in chocolate. Yum Yum. Nosolo Italia was the name of the restaurant.もっと詳しく

this is literaly just above where we are staying. We didn't realize there was this big bridge like the golden gate bridge until we had gone to the Castle the other day, because we are down low under this view point by about 3 stories. We can see the restaurant, and hear the noise from the restaurant, but no view from our apartment. we also get a lot of music, as there are lots of street musicians at the view point at night. We just came from there this eve and someone was playing the sax. Very busy again, because tomorrow is the parade of St Anthony - the saint of the sardine ---- this parade is where different neighbourhoods will compete with each other for the best dance?? In the meantime streets are busy and noisy, and lots of music and drinking, although not as much as Saturday night.

When you go up to the view point you see the bridge, the Ponte 25 de Abril. (25th of April Bridge-which commemorates the carnation revolution when Salazar was ousted) Built in 1966. train platform added in 1999. It looks like the Golden gate bridge, but was not the same company that built this one.

There is a huge Christ statue on the other side, to the left of the bridge. It looks identical to the one in Cuba. Cristo Reio (Christ the King). Inspired by Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio De Janeiro.

-Our deck with echeverias growing in the window box. we look down into a common courtyard shared by at least 3 units??

There is an unusual statue at the view point and a huge grevillia tree. Grevillia robusta.

Colin liked the graffiti.....Guess it translates in all languages. ....politicians blabbering on and the dog doing his thing.

the building is the museum of pharmacy?? but there is a restaurant out front as people were eating there at lunch and again tonight when we went by. A beautiful building.

There is glass embedded in the top of the wall to prevent people from hoping the fence into the rooftop restaurant. I guess a good idea if that is a problem, and cheaper than barb wired. Innovation...もっと詳しく

This is a church along one of the tram lines just down a street from the lookout. When you go down the side alley it leads to a restaurant, school and apartments. Good utilization of the space.

The sign we think means no commercial vehicles. In those alleys that is a good idea as they are very narrow in the historic area.

I like the street lights. We have the same one outside our window, very bright at night and very decorative.もっと詳しく

We wandered up another street that had an interesting building. This one apparently is a hospital, but formerly may have been a church. there was a parking garage under the church.

there was a school close by too, looks like some of our schools.

we saw another interesting building in the distance. and I thought it was one we had passed earlier when we came back from picking up the key with the luggage on Friday. So we decided to go check it out as it looked interesting on Friday, but with all that luggage on the steep streets we weren't doing any detours. Today we had time so we tried to get there.

We veered up when we should have stayed on the same street and ended up in a different area slightly, but eventually we ended up on Bento ave and that was what we had walked on on thursday. IN the meantime there were some lovely houses with great tile work that we passed.

There was also a little entry, like the closes in Edinburgh that lead into an inner courtyard.もっと詳しく

also called the Palacio de Sao Bento. Massive neoclassical building is the seat of Portuguese parliament.

Started in the 1500's as a Benedictine Monastery of Sao Bento. after the dissolution of the religious orders in 1834 the building became the seat of Parliament known as the Palacio das Cortes.

The guards outside actually changed position while we were there.

Great view from the top, and barricades set up at the foot of the stairs, probably to prevent anyone trying to rush the doors.

Wandering up from the government building up to this Basilica Da Estrela.

Beautiful Jacarda trees contrast with the blue building.

I like there drainage ditches, nicely tiled.

a hard ware store......nothing like our local canadian tires, just a small petite store.

the basilica was next to a turnaround for the trams.

Basil plants: this from a website. they are part of the festival as St Anthony is the matchmaker saint. and males are suppose to give these to their female partners.....

"Starting June 12, Lisbon honors the city’s patron saint with a 3-day festival. The 12th is the feast day of St. Anthony, who is also known as the matchmaker saint.

Lisbon’s festival begins with a feast of sardines, a tradition that dates back to 13th century Italy. When locals didn’t care to listen to St. Anthony’s sermons, he took to the sea and delivered them to the fish.

The festival is also a time to celebrate love and marriage prospects. Single women stand small statues of St. Anthony upside down, awaiting the day that he delivers a viable husband (which is when the statue will be placed upright). Men partake by delivering basil plants to loved ones with poems attached. Basilica De Estrela - Maria I daughter of Jose I vowed she would build a church if she bore a male son. She did so she built this church in 1779, unfortunately her son died of small pox just before it was completed. 1790.

The huge domed basilica set on a hill in the west of the city is a landmark in Lisbon. The church was built by architects from the Mafra schooling Late Baroque and Neoclassical style.

the facade is flanked by twin bell towers and decorated with an array of statues of saints and allegorical figures.

the spacious interior (no photos inside) where light streams down from the pierced dome is clad in grey, pink and yellow marble.

The elaborate empire style tomb of Queen Maria 1 lies in the right transept. Locked in a room nearby is Machado de Castros extraordinary Nativity scene, composed of over 500 cork and terracotta figures (we skipped this it was 2 euoros)

There is a tomb of Maria inside the Basilica. She died at age 81 in Brazil, during the napoleanic wars when the royal family had fled to Brazil. They brought her body back to bury her in her basilica.

we climbed up to the top of the basilica 2 euros each.

232 stairs up, circular staircase like those in scotland's castles.

there was a nice little courtyard garden at the bottom of the stair case.

Great view from the terrace. You can see the Castle de Jorge that we had walked up to on Sunday, and the Church Graca with the single rounded dome, and the green lookout at Monte.

Inside the cupola. No signs that hyou can't take pictures here. Very high up, You can see the 3 different colours of marble. The church itself was closed at this point and would reopen at 3.

This is the garden across the street from the Basicilla.

We had lunch here at a vegan cafe. Cheese, Tomato toast, with a cabbage salad and mango dressing. Cheesecake for desert, it was crumbly, not overly sweet, very nice.

Laid out in the middle of the 19th cenruy the popular gardens are a focal part of the Estrela quarter. the formal gardens are lane with herbaceous borders, shrubs surrounding plan trees and elms. The central feature of the park is a green wrought iron bandstand decorated with elegant filigree where musicians strike up in the summer months. Built in 1884, and original stood on the Passeio Publico before the creation of Avenida da Liberdade.

There were a couple of ponds, one on the terrace/patio where we had lunch. The stuatue was outside of one of the entrances to the garden. I think it Might be Vasco Da Gama.

Thats the bandstand

a great succulent collection, the opuntia (prickly pear cactus) was in bloom, one was yellow O. indicc-ficus, and the other was pink.

I think that is a guava flower in blossom - Acca sellowiana, Ray has had this for sale at our plant sale over the years, I remember typing it in for his invoices!! Not sure if it actually fruits in our climate in Vancouver, but it sure is beautiful.

That is the Dragon tree - Dracaenea draco It has very spiky foliage and looks a lot like a yucca or one of the cordyline palms but the branching structure is much lower.
great information panel at the University of Lisbon Botanical Garden - the Red Resin , Dragons blood , has been used medicinally and as a dye by many cultures over the centuries. Native to the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and NW Africa. Flowers at 20-30 years of age and shows "dichotomous ramification' that is the branching structure splits. so that is why such an interesting branching structure.

the statue colin is looking at, not sure who it was, but look at that philodendron growing on the rocks behind Colin. It is huge.もっと詳しく

There is a Yucca? or is it a dracaena in bloom.

and that is a palm in bloom. the long narrow pendulous flower cluster. there are some fruits also next to it in a similar structure.

We head back to the basilica to see the inside, where we can't take pictures, but it is very impressive.

the carvings Statues of Faith Adoration, Liberality and Gratitude are on the four columns.

the bas relief which adorns the frontispiece represents the adoration to the sacred Heart of Jesus.

the four niches in the facade house statues of saints related to the order of Carmelites - Saint Elijah, and Saint John of the cross, above and Saint Thereisa of Avila and Saint Mary Magdalene of Pazzi below.

The bell gables of the twin bell towers are topped with trimmed turrets and adorned with flamboyant stone ornaments,. There is a clock face on each bell tower.

A clerestory with surrounding veranda crowns the majestic dome over the transept. A sphere supporting an iron cross tops the celestory.

We leave the Jardine Estrala and go down a hill along Rue Santo Amaro, then back up a hill along R. da Imprensa Nacional.

along the way some nice tiling on the apartments, a goose neck yucca on someones balcony.

This complex owned by the university of Lisbon, comprises 2 museums and 4 hectares (10 acres) of gardens.
