  • Vancouver international airport

    June 5, 2018 in Canada ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

we leave Vancouver international for our trip. we leave on june 06, but I had to adjust it to jun 05 so this would be the first posting.

Keegan drove us out to the airport and they picked me up from work at 430.....we were at the airport way too early. ......

Had a nice dinner at the Koho, burgers.....

our flight was 9 hours, got dinner on the plane too at around 10 pm..... then try to sleep a bit and got break. The lights on the a380 airplane are adjusted to simulate morning sun so you can wake up even though it is 8 hours ahead of time.

    London

    June 6, 2018 in England ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

BA 084 from Vancouver To london departing at 2055......Colin lead me to believe departing at 2000 and got me to the airport hours early......

We did have a great dinner with Keegan though since we got there early and he was our Chauffer.

Not a lot of sleep on the airplane. We left on time and arrived at Heathrow terminal 3 at 1400. they are 8 hours ahead of us and the flight is 8 1/2 hours

We had dinner and breakfast on the plane. Curry chicken with bun, salad, sticky toffee pudding and of course Tea in a plastic cup!!

We are now in Heathrow terminal three waiting for our connecting flight to Lisbon which doesn't leave till 2025. Then another 3 hours to Lisbon so we will be staying at a hotel close to the airport since it will be rather late.

there are no quite spots to wait in Heathrow terminal 3. We are "gate hopping' moving from the waiting areas in closed gates so we can see outside. The main area to wait is like a busy busy shopping mall which I would rather avoid. The problem with waiting in the closed gate areas is as soon as the open the gate we have to leave :(

Lots of fun earlier having to do my morning face wash, teeth brush in the public washroom. Lucky colin bought those towels or I would not have been able to dry my face.

Off again to find another quite "closed' Gate

Having issues downloading my photos from the phone onto the google photos. So no photos to add to this posting......the pics may have to wait till we get home.. UGH. trying with Flicker and also running into issues. My phone doesn't want to work on the free wifi for some reason.

    Gulbenkian museum

    June 8, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We checked out of our hotel at 12 noon, and luckily they were ok holding our bags. Because the museum was so close to the place we were staying I thought it would be a good idea to see that museum today while we had to wait till 3 to check into the apartment. we did navigate our way to the subway where we got a viva via gem card. This is just like our compass card and you "zap" it when you enter and exit the stations.

We walked to the Gulbenkian.....amazing museum. Lots and lots and lots of stuff to see. They had some lovely Egyptian reliefs, and carvings done in Obsidian and Basalt. Volcanic rocks from somewhere.

They had an amazing persian section. Lots and lots of tiles, persian rugs, silk pillows. You can see the influence of the ottoman/turk tiles on the portuguese azalejo tiles.

Then there was an asian section that we had to skip, just not enough time.

Some pretty amazing french provincial furniture

Then a lot of paintings, Turners, Rembrantds, more Dutch painters I didn't recognize, Gainsborough (english), Manet and Monet, Renoir, and some sculptures by Rodin. Eternal springtime one of my favourites ( I wouldn't have known the name unless i saw it, i just recognize the sculpture).

Unfortunately the gift shop was out of the English guides, but they gave me an email address so I hope to get it on line in the future. We did pick up a small English language book on Gulbenkian himself the man.

after the museum, colin gave me to 4, i renegotiated till 5. we hit a small cafe where we had espresso and 2 lovely egg type desserts. Very yummy and only 4 euros total. I think we worked off the desert on our hill climbing to find the apartment!

We went back to the hotel, pick up the luggage, and took the metro. Transferring from the yellow line (campo pequeno) to the green line. We took the green line to the end Cais do Sodre. Then the uphill climb to our place, but it is rather close so when we leave it will be quick to go downhill to the metro and back to the airport. taking the red line.

    Lisboa, outside the Gulbenkian

    June 8, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

wander back from the Gulbenkian to the VIP Zuric hotel to pick up our luggage and head to the Bario Alto where our apartment is.

The streets remind me of cuba, lots of exposed wiring, some beautifully maintained buildings, others not so much, but not quite as run down as Cuba. Many in Cuba were crumbling. Here just lots of Grafiti.

We had a snack at this little cafe before getting back tot he hotel then off on the metro.

    Bario Alto Portugal

    June 8, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    We made it!
We didn't realize you need to go to the Homing office to pick up the key. We took the metro from our hotel last night. We navigated that with success, and we found the apartment from the metro.......all up hill, and I mean up hill!!.....only to find out we have to pick up the key elsewhere. We also didn't know that you have to type in 00 to get the phone numbers to work so when we called the office it told us not in service!!! Now Colin is stating to get a little worried. luckily we have an address for the homing office but it is 24 minutes away by foot.. So off we go. Someone was smiling down on us as we started to head back down another hill a taxi cab came along and we got him to take us to the office. He told us this month is the Festival of Saint Anthony the Saint for Portugal so lots of excitement and parties in the city because of the festive. We make to the homing office where we get the key. they were a bit surprised that we found the apartment, but didn't find them! They also told us we are in the historic district so no uber drivers can come in because cars are not allowed. That is not surprising when you see how narrow these streets are. It is really very beautiful with the cobblestone, rock for paving. Walking along it pulling luggage is a bit of challenge, especially when it is very steep uphill or very narrow at the side of the street.....and they have construction blockages.....but all the same very quaint. Taxi cabs are allowed in. Our cab ride to the homing office cost 7 euros so we decided to walk back from the homing office. We got off track a couple of times, but for the most part it was ok. The tram actually goes down these same narrow streets. Amazing. We got a bus card, just like the compass card, and we can reload it. it is good for the Metro, Bus, Tram and maybe the train out to Sintra too, if we actually make it out to Sintra this trip. So much to see. We are going to get our exercise!! Lots of hillsRead more

    bario alto

    June 8, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Just sitting in the apartment with all the windows open. Music flowing in from one of the many restaurants around here. Some on the rooftops!. We are up on the 2nd level and of course you see over to your neighbours places. there is a tile roof too that we look out onto. They are playing abba like music in a traditional portuguese rhythm.

Have to head out to get something to eat!.

i am adding pics of dinner to this post, no room on the next one :)

So far it is pretty amazing.

Kendra you would have loved the pottery that we saw this morning. The changes from the greek, phoencian to the turkish, changes in glazing methods. Lots and lots of plants shows, tulips, carnations, hyacinth, roses, prunus, cypress, it goes on and on. I took lots of pics which I will have to upload at a later time.

bario alto Portugal Eve stroll festival

    June 8, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Eve walk looking for dinner, after we had called the bank because we thought I had lost my wallet. Turns out luckily colin had my wallet in his back pocket. They look the same. Unfortunately they had already blocked my card so i won't be using my credit card......not too much of a problem in Colins' eyes !!

Because of the Festival of St Anthony our neighbourhood is very very festive and busy. So we just ha to walk out of our lane to the next lane and there was this barrbequ set up with tents and you just order. We had sardines, poached bata (potato), Choirso (Sausage, very salty), bread and Salade verge (green salad). it was all very good Sangeria and Cervosa to drink and you can wander the streets with your drinks. All very civilized, but all in plastic containers with plastic cutlery.....well I guess while in rome do as the romans.

after dinner we wandered, the lanes/streets are full of people, barbecue, food, booze, music. live music in some of the small squares. Because we are in the historical district there are squares everywhere and lanes everywhere. It goes every which way.

The Bica elevator was closed so you can walk up the tram line. There are houses and restaurants all along the line and it is so narrow. I can't imagine having my door open out to the tram. you probably only have 2 -3 feet of clearance.

at the top of the elevator we cam out to R loreta. Found a small grocery stores where we got breakfast supplies....except the bread as we think we will find a bakery close by. Even the cafe we had dinner at last night seemed to regularly sell bread stuffs. we got to this square Praca de cambes, where there was this large statue with at least 12 guys around it. Not sure who it was as so many people sitting around it. There was this lovely tiled mosaic around the square. Lots of portuguese boats. Caravel I think is the name for the old fashion boat. The older ones were triangular shaped sails good for going along the coastline down to Africa, and over to India when they started trading. Later the sails changed to Square shape for ocean going.

IN the square there were street musicians, flute, clarinet, small guitars, electric guitar and singer. It was beautiful. The young women's voice was soft, but they had amplifiers. Many people listening, another couple danced so we joined them. had to put the groceries down first! All the songs were in english.

Then we wandered down the Rue Garret. I think this is a main shopping district. The Bario Chiado metro stop was right there with a statue of a poet Ferando Pessoa out front.

the street lamps were lovely with tree like branches enveloping the metal.

we found a gellato shop, very busy, but the cones were cool. 4.8 euros for med. Almost like Ernest!! they did them in the shape of roses. We think we should pass that on on to Oliver and maybe he can let Ernest know.....it was all very cute. Amorino Chiado

We kept walking to the end of the street where there is a big sign over the building. Armazens do Chiando....a shopping mall. But out front they had had a stage set up and a band playing. They were taking the stage apart by the time we got there, around midnight.

we wandered down Rua Nova Almada, more shops and getting quieter, then turned onto Calcada Sao Francisco. It was a curvy street going uphill. Vey quite, at the end we heard mor music so we headed towards that. Ended up in the "pink street nightlife" area along Rue Nova do Carvalho.

Then we got a bit twisted around as I thought were were above Ruo S. Paulo. the street that would take us back, but we thought Carvelho was below this, and in fact it is above it so we went a block in the wrong direction, but stumbled upon some neat buildings and another sure. The buildings looked great at night all lit up. eventually we had to pu our google maps on to figure out where we were as we actually went beyond where we should have turned up to get back to the apartment. Only 1 block so not so bad, but because there is no grid system here you really need google maps to show you which lanes you need to wander up, which steps. You could get quite lost very easily without good maps. Some of the lanes are only lit when you go into them. the hotel last night was like that, motion sensors figuor out when you get out of the elevator and only then do the lights come on. Lots of good innovations here to conserve power. we could learn!

anyway we eventually made our way back to the apartment, probably around 1 am, Our lane was a bit smelly as I think it was the local pea hole with all those guys wandering around with their Cervosa :). Still lots of music happening!, but because it was getting late, although we were not particularly tired we headed to the apartment and to bed. all that noise was not a problem, once you shutter the window here, no light and very little sound come in. So we actually slept to 1130 this morning!

Now we have to do some reading, have breaky and head out for more explorations today!!

weather is sunny and warm, with a breeze, we are still under the flight path, same as the hotel last night, light music streaming through the windows its all very cool.

    bario alto

    June 9, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

pics out the window of our apartment this morning......we got up at 1130 as we slept in. that's what happen when you go to bed at 1400.

During the festival the entertainment stops at 4 am on Friday and Saturday. the rest of the week it will be 2 am. During the parade day it will be 4 am, and parade day is June 12.

considering all this noise in our neighbourhood, once the windows are shut and the shudders closed on top of them you don't hear a lot. Obviously as we slept through everything....

The street view with all the flags is where we had our dinner last night.

Mirandoura porta do sel in the Alfama

    June 9, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We took the Bica funicular up to the top and connected with the #28 Tram just to see where it goes. The Bica funicular was the one we walked up and down last night. Today it still has lots of people on it walking up and down, but they get out of the way when the tram goes up or the other one goes down. There are only 2 trams on this one. I think I read it opened in 1892.

We connected easily with the tram and took it til it went past this cool church. Se Catedral. We didn't get off there, but instead the next stop. You have to push the red button to let the driver know you want off. Then you exit via the rear. So we ended up in this beautiful square with a great view. Colin and I were sitting on opposite sides of the tram, and it was crowded so when he saw this great view he yelled at me to see if I wanted to get off. You have to be quick or the door closes and you miss your stop.

this is the Miradourado Portas do Sel. plaza. It was created when some buildings were torn down in the 1950's so they didn't rebuild and instead had this great view point. It is right next to this old church which is built above the old wall.

This 8th century fortified wall marked the boundary of Moorish Lisbon (it felt a bit like the walls of old Havana,, but that was 16th century). the porta do Sel was the sun gate, the entrance to the old city. You can still see a couple of places where the walls are still visible.

We had an espresso (.80 Euro) and a Samosa on the patio. Steeves says it is the most scenic cup of coffee in town and he was right! we read that after we stumbled on it. There is a statue of St Vincent in the square. We took a selfie as we had our coffee.

there were a couple of cruise ships in town so very busy with cruise visitors as the docks have been recently reclaimed (100 yes) out into the river Tagus river. You can see the docks from the terrace and there is an elevator close by in another square we went to Largo Santa Luzia so the cruise ship people can get up the hill. It would be more fun to go down the stairs next to the old wall, but we ran out of time to do that.

we did go partway down these stairs and there were public washrooms there, but it costs .5 euoros to use it. There was a really cool cartoon mural there that showed the history of Portugal.
