    Gatwick to Southampton

    July 28 in England ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

On our way by train to Southampton after being rescued by a friendly Aussie couple. They got us to Chichester after bad advice from a ticket agent. All is well except for the usual jet lag.

  • Southampton

    July 28 in England ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Southampton is familiar to Americans as a cruise port, its association with the Titanic and as a 10th century walled city . More personally, my dad shipped out from NYC 1918 to serve in the infantry during WWI, disembarking here for some training before landing in LeHavre, France. Dan and I visited in 2017 enjoying a brew at the Dancing Man Pub, formerly a woolen house and later a maritime museum. Today, after a pint of Big Bad Stout, we wandered through the old town - the walled part of the city center. After passing through arches in the wall, we found a huge retail/entertainment center, IKEA, Mark's and Spencer. Now our 3-hour jet lag nap has refreshed us!Read more

  • Sailing day

    July 29 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Checking out the changes to the NCL Dawn. Found our favorite hot tub and a place to relax and read.

  • Waterford on foot

    July 30 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Waterford was founded by the Vikings and the heritage remains everywhere you walk. Ireland's oldest city is very walkable and unique. The locals are helpful and friendly - cruisers boost their economy!Read more

  • Cork, Ireland

    August 1 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Never made it to Cork but took a trip into the countryside to tour a few castles. The drive was long but worth the views and a taste of Irish food for lunch.

  • Dingle, Ireland

    August 1 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

The little town of Dingle had much to offer for those of us who wanted to explore on foot. Dan and I were amazed at the quality of their aquarium and small but lovely butterfly sanctuary, otters, Humboldt penguins and a wide variety of ocean and river species from around the world.Read more

  • Foynes, Ireland

    August 2 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Today we are staying in the village of Foynes which was a hub for "flying boats" in the 1930's and 40's. Visited their museum - what a great choice! The biggest surprise was the connection to the actress Maureen O'Hara who married a Brigadier General in the US Air Force and a pilot for this type of aircraft. In addition to a life-size replica of the Yankee Clipper was a huge archive of Maureen O'Hara memorabilia - costumes, film posters, video clips, and her honorary Oscar. Makes me want to watch some her films when we return. Now relaxing at the Foynes Inn beer garden.Read more

  • Galway

    August 3 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Just finished a private walking tour through Galway's city center. Our guide, Gary, was so personable and such a great historian!! He even guided us to a less-crowded pub down a side street and a Claddaugh jewelry store with a little history museum in the back. Gorgeous weather today and streets filled with tourists, shoppers, and locals on the last weekend of the Galway Races. A market today in 300-year old Eyre Square features food trucks, vendors/artisans of locally made goods, and great coffee. We aren't done yet! Still have more exploring to do before tendering back to the ship.Read more

  • More Galway

    August 3 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Although Ed Sheeran is from England, he was a busker on the streets of Galway. Lots of street musicians are entertaining in the center of Galway today.

  • Canceled Ports

    August 5 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Disappointed to have the last 2 days in port canceled! We were leaving Galway yesterday as Storm Floris was moving into Northern Ireland. The ship headed back the way we had just come, sailing south overnight, hugging the southern coast, past Cork and Waterford. Off shore of Dublin this morning, the captain canceled the tenders due to rough seas. Tomorrow no tenders are needed in Belfast, our last stop. Time for a Bloody Mary!!Read more

  • Belfast

    August 6 in Northern Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Belfast ship-building history is legendary, especially as the home of the Titanic. Their Titanic Experience museum is amazing and recognized as one of the top tourist attractions in the world. It deserves that accolade, after almost 3 hours inside and a side visit to the SS Nomadic which served as a tender for the Whlte Star Line cruise ships, including the Titanic. It was also a mine-sweeper and a troop carrier in WWI and WWII followrd by life as a restaurant in Paris. It finally came back to its home in Belfast on a barge since the engines had been removed.Read more
