    Our flight home had a stop off in Dubai and we decided to spend a few days here exploring. It was very different to what we were used to in Africa - all very modern and clean! I almost cried with happiness when I walked in and saw the hotel room - no more cold showers filled with spiders and frogs! We spent a bit of time chilling by the pool during the day (temperatures got up to 40 degrees so we couldn’t do much else) and explored Dubai in the evenings. One of the highlights was the fountain and light show which we watched from a balcony while having dinner. We also saw the worlds highest building and the next night we went to a rooftop bar for cocktails and visited the Dubai Mall. After this we finally headed home!Läs mer

    SOUTH AFRICA

    Last country on our tour of Africa was South Africa. We pretty much just headed straight to Cape Town and spent a few days here. Most of the activities in Cape Town are weather dependant meaning we had to wait until we got the go ahead for most activities. We were really keen to do shark cage diving but it was cancelled the day before we were due to go out.
    We then decided to visit Robben Island and as we were due to board the ferry it was also cancelled. Luckily they let us join the group heading out the next morning. Robben island is where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner for 27 years and was very interesting to see. We even got to see the tiny cell he was kept in.
    The final activity we did was Table Mountain - again we had to wait for a break in the clouds for them to open the mountain and decided to get the cable car up and down instead of walking in case they closed it early. The views were amazing and it was a great way to finish our trip.    Läs mer

    Namib Desert

    Our next stop was the Namib Desert and definitely the hottest place on our tour of Africa. We camped out in the desert and spent the next day exploring. Firstly we walked up 'dune 45' which is the 45th sand dune in the national park, and the only one they allow you to walk on. After spending nearly 6 weeks on a bus and barely doing exercise we found this much harder work than it should have been! Then we walked in the dead valley. There used to be water there until the sand dunes cut off the supply and this left all the trees in a fossilized state. It was nice to see but I was pleased when we were able to move on and leave the heat behind.
    The next day we visited the Fish River Canyon which is the second biggest canyon in the world and the biggest in Africa, we watched the sunset here and then continued our journey to South Africa.    Läs mer

    NAMIBIA - Etosha/Spitzkoppe

    Next we crossed the border into Namibia. Our first stop was Etosha National Park for another safari. The main reason for this safari was the hope that we may get to see a rhino, as we had only managed to see one miles away in the Serengeti and we didn't feel we had don't the 'big 5 properly'. The safari vehicle was completely open and just as we set off on our day long drive it started to pour down with rain, luckily it didn't last too long and we managed to stay dry most of the time. We saw lions, zebras, elephants, giraffes and we were lucky enough to see a black rhino! As this was our last safari we were pleased to have been able to tick off all the animals we wanted to see. On our way out of the park we managed to get our lando (bus) stuck so we spent two hours digging it out of the mud. I say we, but I mean all the boys dug while the girls shouted words of encouragement out of the window.
    The next day we visited Spitzkoppe on our way to the Namib desert. Before we reached our camp site we visited the 'desert living museum' where we met the local people who apart from not really wearing anything taught us about their culture. They taught us how they made tools, wepons, how to start a fire and which plays they used for medical purposes. After this we carried on to the camp site, this was in the middle of nowhere where we were surrounded by extremely steep rock like mountains. It reminded us of central Australia and looked pretty similar to the Olga's and Uluru we saw when we were there. Naturally Doug decided to climb the biggest one he could find (which was deemed to be safe by our guide), in his words 'we will be up and down in an hour and a half' so only took a litre of water. When he wasn't back 4 hours later and it was starting to get dark the rest of the group were a little concerned, but he turned up in the end. It turned out the rock was bigger and a slightly more 'tricky' climb than he had anticipated. I took the sensible option and climbed a smaller rock to watch the sunset with a cider in hand.     BOTSWANA

    The day we left the Victoria Falls we crossed the border into Botswana. It was the easiest border crossing by far and only took a few minutes, which was a nice change from the normal. From here we went straight to the Chobe National Park. We decided to opt for a boat safari here for something slightly different, it certainly wasn't a drunken affair like the previous two. It was a four hour boat cruise in the afternoon as the sun was setting where we saw elephants, baboons, hippos, a few mongoose, crocodiles and number of birds all coming to the water to drink. Nothing we hadn't seen before but it was very chilled and was a nice way to get to know our new group.
    We then had a few days on the road before heading to the Okavango Delta, this is the largest land based delta in Africa. This means that the delta or the river supplying the delta (the Zambezi River) never enters the sea or an ocean but rather floods forming the delta mentioned above. Therefore, it can grow or reduce in size depending on the season. On our first day we took a scenic flight over the Delta. Despite Susie's normal motion sickness she agreed to try again. After much planning and sickness tablets she managed to complete the hour flight unscathed!!! The scenery was amazing, allowing us to see all the animals from a better vantage point as well and the delta itself. I think Susie was just happy she wasn't sick!! The following day we took a local canoe along the narrow waterways for a two hour trip to what would be our campsite for the night. Again the canoe ride itself was extremely enjoyable, we were able to sit back, relax and watch the view while out local guide used a bamboo stick to navigate our route. Our campsite was typical bush camping, no shower and just a hole in the ground for a toilet which we used as little as possible. During the afternoon we were taken on a walking safari where we went into the delta to see the plants and any wild life we could come across. After sitting on a bus for hours at a time it was a nice change. We only managed to see some antelope and wildebeest but it was still a good afternoon. That evening we were given a show of local dance and music by our guides. It was .... Interesting, but a good laugh, luckily we weren't picked to get up and dance with them and it was more fun to laugh at the people who were.
    In the morning after another early start and a ride out if the delta we continued on our way towards Namibia.    Läs mer

    ZIMBABWE

    Next we went to the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, where lies the Victoria falls the 'largest' (widest) waterfall in the world. Three quarters of the falls lie in the Zimbabwean side of the border and one quarter on the Zambian side! This is where we were to leave some of our first group that we had traveled with. Some were going home and some were heading down the Johannesburg rather than Cape Town. Therefore, on the first day, some we supported people who wanted to bungee jump, (I wanted to do it myself but as it was extremely touristy here the prices were astronomical so decided to pass). We then had a wander into town and had a look round the local 'culture' which was just shops aimed at tourists. That evening we all went on a sunset cruise to see the wild life in the zambazie river above the Victoria falls. However, given this was out last night together as a group (or the members of the group we liked anyways) and there was unlimited alcohol it turned into a rather drunken affair as everyone tried to get their money's worth. This night was also when we were meant to meet people in our next tour. So when we arrived reasonably drunk at the fairly upmarket restaurant our new guide had picked out for us.... I don't think we made the best first impression!
    The next morning after saying goodbye rather later in the morning that anticipated. We visited the Victoria falls national park. Again here our seasonal planning of this trip was thrown into question. It was the wet season. Not only did this mean we couldn't do the activities we wanted to before arriving. Such as white water rafting and the hells pool (basically a natural swimming pool on the top, at the edge of the water fall), but it also meant there was so much spray from the waterfall that we could hardly see it, except from a distance, oh yea and we also got soaked!! However, it was still a fairly impressive sight!! That night we prepared ourselves for the next leg of our journey which we left for the following day.    Läs mer

    ZAMBIA

    Here we went to the South Luwanga National Park, it was for another game drive. The camp site was nice with the pool over looking a water hole with countless numbers of hippos. We went on a night game drive here, more for the experience and we didn't expect to see many animals!
    We watched the sunset in the pool over the river with the hippos and then went off on our night Safari. We didn't get far, I'm not sure our driver had much experience driving a 4x4 and he loved trying to get through the muddiest parts of the track...it wasn't long before we got stuck. Our driver thought the best way to get out was to rev the engine and spin the wheels continuously until we were grounded!! With no phone reception had to wait half an hour for someone to find us and tow us out. After this slight inconvenience, the rest of the game we managed to see lots of animals, Leopards, hippos, antelope, elephants, zebras as well as some kind of bird that managed to fly inside our pickup flapping around for about 5 minutes. All the girls screams probably scared the rest of the animals away because we didn't see anything else. However, we all enjoyed the experience, getting stuck being the funniest thing.
    We got up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet, only to find a hippo chilling about 10 meters away from us, pretty scary after being told they are the animals that cause the most human deaths in Africa!
    We spent the next day chilling by the pool overlooking the water hole and then we headed towards the Victoria falls!    Läs mer

    MALAWI

    After another long day drive from Zanzibar and a overnight stop we crossed the border into Malawi and arrived at our campsite in Kande beach on the edge of Lake Malawi! We thought we would posh it up somewhat and paid for an upgrade from our tent to a beach front cabin for $10/night each.
    Most of the time here was spent relaxing, playing football on the beach and swimming in the lake. Our guide Wilson made us a alcoholic punch in the first night and we spent it chatting around a camp fire on the beach!
    The next day was another highlight for us on the trip, but was also very eye opening. We took a guided tour around the local village next to our campsite. Initially they tried to sell us stuff which was a bit annoying but when we got to the village they left us well alone. We met all the local children, they were so excited to see us and just wanted to hold our hand and walk with us. As 'payment' they just wanted to borrow our sunglasses, get their photos or videos taken and look back at them on our phone screens which amazed them. The concept of a touch screen meant I had about 6 children around me at one point all trying to play with my phone.
    It was also quite a sad visit, we went to the school where we learnt that usually there was 100 children/teacher. The small school had 1000 pupils in total and very little equipment mostly relying on donations for books, paper and pencils. We were told by our guide to ask before giving the children anything. When one child asked for our 2 litre plastic bottle we didn't know why, but we found out it was just so he could take enough water to school for the day. As the nearest water pump was over half a mile from the school. When we gave it to him a fight broke out between the children all trying to get the bottle off him so they could have it for themselves.
    We visited the local health centre (nothing like ours at home) which services 4000 people. At which there was not a single doctor, but a few health assistants (we think nurses) and if they needed any other healthcare they had to go the the regional health centre over 20km away, obviously none of these people had cars and the ambulances wouldn't normally do anything other than emergencies so they had to somehow get there themselves.
    That night we were cooked a local meal in the village, at the only house with electricity, which cut off after 10 minutes. Then the school children have us a display of African dancing and singing which we had to join in with. They were far better then any of us!!    Läs mer

    Zanzibar

    Still in Tanzania, we then travelled to the island Zanzibar for some sun, sea and relaxation. We spent one day at the beach and we were invited to a sunset cruise in the evening. We thought this would be a very sofisticated event so were a bit shocked when we turned up to find an old wooden boat with around seven locals playing the drums and getting drunk. By the end of the trip we were all joining in with the African singing, dancing and jumping into the sea ( I think the strong drinks they were serving us helped!). Next we visited the main town - Stone Town. This was an old slave market - people would be taken from various countries in Africa and brought to Zanzibar to be shipped on to other countries to work as slaves. We visited the museum and also the chamber the slaves were kept in. There was up to 75 people kept in a tiny room ( see picture) which was so warm - many would die, and if they lasted a few days they were worth more money to sell as it meant they were strong.Läs mer

    TANZANIA - The Serengeti

    The first stop on our tour was the Serengeti in Tanzania. This is a national park best known for its wildlife. It's here we had a two day Safari and it was definitely a highlight. We had a 6 seater car with a removable roof and a very knowledgeable guide. We were lucky enough to see 'the big five' which is the lion, rhino, leopard, elephant and buffalo, along with giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, antelopes, warthogs and hippos. It was amazing - the photos just don't do it justice. The car was half a meter away from a lion at one point, and we had elephants almost as close too. We also camped inside the park, we were told to make sure we hid our shoes as the hyenas would steal them at night if we didnt, and were also warned about going to the toilet at night to look out for lions!     After flying through the night we arrived in Kenya to start a 6 week overland tour from Nairobi to Cape Town. We met the rest of our group of 22 people who all seemed very nice and all age 20-30 which was good. We had a briefing from our guide from the trip, Wilson from Kenya.     Apologies for the delay in our next post, both phone signal and internet are harder to come by when we are in Africa. So our last stop before leaving Thailand was going to visit the kingdom of Siam's first capital. Here there were ..... More temples (because we hadn't seen enough yet). It was very nice, we spent two days here cruzing about on our scooter checking out the temples and the local museum.

    Chiang Mai (part 2)

    The second part of our adventures in Chiang Mai. Firstly we visited the 'temple on the hill' - something everyone raved about. I think we have spent enough time in south east Asia now as to us it was just another temple. The next day we went on a tour to Doi Suthep national park. The morning was spent visiting temples (sigh) and gardens, but the afternoon was a walk through the forest which was much more enjoyable.
    Finally we finished our stay by going to a Thai cooking class. It was very good - we cooked more spring rolls, a curry, soup and the famous Pad Thai.    Läs mer

    Chiang Mai (part 1)

    We thought we would split this into to two parts as we have ended up staying here a good while.
    As the more astute of you may have noticed we are back in Thailand. So a quick flight and long bus from Bangkok and we are here. The nicest city we have seen in Thailand, small streets with gift shops and quite a lot of character. We heard many people compare it to Hoi An in Vietnam. It's nice....just not that nice. We arrived on the weekend and the weekend markets were definitely one of the best we have been to.
    The first day we took a day tour to Chang Rai, a smaller town north to mainly see the golden triangle. Which is a river border separating Thailand, Laos and Myanmar apparently it was one of the top tourist destinations. For us it was a river with land on either side.. however briefly we went over to Laos where we tried some whiskey in which they had put (initially alive) scorpions, snakes, tiger penises and opium ... we tried to get some for you but they were all illegal in Thailand, shame I know you would have wanted to try it! We also went to the famous white temple (I know another one!!) but this one was probably the best one we have seen! Otherwise it was a pretty average trip.
    Next day we went to an elephant sanctuary, it was the best thing to happen in Susie's life (her opinion not mine). I thought it was definitely up there I'll be honest! We got to feed, cuddle and bathe the elephants for a whole day. We were also taught about the horrible lives they had previously led which made us sad so we gave them more food!! It was pricey but when they explained that it coat them 80 USD per day to feed 1 elephant we got over it!    Läs mer

    Next we travelled to Sapa for a couple of days. Here we did a 12km trek to see stunning scenery mainly composed of rice flats. You can see from the pictures they create flat areas on the hills in order to create more space to grow rice. We also visited some communities who live in the countryside.     Halong Bay

    Another night bus and another rubbish nights sleep. I think we are done with them, we possibly have 1 more in north Thailand (hopefully not though).
    Halong bay supposedly another highlight of Vietnam, and we weren't disappointed! The bay is made up of over 1100 islands. We opted for a 3 day 2 night cruise as we felt any shorter and it would be rushed, and we were happy we did. The boat itself was brilliant in comparison to all other cruises we have done so far! The scenery was amazing. Over the two days we went kayaking, to a pearl farm and to another cave. The kayaking and just sitting on the sun deck of the boat with a beer in hand looking around were the most enjoyable parts.
    There were only 2 downsides. The first was that unfortunately people here don't seem to care where they throw their rubbish, meaning most of it ends up in the sea. Sadly it certainly scarred this amazing place. Secondly, karaoke here is like their favourite thing in the world. Being British we don't normally get involved in such things (unless a few drinks are consumed) so we don't normally mind. On a confined relatively small cruise boat hearing Vietnamese people murder every good song was not enjoyable. They may like karaoke but god they are crap at it!    Läs mer

    Phong Nha

    Next we visited the national park and world UNESCO heritage centre Phong Nha. Due to the price of tours we reluctantly decided to hire a motorbike again to visit this but I'm pleased to say we enjoyed it way more this time due to the roads being much quieter.
    The scenery was lovely and we visited a couple of caves. The first cave, paradise cave was very impressive - it was over a kilometer in length. The second cave, dark cave contained a mud bath and was also where we did some zip lining, kayaking and fun water activities.    Läs mer

    Hoi An

    From the previous destinations we seem to have had a bit of a upsurge of fortune, or we just went to a place we really liked. We arrived in Hoi An on another night bus, these are shite in comparison to the South America busses. Bunk bed like seats with bugger all room and no on board toilet. Personally this was a issue for me having the bladder the size of a child, or a prostate problem (not sure which) I was constantly on edge. I needn't have feared though, as the bus consequently stopped what felt like every hour meaning time to sleep was restricted to a minimum.
    Anyway Hoi An, we could have spent an age here. The centre of the town was dedicated to bicycles and pedestrians only, meaning we didn't constantly feel like we were going to die! The town centre itself was very picturesque with little alley ways which were lit up by coloured chinese lanterns at night. We spent a good portion of our time here wandering the streets looking in small shops. We also went shopping!!! Hoi An is also famous for tailors! I was determined to get at least 1 suit. Turns out I got 2 and Susie an outfit as well! It was difficult to decide first where to go and what to pick with countless numbers of fabric and over 400 tailoring shops. In the end it took only 2 days to get measured up and our clothes made from scratch at a fraction of the price it would have cost at home!
    Here we also took bicycles and went around to neighbouring villages such as the vegetable village which was pretty much a giant vegetable patch for a village green. Also the pottery village where they made all sorts of ornaments out of pottery, and Susie made a rather rubbish jug (I think it was a jug anyways?)
    Lastly we went on a tour to the coconut islands where we were taken around in a bamboo boat, which was surprisingly good fun. After which we did a Vietnamese cooking class. This was also a highlight for us. Mainly because there was food, and a lot of it. It also tasted amazing so Susie has volunteered to cook you all some traditional Vietnamese food when we get back. Me being a man/child I like to burn things, so the chef let me flambé our rice pancakes. So in summary Hoi An - a definite highlight of our Vietnam road trip so far!!    Läs mer

    Da lat and Nha trang

    I have combined two places we visited next for reasons that will become clear. We decided to go to Da Lat mainly to do a 'secret tour' we had read about. We wanted to do this tour on Chinese New Years Day so decided to email beforehand to check that would be okay. 'Yes, no bother' was the reply. However when we got there we were told of course the tour would not be running as everything shuts down for New Years! So basically we had a day in Da Lat drinking coffee and visiting the only attraction that was open which was the flower gardens.
    We moved on the next day, it was then that we realised that Chinese New Year does not last for one day, but 10 days! And during this time most tourist attractions shut down, the rest are double the price. Buses were packed and so expensive! We visited Nha Trang next, a popular beach resort. Again, everything we tried to do was closed, and it rained so the beach was a no go. We managed to visit some mud baths which passed the time.
    So by the end of this week we were pretty fed up with Chinese New Year and there was still another 3 days to go!    Läs mer

    Ho Chi Minh

    Next we crossed the border into Vietnam, our first stop was Ho Chi Minh or Saigon. With more people in this city than the whole of Cambodia it was a bit of a shock going back to the urban life style and placing your life in danger every time you tried to cross a road! Apparently it's best to close you eyes and just walk, at least that way you don't see the near misses.
    We went on 2 day trips from here. One to the Mekong delta which is meant to be amazing... we were both underwhelmed. Maybe we should have gone for a 2 day tour which a lot of people were doing. We felt it was more aimed at selling us things rather than showing us the delta. The best part was getting a boat ride through the small canals of the delta which had some nice scenery.
    We also went to the Cu Chi tunnels which were used in the French/American Vietnamese war. We both found these amazing. Three floors of underground tunnels 3, 7 and 12-15 meters underground. With places for people to live and in total all the tunnels combined were over 200km in length. We got to go down into the first floor. It was hot sweaty and small, not something I would want to live in for years at a time.
    On the last day we wandered around the city itself looking at cathedrals etc, we also went to the museum dedicated to the Vietnamese war. Again apparently we are uneducated on the topic but I'm fairly sure this was a one sided view if things. However there was a lot we hadn't really appreciated before. In particular that the wars within Vietnam had lasted about 30 years non stop which included the French colonial war and the American wars which had been back to back. There is a particular anti American feel about the place. On the bright side, there are baguettes and crepes on every street corner to eat!! Susie was happy!    Läs mer

    Phnom Phen

    After Krattie we returned to Phnom Phen. In total we spent about 2 days. We did the usual walk around the city seeing the classic independence monuments and royal palace etc. The most interesting and depressing thing we did was go to both the S1 and killing field museums. I was aware before coming to Cambodia about a civil war about 30 years ago, apparently we were both completely ignorant to the extent of the genocide that had took place during and after the civil war, after the Vietnamese war. I won't go into too much detail with the risk of it sounding like a history lesson and many of the things we saw we didn't feel right taking pictures as we our guide lived through this and had lost half of her family as a result.
    Long story short the S1 museum had been turned into a concentration camp where any person deemed to have an education was tortured usually until death because they were possibly US or Russian spies. If they didn't die there they would be transported to a 'new home' (the killing fields) where they were killed. As guns were too expensive it was usually by spade/pick axe/rough leaf or wood edge. In total 3 million people died in 5 years. Two million actively killed and another million be starvation or similar. This was over a quarter of the entire population of Cambodia.
    Very educational but not the nicest place to go. The pictures show just some of the remains they have found from the killing fields, the prison and one of the 'rooms' the victims slept in.    Läs mer

    Next stop was Krattie. The reason we came here was to see one of the worlds only fresh water dolphins. We went out to the river on a boat to see them. It was very good but I'm afraid trying to photograph them proved difficult, but you can just about see them in the picture so you get the idea.
    In the afternoon we went across to a little island 5 minutes away called Koh Trong and rented bikes so we could cycle around. We really enjoyed being away from the town and the tuk tuks and scooters. It was great to see some countryside again!    Läs mer

    Battambang

    Next we spent a couple of days at Battambang. The first day we hired a Tuk Tuk and visited the prize attraction - the bamboo train. This is effectively sheets of bamboo that are used in the town to transport rice on a railway track. However due to the popularity of this for tourists, the locals found it hard to find time to transport the rice. Therefore a month before now they made a new bamboo train outside the town purely for tourists. This made the experience very strange as it felt like there was no real concept. We arrived, were quickly ushered onto the VIP seats ( I don't know why?) and enjoyed a 10 minute journey before turning back and heading home. Very surreal!
    Next we visited the bat caves and enjoyed a lovely sunset where at the end the bats started to fly out for the night. Apparently millions fly out over the course of an hour, we only stayed for 15 minutes or so but it was pretty cool! There was also yet another temple on the top of the hill to visit.
    The next day we visited a school which was set up to help children living in poor conditions. It was amazing to see all the talented artists and we watched a show to see all of their amazing skills, from hula hooping to dancing.    Läs mer

    CAMBODIA - Siem Reap

    From Bangkok we headed into Cambodia for a whistle stop tour. First stop is Seim Reap, home to the famous Angkor Wat, the largest religious building in the world and according to Cambodia is the 7th wonder of the world, but we have heard that an awful lot on our travels. When we arrived it was amazingly impressive having been built nearly 1000 years ago! Unfortunately photos struggle to do it justice.
    There are many temples around Siem Reap. So one day was dedicated to Angkor Wat, and the next day to the others. Including one that was used to film the new Tomb Raider. Again even these small temples were amazing and we struggled to see how these people so long ago managed to build them. It was fair to say though at the end of day 2 we were templed out!
    Think we will take a break from temples for now!!    Läs mer

    Bangkok

    Next we spent a couple of days in Bangkok which is the backpackers capital of the world. There was lots of night markets and bars to visit. The first night doug tried one of the local delicacies - a scorpion! It wasn't one of his favourite dishes.
    During the first day we visited various temples and the famous grand palace which was very popular.
    The second day we visited the floating markets. These were made as many people used to travel to work via the river in boats, so many locals would sell them things on the way past. Now it's just a tourist attraction but was very cool.    Läs mer

    Ko Phangan and Ko Tao

    Our next stop was two islands that lie to the east of Thailand. The first was Ko Phangan which is famous for its full moon parties. Luckily me and doug managed to time it just right so that we missed the full moon party - we both agreed we are just too old for that kind of nonsense. Instead we explored the various beaches around the island. We had the 'smart' idea to hire a scooter to drive ourselves around. I have to admit I hated every minute of it - there isn't any set rules on driving on the roads, it's basically just push and shove to get out of junctions, so it wasnt the most enjoyable day. The next day we got a traditional Thai massage which was one of the most painful activities we have done on our travels - Doug even had to ask the lady to stop at one point.
    Next we travelled to Ko Tao where Doug did a days diving experience (I chose just to stick with snorkelling for now). He really enjoyed it and is considering doing his Padi now.    Läs mer
