    Only 4 days before we leave for Yogyakarta. Time to start packing that suitcase but only put in as much as you can carry!

    Journey to Yogya

    We have arrived at Hotel Novatel in Yogya. There were lots of opportunities for photos along the way.

    First Impressions

    We asked some of the girls for some first impressions of our trip so far...
    Ailish - very different to Bali in a good way
    Charlotte - hotel is good, likes the fish tank, pool area looks good
    Yu Shin - we’ve had way too much food
    Charlie - looking really different with lots of green spaces
    Abbey - seeing the Volcanos above the cloud was great

    Dinner tonight was a smorgasbord of lots of interesting options.

    Noodles, fried rice, cereals, pastries, pancakes, toast with variety of toppings including peanut butter, juices, fish, chicken, gado gado and so much more plus soft serve icecream presumably to go with the pancakes!Read more

    Visit to a Mosque

    The Kauman Great Mosque was closed but our guide Rifa told us the Yogyakarta mosques are a mixture of Islam, Buddhist and Christian design and that all Indonesians are taught to accept the different religions.

    The Sultan's Palace (Kraton)

    Here we saw where the Sultan lives with his wife and 5 daughters. And had a photo taken in front of it. Then through another area there were some ladies and then men, practicing their dancing. While we were watching some school children approached us and asked if they could practice their English! Everyone became involved and there was lots of laughter.

    Then we went through the museum of the ninth and beloved Sultan.

    Here are Yu-Shin's thoughts on the Palace written in Indonesian, then in English...
    Di Keraton Sultan, ada dua museum. Banyak artefak bisa dilihat dari Sultan IX, Sultan yang paling berkuasa. Keraton itu terbangun pada tahun 1755 ada agung dan indah sekali. Pada jam sebelas, ada tarian. Penari langkah dengan anggun. Selalu ada banyak orang yang ingin memotret dengan kami.

    (At the Sultans palace, there are two museums. There are many artifacts from the ninth Sultan who was the most powerful. The Kraton was built in 1755 and is very grand and beautiful. At 11 o’clock, there was dancing. The dancers move gracefully. There is always many people who want to take a photo with us.)    Read more

    Taman Sari

    After a short walk from the restaurant we arrived at Taman Sari, the site of a former royal garden of the Sultanate within the grounds of the Kraton. It was a bathing area for the Sultan's wives with change rooms and separate pools for the main wife and the other wives. It was under development and so had no water in the pools but we could imagine how it was back in 1758 when it was built.Read more

    Sumur Bawah Tanah (Sunken Well)

    To get to this underground mosque we walked down a narrow set of stairs to a gated building. Through the gate we walked down some ramps to get to an amazing area of 2 different circular tunnels built round a staircase in the middle. Apparently the 'choir' of the mosque would stand on the stairs with good acoustics to reach the Imam above and the people below.

    A Visit to the Sultan's Graves

    This sounds like a fairly simple activity until we find that they bury the Sultans in the mountains so it means first about an hours drive. Then a climb of over 400 steps upwards. Then we needed to change into Javanese style dress before we could go with our guide to visit the graves. More steps to get to the grave (not easy in our ankle length tight Javanese dresses!) of the 1st Sultan. Here we entered a small hut built around the grave and were invited to kneel next to the grave and take 7 breaths over a crack in the rocks to smell the fragrance from the grave! This is believed to bring good luck.

    Then we visited the 9th Sultan's grave.

    Erika - It was interesting to learn how the Sultans are buried
    Ingrid - the first Sultan is very important and therefore got the top spot in the graveyard
    Maeve - the fragrance we could smell near the grave came from the ground
    Meg - the 9th Sultan had many children.

    Batik Lesson

    From the graveyard we went to a place nearby to learn about Batik. We sat outside under cover and were shown how to apply hot wax to the cotton material using little pipes. Then we were each given a piece of material to do our own. A pattern had been drawn on the material already for us to follow. Once completed to our batik teacher's satisfaction the the pieces of material were dipped into buckets of dye. We couldn't wait for ours to dry so our guide Rifa has taken them home to dry for us.

    Steph - it was interesting to watch the batik teachers doing the waxing step. They were so fast compared to me and didn't get any blobs of wax anywhere.
    Ripley - the coloring step was interesting and then we saw some of the lovely materials they make with a lot of detail which take a month to make.    Read more

    Javanese Dancing Lesson

    We headed off to a place where we would have a lesson on Javanese dancing. The teacher and her helper started with simple movements and then kept adding the next bit for an hour or so. And near the end scarves were added into the dance. The girls did so well concentrating for so long and following along.Read more

    Gamelan Playing

    After the dance lesson we had an hour long lesson of playing the Gamelan instruments. We had a special teacher - a lecturer from a local Music University (there are over 100 universities in Yogya!). The girls picked up what was being asked of them very quickly and got turns at all the different instruments.Read more

    Wayang Kulit Performance

    Last night we went out to dinner and then to the Wayang Kulit Performance. Wayang Kulit is a very famous and important puppet show where you can either watch the side where the man controlling the puppets sits and uses colorful puppets or you watch from the other side and see a shadow puppet show. Or you can walk back and forth which is what we did.

    The puppeteer was supported by 4 ladies singing and a gamelan orchestra but he does the story including singing and uses his foot to crash the cymbals. We saw him wipe the sweat from his face several times so it must be hard work!    Read more

    Market Food Shopping

    We headed off early to the market to buy food for our cooking class. Rifa and her driver took us to a market that has only been open about a year and apparently we were the first westerners to visit because the security made a big fuss of us and insisted on a group photo before we went into the market and we had 2 guards accompany us.

    The girls were split into 2 groups and each person had an item they had to bargain for (with a bit of help from the lady who was taking the cooking class and Ibu Turnley, Bu Hinchey and Rifa). Ingredients included vegetables and spices. The girls were amazingly brave and entered into the spirit of market shopping.    Read more

    Cooking Class

    After buying the food needed we went to Ibu Ning's cookery school. We made Nasi Goreng (fried rice), perkedal (potato fritters), capcay (mixed vegie dish), tempe goreng (soy bean product). Then we sat down to eat our lunch - delicious.Read more

    Rice Paddys

    Across from the cooking school and next to it were some rice paddys with people working. Tahnee and Ingrid wanted to offer the man nearby some of our food so they waded out a path he had created by cutting out some rice to offer him some food which he took after our driver explained what they were doing. It looked like he enjoyed what they gave him.Read more

    Parangtritis Beach

    The beach was about an hour’s drive south. The beach consists of black volcanic stones.

    No swimming here as it is a very dangerous area of ocean and if you were to wear green beware!

    Meg, Tahnee and Maeve - Nyi roro kidul was a princess who lived on a beach, who loved the colour green. She loved the colour green so much that when she died whoever wears green at the beach where she lived, would be taken by Nyi roro kidul. It is believed that she had a beautiful kingdom underwater. Nyi roro kidul was a very ugly princess and she wanted to be beautiful, so she decides to visit the South beach to see a spirit to make her beautiful. She kept the spirit and the beach. People give offerings to the princess and hold ceremonies at the beach for her.

    There was a group from an Islamic school there who were fascinated by the girls and wanted a picture.

    Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan

    Some explanation from the students...

    Year 9 - Ramayana ballet. Love story between Ramayana and Sita, same as Romeo and Juliet. Competition for Sita, Rama wins. Finally they got married but the very bad king Ranwana wanted to take Sita away from Rama. Rama friends help get Sita from Ranwana. The monkey kingdom and humans help each other. Sita is very beautiful.

    Year 10s - Our favourite part was when Hanuman threw the fire and burnt down the palace. We found that the ‘good’ characters were more gentle and slow with their movements while the ‘bad’ characters were aggressive and moved very fast. The Gamelan brought the performance to life!    Read more

    Becak ride to Malioboro St Market

    After Bu Hinchey summoned 15 becaks (mostly powered by foot but some motorized) and drivers, we set off for the market. What an experience in the busy traffic! The drivers are amazing.

    At the market the girls bought bags for themselves and souvenirs for others. Then back to the hotel via becak for lunch. We each paid our driver 100000 rupia for our ride there and back (~$10).Read more
