  • USA Tour - Boston/Portland

    17 listopada 2018, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Last day in Boston today before my trip up to Portland, Maine later in the day. Today is when I started this travel blog, I also made a few FaceTime calls home to let people know I’m still alive and well. I was going to Portland via a greyhound coach which I was looking forward to - except they’re not Grey like in the movies 😭😭😂😂 it was still a comfortable journey which took about 3 hours. Unfortunately it was so dark I couldn’t see much but I managed to catch up on some episodes of ‘Norsemen’ which my dad recommended to me before I left.

I stepped off the bus in Portland and immediately felt like this was a friendly place - the town reminds me of the one in the film ‘deck the halls’ there was snow everywhere and in some places around 7 inches deep. I walked all the way up congress street which took me pretty much direct to my hostel which is brilliant, more like a house than a hostel it’s in a brilliant location too!

After checking in I made friends with two guys in my room - 1 guy called Bryan from Tennessee who is up here on work (he owns a weed farm) and he’s ex Air Force. There was also a guy called Miguel who was also in the forces and me and him ended up going for a few drinks around Portland.

Brilliant night, Miguel was cool and he gave me some tips on where to go when I get to Texas as he’s from there. We ended up in a bar called Rosie’s which was a proper bar. Line dancing, country and western music and fries served in a basket!

    Great night!

    18 listopada 2018, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 1 °C

Decided to just walk around the town today - Portland is only a small place, so it’s very easy to get around. I ended up around the harbour area today, which was so quiet as it’s all pretty much closed for the season, including a lot of restaurants. Eventually came across a bar called ‘Ri Ra’ which is an Irish bar that was actually quiet good. I drank miller lite, and watched the NFL like a local. I also got speaking to a couple from Boston who where up here on vacation for a few days. Real cool, super nice people who bought me a few drinks and also recommended other places to go in Boston if I ever go back (I go back in a few days 😂😂)

After all the beer was drunk I needed another walk around the town. I stumbled across a place called ‘duckfat’ which was awesome - ended up getting a huge plate of poutine ❤️❤️

Today I braved the cold weather and did the back cove trail which is around 3.5 miles long around ‘Back Cove’

Took me a while to do as the floor is covered in snow and I’m wearing Nike 270’s which isn’t ideal! However, it was a great walk which takes you into the north and west of the city for you to walk around and discover!

Walking my way back towards my hostel I stopped off and got the best steak sandwich I’ve ever had. Currently in Starbucks, stealing their WiFi to update this blog, drink some ice tea and watch the world go by.

It’s my last day here in Portland as I’m off back to Boston tomorrow - my original plan of carrying up further north to bar harbour was brought to an abrupt halt as each local I spoke to highly suggested I didn’t as I don’t have the correct clothing and it won’t be that pretty up there at the moment. So I am making my way back to Boston and I’ll basically see where ever is cheapest to go next and go there. I may treat myself to a beer or two tonight though...

So I came back to Boston today after a few days up in Portland. The plan was to carry up further north but after a few locals advised against it and seeing on the news that a storm was coming in I made the decision to come back to Boston for a few nights, as from here it’s quite easy to get around!

However before I left for Boston I had another walk around Portland, and went to a place called ‘Beckys’ out on the waterfront that a few people had told me to try. It’s open from 4am to 9pm 7 days a week! Got my self a breakfast there and ended up talking to a few locals there, one recommended I make my way to New Haven in Connecticut, so I may look into that. What I have noticed a lot up in New England is that most people think Liverpool is in Ireland....

Had my first travel incident today too - I left all my ID and credit cards etc at my hostel when I checked out. Luckily I got some WiFi and I had an email off the hostel letting me know they had them otherwise i wouldn’t of noticed till I’d of left Portland which would of been too late!!! Coincidentally it’s the first time I’ve left a room without patting my head - I always check I have everything and if I do I pat my head like a postman’s knock so I know I’ve checked... so I’ll be sure to pat my head every time I leave a room now....

Came back to Boston for a quick overnight stop before I have to endure an 11 hour coach journey to Washington.... and I had to pay $80 for the privilege as I will be travelling on thanksgiving. However I also planned my trip up to meeting Ted in New York! Ted is one of my best friends older brother who has lived in NYC for a few years and was kind enough to let me crash in his for a few days, which is awesome of him and his wife! So I am off to Washington, Philadelphia, Atlantic city then on to New York for a few days! I haven’t planned any further than that so we’ll see how it goes

Currently staying in found hostel.... which is basically a hotel room with 4 beds. It’s not got the vibe of a hostel but it’s great if you want a comfy bed and a quiet room.

Just had a little walk round the downtown area today got a few beers and the worlds biggest sandwich from a place Called al’s - it was 16inches long..... and I ate the lot!!!

Also on my way back to my hostel today walking through Boston Common and they had the ice skate rink out which was awesome!

  • USA Tour - Washington (Thanksgiving)

    22 listopada 2018, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ 🌙 -2 °C

Literally just got set up in my hostel in Washington after an 11 hour coach journey from Boston. My legs are in agony, I’m also pretty certain I have DVT!

Anyway, left Boston this morning at 9:30am and on my walk to the station the entire place was like a ghost town. Didn’t see a single person. I was quick to get away from my room as I met the other person staying in my dorm for the first time and she was an ‘energy healer and cleanser’ she visits sacred locations around the USA and helps brings ‘positive energy’ to those locations.... I couldn’t leave quick enough.

The journey here wasn’t pretty uneventful, I watched a series on Netflix called ‘conspiracy’ which kept me entertained the entire way. Did manage a glimpse of Philadelphia and NYC on my journey though.

Got off at Washington union station and the idea was to walk to the hostel as it was only a 25 minute walk or so but... Jesus some weirdos around there. From the time leaving the coach to getting outside I was approached by 6 randomers just talking gibberish. Was a bit strange, not so much scary but definitely strange. Also when I got outside the place was dead - everyone is at home for thanksgiving, so I thought it would be best just to get an Uber to the hostel. First time I’ve gone for a room as big as 10 so we’ll see how that gets on.

I guess I’ll just chill in the hostel tonight as everywhere is closed for the night - but tomorrow I am off exploring.... an already explored city!

First full day in Washington today so decided to go out and check the landmarks out. DC is bigger than what I thought... started off at the Whitehouse, completely underwhelming, couldn’t get anywhere near it really and it’s not even That big. Then I moved onto the Washington monument but that was closed for repairs. Ended up by the WW2 memorial which was actually pretty good, then I walked down to the Lincoln memorial which as memorials go is pretty fucking good. A lot bigger than what I expected even though it looked big in planet of the apes and team America. Also managed to see the Vietnam war memorial, the Korean War memorial, Martin Luther King JR memorial, Franklin Roosevelt Memorial, DC War Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, The Pentagon (couldn’t get that close to it though unfortunately - TEAM SNOWDEN) Arlington Cemetery, JF Kennedy gravesite, The Tomb of the forgotten soldier and then my favourite... the US Marine Corps memorial. It was a looooong day and many many miles where walked. But it was a great day that I really enjoyed, I think it helped that it was relatively quiet as people where still celebrating thanksgiving. Picked up a McDonald’s on the way back cause that’s a local thing to do... Czytaj więcej

    24 listopada 2018, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

Much more relaxed day today, woke up at 10am to watch the Liverpool v Watford game (we won 3-0) after that I went to check out some museums - the African American history museum and the American history museum. Both are well worth a visit and they’re both huuuuge! But the time I had done those 2 it was almost 5pm at which time most of the museums close so I decided to go get a drink by the capital one arena as I had NBA tickets for the Washington Wizards later on. Came across an Irish bar by the stadium. It was shit but it was better than nothing and after a 25 minute walk in the pouring rain anything was better than nothing. Had a few beers then went over to the area to watch my first NBA game.

    Verdict; it’s not for me

From being charged almost $15 for a beer to $15 for a hot dog and some fries to watching a game which stopped every few minutes the overall experience just wasn’t for me. The game didn’t get good till the final 2 quarters and even then it was pedestrian at best in terms of pace of the game. However I would recommend it if you’re ever in the states, it’s a different experience from any football or rugby game I’ve ever been to.

Would recommend!!! Also did the Native American history museum which was cool, a real eye opener as I didn’t realise how badly they where treated. After that I went to Capitol Hill which is much better than the Whitehouse. Unfortunately with it being a Sunday I couldn’t go in but it looked brilliant at night. Then I was white trailer trash and went to hooters for some food. Don’t care what anyone says if you want a few beers, watch some sports and have good food there isn’t much better places!!! Got the coach from Washington to Philadelphia today - with the travel times there wasn’t much done today. However the hostel I am staying in is unbelievable, almost certainly up there with the best! Have an entire deluxe 6 room to myself at the moment hahahahaha. It’s called apple hostels on bank street which is near the old town. Down a dodgy alley but location wise it can’t be bettered I don’t think! The hostel floors are also rated on the rocky films - I’m on floor 4 so I have the best rocky film by far (fight me if you disagree) Czytaj więcej

    27 listopada 2018, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Had a quick trip round the south side of the city today, ended up in this cool little bar which had taco Tuesday on which was immense $1:50 per taco! The south side of Philly was quite cool really, few areas I wouldn’t want to live but every city has that. One thing I have noticed about Philly and Washington is the amount of homelessness, I thought it was pretty bad back home but these 2 cities kind of opened my eyes a little bit.

What trip to Philly is complete without a Philly Cheesesteak. I went to a place called sonny’s which is supposed to be the best place for it... it was fantastic if not messy. Washed it all down with a large root beer. Can’t get anymore local than that!

    28 listopada 2018, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

So today I went on a huge tour of the city. Started out by visiting the first Bank of America, moving onto Benjamin Franklin’s home. I also went to see independence hall, the liberty bell and the constitution museum.

After I did all the history stuff I went to paddy’s bar which if you’ve seen ‘it’s always sunny in Philadelphia’ this is the bar it’s based on. Looks nothing like the programme however. I also got talking to the barmaid who works there who told me to get a Philly taco - which is a cheesesteak hoagie wrapped in a slice of pizza.... sounds awesome however I skipped it as I didn’t want to die of a heart attack.

I also had a venture though Chinatown which was cool, although I would say Boston’s Chinatown was slightly better. But just off Chinatown is a place clued reading food market which takes up like 2 city blocks. All kinds of food you imagine, I went for a jambalaya as I’d never had one before.... unreal.

After stuffing my face I walked to the other side of town to the museum of art - which is where the iconic scene in rocky is filmed where he climbs the steps... rocky climbed those steps so, so did I!! Also FaceTimed my brother from the top as he’s a huge rocky fan!

I managed to find a pub with the Liverpool game on only managed to grab the second half. Poor performance all round really. But a guy came into the pub after the game had finished with a very British accent. We ended up talking and his name was sandy from Paddington in London, he works over here and has done for 15 years! Turns out he’s a spurs fan so he was happy. After about 30 mins or so another guy walks in who sits next to us at the bar, I can’t remember his name but he was a Russian living in Texas in Philadelphia for work. We all spent about 3 hours in the pub drinking before we all had to go our separate ways - it was a brilliant night though!

Bed early tonight as I am up to get to Atlantic City in the morning...

Travelled to Atlantic City today from Philadelphia via greyhound. Must of been the worlds oldest coaches as it was a piece of shit. Getting off the coach at Atlantic bus station was also an experience.... not a great one either hahaaha. The hostel I’m staying in is quite cool, more of a house... well technically it is the owner actually lives here. It’s not the most up to date in the world but it’s in a cool location. I managed a quick walk up and down Atlantic Avenue and then at night I went gambling in Bally’s and Caesar’s casino - walked out $20 up so that’s always a bonus. The casinos are huge, even bigger as it’s the end of the season and there’s basically no one around.... it’s genuinely like a ghost town!

Got back to the hostel and ended up chatting to Alex who’s a guy in my room till about 3am - he’s from Philadelphia and just got back from a tour of Peru which sounded quite cool

Still think I’ll go to south east Asia

First full day in Atlantic City today and all I can say is

‘It would be better in high season’

There’s literally no one about it’s so strange.

I took a walk down to the lighthouse today which is supposed to be famous somehow, not sure why. It was also in a pretty run down part of town but it didn’t give me a chance to walk the entire length of the broadwalk... which again would be better in high season as everything was closed and there was no one about. I managed to take a few pictures down at the beach which was quite nice. Also did a tour today of the hard rock casino and Tropicana casino - came out even overall so that was cool after a few hours gambling. I also went to a place called White House Subs - which is famous for their submarine sandwiches. I didn’t ask how big they where but I would say close to 20 inches, they where definitely much bigger than the 16inch sandwich in Boston!! It was awesome, only managed to eat half of it but they wrapped the rest up for me to take away and even gave me a small tub of meatballs as they liked my accent and I did quite well for a brit hahahah

Did a little tour of the outlet village they have here too, it’s a joke how cheap some stuff is here - YSL T shirts for $20 - Ralph Lauren t shirts for $15 - crazy!!

  • USA Tour - New York

    2 grudnia 2018, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

Came to NYC after a coach trip from Atlantic City. Managed to watch the first half of the derby but missed the second half cause the WiFi on the coach was a joke!!!

Anyway, stepped off the coach on W42nd street - right next to Broadway, 5th Avenue and Times Square. Unreal. The place is so alive and busy it’s insane! I was stayed in the Hilton on Times Square, I go into check in and the guy behind the counter wanted confirmation that I had a booking... turns out I was in the wrong Hilton.... bad divvy me. My hotel was just on the next block. Checked in and literally dived on the bed! Not had a bed as nice in 3 weeks it was amazing! Having my own shower and toilet was also boss.

I went for a walk at night as I wanted to experience NYC at night, I made my way into Times Square which is unreal, so busy, so many lights, performers, and weirdos alike.

I then made my way down to radio city hall which was awesome, such a cool place, there was also Christmas decorations up all over the place it looked awesome! Just the next block over was the Rockefeller centre which I had to visit! The Home Alone tree and the ice skating rink - it was incredible but also rammed. Genuinely made up I got to see it, the actual Rockefeller tower is also cool as fuck!

After all the walking I needed a bevvy. I walked down past Saks 5th Avenue past the New York Public library to ‘Carraghers Bar’ it had to be done.

Ended up there till around 12:30 trying different beers, there was a local beer called ‘montauk’ which is brewed on Long Island and it was a nice little beer. Got talking to a barman there called Dave who was sound he was from Ireland and had been living in NYC for 8 years. After the bar had closed I made my way to Madison Square Garden just to see it. It was awesome!

    3 grudnia 2018, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

So after my first real good night sleep in a few weeks I was feeling alive and refreshed to tackle NYC! As I was meeting up with Ted today to stay with him for a few nights in Brooklyn I decided I would go up to Central Park and walk around for a bit before making my way down 5th Avenue.

Central Park is huge, it’s even bigger when you’re carrying your backpack around with you!! The park is awesome though and there so much going on in there I bet it’s amazing in the summer!

After my jaunt around the park I walked down 5th Avenue past Tiffany’s, Trump Tower and Saks! There were people outside trump tower protesting which was cool although no one seemed to be taking much notice of them!

Found s good little Irish pub whilst I waited for Ted to let me no where to meet up with him, ended up talking to the bar staff there about my travels and they gave me a free pint which was much obliged even if it was bud light!

Ted messaged me to let me know to meet him at Washington Square at 5pm - I checked my map and it was the other side of Manhattan!!! A 40 minute walk or a 10 minute tube ride... I chose to walk. I think walking is almost certainly the best way to see a city, and it was well worth the walk even if I was basically a puddle of sweat when I met Ted. It was nice to see a familiar face especially in a city as big and loud as NYC. He took me on the subway from Washington Square to uttica Avenue in Brooklyn to his. His house massive and full of character! I met his wife juliett who is lovely and was so welcoming when I arrived. I also met little Seamus again, kid is s legend! Ted took us all out for a Mexican which was cool - best taco I ever had!

We all went back the house and me and we ended up watching a film on Netflix on Ted projector - unreal. Eventually retired to bed ready for a big day again in the big apple!

I took the subway with Ted today into New York from Brooklyn as I wasn’t sure where to go, he suggested getting off with him by the Chrysler Building as I can work my way downtown from there. He then took me to Grand Central Station - it was insane and much bigger than I expected but from the outside it looks small. It was cool being in such an iconic place but people where just going about their day. There was also 2 markets in there which I didn’t expect to see at all so that was a nice added surprise!

After I left Ted I walked across town then to the Rockefeller centre - I had to go do ‘top of the rock’ it’s something I’d always wanted to do and it didn’t disappoint! But before I went up I walked around the nbc studios and all the stores inside which was quite Novel. I bought my ticket for top of the rock and I had an hour to kill so I did what anyone else would do.... I went for a bevvy. Found a place called Sean’s which was just around the corner and I had one of their own brews which wasn’t bad - although what they call a pilsner and what I think A pilsner is are completely different!

After my drink I make my way back to the Rockefeller centre to go up to the observation deck - UN FUCKING REAL! Manhattan looks amazing from up here (it helped that it was such a clear day) I had perfect views over Central Park and downtown Manhattan. It was worth the $40 to go up. I’d pay it again in a heartbeat. Probably my second favourite thing I did in NYC after seeing the Rockefeller tree!

My dad told me I had to send him a photo of the Flatiron Building so I had to trek to there from the Rockefeller centre - I could of just got the subway but I do prefer to walk! I actually liked the flatiron district it was a lot less hassle and much quieter than anywhere else in NYC, some of the architecture was quite cool too!

I made my way to Wall Street after visiting the flatiron district as it wasn’t too far away - literally fuck all there but I suppose I can say I’ve seen it.

I visited the WTC memorial after Wall Street. It was really sad but I think they’ve done an amazing job with the memorial and the waterfalls are a nice touch to the whole thing. The new trade centre is an awesome building right next to the old site which pierces the sky.

I visited Staten Island after here but my phone died so I couldn’t take any photos Hahahahaha. Managed to find my way back to Brooklyn after walking the entire length and breadth of the city

Woke up this morning feeling like an old man Hahahahaha I was shattered and my legs ached. However this was my last day in NYC so I wasn’t going to waste it! Shaun, Emma, Kev, Ted and Juliet all said I had to do the walk over the Brooklyn bridge into Manhattan. All I can say is awesome. It’s basically every photo or movie you’ve seen - that’s the view. I didn’t care it was cold. It was awesome.

I went back on the ferry to Staten Island today so I could get some photos of the Statue of Liberty and the view of Manhattan. Staten Island is shit there’s not much there but it’s worth a walk around like.

I met up with a loooong time friend today - we’ve known each other for around 20 years! So Carla messaged me on Instagram letting me know she was in NYC for the night. So we arranged to meet up for a beer or two.... turned into about 50.

We met up around 5pm and we went for some food. She recommended this place called ‘Ellen’s stardust diner’ it’s supposed to be famous but I’d Never heard it Hahahahaha. The queue to this place was around for block so we waited inline for around 35 minutes before a table became available.

I’ll be honest I wasn’t a fan of it - but I liked the concept. All the waiters and waitresses sing and dance on tables etc, but they weren’t that good Hahahahaha. The food was alright though. Anyway we’re sitting there taking the piss out the place and a guy turns up behind me with a camera and a microphone asking me can he interview me about our experience at the restaurant..... fuck me nearly died. Carla is crying laughing whilst I’m there lying to this guy about how amazing this place was.... never felt more awkward in my life. We left not long after, crying laughing

After there we went to the Rockefeller tree and then watched the light show at Saks. We then went the Christmas markets on Bryant park and got a beer, but it was freezing so we only stayed for the one then I took her to Carraghers Bar as she didn’t know it was there! We was in there from about 8pm to 1am just drinking and catching up which was cool - Carla got smashed was hilarious. I walked Carla back to her hotel by Times Square which was about 15 blocks away and she kept stopping and dancing and humming in the street. A walk which should of taken maybe 20 mins ended up taking closer to 1 hour. I dropped Carla off at the hotel and went to get the subway back to Brooklyn. Every train was cancelled after I had been waiting there for an hour I decided to just get an Uber back. Fuming. But over all a brilliant day!
