    27.–31. okt. 2024, Surinam ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Flew from Georgetown and the 1145am flight took off at 1115, 30 min early, right after they boarded us. There was no announcement as to being early. I guess all passengers were there.

Suriname claims to be the most forested country in the world - 93% forested.
They speak Dutch here but drive on the brittish side. They are not open to US$ or credit cards. My taxi took me to an ATM for cash. The airport is 45km from the city.
Stayed at the Jacana resort. The hotel was charging 5% extra for CC.
There are very few white people here. A lot fewer than South Africa.
I took a taxi downtown and walked around the wooden buildings in old Paramaribo. In order to go inside the cathedral I had to buy a scarf to cover up. It's very hot and humid.

PS. They don't use garbage cans here. They put their garbage bags in a medal basket on a poll off the ground

  • French Guyana St-Laurent-du-Maroni

    28. oktober 2024, Surinam ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Took an all-day tour from Paramaribo. This is the place made famous in the movie Papillon. Peter, the other passenger, was visiting from the Netherlands, and he understood the local language. Gilbert was our driver from All Suriname Tours. I paid extra to cover for the 4 people min. We drove to Albina and took the motor canoe across the river to French Guyane. Saint-Laurence-du-Maroni was a Pinal colonial that housed 70,000 prisoners. Any prisoners with over 2 year sentence they were brought here from France. The boat came twice a year. Once here, 99% chance you never made it back. Prisoners were making bricks or were taken by train to sugar plantations to work. They built all the buildings in the city. A few prisoners that had repeated offenses were taken to Davils Island. Once you finish your sentence, you had no money, so you stayed in the "free" part of the prison and worked for money. Later on, they brought female prisoners who stayed with the nuns. Officers, guards, and free prisoners were "buying " them. Some got married to free prisoners and were getting housing.
Charming citi today with a Hotel-de-ville and Palais-de-Justice

For desert, we had chocolate truffles with huckleberry sorbet and granny smith sauce.Les mer

  • Prague day 2

    31. oktober 2024, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We bought hop on hop off bus tickets to get around the city. They started at the main train station. The modern station was added to the hisyoric art deco style old station that was built in 1918, and it was only 5 min from our hotel. We wrote both bus routes and listened to the city history. The new town was built the 14th century during the reign of Carlos IV. It was build in 2 years and designed with very square street blocks.
We also visited the Alfonse Mucha museum. He was the main art deco painter in Paris and did most of the art deco posters seen everywhere in advertising. But he was originally from Moravia and moved back to Czechia after its independence in 1918 at the end of WWI.
For dinner, we ate at a traditional Czechian restaurant located in the basement of the Opera house. I had roasted pigs knee/knuckle. It was crispy and very tender.

  • Food in Prague

    1.–5. nov. 2024, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Traditional Czechian dishes have a lot of game-mainly deer/venison, boar, and duck. Laura also had roasted pheasant one time. We also had venison and boar cheeks.
The best restaurant we've been to was called Zvonice, and it was located on the 8th and 7th floors of the St Henry's tower-2 blocks from our hotel. We had an amazing meal there.
I started with a sauerkraut potato soup with mushrooms and bacon. Then I had boar tenderloin with mushroom ragout and blackberry sauce. Laura had venison tenderloin with 2 kinds of dumplings in wine sauce and cranberries. Her sauce was the best we had. For desert, Laura had a
chestnut mouse, and I had chocolate truffles that had chocolate ganash in them. Neighbor tables had venison cheeks, lamb shank, and trout. See pictures.
The building had dark wood inside and had an 500+ year old bell. On the 4th floor, there were pictures of the restoration of the 800+ year old tower.

  • Konopiste & St Barbara's church

    2. november 2024, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We rented a car and drove to Konopiste, which was owned by Frank Ferdinand and Sofie from Astria. It was a summer palace/hunting lodge. Apparently, their marriage since Sofie was not a royal was considered lower, and Frank Ferdinand had to sigh that their children would not inherite the title or Habsburg money but had her title. We toured part of the palace and gardens, had lunch, and drove to an ossuary(no pictures allowed either). I had paplova at the coffee shop cross the street. It had ground walnut in the merengue. Then, we drove to Kutna Hora, 10min away, to visit St Barbara's church.
We had dinner back at the hotel. I had the mushroom ravioli, and Laura had Iberian pork cutlets.

  • Karlstejn and Karlovy Vary

    3.–6. nov. 2024, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

We visited Karlstejn castle that Charles IV built to store his crown jewels. I got a parking ticket because I parked up the hill. The policeman asked me who I voted for
Then we drove thru Pilzen, didn't like it, and continued to Karlsbad or Karlovy Vary in Czechian.
We checked in to the Grand Hotel Pupp for 3 nights.
We ate at Goethe's Pub. I had trout with fried potatoes, and Laura had venison goulash. The trout was fresh, but the potatoes were outstanding. Crispy but with a soft center that melted in your mouth. We then had "Beermisu" for desert.

  • Bohemia & Saxony Little Switzerland NP

    6.–7. nov. 2024, Tyskland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

We drove to the Bohemian side of the park this afternoon. I hiked to the arc. The hotel next to it was under restoration, so you could not go under the arc, but it's the hike that matters.
Then we drove to Saxony and stayed the night at the Logis hotel Guatrier 5. Funny name but excellent restaurant. I had trout and Laura had deer cheeks.
The next day we went to the Saxony part of the park which had rock formations a bridge connecting them overlooking the Elbe River. There were the ruins of a medical castle that burned down. Great views

  • Klodzko Valley Poland

    7.–9. nov. 2024, Polen ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Stayed at Hotel Tillia in Polanica-Zdroj, a small spa town. We planned to stay 3 nights, but they were full on the weekend because on Mon Nov 11th is the Polish independence Day. That's the end of WWI when they got their independence from Germany, Austria, and Russia and united as a new nation.
We walked to a local restaurant, and Laura had polish pierozki.
The next day, we drove to Klodzko, known as little Prague, because of its buildings and mini Charles Bridge. We did a lot of shopping because the prices were very low. Took pictures of their cemeteries because they are very colorful.
That night, we went to the ForRest restaurant where I had boar stew over potatoe cake. Laura had 'wild potatoes' that were French fries with boar meat, jalapeños and pomegranate seeds.
On the way back to Czechia we stopped at the pepper museum for pictures and visited a local Ossuary that was decorated with 3000 skulls and had 4 meters of bones pulled up in the basement.

  • Hradec Kralove Czechia

    9.–10. nov. 2024, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Stayed here overnight at an old Jesuit School/Monastery right at the main square downtown. Unique old town boarded by 2 rivers, one being the Elbe(Lobe in Czeck). The monastery had a greek cook and a lot of Greek stuff for breakfast. For dinner, we shared a Ceasars salad. Laura had roast duck with dumplings, and i had venison with dumplings. We also had gingerbread cream brule that was outstanding. The next morning, we climbed 230+ steps for the view from the bell tower. Then we went up and down steps to see the old walls half around the old town. Before we left, we stopped at a Cafe and shared a lavender cake that had a cream cheese filling and lingonberry jam.Les mer

  • Prachov Rocks (Prachovske Skaly)

    10. november 2024, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

WOW!. Visited these rock formations on the way back to Prague for our final overnight before flying home.
A must-see. Amazing rock formations you hike/climb in a short route(1.5km the shorted). But with a lot of steps. You walk in below the rocks, then steps up and around and great viewpoints from the top.
We also tried to visit this one castle build on 2 rock formations with a bridge in between.
