After a few days in Brisbane catching up with my sisters, Ruth and I are waiting at Brisbane airport for our flight to Sri Lanka via Singapore. We expect to land at 11.30pm their time - 3.30am Darwin time or 4am Qld time. We dodged the rain walking from Deb's place to the airport train but the computer system broke when we were trying to get through passport control and they had to ditch the machines and process us separately. Luckily we were in front of the huge Japanese group but it was still very slow with the computers spinning, spinning ..... We were just paged by Singapore Airlines because we hadn't checked in any luggage but we are only travelling with carry on. Can hardly wait to see what other challenges come our way 🤣 Czytaj więcej

Colombo

Arrived at Colombo airport about 11.40pm.last night. Got through to Immigration fairly quickly but they couldn't find any record of our completed online passenger arrival cards so we had to manually fill in another one and join the end of the now lengthy queue. By the time we got some Sri Lankan currency, found our tour guide and other 7 passengers and got on our bus it was almost 1am or 5am Darwin time. Another hour later we had dropped off 5 passengers at their 4 star hotel and the 2 Helens, Ruth and I were at our hotel. Checking in took a little while and eventually they found my name so I signed for the other 3. In spite of Ruth asking if we had 2 beds, there was only 1 (large) bed when we got there so finally swapped with Darwin Helen, had a cold shower and flopped into bed at last. Our room overlooks the ocean, the road and the railway line but thankfully isn't noisy. The trains full of commuters coming into the city kept us amused for a while this morning before we were picked up around 10am for a city tour including "icons, monuments and a temple". Colombo to Anuradhapura

There was a lot of driving today, starting at 5am. The first stop was at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Next was the Anuradhapura world heritage site, one of the country's most historically significant places with temples, stupas, ruins, the sacred Bodhi tree and the obligatory monkeys. Czytaj więcej

Anuradhapura to Dambulla

Today we visited Siguriya (Lions Rock) where 6 of us headed for the climb. It was warm, humid and crowded but we eventually made it to the top.

Next we did a Village tour. We started in bullock cart then crossed a lake on catamarans to the village where we watched 2 Sri Lankan women prepare a meal using old traditional methods. It was very labour intensive but luckily they had prepared much of it earlier and we enjoyed a great meal.

With a storm approaching we raced to to meet the tuk tuks that were taking us back to the bus so we could drive to Minneriya and join an elephant safari. It was pouring rain as we transferred to jeeps but luckily had stopped soon after we started and the covers were taken off the roof so we could stand up and look out. We saw lots of elephants, birds, and a couple of antelope. Czytaj więcej

Dambulla to Kandy

Another full day today starting with a visit to the produce market. Next stop included another climb up quite a few steps to the Cave Temple, a complex of 5 man-made caves and statues carved into a huge rock. From there we stopped at a spice garden before heading for Kandy and what we thought was going to be some free time. Instead we were rushed through a gem factory then a cultural show then another temple with lots of steps and stairs and finally got to our hotel about 7.15pm. Our room is on the 4th floor but the lift only goes to the third so ... more stairs, a long corridor then more stairs. Czytaj więcej

We finally had an easier day in Kandy, the second largest city in Sri Lanka. We started with a walk in the Royal Botanic Gardens. Next was a visit to a tea factory where we saw how leaves are turned into various types of tea before we tasted one of the teas. Back on the bus our guide told us we were going for lunch but when we stopped he tried to get us to look through a wood factory/shop first. He faced a mutiny because there was a batik shop across the road and 7 out of our 9 passengers were female who preferred to go there. He had the last laugh though, as we still had to go through the wood place to get to the restaurant. Four of us had elected to attend a cooking class in a private home so we were dropped off at the bottom of a steep hill while the rest of the group went back to their hotel for a free afternoon. We finally made it to the house and had a fantastic afternoon helping (sort of) to make some delicious food including kokkis, oil cakes, a chicken curry, potato curry, sambal, pittu and string hoppers and then sat down to eat it. Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

We didn't have to rush this morning. The bus picked us up at 10.15 to take us to the station to catch the train to Nanu Oya. The trip took about 4 hours but the scenery was worth it and many photos to sort through. The bus met us when we arrived and took us on to Nuwara Eliya, one of the coolest areas in Sri Lanka as it sits at an elevation of 1800 metres amongst tea plantations. It was favoured by the Scots and English in the colonial era, as can be seen by some of the buildings and gardens. Czytaj więcej

Nuwara Eliya to Katharagama

Our drive to Ella and the Nine Arches Bridge was all downhill through mountainous country on a very winding road. To get to the bridge from Ella we had to go in tuk tuks on a one-lane rough and bumpy dirt road. They caused a traffic jam when they all tried to overtake each other and then there was oncoming traffic and no one was going anywhere. The bridge is "an architectural marvel from the colonial era spanning 91 metres at a height of 24 metres." We had to brave the tuk tuk trip back to the bus and after lunch drove to Yala National Park where we hopped on safari jeeps and went in search of crocodiles, elephants, monkeys, buffalo, deer and leopard. There were plenty of deer, buffalo and monkeys and we saw some crocs but we spent so much time looking for a leopard we had to leave before we could look for the elephants. We wondered why we went back to our hotel in Katharagama in the safari jeeps but we heard it was in case elephants attacked the bus. Czytaj więcej

Katharagama to Hikkaduwa

On the way to Hikkaduwa this morning we stopped to tasted some buffalo curd with honey, served in a small clay pot with a pandanus leaf spoon. I'd already tried it at restaurants and found it similar to yogurt but this one was much nicer. Next stop was at Galle to look at the old Dutch fort. It was initially established by the Portuguese in 1588 but later fortified into the current solid structure by the Dutch in the 17th century. The Galle Fort was recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1988. Also located within the fort walls is the Galle lighthouse, the oldest in the country. Now we're at our hotel, right on the ocean and have free time till midday on Friday when we get in a few more activities before heading to the airport to fly back home. Czytaj więcej

Had a lazy day today. Started with coffee on our balcony overlooking the water then had breakfast and checked out the area around our hotel. We did some shopping and had an icecream then came back to the hotel for a swim in the ocean before retreating to our air conditioned room. Czytaj więcej
