    Journaling and relaxing

    11. syyskuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We spent most of Sunday in the shade, taking advantage of the camping’s lounge areas.
It felt a little unreal to be catching up on journaling near a tree growing actual bananas. There was a lot of catching up to do, so by the time we were done it was already around 5.

We took the forest path to the beach and cooled off after what seemed like a sauna like day, with no escape from the heat.

Part of the beach is reserved for turtles laying eggs there, so it is forbidden to be there after 8pm. We hoped to see some coming ashore, but no luck. See you next time 🐢 turtles.

We had a shower and then grabbed dinner at Saucy bites, the neighbouring camping. It was, by far, the best salad I had in a long time. Not sure if it was the pomegranate sauce or the mix of veggies, but it was delicious. I’m told the burger wasn’t bad either.

All in all, a relaxing day.

    Day at the beach

    10. syyskuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

At last, a full day of not being on the road or having to pack everything up in the morning.

We woke up and made our way to Lukka Coffee shop, right on the beach - rose ice latte and a cappuccino. Then we went for a swim.

We rented an umbrella for some shade. Kabak is still quite raw, but there is just enough service to be conformable. There’s only one cafe on the beach, one place to rent umbrellas from and a few locals offering boat tours in small boats. All campings have a restaurant area and there are 2 small shops in the village.

We had a relaxing day of swimming and sunbathing ad got to watch other travellers look for their way, much as we did the previous evening.

Kabak is a charming, small place, definitely worth a visit. The young are better represented in terms of people, but you can find all ages - as long as they’re free spirited.

    Secret garden camping

    10. syyskuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Kabak is close to the famous Butterfly Valley and Oludeniz. “You have to go to Kabak”, Debbie said during our stay near Izmir. Both her and Iain spoke so highly of the place that we didn’t even do much research about it. We simply looked for a camping on the map and got going.

Kabak feels like a final frontier, a hippie safe heaven, outside the hustle and bustle of the cities. The paved road ends very soon when beginning the descend to the valley. It’s so rough that we thought we wouldn’t make it.

They had warned us about this man who sits at a crossroad. To the left is the camping he gets a commission from. To the right is the very bumpy road that looks like it’s ending there, it actually just takes a very sharp left. “Don’t listen to him, go on..” I remembered them saying.

And so we arrived at this crossroads. It felt like being in a story, where a mythological creature blocks the road. Three times he asked, three times we said no:
-Where are you going my friends?
    -To the beach.
    -Tent?
    -No, beach.
    He points at our tent.
    -Tent?
    -No, the beach.
    -Ok, go that way.

We passed. And moved on. A few minutes later the road really ended - there was road block that scooters went past, but it looked like only small authorized cars were allowed further. I went to look for the camping on foot, using the beach as the guide, as I remembered from the map. My phone battery had died. I returned to the place to find Razvan had gone. I started looking left and right, a man came from a car parked nearby with google translate showing up on his phone.
“I sent your friend to Secret Garden”.
The way I found was only reachable on foot.
    “With the motorbike?”
    “Yes, go left.”

I thanked him and went on to find Razvan coming to get me. He had found the camping, parked the bike and came back to get me.

The camping is a beautiful place, set in a pine forest, 10 minutes from the beach. The tents are set in small areas, nicely spaced, there’s a common area with access to wifi and electricity, clean showers and toilets (cold water only) and a kitchen that serves food if you want it.

We decided to spend at least a day here and enjoy a break from traveling in the heat.

    Beautiful city of Marmaris

    9. syyskuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Marmaris was more peaceful and enjoyable than Bodrum. Lots of beautiful corners in the old city, we really didn’t expect it to be this nice. The Grand Bazar has everything, including a wide variety of spice and plants - including ginseng root. We had a lovely walk here.

Before leaving we had some corn on the green space near the marina, where we parked our bike. We also covered up a bit more, as the sun was really burning hot during the previous days.

The bike was parked near a book collection box, which I found hope bringing.

    Ferry to Datça

    9. syyskuuta 2022, Aegean Sea ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We were close to the ferry port. At some point I got a funny feeling in my stomach telling me we should be there, with the people already boarding the ferry. I walked the 100m over there to double check. Departures: 9 -12 — 17. It was quarter to 9.

I ran back. Razvan immediately knew we have to hurry when we saw me running. We quickly got the bike and went over there.

Things got a bit intense when he was already on the boat with the bike and I was still in the queue, waiting to get tickets. One of the men working on the boat was really upset. People behind me in the queue started yelling saying they can’t leave them behind just because the cashier is slow. Oh, but they could.

    We barely made it.

Morning walk and coffee in Bodrum

    9. syyskuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We woke up early and left the camping. We abandoned the Kos and Rhodos idea, because we couldn’t find any campings on the map. Instead, we planned to catch a ride to Datca, to not go back on the same road.

It was early enough for us to take a walk through the marina area before the castle was open. The town itself felt too touristic, and oriented towards partying.
We tried some new varieties of local cookies with a cup of coffee, while looking out at the sea.

    Camping really late

    8. syyskuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

We left Tepe late and took our time at Pamukkale. Which meant by the time we got to Bodrum it was quite late. We also stopped by the ferry port to check the options for passing to Kos and Rhodos. This meant we had to go into town and into the evening traffic. By the time we got back outside the city it was past 9.

And so the searrch for campings began. The first one we tried had what seemed at first to be very hospitable hosts. After inviting us to park our motorbike inside, they began showing us around the place. And then came the money talk. The place was 3 times more expensive than the usual ones - the catch was that they included breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was from 9 to 11 am and dinner from 7 to 9am. It was 9.15 when we arrived, so too late for dinner. And our plan was to leave at 7, to catch a ferry. They didn’t want to budge on the price, despite admitting it’s also not possible for us to eat. We left.

The second camping we went for turned out to be, not a camping. It was a caravan and bungalow park. They insisted in us staying while they tried to figure something out, but it felt dodgy. Eventually they mentioned a friend of theirs has a place nearby where we could pitch the tent. We left.

The third place we got to was a dead end - perhaps a mistake on my end, as it was really near a beach that mentioned camping on Google, and not a proper camping.

And then finally, we arrived at the Bodrum EcoFarm Camping and Hostel. The owner was friendly and inviting, we were allowed to pitch the tent near the back of the park, to not disturb the other campers by leaving early. We had tea together and chatted with the other hostel guests for a few minutes. We grabbed dinner and went to bed.

Pamukkale - Ancient City of Hierapolis

    8. syyskuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Pamukkale, meaning Cotton Castle in Turkish, is the travertine thermal pool area next to the ruins of Hierapolis. Hierapolis — “Holy City” was inhabited for thousands of years, attracting people due to the thermal springs in the area.

It had one of the best preserved theatres, compared to other ancient Cities and lots of other well preserved buildings. The main attraction are of course the pools of thermal water.

Archeological excavations are still in progress today.

Tepe camping - on top of Pamukkale

    8. syyskuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Remember Mustafa from Oksijen Kamping? He recommended Tepe and we were happy we took his advice.

We arrived at the place after a scenic drive on top of Pamukkale and the surrounding areas. The sun was setting and it gave everything a rose glow that made it even more beautiful.

The owner of Tepe and his wife are lovely people, you could feel kindness even in the way they spoke. She made a traditional vegetarian dish for me, which wasn’t even in the menu, while Razvan tried Kofte, a type of meatballs.
Instead of two glasses of tea we got the whole tea pot. We’re beginners at this, but we even googled tea pots to buy at home, that’s how excited we got. We watched the sun set over the valley, had a delicious dinner and then relaxed over tea.

In the morning, the families camping here made the place feel even more homey.
The water in the shower was lukewarm at best, but we really enjoyed our stay here. Lovely hosts, would definitely recommend.
