I didn't really understand the appeal of this hotel yesterday. Weird uncomfortable pillow, no wifi in the room... But then we came to the rooftop and it made sense then. A perfect place to sort our photos and have a couple of cocktails, and beers! (That were delicious actually).

We also had our first swim in South America, dipping into the pool.

  • Devil's Throat

    7 september 2023, Argentinië ⋅ 🌩️ 21 °C

I'll start by saying this was one of the most incredible experiences I'll ever have in my life. The beauty and power of this spot was unlike anything I've ever experienced. No picture or video will be able to capture the essence of this place in the form of scale or ferocity.

At one point Alex told me to stop and put my phone away, take off my glasses and we stood there on the edge of the fall with the mist spraying over us and the moment just made us cry. Thankfully masked by the absolute drenching we were getting by the spray. A moment that can never be repeated.

  • Iguazu from Argentina

    7 september 2023, Argentinië ⋅ 🌩️ 22 °C

Devil's Throat was definitely the main attraction. But there is so much more here as well. Any one of these waterfalls in Australia would have people hiking for hours to see. Here there are over 200 and each as incredible as the next.

Yesterday when we were on the Brazil side, I thought how much better could it actually get. There we were, seeing all the falls at the same time, I couldn't understand how standing on top of the falls would make them better. But I was so wrong, it was incredible to be up close to these falls. It's the low season at the moment so the number of people was very low, for large parts of the walk it was just Alex and I (our guide was a quick walker).

There is a cute little train you catch to get it to the end of the park. It's a bit squishy first thing in the morning for those with big bums, but still a beautiful ride through the park.

The upper trail takes you over the top of the waterfalls, then the lower tail is in the middle where you can get closer to the middle of the falls.

We met many Coati, who's normal diet is berries, fruits and insects. However they have a preference for burgers and chips. And very naughty, yet pretty, birds.

We couldn't ask for more perfect weather actually. Sure it was a little overcast, but that kept the heat down and great for photos without the sun getting in the way.

A remarkable location, deserving it's right to be one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

  • "No more mas"

    7 september 2023, Brazilië ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

After the jungle drive and 250 stairs (we need the practice for Brazil and Colombia) we arrive at a very powerful jet boat on a river that is flowing at 2 million litres per second where they strap us into a life vest and say "enjoy the shower." Thrown around in the rapids to applause and wooos we get to the base of the waterfalls, which we were only at the top of a few hours earlier watching the volume of water falling off the edge of the cliffs to what waits below... Well in that moment it was us that waited below. Bow first the boat pushed under the falls and no mercy was given to any piece of unprotected clothing. I had the camera, since I was on the edge and becoming disorientated was an understatement. I didn't know which way was up or down as my vision was completely white washed from the downpour above me. What a shot of adrenaline this was, and the perfect way to get a kiss goodbye from a simply epic place.

(Before getting in the boat we were told to call out "Uno mas" meaning "one more" in Spanish to get the driver to go under again. After the third time getting drenched I mistakenly called out "No more mas" as a joke, which makes literally no sense in any language 😂)

Don't ask me what the name means, but the food was exceptional and a good price.

I picked a Malbec at random and it just happened to be the most Argentinean choice I could have made. The front label had a depiction of the last supper with Lionel Messi in the place of Jesus with the FIFA trophies in front of him.

Steak and risotto, amazing pork ribs in a type of gravy. Dessert was an interesting creme brulee with a Yerba mate foam on the side.

It couldn't have been a more perfect dinner to say Chao to Argentina. Tomorrow morning we leave for Brazil, part two of this holiday.

  • Petropolis

    9 september 2023, Brazilië ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

First activity in Rio... Leave Rio. We headed for the mountains to aclimatize ourselves first since the last two locations were relatively cold. We headed for the historic city of Petropolis and we're really glad we did.

The main reason, as we learned, was Brazil had a brief history with a monarchy from 1822 to 1889 but the legacy that was left can be found almost everywhere in Petropolis as well as Rio.

Starting with Dom Pedro I, he declared Brazil's independence from Portugal. Less then a decade later his son Dom Pedro II took over and Petropolis was the summer home for him and his family. He did a lot for the people of the Brazilian Empire, but so did his daughter Princess Isabel who was known for abolishing slavery in Brazil.

Our first stop however was Quitandinha Palace, which was originally built as a casino in the 40s before in the same decade Casinos were outlawed in Brazil. Now it stands as an extremely opulant building and, while I wasn't expecting to be impressed, it was unexpectedly huge on the inside and the definition of grand. Outside is a pond which is in the shape of Brazil.

Next was the Imperial Palace of Dom Pedro II. He loved this area so much, when they were forced to leave Brazil he would write in his letters and ask "How is my beautiful Petropolis?". But we couldn't take pictures there. We even had to wear these funny little slippers for our shoes and scuff around the ground like we were on ice.

The Catedral São Pedro de Alcântara was next and this is a neo-gothoc cathedral and the final resting place of Dom Pedro II, his Wife Teresa Christina and Princess Isobel.

It was so fascinating to learn about the history of this area and it helped put into context all the old style buildings in Rio.

It was obvious this was not a regular tourist spot. We enjoyed meandering around the different stores to see the different items and foods for sale, most of which I'd never heard of before.

  • Rio by Night

    9 september 2023, Brazilië ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Oh my goodness, what a crazy night. Taken around Rio at night in the only way that you should.. By a local Carioca (Someone born in Rio).

We didn't really know where the night would take us, but in the end it went in every direction and we loved it.

First we went to a place by the harbour that all locals make a regular appearance at with friends, family and lovers (and rarely tourists). You sit on this wall and drink, eat and talk the night away. Carioca don't like to be indoors, I know that's a general statement, but we've heard it from three people now.

After a beer, we headed to Lapa, arguably the centre of nightlife in Rio. But nightlife doesn't start until after midnight here and we were there at 8pm, so still a while off. We went for a quick stop at a roof top bar in a hostel to have a look at the view of the aqueduct and surrounds. Then we shuffled over to a bar called Rio Scenarium, which is a three storey place filled with crazy collections of things. Music of different themes from Samba to Rock. And considered one of the 10 best bars in the world.

Walking down to central Lapa, we stopped at a bar aptly named Bar da Lapa. Here the music was loud, so it was time for another beer! So we ordered a tall, something I never expected I'd ever say, and out came a bucket of ice with 10 of them inside. It seems that here in Rio if you like a drink, you like it a lot. We listened to the music and drank our beer and did some people watching.

Somewhere we never thought we'd be, and never really heard of before. Salgueiro Samba School. Samba schools are in each community and are there for rehearsals and earning some income to help support the ultimate goal of winning a place in the top tier of Carnaval. Boy were we in for a show. The music was loud, the people were energetic and the alcohol was strong! Our feet started to shuffle to the beat of the drums and music, but no where near the speed of the dancers on stage. They were amazing and talented. Finishing up with a pizza and another caipirinha, after being talked into it by our very "happy" tour guide.

  • Sugar Loaf Mountain

    10 september 2023, Brazilië ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

"Prepare yourself for a queue tomorrow" was the last advice for our guide Maria. She had seen some videos of the day before, and the queue was down the street. This is one of the busiest tourist attractions in Rio, so we expected it already.

When we arrived though, there was no line. Our luck from Paraguay border continued (Plus some sage planning from our guide to get there as early as possible.)

Sugar Loaf Mountain is in two sections with two cable cars. Advice was to skip the first mountain in the way up and rush to get the best view points from the higher section at 395 metres, half the height of Christ the Redeemer.

The view over the bay and city was stunning. Not only did we have an excellent boarding, the weather was crystal clear.

One of those places you see all the time in advertisements and then have to pinch yourself when you're actually there. We did that while drinking the water out of a green coconut. Because, Rio, right?

  • Escadaria Selaron

    10 september 2023, Brazilië ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Selaron Stairs are as crazy as the man who made them, seemingly.

Selaron himself was a Chilean born painter and sculptor that travelled around to 50 countries by selling his art before finally found home in Rio.

He began painting the steps in the colours of the Brazilian flag, plus red for his love of Formula 1. Constantly running out of money, he would sell his paintings to fund his now obsession with renovating the steps. Gathering tiles from contruction sites and other waste areas around the city originally. Then as his work became more recognised, tiles begun to be donated from over 60 countries in the world.

He said "This crazy and unique dream will only end on the day of my death", and that was what happened when he was found dead on the steps in 2013. 215 steps measuring 125 metres (135 yards) long, which are covered in over 2000 tiles.

Featuring in Snoop Dogg's "Beautiful", as well as U2 also filming there. This is clearly a work of passion, and as busy as it looks, it was actually relatively quiet compared to the high season.

  • Cristo Redentor

    10 september 2023, Brazilië ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Another (New) Wonder of the World crossed off our list. Good thing they keep changing the list or we'll run out soon.

Christ the Redeemer standing at over 700m high he definitely has a remarkable view up there. Facing towards Meccah, he overlooks Rio itself. You are able to look up from almost any point, and unless there is a building in the way then you can see him standing there a top the mountain.

To get up there, there are multiple ways, but the easiest by far is the air-conditioned panoramic train that we took which winds up the mountain side for 20 minutes. Then, take an elevator to go up instead of the 200+ stairs. Our guide Maria knew all the tricks. We were first on the train, first in the elevator, and first to stand there with the other few hundred people all trying to take the perfect Instagram worthy picture.

Then the Cuppachino monkies came over to visit. Crawling over the side of wall at what appeared to be a terrifying fall, they were perfectly at peace showing off to the cameras.

We were told, not that I researched this, but originally it was not going to be Christ. The reason why he is called Christ the Redeemer is because Princess Isabel that we learned about in Petropolis was named Isabel the Redeemer for her actions on abolishing slavery. So the statue was going to be in that place. But she said no to that and there was only one person who deserved that place.

The kind of restaurant where the waiters fuss over you in-between bringing around big metal rods of juicy bbq meat to cut freshly off and into the plate. Big buffet salad bars are the norm here, is not your average sizzler though, everything looked so delicious.

  • Beach Walk and Marius Restaurant

    10 september 2023, Brazilië ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Come for the experience, stay for the food.

Walking along Copacabana beach at night, people packing up day mode and moving into night mode. The beach was still alive with partially clothed beautiful people. We enjoyed the walk as the sun went down until the end of the path and turning back towards our restaurant.

Marius is unlike anything I've been to before. Every inch of the restaurant (and it's big) was littered with decorations. The ceiling, the walls and even the floor.

Sitting down they put a little flag on the table that represent the counties of the people dining at that table. I'm not a flash guy, but looking around there were definitely some I didn't recognise.

This too was a type of Brazilian BBQ, except it included seafood too. Prawns, calamari, fish, octopus and then also the meats of steaks and even wild pig ribs.

The bathroom was an experience on its own. I've never taken so many pictures in one bathroom before. Gravel on the floor, rocks in the sink, big chest like locks on the cubical doors, a wooden toilet and ice in the urinal. I was fascinated.

  • Sunrise at Vidigal Favela

    11 september 2023, Brazilië ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

"That guy gives me the shits. He's got a 9mm and a walkie-talkie and he thinks he's tough."

That was the first sentence from our guide through the favela after getting out off the taxi in reference to a guy standing near us asking where we're going. Welcome to a Rio Favela. Just after hearing the story of a shoot out that morning where the taxi driver lived, a young guy shot in the head. What were we doing!

What we didn't do was warm up our legs, as we headed steeply up a road and then up a set of stairs into our guide's home. Meeting his wife that had been cooking all morning, just for us. As we get to the third floor of this home, the view opened up to this ironically million dollar view of Rio. There were sat and waited for the sun to rise by ourselves while we feasted on pancakes, bacon, fruit, fruit salad, cheese, ham, bread, strawberry juice, coffee, yoghurt, eggs, and pastries... Looking at each other and laughing as we say "what is even happening right now?!"

After breakfast it was time for the tour of the favela. This Favela was on the side of a relatively steep hill. Limited government services and amenities around. But the people on the windy thin streets going about their day, off to their day of work. Truely the backbone of the city but without the minimum living standards you'd expect from your government to provide.

Our guide Henry had lived in the favela for 12 years and was an activist to the community, one of the reasons why I wanted to go with him. I knew my money was going to bettering the community, not just pictures on my phone and a tour companies pocket.

We were taken to a community garden, reclaimed from a trash pile they turned this into a beautiful area of plants and pond. Not to mention the view.

Rounding out of the garden we walked up some stairs back towards the road. Just before we arrived a man came running in front of us from the street into a side ally beside us. Hanging off his shoulder a type of SMG or Uzi. Moments later we see why, as a police vehicle rounds the corner in the road.

Continuing the path through the houses on top of houses we talk about the problems and issues causing the favelas. Sanitation being one of them, as we enter a grade 1 and 2 school to the smell of raw sewage from the storm water drain beside the school.

No building code required here, as we see the fresh slapped together brickwork holding these places together. How they even stay standing makes you wonder.

We entered into a area that someone had dedicated a lot of time to make as beautiful as possible for the kids. Because the rest of the places was no where you'd want your kid to play. Brightly painted walls with art and a little playground.

Inside Vidigal is a tiny church. A church that was going to be knocked down, but before the area became a favela it was visited by Pope Benedict. He said the area was too beautiful to knock this church down and blessed it by leaving his papal ring. I wonder what he would say if he saw it today.

Cutting through an area, there were a bunch of guys sitting around. Casually saying good morning in Portugese as we walked though like it was completely normal. But each of them holding assult rifles and one of them even had two walkie-talkies, so I knew he must have been important. Later to find out he was recently made #3 on the heirachy because he took out the previous #3 for doing a poor job. Just another guy for that guy it seemed, since apparently he already had 50 to his name. Who knows if it's true or not, but it makes for a good story. The only thing I knew was true were the guns.

How good was that sun rise though? Lol

Thinking of my sister as I walked through. Insectavore species had a little glass house with the different varieties.

We sat down to drown ourselves in water. It was so humid that day. But that is the moment I started to get more sick.

Walking towards the orchid house, we sit a few more Cuppachino monkies playing. The orchid variety was huge and most in flower it seemed. I big range of colours, red, yellow, white and blue.

We had to call it a wrap at that point, I was in too much pain and wanted to head to the hotel. But we did take them long route to go through as much of the park as possible.

  • Carnaval Experience

    11 september 2023, Brazilië ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

A behind the scenes tour of how Carnaval is organised inside a huge area called Samba City.

Samba City is a huge area of warehouses dedicated to the top league of Samba Schools who scored the highest points in Carnaval.

These huge warehouses are where the floats and costumes are designed, prototyped, built and rehearsed.

Because they had already started the building for next year's floats, no photos were allowed in that area. But we went up to see the area they had put together that contained last year's costumes and designs for that school.

We got up close and personal to the experience because we booked it private. Learning about the time line for the year, the history, the culture

But that's when we got too up close and personal, they dressed us up in some costumes for a photoshoot. Before attempting to show us the basics of the Samba before two professionals came out to dance with us. In that moment we realised just how much of middle aged white guys we are. Yes there is a video, no it will never been seen.

  • Afro-Rio Vibes and Pedra do Sal

    11 september 2023, Brazilië ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Each of the places we visit we learn a little more each time. The history and cultural development over time in South America is amazing. Tonight was to enjoy the vibrancy and festivity of the Afro-Rio community here. Meeting in an area by the docks where the slaves from Africa were off boarded from the Portugese colonist boats. Today it's filled with colour, loud music, food and drinks.

The statue to welcome us to this street is Mercedes Baptista, the first black woman to join the corps de ballet at Teatro Municipal.

When we arrived it was still early, and it would have been much busier if we left when expected. However at this point I was feeling too unwell and we had to cut it short. But we walked through the streets, had a drink and something to eat as we listened to the music.

We sat at a bar beside Pedra do Sal. The birthplace of Samba. It is a rocky hill which served as the meeting place for Afro-Brazilian to get together and develop the music and the dance. Tonight it is where people would sit and watch on the steep hill and enjoy the happenings of the night.

As we were leaving we noticed people walking around selling food labelled "Brownie Magico". Unfortunately I don't speak Portuguese so I'm not sure what it was.
