  • Casanova!

    17 juni 2017, Peru ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Alarmclock at 3:30am to be the first ones catching the bus up to Machu Picchu. We all met at 4am at the bus station, organized some coffee, chatted and so the 90min were over fast and we were on the first bus. There was still some mist and clouds up there, the landscape changed every minute, it was just beautiful. Coco expected the sun at 7.15am, the sun came out at 7:17am, almost shining directly through the window of the temple of the sun since it's soon the shortest day. Coco was in topform. He was a guide at this mystical place for years and has been there more then a thousand times. We had a very good tour around the cite and then it was time to say goodbye to Coco. We went back to the entrance and saw again Casanova! We spotted them at day one and again on the track. He and Mister Green (we have no idea who they really are) were always wearing spotless white shirts and were very classy. It was so funny that we saw them again on the last day. Later on I went up to the Portas del Soles where the view was again breathtaking, then I walked down to Agua Calientes. Nina, Earl and me had a drink at their hotel lobby and played Spanish Monopoly, it was very funny. We took the train to Ollantaytambo and the bus to Cuzco. We said goodbye to the girls and I am looking forward seeing Nina and Earl again tomorrow!Läs mer

  • Three entrances

    18 juni 2017, Peru ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

I am very sorry for the ones doing my laundry today because the socks, oh dear. I had breakfast in company of a canadien couple and walked up to some ruins where I had rendez-vous with Nina and Earl. Well, if you do not know that there are three entrances it is quite a challenge to find eachother. We did and spent a good time together, enjoying the sun and the warm weather. Then again, time to say goodbye. I am pretty positive to see them again, I'll just have to plan another trip to visit all the wonderful people I met on this one 😊Läs mer

  • Misti

    20 juni 2017, Peru ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

I had a full day in Arequipa arriving by nightbus on monday. Yamina, Bran, Belgian cousins, I met in the bus and me and breakfast together, then I rented some walking sticks for trek number three. I met Marcos again for lunch, had guinea pig (it tastes a bit like very good chicken) and got more and more excited for the big hime up to 5800m above sea level.
I got picked up at 8o'clock, joining me were Severin and Olivier from Thun, Chantal from Grund bei Gstaad, Eva, a German and Ophir, an Israeli. Very cool group. We picked up some more gear like grampons, ice axe, tents, I took some warm pants and gloves, it was supposed to be very cold up there. We started at 3400m with about 15kg on our back. The hike to our base camp at 4500m was very scenic with a great view over Arequipa and Chachani, the other volcano slightly above 6000m. Arriving there, we put up our tents and had soon diner, a soup and spaghetti, exactly what you need. We went to bed early since the alarm clock would go off at 1am the other day...

  • Misti II

    21 juni 2017, Peru ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Wow, that was one long, exciting day! After a short breakfast we left the camp without the camping gear at 2:20am with our head torches and a lot of motivation. We had 1300m to climb up and had a good pace, everyone in a good shape. We made breaks every hour, sunrise was soon and the shadow of Misti looked like a pyramid over Arequipa, beautiful! At around 5500m we had to put on our crampons and take our ice picks since we had some ice/snow fields ahead. After a very steep crossing we arrived at the border of the crater and had still about 150m to go up. That's when I started to feel a bit nauseous and very tired. Lack of oxygen and a bit of altitude sickness, I thought. It went through my head of stopping here and not going to the top but hey, as Marcos said, once in a lifetime, right? And there is my head, whenI want something, well, I thought, das geit de scho. So we continued the last, again very steep bit to the top. Oh dear, that cross didn't and didn't get closer. I don't really know how I did the last steps in the sand but the I was there. What a view at more then 5800m!
Because I felt worse (what a suprise...) I just sat down and concentrated on breathing. I took only a couple of pictures and was happy to get down quite soon. I got a bit worried, we had in total 2400m to go down, first crossing again this very steep ice field. Well, it wasn't fun, defenitely not the best moment of my trip but we made it safely to a place where we would take an alternative route down, or a short cut, as our guide said. And I think that saved my whole day. We could slide down the sand, making lot's of meters in a short time. We arrived at base camp at around noon, the others had diner, I took a nap, still feeling so weak, tired and nauseous. You are of no use in this state, couldn't help the others taking the tent down. My companions were great, all not affected by the altitude, helped me with water, carrying things and gave me big big moral support. Chantal offered me a peach juice which I could drink and keep because, yes vomiting was also involved in the whole thing just to loose all dignity up there. So that was the first sugar in 10hours, gave me the kick and zagg, I was almost back to normal. The way down was again sand sliding, very funny. We arrived at the parking lot around 3:30pm, put all the luggage on the roof, sat in the car and it broke down. So we had to wait for another one to pick us up. That made me arrive at the hotel way later then expected. I had diner at Marcos, said ciao to him and his family and went to bed early without packing anything for tomorrow. What a day! I am so greatful everything went well and I am so looking forward to see Sophie again for our road trip in California!

Three girls on a bike. Good plan. Sophie and me had breakfast at IHOP. Yummie. Angie, the lady I met in the plan to Perth, is in SF because of a conference her husband is attending. She joined us for a very nice and long trip to Tiburon all the way over the very famous (because it was by the time to longest suspension bridge when built) golden gate bridge. We had a lot of fun biking up and down the street under the Californian sun, arriving just ten minutes before the ferry to leave. Timing. Then we headed to the Museum Science Cal (oder so), which both of us liked very much. We had diner with Angie and then said goodbye to her again with an invitation to visit her once in Florida.Läs mer

  • Roadtrip 2.1: Sophie, Silvetta and me

    27 juni 2017, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Juhuuu, another renting car, another roadtrip! We were a bit disappointed that it wasn't pink so we changed the planned name of Rosetta to Silvetta and off we were! It is such a difference to sing along to silly songs when you are two. It's so so nice that Sophie is with me. We stopped at places we liked, had lunch in a very English pub, visited a bunker, a lighthouse and went to the mistery spot. It is somewhere in the woods where the compass needle does funny things (that's what they say.) So everything is very steep and queer. You are in a cabin, all is tilted at a 17° angle. Your brain does not get it so you are a bit dizzy, you walk like a drunk and are surprised when the water is running upwards. With the very bad jokes of our guide (it reminded me of the tunnel tour back in Perth) this was a very funny thing to do. We arrived in Santa Cruz, our first stop and ended the day with some delicious fish on the beach - what more to ask for!Läs mer

  • Where's the sun? Are there pebbles? (No)

    29 juni 2017, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We had breakfast at the Happy Girl Kitchen Company, the name very adequate to our mood. We were excited to start our drive to Big Sur with the 17miles around Monterey peninsula, strolling at the pebble beach on the pebbles under the californian sun. Which was hidden behind the clouds almost until Big Sur. But then the sky got endless and the views were stunning. We had a wonderful drive until we had to turn around since mudslides damaged the road further south. We had the idea of spending the rest of the day on the pebbles at Pebble beach. Good plan. Eigetlech. It is a fancy golf resort and there are no pebbles at the beach. At all! Why call it pebble beach? It's just sand told as the posh lady from the golf shop. She had no idea where this very misleading name comes from. So we continued our drive back to Pacific Grove to get coffee and cake somewhere else. Again, what a beautiful day!Läs mer

  • Summer!

    30 juni 2017, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We visited the Pinnacle NP since Highway 1 is closed further south. On the way there we went to Starbucks drive thru. We felt so American. Ordering a coffee in the car. So coool! And then we missed the box. Hihi. The lady was very nice to us and said also locals miss it so we didn't feel that stupid 😊We had a nice walk, saw a rattlesnake (wow!) and enjoyed the warm sunny weather. Our next stop was Santa Barbara, we stopped for not so royal lunch in King City. The drive was scenic and we arrived at around 6pm, had Fish on the wharf and half a ton of icecream. We are still not used to US sizes. Sophie had two scoops, me just one, it felt like a coupe in Switzerland 😊Läs mer

  • Santa Barbara

    1 juli 2017, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

The plan was to leave Santa Barbara early to spend a couple of hours at the beach and then head to L.A. But again, the sun did not really wanted to work its way through the mist or whatever it was so we drove till Malibu, had a second blueberry pancake breakfast there at the beach and drove to L.A. Ir was said to be the worst traffic from the West Coast, they are probably right. It was very busy being a Saturday starting the long weekend since July 4th is soon coming. Sophie, who drove all the way down, did a wonderful job so we dropped our luggage in Alhambra, where we stay and gave back the rental car. Before entering the renting car area were a bump with some spikes. We were afraid to pass and destroying our wheels so we waited for another car to come. We let him pass and of course nothing happened. The driver stared at us a bit confused. But at least we knew nothing would happen, right? After that we strolled around downtown, were wondering why all the stores were already closed at 6pm and had a delicious mexican diner (on a bizzli hard cushion, gäu Sophie) 😊Läs mer

  • Hollywood. Where is the glamour?

    3 juli 2017, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We got up at 6:30 to take the bus and the metro to the Hollywood Studio like probably half the US. It was packed, we had still much fun, though expecting something different, what exactly we don't know. Waiting for the attraction was long so we debated if the jurassic park thing was worth it. We ask a friendly staff member and he offered us a priority pass! How cool was that. After ten minutes we were sitting in the boat for a funny ride with a free shower in the end.
Before dinner we went to the walk of fame. Again. Just stars on the floor. We are not so into this Hollywood thing, I guess. For diner we had a goddess salad in a very healthy vegan diner with a therapy room, too. We didn't know that. It was very green, bizar at the point where they would offer i.v. therapy against all sorts of things upon 155$. We really needed a Brownie after that. With lot's of ice cream. On the way home there were some road closed because of the 4th so the bus was taking another route. We weren't the only ones not knowing that. One guy said not nice words about the public transport in L.A. We think it's quite good so far, it just takes ages. So yesterday we had to take again the metro to another station and wait another hour to get home. But we did and going to bed was even nicer like that. And tomorrow we are invited at a 4th of July BBQ at Rich's, an American I've met in Romania 11years ago. So exciting!

    4 juli 2017, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

"You came by public transport? Seriously?" Yes we did and it was an experience. We left our place at around 10:30. The plan was to take the bus to downtown, have a cozy breakfast, then head to Rich's home. First step in the plan was easy. Then we wanted to buy the ticket for the 12.30 train to Fullerton. There was a nice young man at the ticket machine, he got us a ticket in no time - but for the wrong train, leaving only at 2pm. He works not for Antrak but Metrolink. Hmmm. Doof. So we thought of buying the ticket from Antrak. This was not possible because you need either a passport or a driving license for identification. We had none of those items on us. I am mean for going on a 30 minutes train ride you meed ID?! So we had to wait for two hours at Union Station. There is nothing to do there and eating was out since we just had breakfast. So we tried to go shopping taking the Metro. But as mentioned, everything takes a looooot of time so we had approximately 10min of shopping before going back. We finally were in the train to Fullerton, it was almost 15min late. We had to rush to catch the other bus. It was very hot but we did it. And we arrived at Rich's. Yeah!! Finally. At 4pm. "Why didn't you just take an Uber?!" Well. No idea.
Anyway, it was so nice to meet Rich again, we shared a lot of memories of our time in Brasov. We had a wonderful afternoon at his place, meeting lot's of people and then heading to the park for the very big and very beautiful firework. To get back we took an Uber. It took 50minutes 😊

  • Bye Sophie / Wiedersehen Nr. 14

    6 juli 2017, Förenta staterna ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

We decided to head to the beach again yesterday so we went again to Venice. The journey down there took forever since we got out of the bus a stop too earlier and then missed the following bus. Not that we would have been there that much faster but it felt like that. We went first shopping and then I read Rich's book for kids on the beach. It's called EB: Back on the Beat, a really well written and funny book about an undercover lizard agent.
We had a delicious diner at the cheesecake factory with dessert of course. Today we decided to have breakfast in Venice again and having our nails done. Ahh, that was nice, massage included. I had then to say tschüss to Sophie, that was not that fun at all but since I see her again next week it wasn't that bad. Even more that I had rendezvous with Linda and Louis, a couple I met on Aranui and lives in the area of L.A. We were so happy to see eachother! I love reunions like that. They showed me the Getty, a beautiful art mueseum on a hill. I got spoiled all the way, the two of them being wonderful. Thank you so much, what a great way to spend the last evening in the West coast before heading to Washington DC!

  • Washington, a big pleasant surprise

    8 juli 2017, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

I landed after a very short night in the plane at the airport of the capital. After dropping off my luggage and a second coffee I decided to visit the Newseum which is a very interesting, well made and interacting museum. It is one of the rare ones you have to pay entry fee but it's valid the other day, too. It is totally worth it.
Since I was so tired I called it an early night and went again today. I also visited the Hirshhorn, which has an exhibition on Ai Weiwei. He built with Lego more then 170 portraits of people being held or were in prison because of political reasons. It made quite an impact on me.
All in all Washington is very neat place, you can walk or bike everything easily even more on such a nice day as we have today.
Funny thing: Not many people pay cash here - I do and as you get back the change I either give it as a tip or put it right back into my purse. I never check it, so now I have a coin from Fidji, one from Canada and one from Mexico in addition 😊

  • Stuck in a moment

    9 juli 2017, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

I am sitting somewhere on a recreational area looking at the cars on the highway who haven't been moving for an hour now. There is a fatal accident approximately 2km ahead of us and the whole highway is closed. No idea how long, the bus driver said something between 3-4hours. Luckily we are not involved in it and that I have the flight back home from New York tomorrow. I have a very interesting neighbor, Philippe, from Paris, working for a company that produces skin for medical and cosmetical use. We have been talking the whole trip now so the time passes quickly.
Otherwise I let my thoughts go out and wander around. What an adventure my trip was so far. I can't believe it comes to an end soon. It as a gift and a privilege to have the freedom (by my fancy red passport, by money, by culture, my job, my family, the century I live in (many of those things came to me just by luck)) to travel around the world. It is by far not a banality or granted to be as free as I am. So I am grateful for that.
And now I hope that this accident hasn't been as bad as it sounds and that we will make it to New York safely. New York, so cool!

    10 juli 2017, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

My last day in New York was like this whole trip: wonderful 😊. I had a nice chat with a salesman, he was born in Peru and lived for 20 years in Japan and now is here in New York. I walked down 5th Avenue, had breakfast at the Butcher's Daughter, where Sophie and I were in California, too. Then I headed to the Moma Design Store and came out with a little less money. I decided to walk the Highline and head back to the hotel early enough. Yesterday we arrived at 6:30pm, four hours later by the way.
I had been on the Highline im winter with snow, also very pretty but today, it was beautiful! They did a great thing up there, some people really have good ideas. It wasn't my last time in New York.
Now I am sitting at the airport and waiting for my flight. What more to say, I am going home.

Wow, what a wonderful way to come home. My dad and my younger brother waited for at the airport. We went to the other arrival hall and looked for Melinda and Mark coming from Dubai. We didn't really said a time or a place bit suddenly Mark was in front of me and it was so cool meeting them in Switzerland! I was a bit overwhelmed by all the things happening and seeing them was just adding up. They headed into town and and we to Murten. We were home quickly and also waiting for me was Joya, our very old dog. She didn't hear me coming since deaf, probably a bit senile, too, but I think she recognized me anyway. It was a bit curious that my mum didn't come to the airport. It was even more odd when there were big tables and benches in the yard. I knew that my other brother would come as well but with the time it was clear that some more people would come to have a welcome back party and surprising me. And they came and I was in a bliss the whole evening. Having almost all my favorite people around me was perfect. Going away is a really cool thing but coming home like this is the best.Läs mer
