    8 Eylül 2024, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Call in here for a toilet break and a quick check over. I get to pat a water buffalo - let me say definitely not soft and cuddly!
It's a brief stop on the way to Jabiru.

We stop here again the next day on our way back to Ronnie's. This is another toilet break, but we also stay and have a drink this time. Lovely outdoor/indoor style of bar and dining area. Can see why it is a good tourist 'stopover'.
Once we finish our drinks, Rog buys a couple of 'takeaways' for the trip to Gary's - where we'll collect Norma before going 'home' to Ronnie's.

  • Cooinda - boat cruise with Ronnie

    8 Eylül 2024, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We are in Yellow Water Region, using the Cooinda Boat Ramp into Yellow Water Billabong. Ronnie and Roger get the boat in, while Norma, Alison and I slather ourselves with sunscreen on the small jetty beside boat ramp. We all make sure we've got hats, sunglasses, water, sunscreen, eskis with provisions (snacks and cold drinks) and our mobiles before we all get on board the boat and Ronnie takes us along the waterways. Just great! Wonderful day to be out on the water, and so much to see and enjoy, birds, crocodiles, buffalo and the scenery.Okumaya devam et

  • Jabiru Caravan Park

    8–9 Eyl 2024, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Arrive at Kakadu Lodge, check in and go to our 2 bedroom cabin No. 25. Settle in - very happy as air-conditioning already on, so we are in a nice comfortable environment when it's 39° outside.
We've got 5 of us staying here, Roger and I in a queen room, Norma and Alison in the other bedroom that has 3 single beds (1 bunk bed and a single), Ronnie happy to sleep in the lounge area - either on the couch, or move out a single bed mattress from Norma and Alison's room.
Once we've settled in, I go for a quick walk to suss out the pool and bar/dining area - all good! Meet the others who are ready to go for a swim heading to this area, I'll meet them there in a while - I'll catch up on this journal 1st. I run out of battery on my mobile so leave it to recharge and go and join the rest of my crew at the pool. We're here for Happy Hour so Alison and I have a couple of cocktails (Apple Melon Fizz - Midori, Tequila, apple juice and soda) while Norma enjoys her red wine, and the 'boys' stick with their beers. We all head back to our cabin to wait for Gary to arrive once he finishes work, he's coming along to have tea with us. No sooner have we got back, we get a call from Gary wondering where we are, as he's arrived at the pool/bar/dining area! Norma goes to Gary and brings him back to our cabin. Have a quick drink, then we all head over to have tea. We settle ourselves at a nice spot at a long table on the lawn, discussing what we'll order (I've already sussed out menu - tossing up between chicken parma or calamari). I'm hungry as I had quite a light lunch (piece of pull apart ham & cheese bread and an apple). Next thing I know, we've got a staff member telling us 'very sorry, we're not doing any more meals this evening', they had already been serving meals, but the chef/cook has become crook and stopped cooking. Oh dear......as I'm still in my bathers I go and get changed to be ready for our next tea plans. When I rejoin the others, Kevin, a good friend of Gary's has arrived, so Gary happy to stay put and have a good catch up with him, while the rest of us go find some tea. As we've all been enjoying some drinks (later we realise Norma had only had one drink and would've been fine to drive) it's decided it should be a place within walking distance. General consensus by those with the knowledge (Gary and Ronnie) is that Kakadu Crocodile Hotel is the closest, well as I'm ready to eat I make the move to get going (otherwise I can see the 'boys' are settled drinking and we'll miss food serving times!). Norma, Alison, Ronnie, Rog and I go walking (Rog changes from his bathers on the way past our cabin) - and 20 minutes later (after lots of fun banter on the way) we turn up at 'Croc Hotel' - turns out to be the 'high end' of fine dining in Jabiru. Oh well as it's now 7.20pm, we resign ourselves to the 'long wait' to eat - we can't be seated at a table until 8pm. We have a drink and sit near the bar area. When we get our table we order immediately - then have the wait staff return to let us know that 3 of us can't have the meals we ordered (the same dish double cooked chicken 'Papparella') - so we reorder, all having different now - except Roger and Ronnie both having the kangaroo dish. While waiting for our meals, Roger does one of his 'sneezes', which results in scaring wait staff and gets a round of applause from neighbouring tables (in sympathy for the scares I think). Anyway, we end up fed (expensively so) - with the fellas agreeing it's the best roo they've eaten, just not enough of it! We do the return walk to our cabin, back before 10pm. Drinks (cuppas etc) then bed.
Monday morning sees us up, getting our own breakfasts (we've brought with us) and a couple of us having showers (me too). Alison and Norma have decided it would be good if we could check out one of the Falls that is suitable for swimming this morning. We're all happy with that idea. It works out that Jim Jim Falls are our closest approx. 100km away. We pack up and off we go leaving around 8am.

  • Jim Jim Falls

    9 Eylül 2024, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We arrive in good time (not too hot yet) after driving in on the 4wd track. Norma, Alison and I head to the toilet block to get changed into our bathers, then we go back to the vehicle where Ronnie and Roger got changed, and we prepare ourselves for the walk in to the Falls. Unfortunately Alison only has thongs to wear on her feet - this proves to be very hard work for her with the rugged terrain (rock scrambling) along the tracks. Once we get to the 'plunge pool' (we didn't work out how to get into the 'beach pool') we're very happy to get in the water - sharing this pool with friendly little fish. Some nice sized Black bream I see as well. Now do the 'hard' trek back to our vehicle (Gary and Learne's Landcruiser), Alison wears Ronnies's sandals on the way back, Ronnie manages in bare feet! Next driving back to Jabiru to meet Gary when he finishes work. Turns out that when we meet up with Gary (just after 2pm), he ends up towing the boat back behind his truck, Norma travels back with him to keep him company.Okumaya devam et

  • Cahills Crossing

    9 Eylül 2024, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Ronnie brings us here to this popular spot to see the phenomenon of all these 'salties' hanging out in the same area (not so normal as they're very territorial) with the shared idea of catching fish. Incredible to watch these crocodiles just floating about in the rushing water (where the fish are) with their front legs splayed out and claws showing above water - a technique they use for fast water fishing.
The other reason that it's such a tourist attraction - is the running water is created by the tides going over a road that has to be used by locals - so they cross the river with this water running and the crocodiles sharing the same area. Quite a sight to see!

  • Ronnie's in Palmerston

    9–11 Eyl 2024, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Arrive back here after our time away exploring some of Kakadu. Time for tea, so Ronnie goes and gets some supplies from nearby shops and we have a BBQ with chicken kebabs, kangaroo burgers and pork sausages, served with bread rolls, bread, coleslaw, cheese, beetroot and relish. Do our tidy up, relax on the balcony until we all head off to our beds.
Tuesday morning has Roger and I preparing things ready for us to leave tomorrow. After our breakfast, I start the washing, Roger repacks the ute. Later in the morning I walk to the closest shopping centre to get my mobile camera screen fixed again $40 and cancel my 'touch up' eye-liner tattooing appt - no way we can manage to come back to Darwin so soon on this trip. Roger meets me at the shopping centre and we drive to Gateway Shopping Centre (bigger) to do our grocery shop and get a couple of items - new cord for Hema Maps unit and a armband phone carrier. Return back to Ronnie's for lunch, we all use up leftover salads with Ronnie cooking up some of his Barramundi.
Afternoon is spent relaxing, finishing washing etc and keeping cool in Ronnie's pool. 1st time we've had Norma, Alison, Ronnie, Roger and I all in the pool at the same time.
Roger and I get ready, after having showers, to go out for our planned Darwin Harbour Cruise. We leave for this (driving) at 4.45pm to make sure we get there by 5.30pm - we do.
Later when we're coming back from our evening out with family and friends we stop and fuel up the ute. Once back at Ronnie's, Roger showers and heads to bed. I stay up watching a movie with Norma and Ronnie, Alison has already gone to bed. The movie was nice - Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Lopez...... Now bedtime.
Oh wow - this time has gone too quickly, this Wednesday morning sees us leaving Ronnie's and our Darwin time of this trip over. It's all been fantastic - especially catching up with Ronnie and his generous hospitality, we've been very well looked after. So we get up and have our breakfast as usual, Roger then gets stuck into caravan leaving prep, while I make the most of mobile reception and internet while we've got it here - and get our budgeting and bill paying sorted. Then I have a quick 'freshen up' shower (allows me to leave Ronnie's spare bathroom all cleaned and tidy) before I join the rest- Ronnie, Norma and Alison along with the ready and waiting Roger, for my share of the morning tea custard slice (made by Norma and Alison) - on Ronnie's balcony. Time to get underway, say our heartfelt thanks and goodbyes - were on the move around 10.30am.

We board the boat and have a very enjoyable evening, cruising the Darwin harbour and surrounds, while watching the sunset and eating a lovely buffet dinner.
Tour goes for 2.5hrs - evening was great, weather warm but very bearable on the water.
After the cruise finishes, we all have another drink together on the wharf, before we all head off. We get back to Ronnie's around 9.45pm.
Jen and Michael heading off from their Motel tomorrow on their Ghan trip to Adelaide.
Tomorrow Lisa and Tony, leaving their friends place (been staying at Becky and Keith's near Coolinga) and starting their way back home to Mt Gambier. Their 1st stop on the way is Edith Falls - so happy this turns out to be where we'll be too.

  • Edith Falls Campground Leliyn

    11–13 Eyl 2024, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Arrive and go straight to our familiar Site No. 50 and settle in and set up. By the time we're finishing this, Lisa and Tony have arrived and are settling on their campsite No. 20. We're now ready to go for a swim and check out the lower pool of water here, so agree to meet up there when Lisa and Tony ready too.
This place is great - just beautiful, and the lower pool is spacious and a delight to swim in (sandy bottom with clear running water - and good mix of shallow and deep). We stay relaxing in the water until we all feel it's time to head back for drinks and tea preparation.
We meet up for our shared tea around a provided BBQ - barramundi supplied by us from Ronnie, spuds with bolognaise sauce and extras supplied by Lisa and Tony - bolognaise sauce made by their friend Keith (who we met again last night on our Darwin Harbour Cruise). Enjoy our meal together - great company, before heading back to ourcown caravans to tidy up and go to bed. We've arranged to all meet at 7.30am to do the loop walk (2.6km) which will include a higher swimming spot.
Have to say Roger and I didn't get the best of sleeps, quite warm without the use of Ronnie's power to use our air conditioner!! Thank goodness for the fan in our van or it would be worse. So we get up early as arranged, we dress in our bathers and sensible footwear for the walk. Meet Lisa and Tony on time, and we all enjoy the loop walk with a lovely swim at the 'upper pool' - wonderful floating about with our water noodles. Come back to camp to have a cook up of bacon and eggs etc, around the same communal BBQ we used last night. After breakfast Lisa and Tony pack up and get ready to leave - they're heading for Mataranka today. They kindly take our 'unnecessary' stuff (2 camp chairs, and a box of my incidentals - books, pamphlets, spare sheets) with them to take back to Dunkeld when they go and use our place for a holiday break 😊🤞 Lisa and Tony come and say 'goodbye' before they head off just after 11am.
Roger and I just relaxing around camp for the morning. Roger doing a few 'tidy up' jobs and I'm just catching up on writing this. As breakfast was more like brunch today, we're not fussed for lunch so we head off to spend some of the afternoon swimming and hanging out near the water. This was a relaxing afternoon - when out of the water I sat in one of our small camp chairs and read, while Rog lay on his towel (both of us in the shade) and had naps. Eventually head back to our camp to have drinks and think about tea. Chicken snitzels with salad. Then we both go have showers before tidying up, doing dishes. Very warm in our caravan, but too many insects outside, so again glad we've got a fan. Relaxing before bed.
Slept better and wake up 6.20am wanting to go for a walk to Sweetwater pool - it's a 8.6km return so I need to go early before it warms up too much and be back in time for our 11am departure time. Leave Rog to have a 'lie in' and start off on the trail around 6.40am. I go in my bathers and slathered in sunscreen with my faithful camelbak backpack and sneakers. Enjoy this walk - can see why doing the Jatbula hike is so popular - this is the last section of that hike - when I reach Sweetwater pool, it is stunning (larger than I expected) but it is before 8am so I decide I'll return and then have a swim. So that's what I do, go to our caravan 1st, (now 9am) have breakfast - muesli and yoghurt with a cuppa - then get organised to have a shower on my way back from my swim, go for a swim, then shower, Help with the final packing in the caravan, then off we go at around 10.30am. Now heading for Katherine.

    13 Eylül 2024, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 36 °C

Arrived and booked a powered site $45. Able to choose our own position in the drive through sites, so we make our selection and settle in. Roger quick to cool off in the pool, then we have a beer and wander around the caravan park to check it out. We like what we see, amenities are clean and it's lovely to have shady trees. Once we finish our drinks - we go check out the shop and the restaurant - all good, not that we need to use, just happy to suss out. Now we just relax at our caravan- make a call to Robert to say G'day. Have a dunk in the pool before tea, steak, onion, capsicum, potatoes done on BBQ in camp kitchen with boiled mixed veggies done in our caravan - eaten in our caravan. We both go have showers, then tidy up, do dishes. Now to relax with the air-conditioner going, having a cuppa. Will get on the computer to pay some bills before bedtime. Didn't end up doing the bills - realised Stacy hasn't sent all the rates yet. Went to bed and read instead for a short time.
Good sleep with air-conditioner running. Wake up around 7am, we decide to give Tegan a call - catch up on her news, contracting to another dog walker to help out with their clients - woo hoo! So Tegan can step into her next phase of her business with morning and afternoon sessions. Robert briefly on the call too, but he needed to keep on working (making noise with his tools).
Next we get up, have breakfast - porridge with fruit, we're using up stuff before going through quarantine today. I get a call from Stacy, lovely to hear from her, she's helping me get our bill paying sorted, and lovely to chat about Canada holiday plans. Roger pretty much has us ready to move out, so I finish up this call (Stacy ready to finish off too) and get myself organised and do the little inside pack up jobs. Leave this caravan park around 9.30am.

Naturally as it is manned and operating 24hrs it is professional and stream lined. 3 staff that we could see, 1 assigned to us - asks questions, we answer, then checks in our ute and caravan - fridges and pantry areas inspected. No hassles, think our inspector took us at face value - so very preliminary check over.
We had 2 pieces of firewood 'confiscated' due to still having bark on them.
Onwards we go into WA - notice the time change! Our time has just gone back an hour and a half ie from 12noon to 10.30am.

    14–18 Eyl 2024, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Book in for 4 nights - get Site 23, which may be 'snuggly fit' for us we're told. Once Roger has our caravan in our chosen position- unless we're reading the map incorrectly - we've got plenty of room - yep we've got plenty of room for the 2 of us! Once we're set up, it's around lunchtime so Roger makes up his meat and salad sandwiches and I do my open toasties - relish, meat and cheese. We relax for abit, before going for a drive to go to the Tourist Information Centre, then replenish on fresh vegetables and fruit with a grocery shop at Coles. We also try calling at the WA Rangers to organise our WA Parks Passes - annoyed no one there - until we remembered it's a Saturday afternoon. We also fueled up the ute, Roger happy $1.87 litre. Head back to our caravan and put away groceries. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and keeping ourselves cool with dunks in the swimming pool. Tea tonight is silverside and vegetables with mustard sauce (Thermomix) followed by a Cadbury block of chocolate (we share). Tidy up and Roger is happy to get to bed, as we're planning an early start in the morning. I stay up a while, doing my budgeting books and checking on bills.
Sunday morning has us waking up at 4am from Roger's alarm. Early start as we're doing a 8km walk in Keep River National Park (back in NT) and we want to beat the real heat of the day. We have porridge for breakfast, Roger has toast as well. Roger has made and packed our lunches (cold corn beef and salad sandwiches). We get organised for our day out - morning doing walks, afternoon checking out Lake Argyle and having a swim.
Enjoy our day out - come back into Kununurra and fuel up, then buy a loaf of bread before going back to our caravan. Time to unpack from our outing, relax and have another cool down in the pool here. Tea tonight is cold silverside and salad, followed by Thermomix rice pudding. We've had our showers, so we tidy up and settle for the night.
Monday morning sees us up fairly early - just after 6.30am, have our breakfast, tidy up and get ready to go out for most of the day. We're going to have a look about Wyndham. Head off just after 8am.
After we return from being out and about, we do a small grocery shop at Coles, then head back to our caravan to unpack from the day out. Swim time next, great to relax in the pool. Get chatting with others, one young woman has just done the same tour we've got booked for Horizontal Falls - totally awesome she tells us, her and her partner had the most 'magic' time. Yep we're excited! Another lady (our age, maybe older..) Kathryn from Kyneton, travelling by herself (ute and caravan) - a nurse who does bloods (takes blood - lobot) enjoyed a nice chat. Back to our caravan, time for showers. Then tea, heat up leftovers - silverside, vegetables and mustard sauce and Roger does some airfryer potato chips to go with as well. Finish off the previous night's creamed rice. Relaxing before clean up. Have cuppas, do dishes, relax until bedtime.
Well it rained overnight so we get up (6.30am) to quite a change in weather! Today's highest expected temp is 26° - compared to 40° yesterday, I end up wearing trackies and long sleeve top today. We're having a day around camp today... We have a cook up breakfast, bacon and eggs on toast with relish, avocado, tomato, cooked mushrooms and topped with goats cheese YUM. I strip and change our bedding, Roger cleans and washes our floor. I get 2 loads of washing happening $4 a load, while Roger continues cleaning bits and pieces of the caravan. He has packed away our awning - quite windy this morning. Once the washing is finished we get it hung out on the clothesline - going to be a slow drying day. Next we go for a walk about Kununurra shops - enjoy having a look about and getting a few odds and ends we're after. Do a small grocery shop in Coles, couldn't get dry ginger ale soft drink we were after (for mixer) - so I figure I'll go for another walk later and try the IGA supermarket. For now we're content to head back to our van for lunch. I cook up a couple of corn cobs on the BBQ - they're in their husks, which I peeled back and put butter and seasoning on the corn before recovering with their outer covering to cook them in. Get the outside quite dark (1/2hr on BBQ - turning).
Now we relax around camp, Roger reading, I work on getting our rates set up to pay via online banking. Then I go for another wander down the street. I go and post a card with a glasses holder brooch (I purchased this morning) to Lorraine Hunt for her 80th birthday. Next to IGA for the ginger ale, then to gift shop near Coles to purchase book 'The El Quatro Story' by Meg Hornabrook. Head back to our camp and have a relax before making tea in the Thermomix - a mince pasta, using a jar of Roger's pasta sauce. Roger has got our washing in, so I fold and put away. After tea Roger washes the dishes and goes for a shower. I write up our budget books then dry and put away dishes before bed. A bit disappointed this evening - at the end of our stay here and I've just discovered we have missed our chance to visit a local distillery 'Hoochery' - oh well hope I get the opportunity to do this on another trip this way.
Wednesday 18 Sept has us up early - thanks to Rog's alarm. 5.30am sees us having our breakfast, muesli and yoghurt for me, weetbix and toast for Roger, and getting ready to walk in the Bungle Bungles today - hence dressed in long sleeves, shorts and sturdy footwear (runners for me). We're tidied and packed up - driving out of Kununurra around 6.30am.
