    🌊 South Pacific Ocean
  • Brisbane, Australia

South Pacific Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We had such a great visit at Brisbane! Conor and Sam at the city and Janice, Dean, Dakota and Makayo in the mountains were so welcoming! We were shown the sites, dipped our feet in the ocean, and were fed such delicious food from the sourdough, to the oysters, flatbread, bbq'd chicken and so much more. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and we hope to be back some day to this paradise and to all these lovely people.

  • Apia, Samoa

Our tour took us to Vailele where we visited a church and then the family meeting house next door. These open walled house are where the family sleeps and meets for important discussions. The men cook in Samoa and we were shown how the fish was wrapped in palm leaves, and how tarot root and leaves were prepared for cooking over the umu, hot coals in the yard.
After a kava ceremony to welcome us, we received a speech from the chief and dances from the women. Lunch was served from the umu cooked food and was quite good.
We followed our cultural experience with a swim in the natural Puila cave pool. The cold waters were refreshing and the odd fish swam past, checking us out.
Back at the pier, we shopped at the stalls and walked into town a bit to buy pop and beer for our trip, returning to our ship 15 minutes before it sailed.

  • Dravuni Island, Fiji

We rode tender boats to get into Dravuni Island and found the beaches were lined with flat rocky shores. The waves were a bit choppy and strong so it pushed and pulled us around. It made it tricky getting in to and out of the water without falling.
We browsed the stalls of sarongs and fresh coconuts here and the lay under a palm tree for a bit. A $20, 25 minute massage seemed very short and not as good as our Mystery Island one.
I did meet a Brownie coming home from school. The kids wear their Scout or Girl Guide uniforms to school every Wednesday. Such friendly people.

  • Suma, Fiji

We traveled from Suma out into the country where we got into brightly coloured wooden boats and traveled another half hour up the river past waterfalls and fields with horses and cattle. We left our boats to walked up a cement pathway to a powerful waterfall plunging into a cold, clear pool where we got to swim. Most people thought it was too cold, but we loved it and stayed swimming until the last minute we could.
Back at the village we saw a kava ceremony, cultural singing and dancing and had lunch. I bought Doug a shirt and I got a tablecloth in traditional design before we returned to the ship.

  • Mystery Island, Vanuatu

Mystery Island, visited by Queen Elizabeth II, was a paradise that we reached by tender boats. We went drift snorkeling here to see all kinds of colourful fish and coral. We had a massage in a hut on the beach and shopped in the stalls surrounded by all colours of sarongs and "grass skirts".
This island was a mystery to the Japanese in WWII, because the allies had a grass air strip here and launched planes "out of nowhere". We saw this airport and it's air sick still flying.

  • Noumea, New Caledonia

We took a ferry from Noumea to Amedee Island where we went snorkeling. I had a white and black striped sea kite snake swim about 2 feet from me and as it passed, I slowly move backwards away from it. I pointed it out to Doug as it swam away. These snakes are 10 to 20 more venomous than a cobra, but luckily they're quite docile! We found several young green sea turtles munching on sea grass and just hung in the ocean, watching. Wonderful!

  • Sydney, Australia

Sydney is a beautiful port and the lights reflecting off the water in front of the Opera House we're spectacular! We got to watch a folkloric dance and learn about the indigenous people of this land. I noticed that some of the ways they bathed in smoke to cleanse and parts of their dances were very similar to our First Nation people.

  • Blue Mountains, Australia

Queen Elizabeth visited these mountains and we can see why. It's a beautiful area and there's an iconic rock formation called the three sisters. It made me think about our three daughters and all the joy they've brought into our lives.
We drove over to a cable car and funicular area where we explored deeper into the valley, and then I hugged my new creature friend goodbye before our 90 minute drive back to Sydney.

  • Featherdale Wildlife Park

Doug and I didn't have nearly enough time at this wildlife sanctuary. We got our picture taken with a Koala, and we saw kangaroos, wallabies, cassowary birds, and many more exotic animals. The dingos and Tasmanian devils were sleeping in their burrows so we missed seeing them, but there were many photos of them to study.

  • At sea Raiatea to Auckland

As we left Raiatea, we were serenaded by ukelele music and surrounded by beautiful flowers.
And during our 5 sea days that followed, we dressed up for a formal night, played Mah Jong, exercised and enjoyed great entertainment shows. We had singers, musicians and even a sand artist.
And then, Doug's birthday arrived. He was served a special birthday cake by singing waiters and I think he enjoyed his special day.

  • Raiatea & Taha'a

From our port in Raiatea we boarded a small boat and set out across the crystal clear waters for the island of Taha'a, where we boarded 4 x 4 trucks and headed to a vanilla plantation. We learned about the growing and processing of vanilla beans and we bought a bottle of vanilla extract to bring home.
Next we visited a pearl farm where we were shown how they slightly open the oyster and insert a round piece of shell from Mississippi into the gonad of this animal to grow a pearl. Beside the shell, they also insert a tiny piece of coloured oyster shell and in 18 months, they will harvest a pearl. This can be repeated 5 times per oyster.
In the shop, beautiful pearls we're on sale, but most were outside my price range.
We had fresh fruit at a viewpoint overlooking the bay and were taught the haka dance. Our tour finished with snorkeling in this beautiful tourquoise ocean where parrot fish and others caught our eye.

Moorea is only 17 kilometers from Papeete, and many people take the daily ferry between the two islands for work or to visit different beaches. At the port, we saw an octagonal church before heading for our island drive. There is more white sand to this island and it is surrounded by a coral reef making the waters crystal clear and bright turquoise. The centre of the island is dominated by mountains covered in lush jungles. Fish and fruit are abundant here and many people set up roadside stands to sell their fresh and dried fruit.

  • Papeete (Tahiti)

Our guide, Noelle, kept telling us that we are in paradise, and it seemed like we were with turquoise waters, lush foliage and flowers everywhere. We visited a museum showing the history of French Polynesia and then drove around the island stopping at a Grotto, botanical gardens, an ancient temple and even a lighthouse built back in the days of Captain Cook. Surfers were riding waves, and children were splashing in the ocean at the black sand beach nearby.

  • At sea from Hawaii to Tahiti

We've spent our 5 days at sea playing Mah Jong, a new dice game and a new card game. We've also continued our ukelele lessons and on March 25th, we performed a ukelele concert complete with hula dancers for our fellow cruise passengers. Our friends, Gail and Nelson, gave me an orchid lei, which was very special. Good food and great entertainment have rounded out our days as we steam towards Papeete, French Polynesia.

  • Kauai, Hawaii

Our port at Maui got cancelled due to high winds that created dangerous docking conditions, but we did get to visit Kauai. We visited the Wemaia Canyon which is lush, green and amazing. Next we got to see the Spouting Horn, a lava tube that erupts in a spray of sea water when the waves crash into the shore. Legend says that a dragon type creature chased a warrior into the lava tube and got stuck there. The Spouting water is her frustration at being trapped there still.
After lunch we traveled to Fern Grotto by river boat. We were serenaded by a Hawaiian singer and entertained by a Hula dancer, both on the boat and at the grotto. And if course we saw some Hawaiian chickens everywhere we went.

  • Pearl Harbour, Honolulu

The USS Missouri was an interesting place to visit, from the iconic "sailor kissing the nurse" statue to the huge artillery guns that had a range of 20 miles. The sailors that lived and worked here had very tight quarters as they battled in WWII, and the deck is famous for being the site where this war finally ended with the Allies, including Canada, signing to have peace with Japan.

  • First 5 Days at Sea

North Pacific Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Our first five days of this trip have been at sea, crossing from Los Angeles to Hawaii. We have spent our days walking or going to the gym, playing Mah Jong, making Leis, learning the ukelele and watching lectures by our marine biologist, Becky. We celebrated Formal night and St. Patrick's Day, and we were entertained by a comedian, a singing duo, a magician and a singing ventriloquist. Now we're ready for Hawaii!
