Went to the Uffizi Gallery and enjoyed a temporary Roman exhibition which was quite exciting and all the permanent works - a lot of which we can thank the Medici's for. You will find pictures of all the famous works on google in much higher resolution than I can capture so I have instead showcased some lesser known details I enjoyed. I hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed finding a little corner of the most packed sunset watching spot in Florence (the duomo was blocked by a tree where we were but we could see the rivers and the mountains which was glorious) and monching on an antipasto moment (note to self: bring a corkscrew).もっと詳しく

My legs hurt

Once again not many photos from me because my legs nearly fell off. The hills were almost as big as the pizza we had for lunch! I learned that I have quite a ways to go if I want to push six watts per kilo but I'm still pretty cool with my effort on a bike where only every second gear worked! I got my wish to drink some Chianti wine and it was in a castle at the top of a hill with a wonderful view ((: I also learnt the joys of descending on windy roads really fast (although not as fast as Alfred who beat a car). We finished the evening with a little picnic on a dam (?) in the river in Florence which was a peaceful juxtaposition to the chaos of the day. In all a wonderful day but I'm about to fall asleep for ~36 hours!もっと詳しく

Strade Bianche

We wanted to go to a winery today. But all the tours were all either too expensive or booked out until August. So instead we caught a bus and hired some bikes and ticked a big one off my (Alfred's) bucket list and rode around Tuscany. The ride and views were glorious, my apologies that the photos don't really do it justice.
Today we join the esteemed company of Pogacar, van Aert, van der Poel and Pidcock when we got off our bikes and walked because the road was too steep. (For those not in the cycling know they are the previous winners of the race Strade Bianche - named for the white gravel that is used on Tuscan back roads. And to explain the joke further, they do not have get off and walk - because they are much faster than we are).

Travelled from Florence to Venice on a bullet train but it wasn't going full speed :(

Our favourite Panini shop isn't open on Saturdays - so we went to the second best in Florence instead. Venice is very pretty and adds well to my growing collection of Kate walking down narrow streets photos. Also home to the best tiramisu we have demolished on this continent.もっと詳しく

Train bridge! (Florence -> Venice)

Arriving in Venice involved quite a long bridge (not a train on a ferry this time )): ). As alfred has already lamented, the panini place that changed his life was closed so we settled for one that was closer, open, and still very yummy! Once we got to Venice we checked into our rooms in the hostel and did a quick costume change before going out to explore, do some washing and people watching. We had a genius invention for dinner: take away pasta in a Chinese noodle style box 🤯 not a whole lot in particular to report but Venice is beautiful although some of that is slightly removed by the sheer volume of people. Today, Alfred proved himself as a true feminist - when they told him his board shorts were too short to enter St Mark's basilica and I'm that moment he truly understood women's suffrage. He bravely shuffled his shorts down, risking them falling off altogether and we collectively pondered how on earth this was more respectful 🙃 The inside was pretty cool with heaps of Byzantine mosaics, proving itself as more worth the wait than the Duomo in Florence. Other than St Mark's we explored the canals and a bookstore where they keep their stock in boats and baths because of how often the city floods!もっと詳しく

We did the cultural thing today, which involved a Rick Steve walk of Saint Mark's Square and a trip into St Mark's cathedral. Which was a "cacophony of architectural styles" also known as a hot mess. But it was very nice to look at.
Inside the cathedral was:
- excellent mosaics
- average mosaics
- weird Catholic stuff
- odd Greek Orthodox stuff
- some horses that Nero stole from the Greeks, which were then taken by Constatine, which were then taken by the Venetians when they were "helping" the crusade and accidentally ended up with their allies things. The horses were then taken again by Napoleon, but the French eventually gave them back to be "in their rightful place".

Determined to make the most of our 1 day ferry pass, we went island hopping to Murano and Burano! We accidentally got a free glass blowing demonstration in Murano because we were a tiny bit late and then they were so keen to get us all into the show room they forgot to charge us so big win! Alfred struggled in the showroom as the €40,000 euro chandeliers were hung at head/hair height 😳 we managed to escape without smashing anything valuable though 🤠 Next up we popped across to Burano where all the houses are painted the brightest colours! It was super pretty and we had fun pretending we were in a Wes Anderson movie while we wondered around. We popped home on the ferry and took some pizzas and Bellini to the edge of the island to see the sun go down over the water. Finally, we used the last of our ferry pass to cruise up the Grand Canal to St Mark's Square again to listen to the orchestras - we arrived to find that it was high tide/global warming is faster than we thought, and the place was flooded which was quite a surreal experience but glorious nonetheless.もっと詳しく

B-Day (we missed you Bailey)

Reunited with Bailey! We spent the day exploring Ljubljana including the triple bridge (which is really just 3 bridges next to each other but apparently it's a feat of architecture), the riverside, an army barracks that the youth fought to keep as a street art and cultural centre when it was decommissioned, and a short photo stop at every billboard with a cyclist (looking at you @Pog and @Rog) on it in the entire city. The city feels more like a big town than a capital city - lots of cycling infrastructure and greenery and a much slower pace than a lot of the cities we have been to so far. We also stopped off at the market where apparently the president comes to do his grocery shopping 🤠 we might have met him but we didn't really know what we were looking for hahaもっと詳しく

A day exploring Ljubljana (pronounced how it is spelled), reunited with Bailey. At the behest of 3 different recommendations we tried horse burgers for lunch - they were alright, don't see why you wouldn't just eat a cow. To lake bled!

Our day started with our Airbnb host offering us traditional Slovenian plum liquor shots at 10:30am. After telling us all the benefits that having just 1 and only 1 shot per day can give you, he ignored our polite protests and we had 2 drinks 🙃 after that we caught a short (although not as short as Bailey's) bus to Bled! The lake is stunning and I am feeling very happy to be back out in nature, or at least more nature than most of the cities we have been in recently. We went for a swim in the rain and jumped off the Slovenian Olympic rowing course landings. The water is so fresh that none of us had any kind of buoyancy - the complete opposite of the Mediterranean in which I could float upright and keep my head above the water without moving. We got quite convincingly caught in the rain and sought refuge in a burger place for dinner before I crushed everyone at foosball 💪もっと詳しく

Having digested the horse burgers, we were then affronted by our airbnb host, who made us do plum brandy shots as we tried to check out. His neighbour walks down to the garden every day for a shot, and she's 95. One shot a day has excellent effects on health, he assured us - so we did 2. Drowning in the air

Bled received 70mm of rain in 1 day. According to the matron of Bailey's hostel, it hasn't been this bad since the 1930s which is not great for the place we planned to go to solely to have a swim 😔 but that's okay! We went on intermittent adventures between (and during) the downpour. We spent the morning doing some uni at a very nice library before reconvening with Bailey for a pizza lunch and a visit to Bled castle. The castle was hosting a wedding and also an exhibition about Rikli the Swiss pseudo scientist who started tourism in bled and made a name for himself by forcing rich people to diet for a fee in the 1800s. After trying bled cake and a free wine tasting we then returned to our hostel to make some friends to pass the rest of the rainy day. We ended up making a communal dinner with our new friends (ft. 1kg of dry pasta) and went out for a boogie with themもっと詳しく

Rikli World

Arnold "rickle" Rikli was a Swiss dye factory owner, who came to Bled in the 1850s to fix a bout of illness (read: diarrhea). He then discovered the magical healing properties of rest and relaxation and became a naturpath instead, setting up a hotel in the 1890s to cure clients of the diseases of civilisation. His remedies included vegetarian diet, sobriety and perineum sunning. Tourism in Bled only took off when people were kicked out of Rikli World, but didn't want to leave Bled - so the town opened hotels for them.

I guess we're just this damp now

We went for a walk around the lake which turned into an accidental mountain hike. The lookout point looked very close on the map but that's because it goes straight up - we also might have followed the "path" left by water draining down the mountain rather than an actual hiking trail - unsure. The views at the top looked like all the postcards and we also found the real path, which was perhaps more dodgy than our route up (see vertical stairs picture). We stopped off at the hostel for some Classic Alfred Toasties which were the envy of the whole hostel before going for one last bled cake and a final swim in the lake (and the rain) with some of our British pals. We were all too happy being dry to really lead the charge of going anywhere in the evening so after a quick beer/cider run we just commandeered the common room and a deck of cards and enjoyed our last hostel night for the trip ((:もっと詳しく

A bus-y day

We spent all day on 2 busses from Slovenia to Croatia. Not much to report but our apartment here is the most spacious we've had for a long while ((: had maybe the best falafel wrap ever for lunch and Greek food for dinner. Zagreb!

We wondered the streets of Zagreb and saw some of the main sights. I imagine this is a bit like what it's like to visit Melbourne for a couple of days - the sites are a bit rogue but the city has a very lovely feel. We went to the Museum of Broken Relationships which is more of a crowd-sourced art installation of a collection of items that are symbolic of past relationships. Highlights included a record, an exercise bike and a parachute harness and the low light was a 27 year old scab 🤢. We also followed a scale model of the solar system for a few planets (not as good as the York one), walked through an old bomb shelter from the Yugoslav war and climbed up to the top of the city to hear the cannon fire at 12:00. Alfred also cooked dinner. It was an experience for all those involved but he gets +10 points for perseverance and we love him very much.もっと詳しく

Today we explored Zagreb and saw the Dolac Market, the funicular and the highlight: the museum of broken relationships. Where people send in things that remind them of broken relationships, some of it is really sweet, some of its funny and some of it is just messed up like the lady that had kept a scab from her partner (not pictured).

Also in the old convent there is a cannon that gets shot at 12pm everyday and gives everyone a big shock.もっと詳しく

Zagreb to Korenica

We caught the bus from Zagreb to Korenica, these Eastern Europeans drive a mean bus - would recommend 👍. Korenica is a lovely town in the mountains. Our air bnb has a view of hillsides in both directions, and we can see the Bosnian border in the east.
Dinner was traditional Croatian food, everything edible cooked on a grill.
Only other notable thing that happened was me studying in the park, because the university library had been audited :(もっと詳しく

Plitvice? More like Plit-nice 👌

The main reason for our stay in Korenica was to visit the Plitvice Lakes National Park. It's a very bizarre National Park with weird train/bus hybrid vehicles that drive you to the beginning of different loop walks. The park itself was amazing and we got there as soon as it opened to try and beat the crowds which sort of worked...? We didn't appreciate how much it had worked until we got to the Veliki Slap (Big Waterfall) which is sort of the main attraction and some people will just bus out, see that and leave. There was a queue down the trail to get around the corner to see it and it somewhat ruined the immersion in nature but the hike back around to our starting point helped to fix that. We met up with one of our friends from Bled and her French friend for the second half of our hike which was a bit of fun. The pictures don't really do it justice but we tried! In the afternoon we had a massive nap and then reconvened for a beverage in the outdoor area out the back of our Airbnb and cooked a very basic pasta dinner (that was enhanced by the wine which is sold by the litre for €2.30). Plitvice Lakes

The lakes were very lovely. As with all national parks on this continent the management was confusing.
Each lake was a different shade of turquoise which made wondering around quite exciting. Also everything that fell in the lake ended up being calcified which looked a bit eerie.もっと詳しく

Most of today was spent on perhaps the boujeest bus ride we have yet to take - it resembled a train far more than a bus. Also, two bus hobos had a punch on about 20 minutes from our final destination and got kicked off. Excellent entertainment. Once we arrived, Alfred did his quarter-sem test and got a big fat 90% - he's very clever 🤓 Meanwhile I went to explore the old town so as not to disturb the test-taking.
