  • Mount Rainier

    12 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Things were a bit warmer this morning, so after a leisurely breakfast we headed back up the mountain.

Our first stop was at the entrance to the closed loop road. We parked up and set off walking along the tarmac with snow along the road edges. The sun was shining and the sky was blue.

Once we returned to the car, we drove up to Paradise and splerged on coffee and a treat (pretzels and hummus for me 😉).

On the way down we stopped at the twin firs 🌲 walk way. Well, when they warned about ice axes we should have listened 🤣. The walk started well, along a normal type of track. Then we crossed the bridge over the top of the waterfall and things changed. Snow ❄️, more snow ❄️, deep, soft snow ❄️. We persevered for a while but once we hit a large snow field in full sun, there was no choice but to sink or turn back. So turn back we did. After a few slips, sinks and slides we made it back to the bridge and, soggy footed, back to the car.

We stopped At Longmires for lunch, which was average. After lunch, we did the meadow loop again and saw a deer.

We headed out of the park and to Ashford, filling up with petrol. By now it was hot, the car was showing 80°!

It was time to return to the cabin and start to prepare for moving on tomorrow.

  • A long drive

    13 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

An early start, 4.30am. Glad to see I’m getting back to normal. After a few coffees, breakfast and a bit of packing, we headed away from Mount Rainier in the direction of Tacoma. Somewhere between Tacoma and Olympia, we stopped at Walmart (fast becoming a favourite) before continuing north around the Olympic peninsula.

Everything reminded me of the coromandel, little seaside towns, single lane roads, traffic…

Getting fairly desperate, we stopped for lunch at a nice little picnic area along lake pleasant. Cheese and coleslaw wraps with coffee for lunch.

Just another half an hour drive and we reach our campground. 3 rivers resort is a wooded area with RVs and is in our tent.

Rialto beach is a few miles away, it’s a pebble beach and the sun is hot so we don’t stay too long. Plus, it’s Saturday and busy, maybe we’ll come back on Monday?

We return to the campground for dinner and a warm evening.

  • Olympic National Park

    14 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

An early morning start with showers and coffee before anyone else was awake. We headed towards Hoh Rainforest, about an hour’s drive from the campground, at 7am.

Once there, we made our porridge and then set out on 2 trails, The Hall of Mosses and The Spruce Trail. These wound their way through the rainforest with lots of interesting plants and a few animals.

After another hour’s drive we reached Sol Duc and stopped at the Salmon leap. We saw 1 trout trying to leap up the falls.

Continuing along the road, we stopped at the Sol Duc falls and walked along the trail, with everyone else!

On our way back we stopped in Forks and saw some ‘interesting’ Twilight’ collections. By now it was really hot, over 90°, so reading that this is the wettest place in the US doesn’t really fit with what we are experiencing 🥵. No complaints though.

When we got back to the campground we had a late lunch from the cafe and then mooched around camp.

  • A Beach Day 😂🤣

    15 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today was all about the beaches. No, not the 🏖️. More the pebble, mist, wind and ocean swell beaches.

We drove south along 101 until we reached South beach and then spent time at each beach, observing wildlife and relaxing. We stopped at Beach 4, 3, Kalaloch, 1 and Ruby. We saw a bald eagle 🦅 and a few seabirds.

We continued to Rialto beach and cooked up lunch before sitting on the beach for beach for a while watching the seals and birds. We walked through the car park to the river and we saw otters 🦦. River otters. We watched them, and the bald eagles, for a while before calling in a day (cold and foggy).

  • Another driving day

    16 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

A leisurely start, packing up the campsite before moving on. We made it at least 8 miles back stopping for breakfast at a diner. Crispy bacon and unlimited coffee ☕️, yummy 😋.

Then a 3 hour drive to Olympia. We arrived at our treat hotel 🏨 and the receptionist seemed to think we were too early (12.30pm). No words needed, just a slight teacher look 👀 and she handed over the keys 🤣🤣🤣.

We’d booked a room with direct pool access, so we could cook outside and relax by the pool in the unseasonably hot weather. Pool closed! They weren’t expecting sun either 🧐. Never mind. We still have an outdoor area.

After an attempt at repacking ready for the ferry, we drove to the shops. We got a few essentials, and none essentials ( cheese 🧀 and crackers).

We the retuned to the hotel for an evening of relative comfort.

This morning we headed to Nisqually wildlife refuge. We paid our $3 entrance fees and went for a walk. It was much like walking around Old Moor, but different birds (and not very many).

After lunch we went to Olympia and had a walk along the lake front. It’s interesting, the historic centre is the administrative district. If you want shops, you have to go to West Olympia. West Olympia was much busier.Meer informatie

  • North to Bellingham

    18 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

An early start to pack the chaos. I eventually got it down to 6 bags and only left a few things behind. Never mind 🤷‍♀️

The check out was poor and prompted a Tripadvisor review but the problem was resolved.

An hour’s drive back to SEATAC and a simple car rental return. We hopped on the shuttle transfer bus and get dropped off at the shuttler bus stop with time to spare.

The Bellair Shuttler is on time and we get a bonus trip through downtown Seattle. It doesn’t look so bad in the sunshine.

We then hit the I5 and 2 hours later we’re at our destination, The Four Points by Sheraton. A last minute hotel change yesterday means we just checked in and didn’t have to get a taxi onwards. That was a good decision.

We had a delicious salad for lunch and then a walk around Fred Meyers. The size of supermarkets here has to be seen to be believed.

A steak sandwich for dinner and then bed.

  • Bellingham to board the Alaska Marine Hi

    19 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

A leisurely start as there’s nothing to do until later. Breakfast in the hotel and then Simon trying to sort out shipping some stuff home after Brooks Camp.

Delicious salad for lunch again and then a taxi to the ferry terminal. We joined the check in queue and got our boarding passes. After a little preboarding wait, we walked aboard. We handed over our bear spray and gas canisters and then got the lift to the 6th floor. Still another floor to go to the solarium! Once there we started sticking down the ground sheet with duct tape. Wow, it was 🥵! Eventually it was down, pole’s next and then the tent inner. We put the cover on and started sticking down like crazy.

When we decided it was done, and so were we, a quick break for water. Our audience was growing as more people boarded. We got the sleeping mats etc done. Now time for coffee. Simon went to find the hot water. Next find the bathrooms.

We hadn’t even left the port yet. By 5.45pm we were getting hungry so I made some noodles. 6pm we sailed away eating noodles 🍜. We stood on deck watching the scenery and wildlife, some dolphins 🐬 for a while.

We then got dinner for the cafeteria before watching the sunset. A quick drink in the cocktail lounge and then bed.

19 mei 2023, Coastal Waters Of Southeast Alaska And British Columbia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

An interesting night. After about an hour’s sleep, the wind was getting tea strong and knocking the tent about. It was rolling me back and forth. Not the boat, the tent.

Around midnight we decided to take the tent down and sleep on the deck. A good decision. It was quieter and no need to worry about the tent breaking.

After a few hours sleep we were up and looking at the scenery again. The problem with it coming light and 3am is that you wake up 3am and think it’s time to get up. I can see this being a problem/bonus going forward.

Eventually others started to wake up around us. We had showers, which were nice and warm. Then started trying to remove the remaining duct tape from the deck. Duct tape is very sticky.

After breakfast in the dining room, we sat on deck watching everything pass by. A slow and lazy day, several sea otters 🦦, a few dolphins 🐬 and a humpback 🐋. Maybe some orcas but nothing for sure.

The sun was shining most of the day and I have some rosy red cheeks to prove it. Sun screen tomorrow.

  • Ketchikan, Wragnell and Petersburg

    21 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

After a surprisingly good night’s sleep on the ferry floor we woke to a cold morning. Our first port of call on this voyage was Ketchikan, arriving before breakfast.

There were 2 big cruise ships in the cruise dock but the ferry terminal was north of town. Once docked, we walked off and headed to the supermarket. We got a few supplies and got back on board for breakfast. The ferry departed promptly. It’s not like a cruise where they check everyone is aboard. They leave when it’s time to leave and you need to be on the ship.

The voyage continued up the inside passage, the weather being variable with some rain as we neared Wragnell. We stayed on board at Wragnell. Next we headed for Petersburg through some narrow channels. No cruise ships come this way, they wouldn’t fit.

By early evening we docked in Petersburg. We walked off to stretch our legs but nothing to see as the dock is away from the town.

We set office north again, had our microwave dinner and then went to the bar for a couple of drinks before bed.

  • Day 3 of Living on the deck of a ferry

    22 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Another early, cold start but there’s a good coffee machine on board. The ferry heads through some tight narrows and sharp bends before arriving at Sitka.

We hear the ferry dock is 9 miles outside town. That’s disgusting, can’t walk 18 miles in 2 hours. Hooray, there’s a bus coming to pick everyone up. Ok it’s $10 per person return but sometimes you have to pay.

The bus drops us in the town and we mooch around the shops. These are shops for cruise ship passengers, tourist tat. Simon buys a Tshirt.

The shuttle gets us back to the ferry and we head off again, towards Juneau. It’s a beautiful day, clear skies and the sun is warm. The snow capped mountains are clear. There’s a few whales 🐋 and porpoises 🐬 to be seen.

By early evening we arrived in Juneau. Lots of peon and off the ferry but not us yet. Ours is the next stop, 3.15am. The alarm is set for 2.30am, hopefully we can pack everything away quickly and get somewhere warm.

  • Off at Haines

    23 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

A 2.30am alarm call to pack the bags and disembark. Fortunately, the guy from Haines Shuttle showed up at the dock for us. He collected a few other stragglers who didn’t have a ride. We paid him with a good tip, this was one of the most difficult things to get sorted and I’m grateful he did it for us.

After a tour of town, he dropped us at Oceanside campground and we pitched the tent, leaving our luggage scattered around in different places. We got into our sleeping bags and napped for a while.

Just before 7am I set off walking to the captain choice motel to collect our rental car. Another almost impossible task completed 👍.

Back at the campground we transferred the scattered luggage to the car and went for a shower. Then back on porridge for breakfast.

We drove along to the Chilkoot Lake reserve and then headed to to. We got food supplies and went to the campground clubhouse. We charged all the devices, changed some reservations, did some laundry and had lunch.

We then drove along the Chilkoot river before returning to town. We popped into t book shop and finally found The Milepost 😁

We went back to the reserve and made a coffee. I read my Milepost and Simon looked at nature.

Back to the campground to sit in the sun and relax with the mountain scenery.

Coffee and porridge to start the day. The German RVers were up early as well but I managed to get to the shower with no waiting.

We drove along Highway 7 using the Milepost to know what to see but the eagles have left and no bears 🐻. We turned a porcupine pass and suddenly there was a moose 🫎 right in the road. I stopped the car and we watched. She moved along and got into the lake. I pulled up and Simon leapt out with his camera. The moose swam across the lake and climbed out on the other side.

We continued the drive back to town but no more wildlife encounters. We stopped at a pull in just outside town for a sandwich before heading to the campground to do some device charging.

After unsuccessfully trying to sort out some hotel chaos in Anchorage, we drove out of the campground. I drove through a stop sign 🛑 that I didn’t see until too late. The police car coming down the hill did see. Flashing lights. I pulled over, hands on steering wheel. A short exchange later and showed him my license and he let me go. 😅😇. Thank goodness for a New Zealand license I think.

We had a drive around and went back to the lake for a while. The weather started to change so not sure what we will do.

We spent the evening in the shared room, looking at the scenery and cooking dinner.

    25 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

After an attempt at a lie in, it was porridge and coffee again. There was a cruise ship in again today and people everywhere. It seems ok for them to walk all over the campground and be right by the tents. No one tried to stop them. As I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth, an Australian lady wondered in and started asking me questions. How did someone from the cruise boat get in the campground bathroom when there’s a security code to get inside? 2121 🤣

We walked to the tourist information and picked up some leaflets on walks to do. We then drove down a road we hadn’t been along yet. It led to a state park but the road surface inside the park was really rough (Namibia standard) and I didn’t want to trash the car tyres so we turned around

Instead we went to the end of Beach Road and walked through the forest for a few miles. It came out on the beach but it had started raining 🌧️.

Back in the car we headed for a picnic shelter and cooked up falafel wraps for lunch.

We then drove to the navel fort and walked around looking at the old buildings.

Then back to the campground for practical things such as laundry.

The rain really started coming down so we cooked up dinner and made some wet weather plans before the dash to the tent. Who designs a campground where the facilities are at the furthest point possible from the tent sites?

  • Wet Haines, AK

    26 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Well, the rain didn’t stop all night. In fact it just got heavier and colder. Ok, it’s Alaska, it’s what I expected but I was liking the clear skies and sunshine. Anyway, no lie in today. Up at 4am and trekking through the swamp that the tent area of the campground had become to reach the shelter of the common room.

Having parked the car outside the common room, it was easy to grab what we needed for a shower 🚿. The wind started to pick up so Simon battened down the hatches some more.

The weather wasn’t improving, so we headed to the bamboo room for breakfast and unlimited coffee.

Once I had drunk more coffee than I think they expected, we went back to check on the tent. Still there. We went for a drive around the water’s edge to look for wildlife.

We then went to visit the Bald Eagle Centre. We saw some eagles in captivity because of injuries and an owl. We looked at the native wildlife gallery, some interesting taxidermy 🤣. I think I saw the 3 bears 🐻 in there, the porcupines had had their quills removed for safety and the grizzly was smiling.

After a quick visit to the supermarket, we drove to the lake and cooked up some noodles for lunch.

We went back to the campground to start to sort things out for moving tomorrow. Simon returned to the common room to say the tent was not holding up, we need Ed to take it down and enact plan B. We just hadn’t made Plan B yet.

We wrestled all the contents of the tent to the car and then wrestled the tent down and into the car. We decided that the only option was to sleep in the back of the car. We inflated the sleeping pads, they didn’t fit. Ok. We decided to just use sleeping bags, uggh.

While everything was in the common room drying out, I went to fill up the car with petrol (after asking at the tourist information where to go). I popped into a motel and asked for a room but they only wanted to sell 3 nights, not 1. Back at the common room, I called a camp ground. No tents. It was looking very much like a night in the car. The problem was that it was Haines Beerfest and every room was full,

Simon said he was going to try the Halsingland Hotel. They have a room! Yay! We shoved everything into the car and drove across town to check in. We got a warm room with shower.

I decided to return the car early to save a walk across town tomorrow morning. We dropped it off and then went to a bar for a spruce beer.

We then went to the pizza place for dinner, but, alas, a 2 hour wait due to beerfest. Supermarket dinner in the hotel room it was.

Hopefully the wind will have died down by tomorrow so that the fast ferry is running again and we can get to Skagway.

  • Haines to Skagway

    27 mei 2023, Verenigde Staten

I had the luxury of coffee in bed this morning before packing up and catching our ‘taxi’, aka random lady that agreed to pick us up, to the ferry terminal. It was still pretty windy so we weren’t sure if it would turn up so there was a cheer when it appeared in the distance.

After the shell shocked cruise day trippers got off we went aboard, all 3 of us. Obviously not busy in this direction but full the other way. Around 10 am we docked in Skagway and our transfer was waiting for us. He drove us the short distance to the Westmark Hotel where every cruise boat passenger was trying to check in or out. We navigated around them and left our bags. We wandered around and had a coffee and booked a bank breaking trip for Tuesday.

We wandered around some more, found the supermarket and popped into a few shops. The wind was strong and cold so we went to the Red Onion for lunch. It was surprisingly tasty.

After lunch we returned to the hotel and checked in. In the room we did a few jobs and had some coffee. We then went out to get some food for an in room dinner.

Woken early by porters moving cruisers’ suitcases into the truck below the window. We went to a local cafe for coffee and breakfast and then packed our bags.

At 10am a shuttle from our next hotel arrived and took us half a mile down the road 😂🙄. We left our bags and went to the national park service museum. We listened to a talk about the women in their gold rush and then looked at the museum. It looked dreadful, an awful lot of hardship for little reward.

We then went for a walk to Smugglers Cove and sat by the beach for a while before it started raining.

We went to a brewery for lunch, I had a salmon salad. We then went to a quirky museum to see Soapy Smith’s collection of stuff.

Afterwards we walked to the hotel in the rain where we checked in. We then went to the laundromat only to find in was going to close in 10 minutes so we will have to come back tomorrow.

We nipped in the supermarket and got a few bits for dinner before going for a walking around a different part of town.

We watched some videos about the gold rush and had dinner in our room.

After a false start we managed to get coffee in bed and the downstairs for breakfast. No choice, rhubarb French toast with sausages. Extra sausages for me as Simon wasn’t going to eat them.

Then we had chores to do, laundry 🧺.

Once we were all clean and dry we set of walking to the gold stampeders cemetery. A 2 mile walk through Skagway and along the train tracks. We followed the track to Reid Falls as well.

The walk back to town was straight into the cold wind but interesting to see the houses around Skagway. We saw a few cruise groups coming in on their guided cycle like we did a few years ago.

After cheese sandwiches for lunch we went to the museum close by and saw some interesting items, including some baleen which was silky smooth to touch.

Later in the evening we went to the red onion for dinner. Once all the cruise ship parts are gone, town is really quiet.

After the surprise of finding scrambled egg and bacon in the box, we got our tickets and got on the train. The journey started at 7.45am and wound up the White Pass route. This was the first time in 4 years this across the border day trip has run. After a few hours we reached Bennett Lake, the end of the Chilkoot Trail. The train stopped and we walked around for 20 minutes before reboarding and continuing along the shoreline of the lake to Carcross. We arrived in Carcross around 12.30pm and had 30 minutes to look around.

We then boarded our bus and started the journey back to Skagway. The driver stopped at a few sites along the way and had us back in the hotel by 4pm.

Once the laundry was dry we packed our bags and checked out. We stopped at the supermarket to get something for dinner and then walked around town for a bit. However, 4 huge cruise ships in today made everything too busy so we returned to the subway and got some cheese and bread for lunch. We found a picnic table on the sun and munched our sandwiches with the occasional cruiser looking on 🤣.

At 1pm we got a lift to the ferry terminal and around 2pm we boarded the Hubbard to Juneau.

The voyage lasted around 7 hours and we arrived in Juneau at 9pm. A taxi met us at the ferry terminal (hooray!) and dropped us at Glacier Nalu campground ⛺️. We found our site and had the tent up by 10pm. After a little relaxation we climbed into the sleeping bags.

What a freezing cold night 🥶. Definitely the coldest so far and not a lot of sleep was had.

Around 6.30am, I gave up on sleeping and went to find coffee. I found a free coffee machine in the office and helped myself 🤗.

After breakfast and showers, we caught the bus into Juneau. 4 cruise ships 😩. The bus company wanted $45 each for return transport to the glacier. I phoned a car rental company instead. The guy came and collected us from the cruise dock and drove us all the way back to Auke Bay, where we had just come from. He then asked me for my license and insurance documents. Oh no! He couldn’t offer us insurance and I knew I couldn’t get any after the Haines debacle. No rental car. Fortunately, the guy dropped us at Mendallhall Glacier.

We spent some time at the glacier walking around and looking at Nugget Falls. Then the next hurdle. How would we get back with no transport? I saw an orange tourist bus and asked the driver to take us. He said $20 per person, we paid and got a ride back to the cruise ship dock where we started. A round trip for less than half price 😆.

We found a pub for lunch and had a tasty sandwich before catching the bus to Fred Meyers. We picked us a couple of things for dinner and caught another bus back to the campground.

We had some coffee (don’t think they realise what they’ve got into) and sat by the ‘campfire’ keeping warm and dry.

Macaroni cheese and veggies for dinner. I hope tonight is a bit warmer.

Up at 4am for our shuttle to the airport. All checked in but one of the bags was overweight so a repack was needed. We put the sandals in a different bag and all ok. The total weight stayed the same, just distributed differently.

The flight left for anchorage at 7.30am and we landed about 9am. The luggage made it and we picked up the rental car without too much trouble.

The same can’t be said for the bear spray if arranged to borrow. The address wasn’t right but a trip to REI and we bought some. We also stopped at Walmart and bought a supply of groceries.

We headed towards Soldotna, stopping in Girdwood for coffee and a sandwich. We reached Soldotna and bought some camping gas and Simon got binoculars.

The journey continued on to Homer but we stopped at an Orthodox Russian church with eagles and views over the Cook Inlet.

Another half hour and we reached Land’s End Resort, right at the end of Homer Spit. We had decided not to camp because of the wind forecast and the gusts as we entered the lobby confirmed the decision.
