  • Erskine Falls - Lorne

    17 Mart 2023, Avustralya

After a short stop at the visitor information center at 11:15am to pick up a map with all the walks in, I had to decide which walks I am doing. Because here are so many walks and waterfalls, I can walk on for a few days here easily.
Unfortunately the weather seems to get bad, is super cloudy now with grey rain clouds. Good i am going into the forest now.
First up was Erskine Falls. It was a 15 minute drive there from the visitor information center and just a short walk to the lookout. It's so much colder here! It was like 21 degrees in Lorne and here it's only 13!
Of course I was also walking all the stairs down to the base of the waterfall and it was so worth it!
But it was a steep way back up. Uh I still don't like it to walk steep stairs up. Should start to get used to it now, but nope..

  • Phantom Falls

    17 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Next up on my list was Phantom Falls. Had a problem to find a parking spot but could stand beside the road in the end. It was a lovely walk to the waterfall, passing some chilling kangaroos and then I even saw 3 yellow-tailed black cockatoos!
Just after that the track got really steep, I mean really really steep! Oh dear, I hate it. But I made it up that hill and also down again to the Phantom Falls.
Lovely little falls and beautiful place.
I was back at the car 1 hour later!
Wanted to do another walk to another waterfall from here, but the road is closed to I can't get there. That's how it is sometimes.

  • Sheoak Falls and Swallow Cave

    17 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Next up, a stop on the Great Ocean Road, was the walk to the Sheoak Falls and Swallow Cave.
Very nice up and down. My legs start to get tired so it's not getting easier.
Was deciding to go up to the Swallow Cave first but cave up at the first lookout. I could see the cave perfekt from here and also the rest of the track. Steep stairs uphill, all the way around and down to another platform. No thank you, not today! So I turned around and went down to the Sheoak Falls. That was a really nice place to stay for a short while. And then back on the track, up and down again.. WohoOkumaya devam et

  • Kenneth River

    17 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

For this stop I have been looking forward to some days already, as many people told me to go here to see Koalas! Kenneth River.
Well what shall I say, they closed the walks because of a controlled burn in the forest behind Kenneth River. Oh man... At least I saw some Rosellas and one Koala enjoying a meal high up in a tree.
This controlled burns are very important and hard to do. They have just a very short period of time to do them, when it's not to hot, dry or to wet. So the fire was started on Tuesday and as it's going to be a bad day tomorrow, hot, dry and super windy they were trying to get the fire as low and small as possible to have a better control over it tomorrow.
Good I asked, because they told me, the wind will be horrible tomorrow and I should not go in the forest after midday. And I have planned to spend the hot day in the forest 😬
I will go to the visitor information center in Apollo Bay and check with them later.

  • Cape Patton Lookout & Carisbrook Falls

    17 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

For the last kilometers to the campground in Apollo Bay I have two more stopps left. First up the Cape Patton Lookout. Just stopped for some fast photos and went to the Carisbrook Falls carpark.
Nice short walk up the hill, of coarse. But so worth it! Beautiful waterfall and valley I was walking through.
After that I went straight to the campground. Nice campground on the hill. Saw some cockatoos on the road up to the campground.
Had a shower and went to cook.
And after dinner I went to bed, tired after a long day in the road. But crazy, it was just like a little bit over 60km from Airleys Inlet to Apollo Bay..

Had some people snoring around me this night so I woke up quite a few times.

  • Marriners Lookout

    18 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

I woke up at 6 am from the wind. It's blowing like hell out there. The sky was full with dark clouds. To the warnings was good, I will not do so much today. Got up at 7:15 am to have breakfast. It's super warm already now. I was getting a little bit cold during the night and used my warm blanket over the sleeping bag but already at 6 am when I woke up I was feeling very warm.
I left the campground around 9 am to do some smaller walks before the weather gets really bad around lunchtime. It's already 24 degrees now!
First stop was Marriners Lookout. Steep walk up a hill, again..
If I would just get used to it..
Was meeting a dog at the carpark, saying hello to everyone and really happy about getting some cuddles. No one's knows who's dog this is, but we were guessing, she must living in one of those houses here. If she is still around when I come back, I will try to call the number on her collar.

But what a beautiful view over Apollo Bay from up there! Really worth ist the walk up.
Wind is okay still. But shit it's blowing a lot.

  • Maits Rest Rainforest Walk

    18 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

Next up was the Mairs Rest Rainforest Walk.
The drive here was challenging as it is super windy and there are smaller branches falling down from the trees all the time and a lot of stuff is laying on the road already.
Super cool walk through the rainforest. Really nice made with a lot of information. The wind is not so bad here. Feels mor protected.
Took me around 25 minutes for the walk and I was really enjoying it. It's also colder her then it was in Apollo Bay.

  • Cape Otway Lighthouse

    18 Mart 2023, Avustralya

The drive to the Cape Otway Lighthouse was mostly through forest. I tried to keep an eye open for Koalas but I had to focus some much on the road so I didn't see one. Shit ist blowing like hell.
I arrived at the Lighthouse around 11am.
I did the walk around the area and even walked up to the top of the lighthouse.
Up there it was blowing a lot, but down on the ground it was actually better, I thought. I was meeting a couple that is also staying at the Bimbi Park last night and this night and they said, the staff was sending everyone to Apollo day over the day, so my decision was final. I return to Apollo Bay and spent the day there. Better safe then sorry.
On the way back to Apollo Bay I had the feeling that the wind have been getting a little bit less, but the worst part was probably still in font of me.

  • Apollo Bay

    18 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

I found a place to park the car and first went down to the beach. Unfortunately there is almost no shadow and in the sun I don't want to sit, as I will not notice when I start to get burnt with all the wind. Left the beach after a while and was sitting beside my car in the shadow. It's not so warm anymore actually, just around 21 degrees and the wind ist fresh, so its actually almost to cold to sit in the shadow. I hade lunch around 2 pm and after that took a walk around the town and was reading a little bit and got pretty bored after a while. At 5:30pm i called the Bimbi Park staff and asked if it's safe to go there and they said it's fine, I can come. Finally!
So I went there, chose a spot for my tent, got set up, a shower and looked for some Koalas, but didn't find any. Had dinner and went to bed. I heard some really wired sounds, learnt later, that it's obviously the mating call from the Koalas 😅
When I went to the toilet around 11:45pm I saw a Koala moving around in the tree right beside my tent. Soo cute! Was just to dark to take a picture.

I woke up quite a few times this night, because the couple in the tent beside me were snoring like hell.. Both of them.. and so loud, that I even with earplugs I could here them very good 😬🙄
I woke up around 7:50am and had a walk around the area to see if I can finde some Koalas. I found two but so high up in this huge trees that it was impossible to take a good picture. But I saw them! 😊
After breakfast I got ready and left around 9:50am, first Stop was at the Castle Cove Lookout.
Very cloudy today and also just around 16 degrees.
No problem with the planes I have today.

  • Otway Fly Treetop Walk

    19 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Shortly before 11am I arrived at the Otway Fly Treetop Walk.
I had an hour time for it as I am going in the Zipline tour at 12:15pm 🤩
It's just 12 degrees here in the rainforest and it obviously has been raining here quite a bit but it's not raining now and that's all I wanted.
The walk is really cool as you get high up in the tree canopies. There are so many extremely tall trees here, totally amazing. I was back at the entrance at 11:50am and tried to but my bag and phone into a locker. But unfortunately the mashines didn't expect my card and also the staff had no clue why it's not working. So in the end, I went up to the carpark quickly, left my bag and phone in the trunk of the car and back down again to give my car keys to the staff at the front desk. And then it was already time for the safety briefing.
After that we got our gear and got "dressed" and then we were ready for a first test run.
And after that we were good to go and had to walk a bit to the start point.
Here another short briefing from Jack an Bazz, our guides and then we walked up on the first, 10m platform.
From here we made our way from platform to platform. We hade around 9 ziplines to complete and to hanging bridges. It was really cool and everyone had a lot of fun.
We were even pretty fast and complete the tour much faster than planed. Good for me, gives me more time for the rest of the day.
No photos, my phone was in the car, safe and they didn't take any photos. But it was a lot of fun.

  • Triplet Falls

    19 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

After the Zipline adventure I drove the 15 minutes to the carpark to the Triplet Falls.
I had to walk down many stairs and was already not looking forward to walk them back again 🙄😅
As I came to the first viewing platform a girl told me I should follow the little path beside the platform to get down to the river. Should be really beautiful.
So I did that, but damn it wasn't easy. Super steep and barely anything to hold onto. Was wondering how I am supposed to get up here again.
The river was really nice but I didn't stay here so long as I wanted someone to be around while I am climbing up, an there were two women that were just starting to climb up again after I came down.
It was tuff to climb up, but easier then expected, because I could hold onto the roots and that made it much easier.
But I was exhausted when I finally made up to the platform again.
From here I went up to two more platforms. Really cool waterfall! I really like it. Luckily it's not a return track, so I could continue and I had the feeling it was not so many stairs up as I walked down in the beginning. Probably it's because it was some flat parts in-between and not just stairs.

  • Hopetoun Falls

    19 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Next up was Hopetoun Falls. Short walk here, but many stairs to get down to the base of the waterfall. Beautiful, but I am tired for today. So no more walks.
I drove straight to Princetown where I will stay tonight. Nice and cheap campground. Could but my tent just where I want.
Have a couple from Austria as neighbors. We had a little talk when I was on my way to the campkitchen.
The campkitchen was busy but everyone is using the barbecue so it's no problem for me and my gas cooker. Started to talk to 2 Australian men and that continued when their wifes were showing up. So we were sitting together talking as 2 young German guys pop in and later on even 4 German girls. So we were quite many people having a lovely evening together.
And I forgot to say, there are kangaroos everywhere around us. Very many kangaroos!
So on the way back to my tent I was almost bumping into some of them. 😅
Unfortunately it got super windy in the evening and I was ending up sleeping almost not at all. Horrible night and that with a big day in front of me.
Hopefully I can go on a helicopter ride tomorrow 🤞

  • 12 Apostles Helicopters

    20 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

After a horrible night O tried to sleep a little bit bit longer. As there is not rush today, at least not in the morning. Got up at 8:30am, tired like hell but still excited for the day. I went and had breakfast and got company first from the German boys and a little later the German girls were showing up too.
So we were talking about traveling, our experience and that travelling now isn't the same as it was before covid. I have noticed it, but many other people also. Campground are more expensive, harder to find a free spot on short notice. I usually never book in advance, but this trip I have done that often, a day or two in advance.
I thought it's maybe just here like this, but obviously it's everywhere in Australia the same.
After breakfast I got ready, packed up and left the campground at 10:25am. Next to the 12 Apostles Helicopter 🤩
I asked if there is a chance to go on the 25 min flight all the way to the Bay of Islands anytime today. And the guy said, yes in about 20 minutes I think. Go to the toilet and I let you now when you come back. Okay, that was going fast 😳
So I went to the toilet in the visitor center and started to feel unwell. Super nervous and that was to much for my belly. Stopped at the car and sat down for 3 minutes, breezing and grabbing a chewing gum, and then I was ready to go.
We got life vests, some important instructions and then we rushed to the helicopter, got seated I got to sit in front and then the pilot, Dan showed up, got the heli ready, starting the engine and off we go! Even though it's so windy the flight was very smooth and I was not feeling bad at all! And not nervous anymore.
I was enjoying the flight really much. It was awesome!
What an experience and so worth it the money.
I was full of adrenaline when we arrived back at the center. Awesome trip!
Now I want to see all I saw from up there from the land 😉
Wonder how long it's going to take me, took just 10 minutes to fly to the Bay of Islands.

  • 12 Apostles

    20 Mart 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

    My adventure started at 11:35am.
First stop, the 12 Apostles! Super cool also when it's just 7 left. The rest have collapsed already but eventually some are sooner or later getting "born," from the main land. The whole coast is changing constantly due to wind, rain and the waves.
From here it is just a short walk back to Gibson Steps, so I decided to walk there.

Next one was just a short drive away. Also here a quite a few walks.
I started with the walk to the Thunder Cave.
    Pretty cool to see.
From here I continued to follow the track all the way to Broken Head.
Great view but it was blowing very cold out there.
I am constantly putting on or off cloth. Swetting, freezing, swetting, freezing.. annoying. But at least the sun is back and it's getting less clouds also!
Did a short turn down to the river but didn't finished the walk, want to safe the time for other stops.

The Arch is closed at the moment my next stop was the famous London Bridge. It's always just a few minutes to drive between all this stops totally crazy.
London Bridge was so cool. I walked to all three lookouts, of course.
You can't get down to the beach, because penguins live there and the beach is not open to the public.
