Lake Monowai

Lake Monowai was the next one on my list. Here I did only a short walk to a lookout as the Sandflys are so nasty around here 😳
Sandflys are horrible little black flys that are cutting up the skin to drink the blood, only the female Sandflys does that.
It really hurts and their bites are itching like hell afterward. They are worse than mosquitoes I can say. I hate them!

The walk to Lake Monowai was trough a nice forest with many mice 😳
I saw them everywhere and they were not really scared of me.
Horrible!

The Lake though is beautiful and I could take a short pause here before the Sandflys started to attack me again.Leer más

The last real stop on the way to Te Anau was at the Rakatu Wetlands.
This was actually the best stop for today as this is a really nice place to visit! The walk to the river was nice and easy until I had to climb over some fallen trees and a lot of branches. But that was actually fun and not to difficult at all. From the river, I had a nice view of the mountains around me.
I then also walked to the lookout point to get an nice view over the wetlands as well. I divided against the loop track from 2 hours as it was already pretty late and I still had a few km left to Te Anau.Leer más

Some more pictures I took on the way to Te Anau!

I arrived there around 6 pm and the first campground I stopped at was actually full already, what was not to bad, I didn’t really like it there, don’t know why just got the feeling, that it’s not right.
So I went to the Top 10 Campground and here I was lucky to get the last free spot for tonight.
Perfect!
So I used the rest of the evening to shower and cook and tried to go to bed early as I need to get up at 5 o’clock tomorrow morning 😳😬Leer más

The night was freezing cold. I woke up at 3.30 am freezing like hell. I fell asleep before I had been fixing my hot-water bottle 🙄
As I need to get up at 5 am anyway I didn't go up to fix one then. Just put on my hoodie and an extra pair of socks and tried to sleep a bit more.
To get out of bed at 5 o'clock was not easy I can say. It was soo cold, but I had to get up, get dressed and eat breakfast to be in time for my coach drive to Lake Manapouri.

At 6 o'clock I left the campground and was outside the Go Orange Shop at 6.05 am. If I was there already yesterday to figure out, where I can park my car over the day without a problem and the said, I should be there around 6 am, definitely my later than 6.15 for the check-in.

I was at least not the first one. A girl from Ireland was already there and two more was showing up at 6.15.
But no one from Go Orange 🤔
We were standing there waiting and freezing, it is only 3 degrees 🥶🥶
At 6.25 our coach was arriving so we could finally get out of the cold.
It was only a 20 min drive to Pearl Harbor in Manapouri, we picked up 6 more people from their motels on the way as well.

In Pearl Harbor, we only had to wait a few minutes until it was time to get on the boat that will take us over Lake Manapouri to the end of the West Arm.
This part of the trip is operated by Real Journeys as they are the only boat operator on Lake Manapouri.
The cruise took around 45 minutes. The closer we come to West Arm, the more clouds were appearing around the mountains.
I hope, they are disappearing again before we reach Doubtful Sound 🤞🏼
After leaving the boat we got split up in two groups on two different coaches.
The first coach to leave was the coach with the Kayakers and shortly after them, it was our turn. The bus drive took around 45 minutes and we got a lot of information from our driver Scott.Leer más

Doubtful Sound I

Shortly after 9 o’clock, we reached Doubtful Sound and our boat, the Tasman Explorer for our Doubtful Sound Cruise.
And what should I say, all the clouds are gone!!!! 🤩

It’s still pretty cold but the weather can’t be better!

We are only 41 people on the cruise today, plus our bus driver Scott and our skipper John-O.
So it’s a really nice small group and we have a lot of space on the boat to move around and get nice pictures.
Really nice!

Coffee, Tea, Cappuccino and Hot Chocolate are for free and everyone was straight getting a hot drink to warm up a little bit from inside!
After a short while, our skipper spotted some Bottlenose Dolphins!
They were pretty far away from us, playing around. In Doubtful Sound, boats are not allowed to approach the dolphins. There is a group of Bottlenose Dolphins living in the Sound ad they are protected. So we could only slow down, watch them playing around from a distance as hope they maybe gonna come a little bit closer. But they, unfortunately, did not. But we saw them 🤗

As the weather is so good we could drive out from the sound into the ocean and turn around there and go back on the other side of the island the is in front of the sound! They told us, that yesterday this was not possible because it was to rough out on the ocean.

So I really, really lucky to book the trip for today 😍🤗

While we were cruising back everyone was enjoying the scenery and as it was getting warmer and warmer it was really nice to stand outside in the top deck!
We saw some seals lying around on the rocks and one was playing around in the water, but all too far away for a nice picture.

And then we saw some more dolphins 😍
But also this time they where to far away to take a picture from them, but it's was so nice to watch them jump around and having a good time.

After 2 1/2 hours filled with awesome scenery and a lot of information we returned to the harbor and had to leave the boat and jump back onto the bus.
Scott promised us some nice photo stops on the way back as we are not so much in a hurry now.Leer más

On our way back Scott stopped a few times so we could take some pictures. Sometimes he was just passing by really slowly so we had to take the picture from inside the bus.

After arriving back in Te Anau around 3 pm I just had to fast buy some bread and fuel up, well I don’t need to fuel up actually, but there is no gas station on the way to Milford Sound and I really don’t want to get in trouble, so I fuel up just to be sure!

After that, I went out of Te Anau towards Milford Sound.
The first two pictures are from Lake Te Anau.
I just stopped there on the way to take a look around.

The next stop was at Lake Mistletoe for a short to the Lake. Nice place but I didn’t like that the last part of the track back to the carpark is beside the road 😳Leer más

The first two pictures are from the Eglinton Valley and the last pictures from the Mirror Lakes. They should be best to see in the morning because the light is perfect then I heard. So I will Stopp here again, maybe tomorrow morning or on Thursday.

From here it was only two kilometers to my campground for the next 2 nights, Knobs Flat!

A nice little place with a lot of birds around.

I was pretty tired when I came here, so I went for a shower first. Had to wait a while, here are only two showers for all campers so there where already a few people waiting. We used the time to talk about what we did the day and complain about the Sandflys that are pretty nasty here.
Horrible creatures! 🤬

After a nice shower, I was just cooking some pasta fast and talked with some of the other campers.
It’s many people from the UK here tonight.
So we had a nice chat and after that, I went straight to bed.

That was the time when I heard some Keas flying around the campground, but I was too tired to get up and try to see them. That I will do tomorrow!Leer más

Milford Sound I

It is an early morning today again 🙈😴
I had to get up at 6 o’clock today.
I want to be at the Milford Sound Harbour around 8 o’clock and it takes around an hour to drive there, without any stops on the way!
So e had a quick breakfast and was leaving the campground at 7 am.
There where a lot of low clouds hanging around the mountain around me and I got a little bit worried that the weather is not going to so good today. But it was nothing to worry about, as got clear and nice after a few kilometers of driving. 🤗
I can’t say how hard it was for me to not stop at all on the way to Milford Sound 🙈😂
The scenery is sooo amazing here 🤩

I passed the free carpark because there was no sign but I turned around and drove back because I don’t want to pay 10$ per hour!!!! for parking!
That’s obviously new since this summer!
Totally crazy!
That’s why I wanted to be early enough there to make sure to get a place at the free carpark! As this one is a little further away from the terminal there is a free Shuttle provided.
It was still quite many parking places free when I arrived so it was worth it to be here so early! Nice!

I had to wait around 5-10 minutes for the Shuttle to arrive, the Sandflys here are horrible! Nasty little creatures. Who needs them?!
I checked in to my Cruise with Mitre Peak at 8.05.
Pretty early but I can better wait here a while than stress around to get here and find a free carpark.
Boarding was at 8.45 am and I was pleased to see, that our boat is the smallest one of all the boats that are here, at least half as small as the others some are really big.
This time the boat is quite full, but not booked out so it’s not too many people around and luckily also just a few people from Asia. The big group was I saw earlier was luckily booked on the other boat.
At 8.55 we left the Harbour for our 2-hour cruise.Leer más

Milford Sound II

The weather is perfect again today and I am so happy that I am so lucky. It is also not so cold today so I could spend the whole cruise outside on the upper deck.
It’s not really warm, but with a jacket, it’s nice to sit there in the sun and enjoy the view.

Milford Sound is much shorter than Doubtful Sound and also not so wild, I think. It is definitely more commercial here, as there are so many tour operators here.
Mitre Peak is the operetor with the smallest boat but the longest cruise. When we left Milford Sound into the Tasman Sea we saw that all the other boats were turning around and going back inside the Sound while we were really leaving the Sound and was passing a little bit along the coastline!
We saw a small cave there as well.
Our skipper is all the time driving really close up to some special parts of the Sound. There is, for example, the Copper Point, which is named after his very high deposits of copper. You could see the lines of copper in the rock.
He also was driving really close to all the small waterfalls we saw on the way. As the weather has been so good the last couple of days they are pretty small now, if it’s raining they should get really impressive with a lot of water falling down. To be honest, I prefer good weather with smaller waterfalls 😉Leer más

On the way back we cruised along the other side of the Sound so we good get a good view of both sides of Milford Sound!

We saw some fur seals as well. A few were laying on a rock but around 10 or maybe, even more, were in the water playing around. Or maybe not playing, the deckhand told us, that this is juveniles, kicked out from their colony so they come here to get adults. They have actually a quite bad digestive tract that’s why they are eating some stones and then they are rolling around on the water, like these ones did, to move the stones around to break up their meal so it’s easier for them. Pretty clever and now I know, that they are not playing around.Leer más

We then went to Sterling Falls ( 2. picture) where the boats are actually able to drive into the waterfall. Some people are so crazy to stand there in front of the boat and under the waterfall 🙈😂
I am not doing this!
But I strayed on the upper deck and got wet as well as the water is splashing around so much! It was actually really cool!

We then went into Harrison Cove where some people left the boat who had booked a tour in the Underwater Observatory.
From here you have a really nice view to Mount Pembroke, one of the highest mountains in the fiord at 2025m and the last remaining glacier visible from Milford Sound.
This is a tenant of the glacier which once carved its way through the fiord. It is also the water source for Stirling Falls.

Mitre Peak, 1692m high, is one of the highest mountains in the world that raise directly from the ocean floor. It is also called bishop’s mitre or head-dress, as it often has a cloud around its top, you can see on the 3. picture. He dressed up for us on the way back 😉

And then we were already almost back at the terminal.
We could get a nice view of the Bowen Falls as we were driving into the Harbour.

It was a really nice your and I was definitely deciding for the right operator. Unfortunately, there were no dolphins around today, but our skipper said, that already yesterday they didn't see any dolphins. That's how it is!

Arriving at the terminal showed me, why it was a good decision to do the first your in the morning, it was so full now, so many buses and so many people everywhere! 😳
I was so happy that I could leave now!
I had to wait around 10 minutes for the shuttle back to my car and then I was leaving Milford Sound with the plan to stop as often as possible!Leer más

The Chasm

The first small walk was at The Chasm.
I saw a Kea jumping over the carpark when I drove onto it but unfortunately, the Kea was already gone until I had parked the car. 😕
I don't have luck with them. I did not see a single Kea until now and there are supposed to be so many here.

Well, I will keep on trying to find one.

The Chasm is really cool, it's a waterfall through amazing shaped rocks. I can't really describe it.

It took a few more stops on the way. Also at Monkeys Creek where you should usually see a lot of Keas, not a single one while I was there. 😕
Still, the scenery is incredible also without a Kea!

Falls Creek

The next short walk for me was more a climb. You can see the Falls Creek from a carpark beside the road but you can also climb up the hill for like 20 min to come to the upper part of the waterfall. If I haven't seen the couple that was going up there I would not do the track! It's was extremely steep, muddy and not a real track at all to be honest.
But so I knew I am not alone on the track so somebody could help me is something should happen.
It was a tuff climb but so worth it!
The way down was almost worse than up 🙈
But I got up and down without any problems.

As the next point on my to-do list, I had the walk to Lake Marian. I also started the walk but was not feeling good at all already from the beginning. And got pretty bad after around 20 min so that I was turning around, going back to my car and driving straight back to the campground. Absolutely the right decision as I got really bad when I arrived at the campground.
So I had a calm afternoon, luckily I got better pretty fast again and didn’t felt bad anymore through out the rest of the day!
I will give the Lake Marian another try tomorrow.Leer más

Key Summit Track I

Today I feel really good again so I will do some walks here before I leave the Milford Sound area.
At first, I had a really good breakfast together with a couple from the Netherlands and one couple from France. And there were a lot of Keas around again, but we mostly heard them, they just passed flying once.

The first walk for today is the Key Summit Track. The first part of the track is actually a part of the Routeburn Track, one of the great walks in New Zealand. As they are so expensive here and also booked out I can’t do them, even though I would love to do especially the Routeburn Track.
But at least I can walk a part of it at this end of the track. The track is really nice and easy to walk on, the climb up on the hill is also not too bad, actually, I thought it was quite easy, but I noticed on the way back, that it was not so easy for many other people 🙈😬
I think I am in good shape now 💪🏼

I reached the top of Key Summit after 1 hour and 5 minutes.
Up there are some wetlands, which is pretty cool to see so far up on a mountain, it’s around 1800m above sea level.
From here I had a nice view of the sourdough ding mountains!
Really nice.

The walk back was also nice a deadly so I finished the whole track in 2 hours and 10 minutes.
I felt very energetic as I arrived at the carpark so I drove straight away to my next walking track for today 😊😉Leer más

I took a small break at the car park to eat a piece of bread with peanut butter and some peaches and then I started the walk up to Lake Marian, the one I started yesterday when I had to turn around.
Good that I did the Key Summit Track first! This is not a walk, it's more a climb up the hill😳
It was a really tuff track or I better call it a path because was not a track at all.
To climb up and around rocks like a goat in the mountains 🙈😂
Around halfway up I was hitting my knee on a rock a d that was not helpful for the rest of the track.
It got pretty blue quite fast 😬
But it wasn’t too bad so I could keep ongoing.

After 1 1/2 hours, I was finally reaching Lake Marian and the view was stunning!! It was so worth it to climb up all the way.Leer más

I think I stayed here for like 20 minutes or so, just relaxing the muscles, eating a little bit and enjoying the view. Then it was time to get back to my car again, I can’t say I was looking forward to walking back all the way 🙈😂

It was going surprisingly good on the way back. In total, the Track took me 2 hours and 40 minutes plus the 20 minutes break at the lake. Not so bad actually.
I can’t say I felt energetic when I arrived at the carbs I now 🙈😂

Now it was time to get back to civilization.
I went to Manapouri where I will stay one night.
I found a nice campground with a lot of space and stuff a German couple there with whom I spend the whole evening together.Leer más
