We thought we would share a bit of Edward’s first holiday with you. Our usual destination of Seahouses, but something is a little different this time. Read more

    Edward's Longest Journey

    Edward was very excited this morning and woke us up at 6am. Of course this is not exceptional and is his usual get-up time. Despite the early start it was 11:15 before we left home having loaded the car (and roof box) and found space for Edward.

    The first part of the journey as far as Washington services, where we stopped for lunch, was pretty good with no hold-ups. It was a new experience for us, feeding Edward in the car park of a services, but I’m sure we will get the hang of that! The traffic around Newcastle and Morpeth was slow but thankfully Edward was very calm and slept most of the way. We arrived at the caravan around 15:00 and Andrew unpacked the car while Edward had a snack.

    Later in the afternoon we all set off for a walk around Seahouses (Edward in the sling). We were a little disappointed to find the harbour wall closed off due to maintenance work. One of Sarah and Andrew’s favourite things is to walk to the end and look out to sea. The maintenance work is set to last 6 months and cost £3million!

    Edward slept as well as he does at home, which was somewhat of a relief. Once again he woke us up around 6am, quite a departure from our usual Willerby lie-ins.

    Andrew converted the pram into buggy mode and we set off into Seahouses to do some shopping. Seahouses was, to use a phrase from Sarah’s side of the family, ‘jumping’. It seemed the whole world decided to make a trip to the seaside today. Unfortunately we were unable to get all the supplies we needed in town so after lunch we set off to the nearest big supermarket, Sainsbury’s in Alnwick. We accomplished another first by parking in a parent and child bay!

    We made our way back to Seahouses, Andrew enjoying the drive in the glorious sunshine, and fought our way through the town back to the caravan. We had a restful afternoon and settled in for the evening.    Read more

    Easter Sunday

    We were awake in plenty of time for the Easter Sunday service (just under 5 hours before). It was a nice service and Edward was much admired. We walked back by way of the harbour where Edward, having informed us of his hunger, had a mid morning snack on a bench outside the Harbour Master’s office.

    After lunch we set off for a walk along the beach towards Bamburgh, with Edward in the sling. On the way back Edward stood on the sand and jiggled his feet about a bit. It must have been a strange sensation for him!    Read more

    Easter Monday

    Edward slept a little better last night, although still woke for the day around 6am as usual. After a slow ish start we set off for a walk, Edward in the sling. We walked past the harbour, which was still fairly quiet, up the hill and along the clifftop path, through the golf course, which was also quite quiet, and down onto the beach beyond. All the while Edward snoozed peacefully. Our return trip was the reverse and Edward woke while on the clifftop path. Once back in Seahouses he suddenly announced his hunger so we hastily made our way to our favourite feeding bench.

    We returned to the caravan via the Northumbrian Hamper, a shop in the town selling all manner of food and drink that one might put in a hamper, to buy ice cream to go with tonight’s pudding.

    Later in the afternoon we decided to go for yet another walk, this time using the buggy, and rather than contend with the hoards on a bank holiday afternoon we set off around the caravan site (being nosey) and then out along the road footpath towards Bamburgh. Turning around before the edge of Seahouses itself we headed back along the clifftop path on that side of the town, which was a little bumpy for the buggy.

    This evening we tested out the baby bathing facilities in Willerby... Edward was perhaps a little puzzled as to why he had his bath on the kitchen floor!    Read more

    This morning Andrew set off across the sea on a boat trip to the Farne Islands. This time back to Inner Farne, as Staple Island is not yet open to visitors.

    Sarah and Edward walked up to some benches overlooking the harbour and waved to Andrew as his boat left. While another baby, a similar age to Edward did make the trip, Edward’s parents didn’t like the idea and so Sarah remained ashore (Sarah’s treat comes tomorrow).

    There was quite a swell and the boat was tossed around a bit but it was still a pleasant trip. The lighting was bright but diffuse which allowed for some good photos of the puffins on the island.

    Andrew returned mid-afternoon to news that Edward had been a very good boy while his daddy had been away.    Read more

    Holy Island

    Edward had a somewhat disturbed second half of the night, getting Sarah up every 45 minutes. So Andrew took Edward through to the lounge while Sarah got a little more sleep.

    After we were all up and ready we headed off to Holy Island. One of Sarah and Andrew’s favourites. It was lovely to take Edward across for the first time. Holy Island can get very busy, but we caught it on a fairly quiet day. We walked towards the castle and ate our lunch sitting on a bench overlooking the harbour. We then walked back through the village to see the little school before heading back to the car.

    This afternoon Sarah went for a back and shoulder massage at the Ocean Club while Andrew stayed with Edward. Sarah returned feeling relaxed and thankfully Edward was in a good mood so gave her plenty of big grins. We finished off the day with a takeaway from the Italian restaurant in Seahouses.     Barter Books

    We were up with the lark as usual this morning and decided to head to Barter Books in Alnwick as the weather forecast wasn’t great. We chose a good day as it was lovely and quiet. We had a choice of tables in the coffee shop, which is quite rare when we have been recently. Edward was in a good mood this morning and the coffee shop gave him an opportunity to be nosy, watching other customers around him. As is often the case he attracted several ‘awwws’ and smiles from those around.

    After coffee we browsed around the shop, choosing one book for mum and dad and one book for Edward. Edward got to see the trains running around the top of the bookcases although it was a little lost on him. In a couple of years he will really appreciate them a little better.

    We returned to the caravan for lunch and had a relaxed afternoon. Andrew tried out Willerby’s new washer-dryer for a couple of loads (including a bit of drying). Edward’s baby bath makes quite a useful basket for the clean laundry!    Read more

    Craster

    Edward had another wakeful night so Andrew once again took him through to the lounge so Sarah could sleep. Edward was not in the best mood and made sure his daddy was aware of this!

    After a late start we headed off to Craster. We ate lunch overlooking the harbour and Edward once again got plenty of attention from passers by. After lunch we walked part of the way to Dunstanburgh Castle before heading back.

    Sarah was dropped off in Seahouses on the way back so she could look in the shops. Unfortunately her favourite, Drift, was closed. Andrew took Edward back, gave him some afternoon tea and settled him to sleep so Sarah returned to a nice quiet caravan.

    Tonight is our last night in Willerby. As is tradition we will be having take-away fish and chips for supper. Nice and easy.    Read more
