Camino 2023

April - September 2023
I committed to doing a second Camino as soon as I came to the end of my journey six years ago. At that time I was still working, my time was limited so I only completed about 300 ks. This time I'm walking the whole Camino, 780 kms. Read more

Leaving UK flying home to NZ family

    September 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Well folks that's it...my big adventure almost over with just 30 hours til I touch down in NZ.

It has been an amazing experience and I'm going home to reflect, write and keep in touch. I was so glad I'd taken my big suitcase out to the airport yesterday, as there was no train from the station at Barons Court today. They are working on the lines so that meant a big walk this afternoon into Hammersmith with 9 kilos on my back and three in a carry all!!

There I caught the bus to Osterley which got caught in Traffic, and took a bit longer adding to concrn that we wouldn't name it in time to collect my suitcase from left luggage. As I walked I gave myself a good talking to. The worst that could happen would be paying for extra time!! So my heart rate under control with my 7/4/8 breathing, I slowed down and gave myself a good pat on the back for taking care of myself.

Then it was down a ramp under the road and up another ramp to Osterley station to catch the underground to Heathrow...right into the terminal. It's amazing!! We're away ...cheerie for now xxx❤️‍🩹💖💕💕 ps ..sunrise near Doha photo and boarding passes, and done if the route it was an easy journey ...

  • Day 150

    Home again home again Aotearoa

    September 18, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

We have landed slightly late and weary but not as weary as I thought. On board I spent a lovely couple of times with a couple whose crying baby could not be settled til grannie Linda came to the rescue... poor wee might had sore tummy .... but he soon settled and went to sleep for me twice... the parents were very relieved as I think the whole cabin was, he had a loud screamy cry.

We're now waiting in huge line of people at customs, but I caught the eye of an aid who took me to electronic check out and was through quickly. Mary-Ellen and grandson James were waiting for me with a big bunch of flowers and a welcome home balloon✈️ but biggest gift was themselves hugs galore, tears and laughter 😅😥❤️‍🩹💙...

I managed to stay awake til the afternoon when I succumbed to the closing of eyes. Later in the evening Mary-Ellen and I went to the school boarding house to say hello to my great granddaughter, Bailey who just kept hugging and kissing me arms firmly wrapped saying how much she missed me. It was a tearful reunion again, but happy as well.

After a good nights sleep grandson James chauffeured me to the supermarket as we prepared to make a family dinner for my great granddaughters 15th birthday. She had ordered a vegie lasagna, rice pudding with vanilla sponge (bought by Mary-Ellen) for a birthday cake!! So dinner took me the rest of the day to prepare. So glad to get here for her birthday.

Philip (son in law) picked her up after LLP school while Mary-Ellen and and I went out to the airport again to say hello to my daughter Sarah who was on her way to Motueka to be with my three grandsons, Liam, Connor and Lachlan while my son Matthew and his wife, Rachel go on a 6 week tour in America and Europe for their respective 50th birthdays.

We had a lovely family dinner and caught up with our various goings on my great granddaughter so more grown up and doing well at school. My grandson enjoying his time at his classes in a social work certificate course before undertaking his degree in early childhood next year.

    London lat week

    September 14, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

A trip to Windsor today is one on my last outings before I leave these shores once more for New Zealand. With a heavy heart I said goodbye to my baby sister and her husband on Saturday night as they were leaving for their holiday in Turkey. Popped at the post I awoke at 3.54 a m. To wish them farewell but they had already gone. That was a bit sad

Then on Tuesday I journeyed over to Southampton to see my newly found cousins, the gorgeous Mackie clan, John, Jean, Gill and Phil....another sad farewell.. so this is about it for now I fly out on Saturday with a visit to beaire on Friday night for a spa treatment my daughter sent me...and am so looking forward to that.

    Monday in Baron's keep

    September 4, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

A quick trip to the local supermarket to pick up a few things saw me sauntering out the back door and down through a park where a few people were still sleeping, I wondered how long it would take before they were awoken by the city waking itself up.Read more

    Barons keep to lambeth

    September 3, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

After all my travels and wanderings, to reach London and my sister and brother in law's home feels like a sanctuary. I have felt the effects of the miles on my physical self, my feet groaning, griping, whining with complaints, longing to sit a while, bide a wee.

Despite this we are off to the Oasis church at Lambeth today I am certainly going to give thanks for the blessing of physical ability and travel mercies. Away in the tube, or two and a bus, we enjoyed the busi-ness of London Bridge where I was right up close to the houses of parliament and big ben and Westminster as I have never been before. Just the scale of the buildings is awesome.

We met some lovely people at Megs and Colin's church which believes in inclusion and service within the community doing so much work wherever they see a need. I kept falling asleep during the service but was very aware of my head lolling to the side to embrace the stranger next to me. She didn't seem worried at all, I just hope i didn't snore!

Off to Alex's place for brunch

    September 2, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Margaret and Colin's friend Alex is from Romania and invited us to brunch at her house before everyone goes away on holiday. I was invited to come along and so glad to see Alex again. I had first met her six years ago at Jonathan and Rosalia's wedding.

We had a lovely time discussing our various lives since then and again i'm reminded how difficult life can be as an immigrant, even more so when the language is totally different, and how resilient we humans can be.

    Sherwood forest to London

    September 1, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Up early again so that I could get to Sherwood forest before catching the 12.30 bus to London, I reluctantly left my lovely little room and ensuite for the streets of Nottingham just waking up to the day. I was amazed again at the size of the buildings here, they seemed to loom over the streets in their magnificence.

I was well in time to catch the bus, not wanting to miss it, as, if I did I wouldn't be seeing the forest at all. It took about an hour to get out to the forest from Nottingham and I enjoyed watching the streets and farm lands pass by as we made out way North.

I took the wrong pathway to the "giant oak tree" where it is said Robin and his merry men sheltered once upon a time.

    Sherwood forest

    September 1, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

This has had to be the quick trip of the week!! Travel by bus leaving at 8 a.m. from a busy station half an hour's walk away, so up by 5.40 a.m. to shower and pack leaving my gorgeous motel room by 7 a.m.

How I love these early morning starts, the city is quiet, beginning to wake up as my suitcase clatters along the empty streets. I'm sure I'll get there in time so sit quietly in a "Gregg's" cafe to drink my morning coffee and two vegan sausage rolls!! What a treat!!
