  • Calico ghost town

    April 12, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Calico was a silver mining town that only existed between 1881 and 1896 for fifteen years. The town was left to decay, and it did almost completely disappear, but it was rebuilt (supposedly with historical accuracy) to its original look. Well, it probably didn't have gifts shops, and dog treat shops back then, but otherwise let's say its accurate. We were waved in by the lady sitting in the front booth without paying, I'm not sure if we got lucky, or it is always free. It was really really windy here too, for example in front of the saloon they had some rocking chairs on the porch, and all of them were moving on their own from the wind. We could go and walk around a few hundred meters of the original mines, the little train that also goes around in the mines was not operating unfortunately. It was a bit kitschy, and I didn't know before going that it will all just be a reproduction, and nothing original, but it was still a fun stop.Read more

  • Old woman meteorite

    April 12, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Another silly sounding roadside attraction: the second biggest meteorite in the US. We went in very sceptical and then were proven wrong, it was not just a rock, but almost completely made out of iron, and weighed almost 3000 kg. It had to be lifted out of the desert where it was found by military helicopters. The rest of the museum was mostly for children, but we still learned a thing or two about hummingbirds, and tortoises.Read more

  • Molly Brown's Country cafe

    April 12, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

We stopped for lunch at a random diner, that turned out to be a very local chain, with 4 restaurants in a 10 mile radius. The waitresses were ridiculously kind and attentive, which is always strange for me here in the US, but this was the most extreme case we have encountered so far. They had a super good value lunch menu, where we both got a big plate of food for 12 dollars. Originally I wanted to have pie as my diner experience, but we couldn't even finish my plate, let alone have dessert. Seamus ordered chicken fried steak, which he wanted to try for a long time (which is a steak fried like a wiener schnitzel, and I had a philly cheese steak.Read more

  • Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch

    April 12, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

This was such an amazingly American weird roadside attraction, but one that we actually really enjoyed stopping at. We don't know why Elmer built his bottle tree Ranch, as he wasn't around, but the gates are open for everyone to come in and see it. It is an enormous field of metal "trees" that he mush have welded himself, where on every branch a colorful bottle was placed. There are all kind of funky metallic things topping certain trees, some of them movable by the wind, also lots of wind chimes (store bought and homemade as well) and bird feeders. Seamus called it the best art he's ever been inside, and I have to agree, it is just really beautiful to be in. The heavy winds make everything tinkle and creak, and the birds are chirping, and you walk around between all the colors, and funny signs, it is relaxing and entertaining at the same time. There were special bird feeders for hummingbirds, and there were multiple of them flying around, in various colors of green and red and pink. We were the only people in the whole place, and mostly left because of the high winds (and because we really needed to use the bathroom)Read more

  • Joining route 66

    April 12, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

After about 2.5-3 hours of driving (but having fun as the surroundings were so different) we finally arrived to the first point I actually planned to see today, which is a short bit of route 66 that we could drive, between Victoville and Baker. I think you can see on Seamus that the wind by now was really brutal. Also surprisingly the sun was strong, but it wasn't actually very warm, nothing higher than 18 degrees, even though we were in a desert!Read more

  • World's best beef jerky

    April 12, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We pulled over based on a sign on the side of the road to try the world's best beef jerky (according to them...) as I don't actually remember ever trying it. Inside we found a quirky gift shop full of weird little gadgets, mostly native American related, and of course the jerky. We accidentally bought a buffalo one, but I'm assuming beef is similar :D it was actually really nice salty, peppery and stringy, but tender at the same time!Read more

  • Driving past LA

    April 12, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

As we actually stopped before La the night before, it took about 2 hours just to drive around it on the North. It really surprises us how quickly it turned dry and desert like, especially after the super green coastline of the last few days, the contrast was incredible. I think I squealed a little bit, when a tumbleweed first rolled across the road of us.Read more

  • Almost staying in LA

    April 11, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

A bit after 5 we gave up on finding Ester néni that night, and found a motel around where we were, which happened to be Ventura. For dinner we went to a nearby taco place. We ordered some tacos and some nachos, both of which were quite good, and they were fun to spice up with this from the free salad bar, which had 6-8 different sauces, and toppings, like extra onions, cilantro, lime, etc. On a big TV they had baseball going on, it was Hugo's favourite the Oakland Athletics playing against the dodgers, completely winning too. Seamus ordered a beer, which came in an enormous and heavy chalice. I ordered a margarita, as I thought it would be nice to add to the Mexican theme, especially as it was the same price as a beer. I was quite surprised when it arrived in the same glass as Seamus's beer... I managed to drink about 2/3 of it and then gave up. We fell asleep watching more funny American TV.Read more

  • Golf n' stuff

    April 11, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

As we were driving to LA, we could still not get in contact with Ester néni, who we were supposed to stay with, so as a fun birthday event, and also to kill some time, we pulled over when we saw the sign for minigolf, and some enormous building that promised elaborate golfing fun. In the end it wasn't sooo crazy, but it was still pretty fun. Of course Seamus completely beat me in the game, but I managed to not get too upset about sucking at golf, and even had some cool successful shots. The real fun actually came when we went inside, and played with the arcade machines. It is pretty cool to be an adult, and have the power to waste as much money in it, as you want! Although I think we only got 7 dollars worth of tokens between us, so it wasn't even too crazy spending. A the way it works, is you use tokens to play with all kinds of games, and depending on how you do, you get tickets that the machine spits out. At the end you can buy different little silly prizes with your tickets. We played 3 types of ball throwing games:ski ball (I was the best at this, I managed to get it into the highest 10000 point hole), basketball, and American football. Surprisingly we won most of our tickets with American football out of these. Our most successful game out of all was kungfu panda, where you had to hit 1 out of 6 drums, based on where a dumpling was coming so that the panda could kungfu it away. Seamus had an amazing run on this, after which the machine spent about a minute spitting out 250 tickets. It was amazing, we felt like we won the lottery. I played dance dance revolution for the first time, which I was pretty bad at even at the easy setting, and then Seamus decided to set it extra hard for my second run, on which I scored an impressive 0%,even though I was basically just running in place trying to hit anything by luck. In the end we got to feed all our tickets to a counting machine, which was also really fun to do with the longer tickets, and then we got to choose some silly stuff from the store. We were actually mostly excited about the cheapest items, we got some funny instant tattoos, a sticky spiderman, and a zombie that grows 6 times in size when addax to water.Read more

  • Santa Barbara County courthouse

    April 11, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This courthouse was built in Spanish revival colonial style, which is really popular in all of Santa Barbara: as we could see from the view from the top of the tower, there were similar red tiled buildings all around us. This is an active courthouse that is almost completely empty for the public. It was really cool to walk around, see what court hearings were scheduled for the day, go inside the law library, go inside the big and decorated court room, where weddings are held (and according to the sign, you are allowed to go in, even if one is in progress). Also the halls were decorated with murals of historic events, like argentinian pirates arriving to the city, or the Spanish themselves arriving and meeting with the Indians (very parks and recreation style, except they didn't actually show the brutality as much :D).Read more

  • Pismo beach

    April 11, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Another pretty beach full of surfers. They had a cool pier but unfortunately we couldn't go on top as it was closed for repairs. It didn't mean we couldn't go underneath though :D after that we had the best clam chowder ive ever had and a BLT in a little cafe near the beach. Oh, before the chowder we actually had a cinnamon roll, as they have a shop that sells only cinnamon rolls, but about 8 different types, we got a basic one with a side of cream cheese frosting. MmmmmmRead more

  • Morning walk in Morro Bay

    April 11, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We woke up to a slightly cloudy day, but went to look around the town we stayed at for a short while. We had some sweet apple pastry for breakfast, and I got a small coffee with it: which was easily 3 dl big, and I could have had free refills on it if it wasn't enough... Unfortunately the town's only famous sight, the skateboard museum was closed, so we could only look at it from the outside. In the harbour I found a guy washing out some containers, and two big seals circling around under him, shouting in their weird load voices. I think we heard the same seal from our bedroom in the morning too.Read more

  • Our first night at an inn

    April 10, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We found an actual Inn on airbnb for quite a good price, and it was just far enough to get there after dark, but still have dinner. It was actually quite nice inside, the room was really enormous, and there was an ice machine a few meters outside out door (I've no idea what Americans actually do with ice at a motel, but it seems to be a thing they have at every place). We wanted to try chowder while we were still at the seaside, so that's what we both ordered. It was nice, but not amazing (spoiler for the future, as I am writing this a bit late: the next day we went to a place that is famous for its chowder, and it tasted much much better). We forgot to acquire cake for me, but we had a big portion of warm brownie topped with vanilla ice cream.Read more

  • Stopping for coffee with a surprise

    April 10, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

After a picnic lunch, I became super sleepy and was dosing off all the time, missing the beautiful views. So after we tried having a short nap that didn't really help we mage the sensible decision and stopped for coffee. It made us grateful that we brought a picnic - this place had small pastries for 9-10 dollars each, we didn't even dare to look at other food prices... On the way back to the car, I want up to a tree to look at its unusual flowers and then to my amazement a hummingbird flew up to it. In my excitement all I could do was keep shouting, "look Seamus, a kolibri" to which he kept asking what a kolibri was, and I just kept saying, a kolibri, a kolibri! Finally he spotted the bird too, so he informed me it's name was a hummingbird. It was really incredible to me to see one just hanging out in front of a bar. In general there seems to be much more wildlife about, and lots of them are pretty and exciting and new for us. Almost every minute you can spot a hawk circling around the sky as well, they are also beautiful.Read more

  • Pfeiffer beach

    April 10, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

This beaches was a tiny bit off the main 101 road, and we did have to pay 10 dollars for parking, but it was worth it for me as it was really beautiful. I wanted to go to this beach because I read that it had purple sand, which did prove to be true - although it is not bright purple of course, but a light coating of purple sand on top of the normal one. We took some time to explore the rocks, me barefoot, Seamus in his new super grippy boating sneakers. There were lot of animals around and pretty views of course. Both on the way in an out we had to drive through a smallish river, and we chose to do it in the fastest possible speed (we did rent an suv after all) which covered all the front of the windows completely in water and was great fun. We drove back to do it an extra time before leaving.Read more

  • Route 101

    April 10, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Our main program for today was to drive down route 101 past Big Sur State park, and stopping whenever we find it scenic enough (basically at all times) unfortunately we couldn't drive down the coats all the way to Los Angeles as the road was closed off for our direction after Gorda. So instead we were forced to drive through the mountains on small twisty roads for an hour and a half to drive back to the main road. It was still a nice drive, so I wouldn't complain too much. We had a small scary moment when our car started making horrifying noises in the middle of nowhere, but it turned out to be just the engine cover scraping on the ground, and we managed to push it back up again.
Other from that we had amazing weather the whole day, it was warm but not too warm for jeans. There was also not a crowd anywhere so it was nice to drive and we could stop and have a parking place wherever we wanted to.

  • Carmel by the sea

    April 10, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Our first stop today we what we didn't have time for yesterday - Carmel by the sea, which is a town with an long and beautiful beach and with big and beautiful and expensive houses. Oh and frolicking dogs on its beach, according to its own description (there were quite a lot to be fair). We had a nice walk along the beach, but up on a path not in the sand - I spared Seamus from walking in the sand this time.Read more

  • Sea otters in the wild

    April 9, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

I found something one the internet about a month ago, that some nearby harbour has sea otters living around in it, that you can see, and we had just enough time to try and find them before the sun went down. I didn't have very high hopes - I thought at the very best we would see something so perhaps far away, but in the end we were really lucky. There was a huge group of otters lounging about in the sea that we could clearly see play and float around, and there were two of them sleeping on the beach only a few metres away from us. We stayed to watch them until the sun went down.Read more

  • Another day another beach

    April 9, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

After the aquarium we still had about 2 hours of sunshine left, so first we stopped off at a beach which I saw from the car earlier. It caught my eye, as the sand dunes next to it seemed to be covered in something red, which turned out to be succulents affected by some late spring cold, that have turned all kinds of red. Before going to the beach we stopped to get some takeout for dinner, trying a new fast food place, Carl's junior (it was OK) the beach turned out be be quite beautiful even without the red succulents. There were incredibly big and loud waves, with some sea birds sitting on the water who were always ducking at the last minute like little surfers. Also the top of the hill overlooking the beach had quite a big squirrel population, we kept spotting the little dudes running across the trail, or hanging out at the edge of the cliff munching of flower petals.Read more

  • Monterey aquarium

    April 9, 2018, North Pacific Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After the garlic madness we headed down to monterrey where they have one of the biggest and coolest aquariums in America. I am in love with otters, so that was my biggest wish to see, but probably the coolest things to see were the enormous aquariums multiple meters high. There was one of the life of the harbours, one on life in the kelp forest, and one on the deep sea (probably the coolest). It was amazing to see huge swarms of sardines swimming around like they had one communal mind, and also the beautiful but disturbing jelly fish, which I managed to drag Seamus into (to the room to see them, not into the jellyfish themselves) . There were also some tiny and harmless jellyfish, that had colorful led displays moving on their bodies, they were unbelievable.
But the sea otters were cute to see as well, they were swimming around playing with each other and the water and even with toys, they had tons of balls hanging around, that they would pick up and balance between their hands. They are quite good with their hands and they use them to open up shells of sea creatures (they scratched up the display window super bad until the aquarium learned they should not get shelled food in there). I also learned that they don't have oil on their fur, they only pat themselves to fluff up their fur to have as much air as possible for insulation.

  • The garlic capital of the world

    April 9, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We also stopped off in gilroy by Seamus request (his grandma has a cup from the 1992 gilroy garlic festival!) this town specialises in garlic and they sold everything you can possibly put garlic in including the world's longest string of garlic. We were hoping to buy a mug of our own but unfortunately we could not find any.Read more

  • Going out in Napa town

    April 8, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Our airbnb was in the suburb of Napa, about 2 miles from the town center. We decided to ignore our host's advice about taking an uber (thinking that she's just being American about it and thinks walking is unthinkable). In the end it took us about 40-50 minutes to get to the centre, as the town was really not designed to walk, so we had some quite difficult times trying to go around motorways (and not walking on them like Google suggested). Apart from the motorway problems it was a nice walk in typical American suburbia, which was interesting to see (once). In town we first had some frozen yogurt (trying out basically all of the possible flavours before buying some, basically doubling our consumption). Then we went to a bbq and wine bar, so finally Seamus could consume his own glass of wine. We didn't plan on eating anything originally, but everything smelled so amazingly smoky, that in the e d we ordered a smoked beef brisket sandwich and shared it, it was really delicious, and basically a perfect amount for the two of us.Read more

  • Napa valley wine tasting

    April 8, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I booked an airbnb in Napa a few days ago just because I saw a really cheap one for the area. Afterwards reading up about it and talking with Evi and Hugo, we realised we probably would have been better off going to the neighbouring Sonoma region. Napa is the super famous, fancy and expensive wine region, while right next to it Sonoma has similar wines, but a more laid back atmosphere and about half the price (even one of the sommeliers in Napa itself tod us to go there instead) . But anyway the airbnb was booked, so it had to be Napa after all. We considered renting bikes, but Seamus wouldn't have wanted to drink that much even then (still trying to get his stomach to be normal again) so he just drove us around and I did most of the drinking. We chose an amazing time to visit, as 2 days after the torrential rain, the whole place was ridiculously green. Like greener than Scotland green. There were also all kinds of wild flowers growing here and there. So basically Napa valley is a 30 mile long valley, about 5 miles wide at its widest. The sorrounding hills are all covered in forests, and the valley itself is covered with grape plantations. There's 400-600 little vineyards all around, and all of them offer tastings. Unfortunately while about 10 years ago these used to be free, now they al charge a fee, which at "cheap" places start at 20 dollars from having a small tasting of 4 wines, but easily start from 40-50 at others. We still drove in to multiple wineries (even though we only consumed wine at 2 of them) as all of them have beautiful setup so it was always nice to stop and look around. In the middle of green wine fields, all the houses are beautiful (in a variety of styles, from super modern ones, to cute wood houses, to tuscan villas) they all have big terraces to hang out, try wines or have picnics. We did a tasting flight (that's what they call them apparently) at Black Stallion vineyard, where the sommelier's grandparents were Hungarian, so we bonded over his wish of visiting Hungary and his love of bikaver. Our favourite place was Honig vineyard, I could spend days sitting in their garden. The girls serving us were super friendly and we talked with them for a long time. One of the girls got married in Scotland, on the island of his "husband's clan" ! Here we managed to buy a half bottle of wine instead of the tasting, which was actually better value. They kept bringing out thoughtful stuff, like a cute book on the dogs of the area's vineyards, or just to check on us and chat. Even if the wine was expensive, the experience was definitely worth it for the day!Read more

  • Jelly belly factory

    April 8, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

I have no idea how I found out about this, but they give free tours in the original Jelly belly factory, and it was on the way up to Napa, so we decided to visit. It was unfortunately a Sunday, so nothing was actually running down in the factory, but it was still cool to see. They had big glass windows all around the factory and a walkway high up so we could see everything. While on tour everyone had to wear dorky hats. We learned about some of the funny/ridiculous flavours they invented, and also about how Ronald Reagan apparently really liked jelly bellies, and he had a dedicated container in his office. Oh, also that jelly belly art apparently is a thing. At the end of the tour they even gave us a free bag of jelly beans!Read more
