    Farewell Cape Town

    January 28 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

A great last day with hop on hop off bus stops at Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens one of the top 7 gardens of its type in the world and Sydney is in the list!
We wander to the canopy walk and with the back drop of the stunning mountains it’s a real highlight of the day. We venture to Camps Bay with breathtaking views of the sandy beaches and huge boulders and we stop for a seafood feast at the surf shack overlooking the sparkly beach.
To the V&A waterfront for last minute shopping and listening to amazing singers and a drink by the water. Lovely.
We Uber back to the hotel and relax with a light dinner and a few wines. It’s been a lovely day and we toast our fabulous cruisemates. What a great trip!
Early morning call for a 7 am transfer to the airport!

    Disembarking (sob)

    January 27 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

All good things come to an end and it is with genuine emotion that we bid goodbye to new friends and the crew and of course the Silver Spirit where all my cruise dreams have come true. It’s a Misty magical sail in to Cape Town with a full moon welcoming us into port. A speedy disembarkation and to the hotel to wait for our pick up to Robben island.
We have learnt much about SA’s complicated history and we venture to the nearby South Africa museum which tells the story through African eyes. It was all a bit white colonial perspective onboard for the enrichment lectures so I was pleased to see a bit of truth telling. Robben Island was moving, disturbing and just a lot really. So glad we went. I didn’t know it was also a leper colony. Such harrowing tales told by Sparky our tour guide who was a political prisoner for 7 years on the island. Everyone says they have hope for the future in SA but it looks like a long hard road. We are all very tired and enjoy a lovely meal at our hotel.

    Packing up

    January 26, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Morning swim and spa and breakfast in La Terrazza. So many choices such good food. This morning I have a chia pudding and berries and toast and salmon. We have collapsed in our room after an amazing last day at sea. I was talking to Royce one minute and the next he is snoring. We wanted to go to the panorama Lounge for one last get together with our friends but we have packed our bags and collapsed in a heap after a delicious meal of seafood stew and gnocchi. The wine has been fantabulous and is included as are the excursions.
The bridge tour at 10am was really interesting as our silly captain ( self titled) and Gabriel the assistant captain led us through the intricate workings of the bridge. We listened to a talk about the KGB followed by more food and then packing up of our belongings. We come 4th in trivia and are happy with our performance. We all trade our points in and we end up with 2 Silversea T shirts and 2 pens. Very happy. Dinner is Italian and delicious! The gnocchi is superb and the wine flows freely. Such a great day!

    January 26, Indian Ocean ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

Highlights of the day include a morning swim and spa, breakfast in La Terrazza the buffet restaurant at the rear of the ship, a relaxing hair treatment using the last of our on board credit, lunch in the Japanese sushi bar, coming 3rd in trivia with our amazing trivia team - Roos plus 1 ( Harry and Libby, Alex and Meredith, Ian and Geoff, Royce and I), the final show and crew farewell, an Indian feast in Indochine restaurant organized by Meredith to celebrate our fabulous new friendships and KARAOKE !! All my cruise dreams have definitely come true. Libby and I do the last song - Belinda Carlisle and we definitely give it all we’ve got. The whole team sang Mama Mia and Land Down Under ( to celebrate Australia Day) and the night is a complete success and so much fun. I think we have shown our new cruisemates a new side of cruising!! Max and Ian have been wonderful cruisemates. Thanks for organizing all our dinners so expertly, for your excellent company and all the fun, laughs and adventures. What a hoot!Read more

    On safari

    January 24 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

An early morning wake up call coffee and muffins and we are in our vehicle at 5.30 am. We didn’t encounter any creatures on our way to the main lodge even though we heard that a female leopard likes to walk along our boardwalk. It’s an amazing drive through gorgeous terrain over bumpy trails and hills and valleys and waterholes and down to the river. We travel further four hours which necessitates a toilet stop in the African wilderness which is just a little frightening. We encounter herds of elephants eating, bathing, mowing down trees, impalas, inyalas, a line Kudu (which also appears on our dinner menu), many zebras, a wild dog foot print, a wart hog, buffalo, wildebeest. The stop for coffee and Amarula is welcome as is breakfast at the lodge. Would love to stay and enjoy the amazing facilities but it’s back to the ship which is now black with coal dust from the port! Lunch and wine and trivia and drinks and fun and dinner with Max and Ian in Atlantide with prawns and lobster. Post dinner drinks and a liar liar game in Dolce Vita with Alex and Meredith who are part of our fun trivia group and Royce and so toddle off to bed exhausted but exhilarated from another amazing cruise day!Read more

We docked early in Richard’s Bay and at 10.30 am left the ship for the 2 hour bus journey to Biyela Lodge in the mFulaWozi Wilderness Area. This was set to be an amazing experience. A mid voyage land tour including an overnight stay in the luxury lodge. Our new cruisemates were joining us and we set off with great expectations. The journey took us through very bumpy roads in a mini bus that had seen better days and we were very happy to arrive in one piece at our accommodation. A beautiful greeting and beautiful rooms and the view! And the landscapes and the animals! Elephants, Zebras, Impalas, Inyalas, water bucks, buffalo, rare birds, kites, shrews. Our afternoon game drive turns into a night drive ! Amazing!Read more

    Tala game reserve

    January 23, Indian Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Our first game drive and it didn’t disappoint. We started with Zebras, giraffes, impalas, wildebeest, rhinos, monkeys, rare blue cranes, fish eagles and ended with dancing in the rain on the pool deck. We are loving this cruise! So special. I cried a couple of times in the open air vehicle. Can’t believe what I’ve seen. It was an amazing day. Followed by a great night chatting with Harry and Libby at the grill over dinner and then the disco show by the pool and holiday Royce is in fine form on the dance floor and then it pours with rain and we keep dancing! What fun. A perfect day and all my cruise dreams have come true!Read more

    A thousand hills

    January 21 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Very happy to have set foot on dry land in Durban. It’s a huge city of 4 million people and we get a great view as we sail into the harbour. Lots of people along the foreshore watching as we sail by.
We need to go through immigration again as we are back from Namibia and entering South Africa again. Breakfast in Atlantide and a walk around the ship and we head off for an hours drive to the Thousand hills Zulu park. It’s very touristy but hey we are tourists and we enjoy the show which includes very athletic dancing, beautiful singing and a wedding ceremony- we get some great ideas for Connor and Adelaide’s upcoming nuptials!

    Land ahoy!

    January 20, Indian Ocean ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

Well it’s another sea day making 4 in a row but I’m not complaining. Royce is handling the rough seas amazingly well and we are looking forward to finding land in Durban tomorrow.
We’ve had another sparkly amazing sea day with a sleep in, swim and spa, Bloody Mary’s for breakfast, a movie , nap, some great company and coming 2nd in Trivia by 1 point!! We love our trivia team companions and plan a last night dinner together. It’s the captains cocktail party formal evening and Royce looks very dapper in his suit and bow tie. Dinner in the Italian restaurant with a fabulous chardy some limoncello to accompany a Tuscan bean soup and a delicious risotto. What a great cruise!Read more

  • Day 10

    Unexpected sea day

    January 19, Indian Ocean

We are up dressed and eating a very delicious room service breakfast when the captain announces it’s too rough to tender at Mossel Bay. Initial disappointment replaced by what will we do with our extra onboard credit now that the excursion is cancelled?? I quickly contact the spa and make arrangements for a couples massage which see me gently snoring … very relaxed. The included onboard credit has produced a pedicure, couples massage, a pair of new trousers for Royce and 2 specialty restaurants. And we have another $250 US to spend!
We go to the port talk, lunch at La Terrazza and to our room to read while we wait for the next activity!
It’s too windy on the balcony so I retreat indoors.
Bingo and Trivia and we get to know more about our fabulous new friends. They are such good fun!
Post trivia drinks leads to an amazing dinner in La Dame. Max and Ian are great company and we meet out trivia friends in La dolce vita lounge for more merriment. A late night. Very rocky seas!
