  • Goat herder family village visit- inside

    29. september 2019, Mongolia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

At 5pm we set off west to a local goat herder family for a “ village visit”.
Usually K and I particularly dislike this type of tourism but the next hour was actually v enjoyable.
After entering their main ger and moving in a clockwise direction to sit we were presented with bowls of boiled mares milk, followed by dried curd, mares milk cream and then fermented mares milk vodka!!
This family also bred racing horses so we were shown their 200yr old horse brand, bridle and fetters. They also had horse brush and a horse sweat scraper that were cherished items hung from the rafters of their ger.
The couple were so lovely as they continued to serve us before taking us outside to show how they milked their goats.

  • Big day today- laundry done!

    30. september 2019, Mongolia ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Woke up for the last time in our amazing ger. Breakfast and then we watched “ the Eagle Huntress” in preparation for going to the Eagle Festival in the far west of Mongolia in a few days.
We left Gobi Nomad Lodge at 10.30am and got dropped at the airport ( where we all probably pissed off the drivers by only leaving the half of their “expected” tip - the amount we keep getting reminded of by our guide- this is pissing us all off)
Got the 12.20pm plane back to UB where we were immediately whisked off to lunch as it was now 3pm. We had a great steak lunch but not sure we needed the other 3 courses.
Got back to the Ramada at 4pm and yippee we were free for the rest of the day.
K and I found a laundry about 15 mins away and were so happy when we were told it would be ready in 2 hrs.
Time to head to the cashmere shop and then for a coffee. Back to the laundrette at 7pm- big day to have clean clothes!!
We made it to the 17th floor for 7.30pm drinks and then dowstairs for a 4 course dinner at 8pm with the rest of the group- how much food?! Desert was ice cream on a bowl of cornflakes!!
Sadly the pleasant evening was spoilt by a v loud and drunk table of Koreans next to us despite the whole restaurant being empty.
9pm was time for repacking for next 2 days when we head into the national parks- and the temperature plummet to 10 degs. Snow expected for Thursday!!

  • Chinggis Khan Statue complex

    1. oktober 2019, Mongolia ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Today we left UB in our 4 wheeled drives for 2 days in the national parks.
2 hours east of UB was our first destination- the massive statue of Chinggis ( Ghengis) Khan standing at 26m tall.
He is holding the golden horse whip which he reportedly found on this site and it was responsible for giving him extra strength and power.
The complex was reported built and funded by a private company whose owner is weirdly now the country’s president! However it is an impressive monument to an impressive warrior.

  • Terelj national park and monastery

    1. oktober 2019, Mongolia ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

After Chinggis Khan we headed deeper into the Terelj NP. Despite its impressive and awe inspiring rock formations it is full of holiday camps.
We checked into our v swanky ger for the night at Terelj Lodge- our ger has 3 large v untraditional windows but the view is worth the deviation.
Another 4 course lunch was followed by a trip to “turtle rock” and the hillside Aryaval Monastery and meditation centre. It was an impressive little place with 108 steps leading to it. I think this is to give u time to empty ur mind before u Enter- K’s was already v empty so she had no trouble!!
Now back at lodge warming up as it’s pretty cold at 5 degs as the sunsets at 6.30pm.
Tmrw we move to Hustai NP.

  • Hustai National Park and

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Przewalski's_horse

We woke to snow this am!. We left Terelj national park this am at 10am and drive 3.5 hours to Hustai National Park just to the west of UB.
Our ger has a traditional stove as heating which is good because it is freezing! Down to 2 degs with a wind chill factor making it feel in the minus.
Following a buffet lunch we got the stove fired up, visited the onsite info centre and increased our knowledge about the rare Przewalski’s horses which became extinct in the wild but have been successfully reintroduced. ( I had included the links above if anyone is interested- and the save those who r not!!)
At 3.30pm off we went Przewalski horse spotting- not that easy in low light and v low cloud. However our driver Magna was amazing and we spotted a v distant couple high up on the ridge before too long.
10 mins later 8 horses were spotted coming down off a high ridge. It looked like 7 adults and a foal that came galloping down the hill toward some water. We got back in the car and by the time we had turned around the prized, rare horses had crossed the track and were making their way back up the opposite hillside. They have v short manes and tails and rounded heads- they r striking.
After freezing our asses off we got back in the cars and made our way home. However just down the track there was a v lonely looking stallion just close by. He trotted past us, looking directly at us several times and then crossed behind us and took off up the hill.
A v satisfying experience on the whole.
Now back sat in the ger, by the stove, it’s snowing outside..... and we r listening to the ABs vs Canada on the radio app!! Sadly we have to go for dinner so will have to stop listening- poor Canada!!

  • Hustai National Park to UB

    3. oktober 2019, Mongolia ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

    Slightly frustrating day.
Woke up in a lovely warm ger thanks to K stoking the fire all night and random bags of coal being delivered every 3 hours!
Stunning am with clear blue skies and a dusting of snow on the hilltops.
We had loads of time this am so we asked if we could go back to the NP to see the horses this am “ we won’t see them” was the reply from Unru. Can we go back to see some deer? “ we won’t see them” came the reply again- aka we r not driving back into the park- we will just hang around until 10.30am for no reason at all except to get us to our lunch spot in the city at lunch time. Sadly this tour seems to prioritise meals over activities and it’s starting to piss me and others off.
At 10.30am we left and drove the 2 hours back to the city.
On the way we stopped off to see 3 original dinosaur skeletons.... in a mall!! Yes thats right - 3 x 70 million year old original dinosaur skeletons... not in a museum... but in a mall!! They were incredible.
Then we stopped off to photograph the camel train sculpture before being taken to a restaurant for a traditional Mongolian lunch - fatty mutton and noodles.
    http://mongolia.gogo.mn/r/147396
We finally got back to the hotel at 3.30pm- what a waste of a day. K and I immediately went out for a walk around town.
Now having a drink on 17th floor - both skipped dinner at 7pm because we just didn’t need any more food. Also we have to get up at 2am for our 05.20am flight to Ulgii... to the Eagle Festival!!!! Can’t wait!!

  • 2am start UB to Ulgii- Kazahk county

    4. oktober 2019, Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 -2 °C

What a long but great day!
Sorry for the multiple posts but too many photos from today.
We were up at 2am, checked out of Ramada and got a 2.45 am pick up for the airport. Temperature -7C!!
We were first to check in for the 05.20am flight west to Ulgii for the Eagle Festival!!
Sadly the coffee shop hadn’t turned on the coffee machine but did serve us hot chocolates which woke us up.
The 3 hour flight went quickly as we napped for some of it but managed to stay awake as we flew over the snow covered Altai Mountains - stunning!!!
Ulgii is so close to the Kazahkstan border the clocks went back an hour.
It’s was still -7C when we landed but was a clear, crisp sunny am Into the town with a population of 29,000
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ölgii_(city)
We got dropped off at our brand new hotel and had “free time” until 12.30pm ( now only 8.30am) so we found Arvin cafe and all spent an hour or so there before exploring town.

  • Ulgii market and random eagle hunters!

    4. oktober 2019, Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 -2 °C

After lunch we got to wander around the local market which sold everything from glass panels to fur lined leather boots, souvenirs to knock off designer underwear.
K got groped by some man whilst Phil and Erica were buying embroidery!!
After the market we drove more than an hour out to visit an eagle hunter family. It turned out we were visiting the champion who was competing over the wkend.
On the way out we came across 4 eagle hunters coming down over the hills work their eagles on their way into town- we stopped for photos even though they were miles away.
Further on there were more!!! 4 more single eagle hunters on their horses, holding their eagles whilst riding into town for tmrw- all were v friendly and allowed us to take photos from the car.
However as we crested the hill into Sagai we came across the most amazing eagle hunter sitting having a rest..., with his eagle on the back of his motorbike!!!
His name was pronounced “what”- and we had a great 15 mins whilst Unru and the drivers chatted to him whilst we all took photos.
Erica printed out a photo of him and his eagle on her little instant printer- What”s face was a picture in itself as it lit up with delight.
Finally we moved on to the hunters family we were meant to be spending time with.

  • The Eagle Festival - day 1 post 1 of 75!

    5. oktober 2019, Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 0 °C

The most incredible day ever. I can’t even write about it because it was so unbelievably amazing.
I will try to post the videos taken but they may be too long. We only took a handful of photos on the phone as everywhere we looked demanded 20 shots on the camera. K took just under 1000 pics just today!!!
The festival was full of horses, camels, furs, weathered faces, embroidery, eagles... and sadly tourists with huge cameras!!! What a day!!
(Started well with a vodka sprinkling tribute to Ev to help send her spirit on its way- her ashes were scattered down the Murchison river today so it was nice to send her off from Mongolia- fly free Ev )

  • Eagle Festival videos

    5. oktober 2019, Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 0 °C

All day we watched the 120 competitors call their eagles down from the mountain onto their arm.
So many didn’t make it!! They circled overhead but landed outside the arena, or just buggered off straight away not to be seen. K was complaining she hadn’t got a good shot of an eagle landing. We were walking through the stalls and one landed at our feet- about 100m from where it should have landed!!
The first video gives an idea of what we were watching. It was taken late in the pm so sorry for the poor placement.
The other video was of the loviest old man and his ? Son who helped him onto his horse.

  • Kazakh Concert part 2

    5. oktober 2019, Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 -1 °C

It was quite mind blowing after all day at the Eagle Festival!!! K is fast asleep at 10pm and I can’t string a sentence together- watch the first video and it is clear why!!! Enjoy- we did!

  • Eagle Festival Day 2- am

    6. oktober 2019, Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 0 °C

Woke a bit tired after yesterday’s excitement not sure if we were ready for more.
We got to the festival site at 8.30am, staked a spot and headed off for a walk whilst it was quiet.
K and I decided to check out the back of the hill the eagles are released from and found a path so up we went.
To cut a v long story short we ended up sitting amongst the eagle hunters as they released each other’s eagles for today’s competition - the ability of the eagles to land on a prey down in the arena.
This was incredible despite the rudeness of some terribly ignorant tourists who got in the competitors way just to get their photos. Luckily most of us were more respectful.

    6. oktober 2019, Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 -1 °C

So in this race the couples register in pairs- the man tries to kiss the women whilst she beats him off with a whip!!!.... we didn’t see one woman kissed.... but there was some ferocious beating!!!
We thought men’s rights groups may be picketing next year!!!
