  • Undara Lava Tubes

    29.–30. jun. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

From Chilligoe, we planned our next few days of travel and activities. Pinnarendi Station was our first stop for the night, being close to Undara Lava Tubes and well-known for its stone-baked sourdough bread and pizzas. We had hoped to stay a couple of nights for Pizza, but unfortunately, they were booked out due to the school holidays in Qld. We did have a lovely breakfast, though, before heading to Undara.
The area we are travelling through has a long history of volcanic activity. We took the Wind-tunnel Tour, which involved walking through tunnels formed by a lava flow that has cooled slowly. These tunnels have really interesting colouring and texture and are home to the Bent-wing micro-bats, pythons, and huntsman spiders.

  • Talaroo Hot Springs

    29. jun.–1. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Our next stop in this volcanic area was a visit to Talaroo Hot Springs. This was a very friendly and well setup Park. It is located close to the Einasleigh River where you can go for a swim. The main attraction is the Hot Springs guided tours where you are treated to information on the geology and history of the area. At the end of the tour, you can spend around 40 minutes in the spring-fed pool.Les mer

  • The Colours of Cobbold Gorge

    1.–3. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

The last stop in this area was Cobbold Gorge. The park is privately run and provides guided tours of the Gorge. It is a slick setup and has very well-maintained facilities, including an infinity pool overlooking a dam. We were lucky enough to get one of the few private sites that overlooked a creek. It was a wonderful stay.Les mer

  • Machinery

    6.–8. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We drove from Barcaldine to Longreach to visit the Qantas Founders Museum. On the way, we stopped at Ilfracombe for a coffee and came across the Machinery Mile, a wonderful collection of trucks, farming equipment, and other miscellaneous equipment from past times.
Kari got a quick wash and polish before we headed for the first part of our aviation tour - the light and sound show.
The next morning we headed back for a guided tour of the planes on display and the heritage-listed original Qantas hanger before looking through their museum.

  • Julia Creek

    10. juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We spent the night in the Julia Creek Caravan Park, where we had hoped to experience their artesian bathhouse experience. Unfortunately, it is too popular, so we just enjoyed the amenities for the night.
While the park is, in general, your average caravan park, the whole community seems to be making a team effort to provide a top-notch tourist experience. The park has ample and immaculate facilities, free Wi-Fi, free bikes, and free access to the community swimming pool. Every Monday night, one of the community NFP groups offers Bush Dinners around the campfire.
The Information Centre also has amazing facilities and engaging/interactive historical displays. We really enjoyed the Dunnart feeding display, which occurs twice a day.
We managed to catch up with Trevor Blackman today at our next campsite at Corella Dam. He shared his experiences of the places we are going to and some sage advice.

  • Clem Walton Campsite - Corella Dam

    11.–12. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

After enjoying the sunrise at Corella Dam, we headed a little further down the track to another nearby campground. The road here was a little washed out by recent floods, so there were not many campers. After seeing the area, we decided to stop and spend the day relaxing. It was serene and picturesque, and there was so much birdlife.Les mer

  • Warning... Another Bird Post

    11.–12. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

I have never been to a place where you can see so many different types. We've identified 27 different species and there were many others where we only got glimpses that did not allow us to identify. This spot is very special.Les mer

  • Corella Dam to Mt Isa

    13.–14. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Sadly, we left the Clem Walton campground this morning. We now need to begin driving a little further between stops for a few days to get ourselves into the Northern Territory.
Our first stop today was to visit Fountain Springs, aka Redemption Rock in Australian Survivor 2021. This is also the location of the Crocodile Dundee scene in which Sue Charlton is nearly grabbed by a crocodile. Along the way, we also detoured along the Ballara Mining Heritage Trail to the Hightville Tunnel. There was supposed to be a bat colony in the tunnel, but we couldn't find any evidence of them.
Our next stop was the abandoned Mary Kathleen uranium mine - it was a place of mixed feelings as the mine is a scar on the natural landscape but the water is a beautiful colour. It is a sight to behold.
Lastly, we stopped for dinner at the Buffs Club in Mount Isa before spending the night at an overnight rest area.

  • Border Crossing

    14.–15. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Today was just driving. We made it to the Barkley Roadhouse early afternoon and caught up on some laundry before heading to the bar at happy hour! Lou and Phil provided excellent entertainment.

  • Southern Lost City

    16.–17. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today we entered our first NT National Park - Limmin NP. The area is rather remote and Graham enjoyed some extended 4WDing and river crossings. We had to retrieve our number plate after one of them.
We arrived at Southern Lost City just after midday, had some lunch and then took off on a relaxed walk through the amazing rock formations.

  • Trek to the Western Lost City

    17.–18. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After checking out tonights campsite we headed to the Nelson River Ranger Station to get the padlock combination to enter the Western Lost City track.
We travelled through water crossings, grasslands, low level scrubland and areas full of melaleucas, acacias and gums. Mostly the track was okay for us.... apart from a few spots where the scrub and trees encroached on our path. Two hours later and after travelling only 30 km we arrived at the Lost City.Les mer

  • Elsey NP

    20.–22. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We left Limmin NP and headed west along the Roper Highway arriving first at Mataranka Thermal Pools. We decided not to stop as it was extremely crowded. We continued on to Bitter Springs - this was much more to our liking.
Our overnights have been spent at the Jalmurark Campground. This morning, we walked to Mataranka Falls. It was an easy 4km stroll along the banks of the Roper River.

  • Up next is .... Kakadu

    25.–26. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

We stayed in the Lazy Lizard at Pine Creek to get some laundry done and have a cooler night under the A/C before heading into Kakadu. Saw some cool wildlife in town. We stopped at Ikoymarrwa Falls and Rockpools for a cool off on the way to National Park. Unfortunately, a couple of iconic areas were closed to the public right now (Yurmikmik and Maguk areas).Les mer

  • Jim Jim Falls

    26.–28. jul. 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

We arrived at the Jim Jim Campground (another amazing campsite) just before sunset. We set off in the morning for our walk to the Jim Jim falls.
It was a beautiful walk through monsoonal rainforest along Jim Jim creek and then some serious rock hopping. After about an hour we arrived at the Plunge Pool for a swim (before the crowds arrived). The water was cool and so very clear. Whilst out swimming, the skies opened up whilst we were relaxing at the falls. What an experience!Les mer

  • Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) Region

    28. juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Walked up to the Nawurlandja Lookout from where we could get a feeling of the immensity of the landscape. In the distance we could see Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) Rock and Anbangbang Billabong. We walked down to the billabong and saw the many birds for which this area is a refuge. Near Burrungkuy we viewed some more amazingly preserved rock art.Les mer

  • Learning new skills

    30. juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

For the day, Cathy spent a few hours with the women`s only Pardanas leaves weaving creating two bracelets alongside `Aunty`. Graham watched an indigenous man straighten a bamboo stick for a spear using a `woolybutt` tree bark fire.Les mer
