Rio de Janeiro - day 1

    January 15, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

After delicious breakfast and trying to figure out what we all want to see here we decided to take Uber to Maracanã Stadium to do the tour. Flo was checking everything out and was very happy 😄 I as not a big football fan found the tour also really cool and definitely better then the one we did one year ago in Madrid. After the tour we left outside waited ages for next taxi. The temperatures here are crazy 😅 in the center it was showing 38 degrees but we are not sure if that was correct… our next stop was museum of tomorrow (Museu do Amanhã) this place is not only impressive from outside but also really interesting inside. We usually do not go to museum but here we spent 3 hours checking the current exposition about Amazon rainforest and standard tour about universe, our planet, humans and future 👌🏼 it was super educational and interesting. Next to the museum was also a really cute local market with live music and the Olympic boulevard. This area is called Porto Maravilha and it’s relatively new area of Rio. We found there really cool food market and amazing graffiti wall made by famous artist from São Paulo Eduardo Kobra. As a Christmas gift we got from Flo’s parents tickets for Sugar Loaf mountain. I really wanted to go up for sunset and as we had fast track ticket we could also skip the line. So thankful for this fast track tickets (thank you Martin & Katrin ☺️) we overpassed around 1000 desperately waiting tourists, got to VIP lounge, got drinks for free and departed with next gondola up 😍. We enjoyed the views, got some food and drinks and watched amazing sunset 🤩 the prices in the restaurants up there were also reasonable and I didn’t find any price difference compared to the city. Although there were lot of people it didn’t felt that crazy. Due to two cable cars people spread in the area and we didn’t have to wait for the cable cars that long. We returned back to hotel quite late, tired and happy ☺️Read more

Rio de Janeiro - day 2

    January 16, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Today we wanted to take it slow 🙊 we departed 10:30 from hotel drop the laundry, got some cash and took taxi to the Royal Botanical Garden. You can either walk around by yourself or take the tour with golf caddy. We decided to walk and enjoy the park. It was really cool and calm 😍 we saw many trees and plants from Amazon rainforest, huge palm trees and orchid garden 😁 next stop was Parque Lage. Beautiful Vila and park built once for industrialist Henrique Lage and opened later for public. The Vila is very beautiful but due to Instagram this place got extremely popular. Inside of Vila there is supposed to be a nice cafe but we would have to wait for 1,5 hour to get a table. So we just took picture from outside and left to cafe we saw on the way. For the rest of the day we wanted to rent bikes and bike along the beach. Rio has a really good network of shared bikes. Unfortunately foreigners cannot use their app and the only possibility is to go to the self service machines (which not every bike station have). We went to 3 different stations, tried to put our details twice in but without success… what a shame that some things are just so complicated for foreigners 😅 luckily one American guy is offering bike rental close to Copacabana so for 10€ we got 2 bikes for next 2 hours. We drove 12 km along Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon beach till the Leblon Viewpoint. It was really amazing experience and we enjoyed it a lot 🤩 and we are already planning to go back to the beach other day 😍🇧🇷Read more

Rio de Janeiro - day 3

    January 17, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Today we wanted to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer on the top of Corcovado mountain. There are two ways to visit the site - special taxi which takes you below the statue to the visitor center and then hike up the hill or to take the rack railway Corcovado which takes you directly under the statues. As the train station is walking distance from our hotel the choice was clear for us. The train starts running from 7:00 in the morning so we decided to go directly in the morning and escape the crowds and heat. Unfortunately 6:40 there was already crazy queue 😅😅😅 luckily we managed to get on the first train and be one of the first ones on the top. We enjoyed the view took the pictures and returned back to our hotel quite early for hotel breakfast and chill by the pool. In the afternoon we planned to do the hike. Flo was not feeling well and we decided to relax for the rest of the day.Read more

Rio de Janeiro - day 4

    January 18, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Today was a very packed day. We spent the whole day in the city center, visited all the important sights and walked almost 15km. I finally persuaded Flo to take public bus in Rio (twice 🤣) otherwise we were always using Uber which is very affordable depending on distance we usually pay between 2-5€. Bus ride costs here around 0,8€ 😎 I really wish we would have these prices in Munich. Our first stop was the famous staircase Escadaria Selaron built by the artist Jorge Selaron in 23 years. It’s amazing collection of more than 2000 different tiles collected from more then 60 countries around the world. Unfortunately also this places became next insta hotspot and at the beginning of the staircase it was impossible to move 😅. Very close to the staircase is the Carioca Aqueduct and Cathedral of Rio. Cathedral has very unique form and it’s very ugly from outside and interesting from inside. Definitely something special. Maybe 15 minutes walk from the cathedral you can find another very important buildings of former capital city of Brazil - municipal theater and national library. It is possible to enter the library for free. It is the biggest library in Latin America with the collection of more than 9 million of books. Very impressive building and interior. After little break at nearby cafe we started to walk to the next famous library - Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading. On the way we saw very nice restaurant “comida por kilo” so after seeing the second library we sat for while and eat tasty and cheap lunch (lunch for 2 and 3 drinks for 10€). After checking clothes market, one more church and spending all our money in pharmacy 🤣 we were pretty tired. We took second bus up to the hill to the Santa Teresa district to have dinner and walk a bit around this art neighborhood. Santa Teresa is famous for its yellow tram, views over the city and restaurant Bar do Mineiro. This restaurant is famous for the best Feijoada in Rio. Feijoada is Brazilian National dish - stew of beans, sausage and meat served with rice, orange and spinach. So we of course had to try it. The food was good, not the best dish we ever ate but definitely tasty 👌🏼.Read more

Rio de Janeiro - day 5

    January 19, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

It’s our last day in Rio unfortunately 😢 we will depart tmr morning to our next stop - Ilha Grande. I really wanted to go hiking in Rio. As Flo follows the Motto: happy wife happy life we went hiking ❤️😂. To get to the starting point of the hike is adventure itself. You get out of the taxi by the entrance to the Favela Vidigal and then you have to go up by van or moto taxi for 5 reais per person. We were bit scared to drive up the hills by motorbike and wanted to take van. Unfortunately there were not enough people and we would have to wait for quite some time. So yeah we jumped on bike, tried to explain the drivers that it would be cool to get some helmets and that we want to drive slow 😂😂😂😂😂. We survived the ride up, paid small fee to the local community and started the hike. It took us 50 minutes up (it’s 3 km steep walk up) to reach the peak of the two brothers mountain. Omg I think we never sweat that much 😅😅😅😅 but I am very proud we did that the view was amazing and there were not many people up there 😍👌🏼. On the way down we stopped for a drink and start talking to really nice American couple. We decided to spend the rest of the day together and enjoy the afternoon in Ipanema beach. Guys played even ball game with locals and went to the nearby pub to watch football match. We got very tasty farewell dinner in beach club and watched sunset. We will probably meet Erik and Gabi in Ilha Grande in few days and later in Buenos Aires again 😁.Read more

    Ilha Grande - day 1

    January 20, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

We departed from Rio with the 8:20 bus to the small village Conceição de Jacareí one of the 3 ports to Ilha Grande (the one with the shortest distance to the island). The distance from bus terminal Novo Rio is only 122km and can be done under two hours. The buses in 4, 5 and 6 in the morning were completely sold out. I understood later why 😂 the drive took us 4 hours, I don’t even know how many car accidents and traffic jams we saw on the way 😒 once we finally reached Conceição de Jacareí we had two options - wait for 13:30 boat or take immediately the speed boat taxi. We decided for second opinion and we departed in few minutes. The boat was super fast and small, just 12 passengers and it was raining 😅😅😅 not very ideal conditions for see crossing 🤣 well we survived and decided not do sth like that again 🤣🙊. After very tasty and overpriced lunch (they changed us 3€ per person couvert and 10% service charge on the whole bill on top which we didn’t know before) we left to our Airbnb. We are still not a big fans of local cuisine so we want to cook here for next days instead. Shopping in local supermarket was fun and we managed to find everything we needed. In the afternoon we explored local village, book boat trip for tomorrow and washed Flo’s clothes again 🙊 the island is very beautiful and calm. It’s such a huge difference to busy Rio. We loved Rio but there is definitely something special about this place. Jungle, amazing beaches, good vibes and no cars 😍 people either walk here or take boat to other parts of the island. Adventure tourists can even walk once around the whole island it takes 4-5 days and the route is 70 km long.Read more

    Ilha Grande - day 2

    January 21, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

For today we booked the boat trip around the whole island. In total we had 5 stops (see picture n.2) and in each stop we spent +- 1 hour. Our first stop was small beach Cadaxo - famous for its rocks. The beach was nice but after a while it was really pack and people were even queuing to go up to the rocks to take pictures 😅. We were quite happy that we left after 40 minutes to our next stop. On the way to our next beach it started to rain heavily and it was very uncomfortable to sit on the boat 🙈. Luckily the rain was soon over and we arrived in Parnaioca, the beach where salt and sweet water mix, also part of natural protected area. 3rd stop was the beautiful Aventureito beach. This beach got famous for its beautiful lagoon and 45 degrees shaped palm tree. Here we had our longest stop so we got some drinks in the bar, swim and took a lot of photos 🤩. Then we drove shortly to Dos Meros beach. Popular place for snorkeling and scuba diving 🤿🌴. In Marquez we had very late lunch and then we departed back to Abraão. The trip was very cool and we were as always the only international tourists 😂. In the evening we went for a drink to the center and there was a concert and some big street food market, this place is really awesome 😁Read more

    Ilha Grande - day 3

    January 22, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today we had a very relaxing day and didn’t take many photos either 😁 we walked to beach number 5 which is around 40 minutes walk from our accommodation and spent the whole day there. After home made dinner in our Airbnb apartment we went to the center one more time, got some cake in street food bakery and milk shake for Flo 😍 we will definitely miss this place and would also not mind to spend few more days here. So until next time 😁😉Read more

    Paraty - day 1

    January 23, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

After 30 minutes boat and 2 hours bus ride we arrived in Paraty. Small colonial town also recognized by UNESCO. Paraty is small and charming old town. Small streets and canals reminded us a bit of Venice. This town used to be once very import port for transporting gold from Minas Gerais province to Portugal. Nowadays there are several festivals held during the year and tourists come here to try one the best restaurants in Brazil, visit Cachaca (local alcohol) factories and try local most popular cocktail Jorge Amado. Unfortunately it was raining heavily in the afternoon so we decided to skip the free walking tour and explore the town. We will continue sightseeing tomorrow 😉Read more

    Paraty - day 2

    January 24, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

Today at 11:00 we departed to our jeep tour to explore the National park Serra da Bocaina. The jeep tour lasted 6 hours and we visited 3 different waterfalls and 2 different cachaca production sites. During the visit of the waterfalls it even started to rain so we had the real jungle feeling. In the second cachaca factory we bought some small bottles for our bar 😁🍹 the tour was nice we would only wish to have sometimes more time and not to rush from A to B. Also the waterfalls in Chapada Diamantina were more spectacular. In the late afternoon we went for a walk to Paraty old town. Some streets were flooded due to heavy rain last night and that created perfect reflection of the buildings 😍. Paraty is very charming place to spend one or two nights. There are also plenty of things to do nearby like beaches in Trinidad. Boat tour to nearby island or hikes in mountains.Read more
