    São Paulo

    January 25, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Another night in the bus (this time I managed to take a picture of our business class bus seats) and we woke up in São Paulo. We got around 6 hours time to explore the city before heading to the airport. São Paulo has according to skyscanner where I always check the flight tickets 3 airports but the Airport Viracopos ist 120km away from São Paulo 😅😅 so it is same story as calling Memmingen Airport Munich West 🤣. Well back to the walk around São Paulo the town is huge, modern and in many ways it reminded us of Shanghai. Unfortunately you also see the poverty and lot of homeless people everywhere building out of trash shelters in the parks. We took Subway and drove to center to eat breakfast 😋 it was nice change to the hotel breakfasts (eggs, bread and fruit always 🤣) to order sth different. We walked around the city, entered 2 shopping malls which were closed due to celebration day (São Paulo celebrated today its 469 year anniversary), went to the cathedral and finished our tour in Food Market. Following Saša’s adviced I had to order local speciality mortadella sandwich 😋😍. The time in the city was over and we took the bus to the airport. We landed in Foz do Iguaçu in the evening and were even lucky to spot the Iguazu river and waterfalls from the airplane ✈️❤️Read more

    Iguazu - day 1

    January 26, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Our trip around Brazil is coming to the end. We are sleeping till Saturday in Foz do Iguazu (the city on the Brazilian side of the waterfalls) before continuing our journey to the next country. From sightseeing point of view is today our last day in Brazil. We want in next 2 days explore the Iguazu waterfalls - largest waterfall system of the world. Waterfalls are right on the border between Brazil and Argentina with Brazil covering only about 20% of the falls. After breakfast, laundry and food shopping we were ready to start sightseeing. From the city it takes around 30 minutes to get to the visitor center of the waterfalls. We bought our tickets and departed with 11:00 bus to the waterfalls. The waterfalls are located 13km from the visitor center and there are shuttle buses included in the ticket price (+- 15€ per person). Once you get out of the bus there is a 1.4km long walk along different viewpoints. The views are since the beginning amazing but the views are getting every time better and you get every time much closer 👌🏼🇧🇷 the highlight is the walk on Devil’s throat. This part was quite packed and we got wet but it was incredible and totally worth it 😍. After some rest in visitor center we drove by bus back. As it was still early and we had some energy left we decided to visit the bird park right across the street. It’s actually more rescue center then the standard zoo and we really liked it. The walk takes around 1,5 hour and can be really well combined with the falls. We returned to our hotel happy and tired and decided to rest a bit for the rest of the day. It’s 36 degrees here right now and we are definitely not used to that 🥵Read more

    Iguazu - day 2

    January 27, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

After quite uncomfortable and warm night we woke up at 7:30, got ready, went to the breakfast and departed 8:30 with shared van to Argentina. We were first thinking to go to the waterfalls by public transport but we would need to exchange buses and get out of the bus on the borders. Local transport agency can send to the border controls your passport details beforehand and therefore you don’t need to wait. So it was definitely worth the money to do it this way. Only 45 minutes later we were already in Argentinian Iguazu Waterfalls visitor center and buying our entrance tickets. It was for us quite disappointing that the Devil’s Throat path is completely closed since October 2022 and Lower Circuit was also partially closed. Compared to Brazilian side, Argentinian side has 3 main hiking trails - Lower Circuit, Upper Circuit and Devil‘s Throat. Unfortunately we could see just part of it and the paths were packed with tourists. In general we really enjoyed the views and excursion but we both agreed that we liked the Brazilian side more. At 3pm we got picked up from visitor center and drove back to Brazil. After some rest in hotel room we went to the city center. Flo made some clothes shopping and got new haircut 😁. As farewell dinner (our last night in Brazil) we went to Chinese restaurant nearby and the portions were huge 🤣, food was super cheap (we paid 13€ for food and 3 drinks) and delicious. We took the rest with us for tomorrow lunch as we gonna be traveling to our next country 😉🇵🇾Read more

    Encarnacion - day 1

    January 28, 2023 in Paraguay ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

After breakfast we needed to cross the border to Paraguay. Next to Foz do Iguaçu there is a city called Ciudad del Este in Paraguay known as Shopping paradise. People usually cross the border for a day trip and go shopping. If you want to continue traveling around Paraguay it is necessary to do the immigration procedure on both borders. There is an intercity bus which stops on both borders so we took the bus for 24 reais both of us and drove to Brazilian side. The immigration didn’t took long and we decided instead of waiting for next bus to cross the friendship bridge by feet and make the immigration in Paraguay. All went smoothly and in 10 minutes the bus arrived which took us to the bus terminal. Not long time after our arrival the bus to Encarnación was leaving. We book premium seats, bought some drinks and departed on our next journey to the most beautiful city in Paraguay. The drive was quite long and bus was stopped all the time 😅 even people selling drinks and food got sometimes in and tried to sell you everything 😁. Finally we arrived in our beautiful hotel and went to relax to our rooftop pool before heading to town. We originally decided to go to Encarnación / Paraguay for one reason to see the carnival. Unfortunately either I read wrong information in internet or the dates have changed but the carnival is starting instead of 28.1. on 4.2. 😢. As our hotel is walking distance from the Sambodromo we wanted to check it anyway. Luckily today they are making final trial of the carnival and just for 10.000 guaranies (1.2€) you can come and watch it 😁🇵🇾 so the plan for evening was settled. We walked around Costañera (coastal pedestrian road) till the San Jose Beach (actually Paraguay has no sea but the river Parana is at this point so big that you get this sea feeling anyway) we got nice dinner at the beach and watch sunset. You can see on the other side of the river Argentinian city Posadas. Around 8:30 we arrived back to Sambodromo to watch the carnival. I got super tasty cocktail just for 1.2€ 🤣 (all the cocktails were between 1.2 - 2€) and then we had to wait for more then hour for the carnival to start. Quite a lot of people came and the atmosphere was amazing. I can only imagine how great it will be next week when the place is full and all the people are dressed up 🤩🇵🇾 it was definitely night to be remembered ❤️Read more

    Encarnacion - day 2

    January 29, 2023 in Paraguay ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

After relaxing time we left our hotel around 2:30 in the afternoon and drove to the 2 Jesuit Missions nearby Encarnación. Jesuit Missions are very important part of the Latin America’s history. Only in Paraguay around 140.000 people were part of the different Missions. Unfortunately in late 18th century all the members of the missions were killed by very brutal means and most of the missions were destroyed as they were looking for the mission treasures which of course didn’t exist. Nowadays 2 of the missions in Paraguay are part of the UNESCO heritage - Jesús de Tavarangüe and La Santisima Trinidad de Parana (the most preserved Mission in Latin America). The trip was very interesting and we could also learn from our driver some things about life in Paraguay. He drove us till the Paraguay border as we were leaving this country and heading to our next stop ~ Buenos Aires. Border crossing went smoothly only Flo got bit angry when the lady thought that he might need visa to enter Argentina 🤣 you know Flo is always so proud how good German passport is 😁🙊… so good night Buenos Aires see you in 12 hours 😁👍Read more

    Buenos Aires - day 1

    January 30, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After 13 hours long bus journey (we had 1 hour delay) we arrived in Buenos Aires. We had quite a comfortable night and were ready to walk a bit around the city. Our Airbnb was available from 15 o’clock so we had some time left. We dropped the backpacks in bus terminal and went by metro to the Obelisk of Buenos Aires where we had very tasty and in our opinion quite expensive breakfast. According the internet the current exchange rate is 1€ = 200 Argentinian Peso. So when we calculated our breakfast bill of 4600 pesos we thought hm Argentina is expensive 😅. We had some Brazilian money left so we thought let’s exchange it. Flo said the rate is 30 for 1 brasilian real but the lady told us no it’s 65… it was very weird so we started to make a research 🧐 there are actually two different exchange rates on the market, the official one and blue rate from black market. Current blue rate is 1€ = 400 pesos so we were immediately thinking how can we get it. After some research in restaurant and our Airbnb we managed to get a deal 390 pesos per 1€ 🤩💪🏼 that was actually the success of our late afternoon before that we made very intense sightseeing and visited many places our dear Sabine suggested 😉 we walked around the city center, saw president palace,
Parlament, national Bank, Palace Barolo and new modern quarter Puerto Madero which reminded us a bit of Pudong area in Shanghai. We really liked the city and also our cool neighborhood Palermo where we booked the Airbnb which is also awesome. This city has a really cool vibes and doesn’t seem as dangerous as Rio or São Paulo (at least our first impression).

Day trip to Uruguay from Buenos Aires

    January 31, 2023 in Uruguay ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Just 1 hour away by ferry from Buenos Aires you can find beautiful colonial town Colonia del Sacramento ~ popular place for day tourists or people continuing their journey to other parts of Uruguay. This town is very small and tourists can see everything in 1 - 2 hours. There is beautiful old town which is also part of UNESCO and nice coast. Inside of the old town there are plenty of cute restaurants and bars to enjoy traditional Uruguay dish sandwich Chivito or just get drinks or coffee. It was for us very surprising to see how organized, cleaned and maintained the city was. Also the prices were very close to European ones 😁🥲 all in all we really enjoyed it and would recommend it to sb who has some time left in Buenos Aires but it is definitely not must see in our opinion. In the evening we had a reservation in restaurant La Cabrera which Sabine recommended. The food, drinks and service were beyond our expectations and we probably never eat such a great food. At the end our bill was 64€ but considering steaks for 2, bottle of great red one, salad, entrance and service it was not bad at all 🤩👌🏼Read more

    Arrival in Patagonia

    February 1, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Although our flight was departing in the afternoon we were quite lazy to do something. Flo also needed to catch up with work and I had also one very important mission to complete 😁🙊. In Patagonia there are less opportunities to get a cash better say get a cash for better rate so it is advised to stock up cash before leaving any big city. We transferred over western union 400€ which is with the blue rate more then 160.000 Argentinian Pesos 😅 my task for the morning was to collect the money which can be quite tricky as not all western union offices has enough cash. Firstly there was an issue with my passport and also the office had only 300€ equivalent available so they sent me to another office. There after 15 minutes waiting I got 300€ equivalent but the other transaction of 100€ was not working so I had to wait again. Our check out was quite soon and I still needed to change and finish packing. My internet was also not working so I could not contact Flo who was already very worried… 11:40 I was finally done and left the office with crazy amount of cash (they had only 500 pesos bills 🤣). I decided to grab a taxi and stay safe plus it was also much faster then walking all the way back 2 km. I arrived 10 minutes before check out to our flat, Flo already packed 90% of our things so I just quickly finished the rest. After delicious lunch in cafe across the street we left to the airport to take the flight to El Calafate the hiking paradise of Argentina 🇦🇷. It has been my dream for very long and the excitement was very high. After long flight (almost 3 hours) we landed more then 2000 km southern from Buenos Aires. Yes Argentina is soooo huge. We will be spending some time in El Calafate but firstly it was time to board probably the most scenic bus ride of our lifes ❤️ you check the photos by yourself 😉 in the reality the views were even better and we cannot wait to spend here next 2 weeks.Read more

    El Chaltén - day 1

    February 2, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

The weather forecast looked for next two days very promising so we wanted to use the good weather and do the top activities in the area. Normally if the tourists come just for a day it is recommended to do the hike to Laguna de los tres - the most remarkable hike in the area to the beautiful turquoise lake right below the famous mountain Fitz Roy. The hike is also very challenging and not for everyone. The route is in total 25 km long with the very steep and technical part at the end before reaching the lake. On average the hike takes between 8-10 hours. We were unsure if we can do it. We needed to get food and drinks for the day as not an opportunity to buy something and also to rent sticks. The gear rental shop was opening at 9 o’clock so it could be too late for departure. Patagonian summer days are fortunately long enough (sunset around 22:30) so we departed 9:20 and left for one of our best adventures so far. Quite quickly we gained the first high meters and overpassed lot of not very fit hikers. The trail wasn’t that packed so we could easily move along different viewpoints and river crossings till the small rest stop under the “1km left // hard part is starting the trail will take 1 more hour” sign. Here the part was very steep, rocky and slippery. People were also already going down so there was traffic in both directions. Totally exhausted we arrived on the top and we’re rewarded with magnificent views of the lagoon and Fitz Roy mountain. I continued alone to the bottom of the lake until reaching on the left side the viewpoint of laguna Sucia. We had nice lunch and rest a bit before going back to town. The way down was long and we could feel the lack of energy after a long hike. We arrived after 9 hours back to village tired and happy. As a reward we got some drinks and dinner and went to bed. Next day gonna be an adventure as well.Read more

    El Chaltén - day 2

    February 3, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

It’s 7 in the morning and we are still quite tired because of our hike yesterday. Okay Flo we Need to rush, the bus is departing in 45 minutes… yes, instead of some relax we booked a bicycle trip to Laguna del Desierto. Laguna del Desierto is lesser visited part of this area. It’s a very beautiful lake located 37km from El Chaltén and it’s used by hikers and cyclists for border crossing on foot to Chilean city Villa O’higgins. We got transported by van to Laguna del Desierto. From there we had the whole day time to return back to El Chalten on mountain bikes. The way takes usually around 4 hours and you are driving though the most remote and amazing landscapes one can ever see. Although the road is not a bicycle path you hardly meet any car. We also got a map with all the points of interests along the way including some tips for exploring our starting point as well. The trip was extremely beautiful and memorable. The path was quite difficult to be honest. In Germany I would have never problem riding bike for 37km but with the mountain bike on this terrain it’s a different story. We passed two beautiful waterfalls, 1000+ viewpoints 😂, many bridges, beautiful lake Laguna Condor where we had lunch and took a nap 💤, and we saw several glaciers. The path was very beautiful and no pictures can express the beauty of this place. We celebrated our amazing day with some cocktails in Happy Hour and I cooked for Flo his favorite food.Read more
