  • Touring Beside the Clearwater

    June 10, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We enjoyed a whole day of nearly flat riding along the Clearwater river. We had to ‘portage’ over the guardrail at one point early in the day when the bike path became too bumpy, but there was no path connecting to the smooth highway.
For one snack break we sat under a tree at a former dairy farm. Dave and his wife treated us to strawberries from their garden and ice water from their well. Good living in their generous hospitality!! A highlight of this trip.
Riding along the river is super peaceful. In some places, no guardrails were present to obstruct the view of the river about 100 feet away. The water flows pretty fast for a wide river, sometimes tumbling over small rapids.
At the end of a long day of about 65 miles, we camped along the river in time to enjoy a cup of tea while watching the sun set.

  • Lolo Pass Adventures

    June 14, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We made it up and over Lolo Pass yesterday.
The territory in eastern Idaho has no cell reception. For about 65 miles, so we were unexpectedly out of range in an area with few campsites and no services; no convenience stores, no restaurants, just about nuthin! We made it through with a pile of days of climbing, so enough about that.
The Lochsa River is Spectacular! Class 4 rapids are made by streams that sun as they joyfully join the river. We ate on a sandbar one day. We camped 50 feet from the river once. Biking is a great way to see this territory because I can hear crickets and birds on the shore side in one ear, and the river in the other.
    It’s GLORIOUS!
On our way down from Lolo, we got nailed by an hour long rainstorm, including a half hour of driving hail coming in at about a 30 degree angle from the ground. Whew! Glad to be out of that. Thunder and lightning continued on and off through the night, but we stayed dry in our tents. This morning it’s mixed clouds and blue skies.
We visited with the other riders last night in Missoula. We will see if we can keep up. Today we resupply. Thank you Bonnie for sending me a package of supplies that I will pick up at Adventure Cycling HQ.
Once we restock, we’ll head onward.

  • Zero Day in Missoula

    June 14, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We had a ‘zero-mile’ day today. We visited Adventure Cycling Association HQ where we revised our route based on the knowledgeable staff advise. We picked up supplies, including a box of goodies from Bonnie.
    And, I got a haircut

  • Views from the Shoulder

    June 16, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Yesterday and today have been riding along Highway 200.
We began the day with errands to the post office for mailing unneeded stuff home, and REI and Adventure Cycling Association HQ. I guessed my bike weighed 71 pounds. Alas, it was 89. Oh well, we are over Lolo Pass.
A highlight for the day was getting an on-the-spot adjustment to my loose rear wheel bearings and brake. I met Marlena in the post office and she told me about her Bike Doctor work. Marlena called ahead and Eric met me at the door, then Don touched up my bike beautifully! Such a great while traveling!!!
Last night we camped along the river. It was so peaceful and beautiful, confirming why this ride is so attractive.
On the left card and trucks. Sometimes using a good shoulder, sometimes a leftover scrap of narrow asphalt or a guardrail close to the white line. Cars and trucks are generally thoughtful fellow travelers.
On the right and ahead are amazing landscapes and vistas. The river beside the highway is like a calf wanting milk. She bangs up against the hillside, gets rebuffed and turns aside, only to bang back up against the hillside again and again. Each time, we are treated to a breathtaking view of a winding river wand it’s banks. Such a treat and a big reason why I came here.
We are in Lincoln Montana now planning to camp nearby.

  • Eastward Ho!

    June 17, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We crossed the continental divide at Rogers Pass on Saturday, including lunch beside the river.
Along the way, Geoff from Adventure Cycling said hello on the highway as he and his wife were heading to Rogers Pass for a hike. What a treat to see a familiar face.
We couldn’t find a place to stay for miles that evening. Fortunately, Edward and Hillary took us in. They let us sleep in their yard to the sound of chickens and ducks. They fed us popcorn around a backyard campfire, and fed us a Father’s Day breakfast in their home. And they let us use their shower!!!
This is the kind of treat that makes a trip extraordinary.😊😊❤️❤️. Great conversation with generous people. Wow!
We made it to Great Falls Montana with aid from powerful tailwinds from the west; so strong that we stayed on an eastward highway instead of veering north because they would have been too potent as a sidewind. This made for an exhilarating ride on one slight downhill where we rode as far as we could see to the horizon in 20 minutes. I was pedaling in my top gear of 52/11 with little effort. Fun!

  • Mostly Cloudy!

    June 19, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

The photos tell the story. We traveled from Stanford Montana to Lewiston Montana under cloudy skies. We went off route on a quite side road and had a friendly lunch at a saloon in Utica. Most of the days ride was under cloudy skies and into headwinds.
When we got to Lewiston, we barely got our tents up before a pelting rain began. Then we marveled at the clouds nearby. The front end of the storm brought hail and strong winds. I weighted down my tent and climbed inside where the wind pushed the tent walls inward.
Fortunately, the storm passed over and we woke to blue skies with clouds in the distance.
    Eastward we go!

  • Rainbow Day

    June 20, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Yesterday was an adventure made up of delights and challenges. We left Great Falls and headed about 57 miles east to the Sundown Motel in Stanford, MT where we were greeted by its delightful manager Gayle. We made good time with the tailwinds, which was nice because I got a flat in my Kevlar-lined gatorskin front tire. Just a piece of glass. It had been raining on us for a short bit, but the sun came out right at the start of flat repair, so yay!
The scenery and the wildflowers and the birdsong were a constant joy throughout the day. We followed Otter Creek for quite a way as it meandered around the highway showing off little twists and turns filled with plants.
Near the end of the day, we saw the rainbow in the picture. It was incredibly bright. We stared at it for a while on amazement.

  • Headwinds Are Not My Friend

    June 21, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

Crossed the Continental Divide AGAIN! How many are there? I think that was the last one. Had headwinds all day long, some quite strong, making the ride like an uphill climb on flat terrain. Made about 56 miles from Lewiston to Winett. Eastward and onward, hoping to make it 77 miles today.Read more

  • Beautiful Vistas on a ‘Badumpbump’ Road

    June 22, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Clear blue sky over green fields is such a great soul food! It never gets old.
Today was 76 miles of riding across a territory with only one town at the 44 mile mark. I was apprehensive, so we stayed in a motel last night and got ourselves fed and on the road at 7:30. Finished riding at 6 pm.
In the ‘thrush is stranger than fiction’ category, we encountered a piece of a windmill tower that fell off a truck yesterday. You can see the picture. What a hoot!
For lunch, we sat by the road and watched a herd (?) of horses. Later a deer stared at us until we stopped and then BOUNDED away. How do they make it look so effortless?
Parts of the road were truly crummy,: no shoulder and ‘badumpbump’ dips every 10 to 50 feet. Each one is 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep and when my rear wheel hits them it’s like a punch to the spine. It’s a first world problem, though and overwhelmed by the views and birdsong.
I heard a birdsong today that I’ve never heard before which was a delight!

  • Type 2 Fun

    June 23, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

The last few days have consisted of type 2 fun, the kind that is an arduous adventure in the moment, but makes a good story later.
On Friday, we set out from Jordan with a good breakfast at the Summit Corrall. About 17 miles into the ride we got to road construction that we’d heard about. They weren’t working that day, probably because of threatening rain, so no one was around to shuttle us around 10 miles of packed dirt road into a stiff headwind. It took about three hours to cross the 10 miles. We couldn’t make the planned 66 miles, and had to hold up at a the Flowing Wells rest stop. It poured rain on us, so we stayed cozy in our tents until the rain stopped mid morning.
Yesterday, it was a 36 mile ride up and down rolling hills for about 25 of the miles. Each hill is about 100 to 250 feet of climbing, a blip for a car and a challenge for a bike.
Richard encountered a bent tooth on his smallest front chain ring. While we were having a snack and fixing Richards bike, a local man came out to ask if we needed anything. The bar where we’d planned to lunch was closed, which meant we didn’t have as much good food as we expected. He brought us some chicken! People are so kind when they feel safe! That’s type 2 fun; running low on food and experiencing human kindness a and generosity as a result❤️
Last night we camped at Circle, MT with a beautiful view of a stream.
