  • Big Sur II

    26 juillet 2017, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Day 24: I had the first night in a tent after days. Not that pleasant but definitely better than a car.
Antonia decided to do a mountain hike. I wanted to explore the costs of Big Sur.
So I drove to Monterey and the cliffs look amazing. We got a step closer to paradise.
Suddenly I was closely to work in my vacation. I went to a restroom and when I came out I've seen the party. One collapsed old woman - a police car, a turntable ladder and a ambulance 🤔
Anyway after I was going to Fisherman's Wharf (of Monterey) I ate a burger and enjoyed the sun.
At the end I drove to Pebble Beach seeing the cost there.
On my way back I stopped at the pull outs of Hwy 1 especially the Bixby Creek Bridge.
After all I planned to have a look at Pfeiffer Beach. Google told me that it is not closed yet. But when I reached the Bixby Creek Bridge it was almost 7pm. So I returned to the campground.

  • Sequoia

    27 juillet 2017, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Day 25: We got up very early to get to Sequoia national park. On the way we stopped at "Wiener Schnitzel". But honestly they didn't havea Wiener Schnitzel! Just Burger and things like that like MC Donald's.
Anyway we continued to the national park and reached it at about 1pm.
The trees there were extremely tall and huge. Very impressive. From the top of Moro Rock we had such an amazing view over the national park.
After all we decided to camp outside the park to make the upcoming trip shorter.
But we didn't really found a place to stay. So we drove all the way back to the west cost again. To Morro Bay this time. So it gonna be a short drive to Santa Barbara the next day.
We arrived at around 1am. A long driving day has come to an end.

  • Santa Barbara

    28 juillet 2017, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Day 26: We had a long sleep before we started the day. And the day wasn't that nice.
A lot of clouds and dust has welcome us when we woke up.
We drove to the downtown of Morro Bay where we saw the Morro Rock. But the city wasn't something special to us.
So we continued to Santa Barbara quickly. Honestly all the clouds followed us along the coast.
In Santa Barbara we met two guys from Austria. They both are on a one year roadtrip to southern Argentina.
We joined them and so we camped together near Santa Barbara.

Day 27: This was a lazy day. It took 'til 12pm until all of us were awake.
Antonia decided to join the Austrian guys for a few days because their trip is more flexible than mine.
But before we explored Malibu together. The first city on a coast with a blue sky and no clouds. The real beach was/ is extremely small. But the city itself is nice.
I wanted to get closer to Barstow/ Death Valley so I drove a little bit to a campground. There I neither find any place for a tent nor for my car.
So I was looking for I quiet place to park the car and to sleep in it.

  • Historic Route 66 / Barstow

    30 juillet 2017, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

Day 28 (1): Today I had a lot of impressions so I split it.
When I woke up I had a phone call with Dan one of my travel buddies in 2015. He's actually also in the USA and gonna fly back one day earlier from LA as well. Maybe he joins me or I join him for a while. Would be great!
My first stop was Barstow. I drove the first part of the historic Route 66 to get there. The landscape beside the road was great!
In Barstow I visit an old railroad depot. Afterwards I went to Galico Ghost Tours an old ghost town.
After all I continued to Death Valley. On my way I saw the tallest thermometer of the world. On the photo the temperature cannot be read but there were 108 degrees (~42 in Celsius) 😰

  • Death Valley

    30 juillet 2017, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 42 °C

Day 28 (2): Death Valley. O my gosh!
On the way to get there it got hotter and hotter. The highest temperature I read was 123 degrees (~50,5 in Celsius)!!!
On one photo you see the result of beeing 10 minutes outside the car. I drove to Zabriskie Point, Dante's View, Golden Canyon, Artist Drive, Devil's Golf Course
and Badwater (the deepest and hottest point of the northern hemisphere).
In the evening I wanted get to a campground. But before I had to refuel. But my credit card struggled. So I took my last cash to get enough gas to get to Las Vegas. There I recognized that my credit card is blocked. But my depit card still works at ATM machines.
Anyway no campground. I decided to check in at the hostel one day earlier. One night more in the city that never sleeps.

Day 29: I got to Hoover Dam. A huge dam that connects Nevada and Arizona. So when I walked over the dam I reached my last state - Arizona 🌵🙌 But it was very touristic there, too touristic.
Afterwards I drove to the Red Rock Canyon driving the Scenic Loop Drive.
When I returned to the hostel I had a nap, washed my clothes and went to the city seeing some Casinos and the Bellagio. Honestly I didn't see the fountains show. I wanted to see the midnight show, waited there for 30 minutes but nothing happened.

  • Zion

    1 août 2017, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Day 30: I drove to St. George to see a beautiful Mormons temple. Then I continued to Zion.
The way to get there was awesome. The Highway had a speed limit of 75 mph (130 kmh). Mostly there is a speed limit of 65 mph. But in America it is necessary otherwise they would kill each other. Americans aren't the best drivers! Additionaly the landscape beside the highway was such amazing. And ja, today I drove across three states. I started in Nevada, passed Arizona and arrived in Utah.
When I reached the Zion and waited for the shuttle bus I got to know Savannah and Ian. They came from Bryce Canyon.
We spent the day together doing a hike and taking a shower at a small creek.
After all we went to a free campsite close to the national park eating some hotdogs and marshmallows on a campfire. Tomorrow we wanna get up early hiking to Angel's Landing. They gonna drive all the way to the west coast tomorrow.

  • Bryce Canyon

    2 août 2017, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Day 31: Wow! The Bryce Canyon is the most amazing and beautiful national park I've seen so far!
At around 2am there was a thunderstorm. Because of that Savannah and Ian continued their ride to California. I didn't want to stay alone and decided to drive to the nearest town to the Bryce Canyon. When I got there I slept for a while and drove into the national park very early to see the sunrise. It was beautiful!
Afterwards I parked my car at the main carpark and... felt asleep again 🙈
When I woke up the carpark was full and people were everywhere. I got ready and hiked the Navajo Loop Trail. I loved it!
After I returned to the car I had a shower which was offered there.
Afterwards I continued to Lake Powell.
So the last driving week has begun. Today in one week I gonna return my car!

  • Antelope Canyon

    3 août 2017, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Day 32: Bryce or Antelope Canyon? They both are but
    beauties themselves!
For exactly one month I left Düsseldorf for that adventure. A month full of impressions, tons of miles, sleepless nights and experiences.
Today I planned to see Horseshoe Bend and the Antelope Canyon. I definitely found a new favourite state - Arizona! 🌵 The landscape is such amazing. You see red rocks everywhere!
In the morning I had an American Breakfast before I drove to Glen Canyon Dam. This Dam blocks the water of Powell Lake.
After I took some photos I got to the registration point to get a ticket for an Antelope Canyon tour.
Before it started I was going to Horsehoe Bend. There I got a lil bit confused because one phone has shown 11am the other one 12am. So I asked other people for the time. But nobody around me was able to speak english and to understand a simple question like "What time is it?". So asked them using my hands and phones.
The ticket for the tour wasn't that cheap but it was that worth it! The Antelope Canyon is one of the best spots for taking photos.
After I returned to the car I continued to the next canyon - the Grand Canyon! 🏔

And then then I got to know the police 🙈
We used to say that we join friends and to camp on a site of someone else who we asked before.
So I tried this in the Grand Canyon as well. I found my "friends" and asked the ranger. But he told me that he honestly had to forbidden it. One site, one family.
Then I returned to my car which parked on the passenger car park.
Suddenly there was a massive light behind my car. So before I got ticket that I parked there I wanted to talk to the ranger.
I got off my car and directly I heard "Go back in your car sir. Shut the door!". So I did it and a police officer came to me. Before that I didn't know that the police was standing behind me. I told that I had a long drive, all campgrounds are full and I need to rest for a while before I continue the ride because I'm really tired.
The officer told me that I'm allowed to camp in the national forest and that there is a car park but that I had to leave the park.
So I drove all the way back found the national forest sign but no car park entry. Anyway I need to find a car park for overnight parking like the nights before.

  • Grand Canyon

    4 août 2017, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Day 33: Last national park, last canyon. Today I've explored the wideness of Grand Canyon.
Well the beginning of the was extremely lazy. I was very tired and fell asleep again and again.
But I got out of my car some time and started my trip to the Grand Canyon.
Because I was really tired and alone I decided not to hike a trail. Instead I drove to all the outlook points along the Rim Trail.
Suddenly it started raining and I returned.
I drove on to Seligman - an historic Route 66 town.
When I got there I checked in at a motel. The host is a German from Freiburg.
He told me some stories about the Route 66. For example the Disney movie 'cars' was born on the route between Seligman and Kingman. There you can found all cars. The tow truck you see in a photo.
At the end of day I went to a German restaurant eating a German Bratwurst.
Afterwards I fell in my definitely needed bed. The rooms of the motel are all self designed with their own topic. I took the Hollywood room.

  • Historic Route 66

    5 août 2017, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 38 °C

Day 34: I spent my day on the historic Route 66 today.
First I visited the Grand Canyon Caverns (okay, yesterday wasn't the last part of canyons). Once they found bones of dinosaurs there. The cavern may be the oldest, deepest, darkest, largest and quietest.
The next stop was Kingman. I'm happy that I spent my night in Seligman. That town is definitely more historical. Kingman is more commercially than historical.
Afterwards I stayed on the Route 66 and reached Oatman. That town was such amazing! Oatman is an old gold mining town which is crossed by the Route 66. An old town with old shops, saloons, restaurants, ..., that is still alive! One cool thing is that there are wild mules which cross the street and live in the town.
Then I continued and the ride was just epic! The Route 66 crossed the desert. I had just me, my car, an incredible wideness and country music of course! Just thru the middle of nowhere how they used to say! #lifeisgood #travelingisgood
After all I got to Lake Havasu and had a look at the Old London Bridge.
Tonight I decided to book for this and the upcoming night in El Centro a lodge room which is quiet the same price like a campground.

  • El Centro

    6 août 2017, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

Day 35: This day I used to get closer to San Diego. I chose El Centro for it.
On my way to get there I crossed my first sand desert. All along my way I saw nothing than desert.
When I arrived I rested for a while then I continued to Salton Sea.
The Salton Lake is the largest lake of California and has an extremely high salt concentration.
After I took some photos I returned to the hostel.
That day wasn't that excited and El Centro isn't the nicest city I've seen. But it is quiet close to Mexico and you can feel it! Around you are all those Mexican and spanish speaking people.

Day 36: Pacific coast you got me back. Today I reached San Diego the most famous surfer city of the US.
Well today I didn't saw any surfer 'cause I've been at the wrong beach but tomorrow I will.
This day I just got to know the city and well it showed me its beauty!
The longest walk today I had while I was looking for cash. At Mission Beach I saw two ATMs and both were out of order. So I went to Sea World to use the machine there but it was in a payable area. Okay let's go all the way back to another ATM where I got my money. After I returned to Mission Beach I saw an ATM in every fucking store! 🙈

  • San Diego II

    8 août 2017, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Day 37: San Diego - after Chicago you conquered another place in my heart! 🌴🌴🌴
After a lazy start I decided to see the Coronado Beach. I had to pass the downtown for it. I saw tons of palms all along the streets and military US ship which was very impressive. This one was a museum so I was allowed to take photos.
Okay, but I wanted to see the Coronado Beach.
So I took the bus to Coronado Island and saw the richness itself. All you saw were mansions and a huge golden good looking Coronado Beach. This one must be the most beautiful beach of San Diego. My opinion. Additionally there aren't this tons of people like at the Mission Beach for example.
The next step was the Ocean Beach. It was not so gorgeous like the Coronado Beach but there were waves and where you find waves you find surfers! Not that much but I saw a few. Honestly I wasn't able to take photos of them because they were to far away.
At the end of day I went to the Sunset Cliffs and yes there were pure sunset cliffs! I saw the most amazing and wonderful sunset I've ever seen! 🌅

  • Tijuana

    9 août 2017, Mexique ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Day 38: Muchos saludos de México! 🌵
Today I left the USA and jumped over the border to Tijuana.
Better to say: I jumped into a new world. Yesterday I wrote about pure richness. Today - just a few miles more southern - I gonna write about pure poverty.
The main street where I arrived "Av Revolución"was was very touristic and every two metres someone was speaking to me to sell me something.
So I wanted to go off that street very quickly.
I went into backstreet and there it was the Mexican lifestyle. All along the street musicans with their Mexican hat on played salsa music and people danced on the street.
Yes, this definitely was a good place to rest. So I chose a restaurant and had a Mexican lunch. It was delicious!
Afterwards I took a taxi to the beach. That easy? Not in Mexico! I walked about hundred blocks to find a taxi that brought me there. Not every taxi brings you everywhere. But the price was so cheap! I paid 1 dollar for a 20 minutes ride.
At the beach I enjoyed the seaside and was able to stand next to the border with nice drawings on it. You was able to see helicopters of the US military for border protection at all time.
At the end of the day I drank a coconut drink 🌴

Before I got here I read in the internet "in Tijuana everybody speaks English". Never! The border officiers and the hostel stuff was able to but the rest? Mostly when they spoke spanish to me I was able to understand them 💪 But I wasn't able to reply 🙈 So I got hands and it worked 🙌

Day 39: What a day! I got up very early at Playas de Tijuana to get to the downtown again.
There I visited El Popo Mercado before I crossed the border again.
Back in the USA I packed my stuff and drove all the way up to LA. Driving in LA is horrible!
First I got to my final hostel, checked in and stored my whole luggage there.
Afterwards I drove to the airport to return my car. After I did it it wasn't so easy to get back to Venice. A lot of people and cars.
Well at about 7am I started the day and at 9pm I came to the hostel after returning the car. I was definitely done with that day!

But hey - I did it! After exactly 7.745 miles (12.464 km) I reached my final destination! 🌴🎉🍹💪

    Day 40: Hollywood is calling!
This day I used to feel the film experience of LA.
I recognized how huge LA is. It took about 2 hrs to get to northern Hollywood.
So I started in the north seeing all those film studios. Honestly I also found a memorial for Chester at the Warner Bros. studios.
The way along the studios brought me to the Walk of Fame.
At all I did a little hike to see the Hollywood sign.
Afterwards I returned to the hostel - 2 hrs again.
Before I went to sleep I bought a ticket for the match LA Rams vs. Dallas Cowboys tomorrow.

Day 41: The last full day in the USA!
Today I had not a lot of plans. First I packed my luggage before I went to Venice Beach feeling the lifestyle, seeing some skaters.
I also went to the Google office. Why was there a biiiig spyglass in front of the main entrance? Mmmmh 🤔😅
In the evening I finished that trip with a American football match - a great American experience! I watched the game LA Rams against Dallas Cowboys. Well I don't know the rules or most of them 🙈 But the atmosphere was such American like. The best half of a football match must be the second one. The atmosphere exploded!
But everyone who says that soccer is expensive never saw an American football match! Parking pass: $50!!!, bottle of beer: $16,... 😨
When I was at the hostel again I wrote some postcards and enjoyed the last evening in the USA drinking some cocktails 🍹
