    The Premium Life

    Thanks to all the work travel I did earlier in the year I ended up with a few buddy passes. Which means my companion just has to pay for the taxes. My companion and I figured we should max out the value. We first attempted to get business class on the new Dreamliner. Turns out they don’t allow that, so Premium it was.

    Being on one of the very first WJ flights to London I must say they have improved a lot. Okay well I don’t know how they are doing in steerage (economy) but they are nailing Premium.

    Bubbles arrived as soon as we sat down. Rocky Mountain goodies in our seat pockets. And a foot rest! Maybe that is just in the bulkhead seat but OMG awesome. I have been crammed in a lot of seats in my almost 40 years and having a foot rest is a big deal. I will be able to sleep with ease. Well should...watch out for the next post.    Okumaya devam et

    What is this life?

    I spent 50+ days at a Marriott this year. That was enough to get me a decent status, points and perks (like upgrade vouchers). I found a hotel close to the main train station where I only need to spend $250 for a few more points. I figured $250 Canadian for 3 nights in London was a steal of a deal. Then I put in a request for an upgrade. I did not expect to be upgraded but on Saturday I found out I was. All it said was king bed and a sofa. All I really require is a king bed, slippers and a robe. I am happy as a clam with that.

    We got the hotel at 1:30pm and I was a little annoyed that we did not get the early check in I asked for. As Ty reminded me we were getting an upgrade so I should be happy. After 2 lattes and meeting with with friends the room was done. It was cleaned for check in at 3. (Yes from 2-3:30 I had 2 coffees, trying to make it for a drink with friends tonight.

    OMG! The room (suite) was worth the wait. We have a sitting area and dining area in one room, a canopy bed in another room and a bathroom with a massive tub and a rain shower. It is a little much but I do feel like princess. Good thing I am staying at a Best Western at the end of the trip to bring me back to reality.    Okumaya devam et

    The Longest Day

    Holy duck! Jet lag is a bitch. My beat jet lag rule is to stay about as late as you can so can get your body adjusted to the new time zone. That is what we did.

    After we checked in we showered and met up with our friends at a local pub at around 6pm. Luckily we both got a burst of energy. At 8pm we figured we needed to eat so we headed to Burger and Lobster for delightful lobster rolls and truffle fries. Then pure exhaustion hit but we figured we had done well.     Friday the 13th

    Friday we woke up at 9:30 in our princess bed and got ready to meet Rob and Nat for lunch. We were meeting Kathleen and Bettina later that afternoon to go to Borough. Which is a market full of food. I thought I would have a light salad so I could eat at the market. However the Italians and I have different views on what a salad is. As you can see from the picture below arugula was just an accent colour. Sadly I was too full for the market.

    We went anyways and did all the touristy things. Took in a Christmas market and then went to Regent street to the biggest toy store I have seem, Hamley’s. We only spend 30 minutes in there but you could spend so much more. The LEGO displays were amazing!

    We also took in the lights at Regent street (which are spectacular) and after dinner we went to Harrods. If you have ever seen Mr. Bean’s Christmas episode you will understand. It is even more impressive in person. Sadly there was no manger scene to play with.

    We capped off the night with martinis at the hotel bar which is where Ian Fleming wrote some of the James Bond novels. Apparently Churchill also hung out in this bar.    Okumaya devam et

    Jet Lag Kicked Us in the Nuts

    Bettina found a cupcake place on Instagram that look amazing. Since I love cupcakes Ty and I tagged along with the Germans. Peggy Porschen did not disappoint. It was a small cafe that bled pink and the cupcakes were yummy. The best part of the cafe was not the cupcakes but the instagram influencers. Girls were dressed to the nines taking pictures at the entrance.

    After tea and a morning sugar rush is was time for a nap. Which was not in the plans. I hate being in a cool city and hanging at the hotel.

    We woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to tackle another afternoon in London! Before the theatre we took in all the amazing store fronts on Old Bond Street. We also stumbled along an area that had an under the sea light theme. We made the mistake of staying in the Regent area till 4:30. At this time people decide they need to shop and see the lights and the streets are wall to wall people. It is insane. I have never seen so many people.

    The evening was spent at the Old Vic watching a Christmas Carol. Which was the best take on the classic I have ever seen. It was dark yet funny, sad yet happy. Pretty much an emotional roller coaster that had a string section and dancing.

    Part 1 of the trip was capped off at a cider lodge in a Christmas market. If we did not feel Christmassy when we got to London we are now.    Okumaya devam et

    You are very late

    Having a 11am flight we thought we had lots of time to get to Gatwick. What we did take into account was the train being on a Sunday schedule and delays.

    The train pulled into the south terminal at 9:45am. We pushed through the children and the elderly to arrive at the Royal Air Morc desk at 9:58. The one attendant was not happy and gave us sass about being very late and how we should have taken an earlier train. Yep. Noted. He was the one that determined if we got our ticket so we just smiled and nodded.

    The funny thing is that we are now checked in and have 45 minutes before boarding and they do even have a gate for our late. So are we really that late?? The board says that the gate will be announced at 10:50 but we are supposed to board at 10:45? I feel we are going to duck up and get sassed again.

    Update: It is 11:01 and we are not even on the plane. Now who is late Mr. Sassy pants.    Okumaya devam et

    Travel Days Suck

    Our flight to Casablanca was over an hour late getting in. It turns out I had lots of time. Yes I am still miffed at being sassed.

    Anyways I always under estimate how long it takes to go through customs, get luggage, get the SIM cards, get cash (if needed) and then get to hotel. As it turns out we were also late to our first tour meeting. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Worst part was we had no day light hours to tour the city. Actually the worst part is being the late people to the group. I hate being that person.

    After our meeting we went on the hunt for bottle water since we can not drink the tap water. We are staying at a place a little bit lower than a Marriott so they do now give us free bottle water. We could not find a corner store but found a Sheraton. Where we proceeded to buy really expensive water, have tea and eat olives. It is a pretty low key night.

    Tomorrow we are off to Fes with 7 new friends, a guide and a driver! Hopefully the pictures will be better than tonight’s. Enjoy pictures of tea and unhappy Ty. Haha.    Okumaya devam et

    Poor Casablanca

    The movie Casablanca has really romanized the city. In reality the city has 7 million people, is polluted and no one really tours it but if is the start of many Moroccan tours.

    Our tour left at 8am and we headed to Volubilis a city that that the Romans created back in the day when they were trying to takeover the world. The French started excavating in 1912 and in 1997 it became an Unesco sight. (For those who care to learn more https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volubilis) It was cool but I really enjoyed the olive trees and the green lush fields. Not what I was expecting from Morocco but it makes sense as they have a lot of olives.

    Then it was off go to a G Adventure funded charity where we got a traditional lunch. Which is a 4 course event. First you start with “salad” which is not salad like we know it is different types of vegetables smashed up. Like eggplant in tapenade style. You put this on fresh yummy bread. Second course is the tagine dish which is some sort of meat cooked in a tagine with spices (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tajine ) and couscous. Third course is fruit (oranges, bananas, apples) Fourth is a cookie and mint tea. It is all rather delightful.

    We made it to Fés at 5pm and checked into our massive room. While it is no St. Ermins it does have more seating areas than I know what to do with.    Okumaya devam et

    Fuck, I am being sold for goats

    On our first night in Fés we went to a traditional Moroccan feast with music and belly dancing. Only 6 out of the 9 group members went. I was the only girl. They sat us on the stage. At no time did I think ooohh better not sit on the edge because I will be pulled into the entertainment.

    The dinner was nice. We had non lettuce salad, tangines and couscous, fruit, mint tea, cookies all well listen to traditional music. Then the bloody band took a break and another group came up. The old man drummer kept throwing me kisses, wanting to dance with me and kept putting his head in my lap. At one point he pulled me to dance with him on the stage. I sat down and thought I was was safe.

    Nope.

    Next thing I know I am being pulled to dance with other girls and the other end of the restaurant. At which point I was like “oh no, this is it, Ty sold me for goats”. The madness stopped when performers got enough tips. Ty said he put in 100 MAD. He saved me for 13.70 CAD. That is love.

    Then the belly dance comes on. I am safe right? Fuck no. Next thing you know the belly dancer is pulling me up, wrapping my scarf around my waist and I am doing a bad version of a belly dance. 🤦🏻‍♀️

    I had 1 very light beer. This was no Ukrainian dance or River Dance off. I could nail those. Moroccan dancing is NOT on my resume.    Okumaya devam et

    Freezing in Fés

    Google Fés and you will see people walking along the Medina in the sun. That is the picture that was in my mind that was quickly being erased as we fell asleep Monday night to pounding rain and wind rattling the windows. It would blow over right? Yes. Yes it would. Positive thinking.

    No. No it did not.

    It was not even a sprinkle it was a bloody down pour. We got off the bus to see the door of the royal palace...just the door and the Jewish quarter. It was the worst 30 minutes of everyone on the tour. With cold wet feet we all got back on the bus to go to the top of a hill to view the Medina. As you can see from the video it was awful.

    But we paid money for this and Wednesday we are off to a new place so we sucked it up and continued to the the Medina tour. Which was semi covered and we got to go into shops. We needed a tour guide for the Medina because it is full of windy narrow streets with no street signs. And no google map street view to help.

    Stop 1 - ceramics shop - new found respect for ceramics and the hand painting the people do. Also just being able to make pottery is amazing. I wanted it all but just got a new tea cup with silver on it. Nothing fancy.

    Stop 2 - Fés tannery - this place is famous (google it!) for its leather and how they colour it. Obviously I had to buy a bright pink leather purse. Which I bartered down and was happy with the price. Also I helping a man feed his family. (Shhhh don’t tell my leather guy in Bali).

    Stop 3 - scarf shop - they showed us how they weave the scarves and then pushed their wares onto us. Luckily Ty and I are scarf people (sorry, Ty wears pashminas). I was able to get a suitable price for 4 of them but the man was not giving in to my low balling price for the silkworm scarf. Sadly I walked away from the camel scarf. Still have regrets. 😢

    Lunch was in restaurant that had remarkable ceramic tiles, which after seeing how they were made gave all of us more appreciation for the craftsmanship. We had another 4 course feast where salad is not salad. Still loving lamb tangine and mint teas so that is good as I think there are a lot in my future.

    We returned to the hotel at 3 where we at napped, read, and warmed up. Yes, it is that cold. I went to dinner in my wool aritzia blanket scarf! Like we said in London “you know it is cold when the Canadians are”. Here I was worried about having enough cool clothes to wear. Haha. Fack.

    Tomorrow we have a 6:30am start so we can make it to the Sahara to ride a camel to watch a sunset. You know just a regular day. Haha    Okumaya devam et

    Snow in Africa?

    The one thing I enjoy about travel is that it opens you to things you may not have thought of. Like snow blockades that may prevent getting to the Sahara desert to ride a camel. If you ever wondered “does it snow in Africa?” The answer is YES, yes it does. I guess they do know it is Christmas after all.

    The Longest Drive

    We always knew that December 18 was going to be a shit travel day. The estimated drive time was 10-11 hours and we left Fés at 6:30am. We were to have a nice lunch stop along the way. The end of the journey was a sunset camel ride at the hotel.

    Well it is December and it can snow on the Atlas Mountains. (Who knew?) The day before they shut down the roads over the mountain range because of heavy snowfall. We left at 6:30 hoping the roads would be open by the time we got there. They were not. 2 roads both closed. We got coffee and got in the line. The wait was not too bad. I watched the last 30 minutes of Bridgette Jones and we were off slowly after that. It was slow moving as traffic was backed up and there were no double lanes. We were doing well until another closure.

    At one point we were 2 hours behind schedule, which is usually not a big deal. However we were schedule to watch the sunset on camels so we had a window.

    With limited stops, eating lunch quickly, everyone holding their bladder and a crazy driver we made it! There were a few moments on the windy roads where I thought we may die but obviously we did not.

    The drive was pretty spectacular. We went from snowy mountain town, to what looked liked the drive from Vegas to Phoenix, to parts that had shale rock, to super flat and desert like, to lakes and rivers and valley and trees. It was pretty cool to see so much in what is really not that long of a distance.

    The coolest scenery of the day was driving to the edge of the desert. The dunes do not look real. Like a painting. As of right now they are the highlight of the trip.    Okumaya devam et

    Hump Day

    I will not lie. I was not 100% into riding a camel. That changed when I saw the desert. I just wanted to run into it. I also did not realize the camels are tied together. I had visions of being on a wild camel that would run me away from the pack. That did not happen.

    Relaxation and a Gorge

    Thursday was relaxing as we ditched going on the 4x4 tour. I honestly thought it was off roading dune buggy stuff that I am not interested in. What the tour actually was, was getting into a Jeep Grand Cheroke and visiting small villages.

    By the time I figured that out I had my heart set on drinking coffee and enjoying the view. Walked the dunes, saw a baby lamb and some camels. Okay they were not in the dunes but in a pen, probably to slaughter. Mmmm lamb.

    Anyways the tour. Yeah that started again at 11:30! Back on the bus to see a gorge! Woot! Woot!

    The gorge was a spectacular piece of rock. The water comes from a spring which is interesting as we are in a valley in the desert.

    Go shorty, it’s your birthday

    I woke up in...okay I can’t remember where we spent the night. Early morning starts and long hours on a bus really fuck with one’s bearings.

    Todra Gorge! Yes, we left Todra on our way to ben ait haddou. A small village that has become famous since the filming of Lawrence of Arabia in the 60’s and was the filming location for Gladiator and for some Game of Thrones scenes.

    On our way to Ben Ait Haddou we stopped for our daily morning nous nous fix. Nous Nous is a Moroccan coffee very similar to a cafe latte. I purchased 2 for 20 MAD and gave the the man 100 MAD (yes I feel like a baller here) he gave me back 30 MAD. I looked at him funny and was like how much was the coffee. He was like 20 but you have me a 50 and he held up a 50. I was like no I did not, I gave you 100. It went like this for a bit but I was standing my ground for what is the equivalent of $7 CAD. It was all about principle. Do not rip me off Mr. Local Man. In the end he gave me my correct change. Ty said it was funny to watch as the guy was not expecting push back.

    After another delight lunch we made it to Ben Ait Haddou which is a UNESCO site because it still has buildings made in the old way. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aït_Benhaddou). It also has a lot of kasbahs. Which after seeing a kasbah up close I am not too sure why The Clash chose to sing about.

    After a bit of a lie down (Ty gave me his cold for my birthday, asshole) we took a tangine cooking demonstration where we made our own chicken tangines. It was fun and they are pretty simple to make. Now I just need to figure out how to get a clay cooking dish home.

    The surprise of the night was the cake they brought out. Which looked like it was made from scratch and was. Turns out the purchased cake from the town we stopped for lunch got smooshed on the final spot. Not shocking as the roads were winding. Since our guide Khalid wanted to give me a presentable cake he got the staff at the hotel to make one. It was chocolate. Everyone knows how I feel about chocolate cake but what can I do? It was an unnecessary kind gesture so I said nothing and I ate my cake.

    All in all a pretty good memorable birthday. A cake, a cold and I did not get ripped off.    Okumaya devam et

    No pictures please

    Today was our last day in Morocco. We crossed the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech. A small city of 2 million people, super clean, modern and French.

    After some free time we went on our last tour of a palace in the mendina and a tour of the market. The palace like all others was impressive with the mosaic ceramics details and plaster carvings. The details are just wow.

    The square of the Medina is a tourist trap. Cheap crap and people trying to make a buck. You look at someone and they will start selling you something. They have snake charmers and caged money. If you take a picture of them they will ask for money. If you take picture or merchants they will ask for money.

    Mr. Lee is our group member from Korea. His English is so/so and he kinda does want he wants. Mr. Lee gives 0 fucks. He also likes to take pictures and videos. We found out half way through the trip that he has a YouTube channel. The night before we realized that he was not paying attention about the merchants and snake charmers. We were all worried about having to save Mr. Lee in the market that he heard the “no picture” lecture from all of us. Thankfully he did listen and fighting off snake charmers is not something we had to do.

    After the tour the guide gave us free time till dinner. We walked around a bit (without hassle). It probably helped that there was 6 of us and 5 were male. Then we went for ice cream. As one does in a Muslim country where it is hard to get a beer.

    Our last supper was spent at a hotel restaurant where they served beer (yippee) and lamb shank. Omg the lamb here is so good. Then in was good byes to the group and time for Ty and I to get ready for the next adventure.    Okumaya devam et

    You are too early

    The flight to Paris was 8:00am. Our guide said we should be at the airport for 6:00am so the car would come for us at 5:00am. This meant a brutal 4:15am start time. But we did it. Ty was so excited for Paris that he was ready by 4:40am!

    The drive to the airport took 15 minutes, getting us up to the check in desk 5:20am. Where we were told we were took early to check in. 🤦🏻‍♀️    Okumaya devam et

    Going deaf in Paris

    We landed in Paris on time and since there was only about 35 people on the place we got through customs pretty quickly. Lynds found us right away and we got a cab. Ty was impressive speaking fluent French to the driver. Of from what I could hear. Due to a head cold my ears were clogged and I could not hear very well or monitor the volume of my voice. It was horrible.

    Our flat was not ready but we were able to drop our bags off and we went for a delight pizza lunch, with lots of wine. After we went back to the flat, had more wine and got ready to explore our area.

    First night was exploring La Marias. We found cute shops and books stores and ended the night at another great Italian restaurant. Italian food is great here.    Okumaya devam et

    Train strike is real

    We woke up without an alarm and it was amazing. We slowly dragged our asses out of bed and the flat and went for breakfast at Benedict. They had amazing eggs benedicts. Mine was a mushroom truffle delight.

    The afternoon was spent seeing the sights. We went to the Louvre, took our picture and walked around the outside. To actually do the Louvre properly you need a while day and we did not have the time.

    We then decided to see the Arc de Triomphe. The plan was simple take the train to the the closest stop and walk 5 minutes. We went down to the metro station, it was busy with people and seemed normal. We each purchased a 10 pack of tickets and got on the train.

    The train whizzed by our stop and a few others. We got off and thought maybe we got on an express train. Nope. There were just stops we could not get to. So we abandoned that plan and went to find Cafe de Flore, an old cafe that Picasso used to go to that is not frequented by instagrammers. The best part was getting there as we took a train and did not need tickets as all gates were open. At this point we were like why did we buy tickets?

    Anyways we had few glasses of wine and cheese at the cafe and laughed at instagrammers. We were just getting ready to head back home to get ready for the ballet when Lynds checked her email. The ballet was being cancelled due to the union strikes. Seriously. We were like WTF and sad. Not knowing what to do next we had another glass of wine. We then walked to a department store with a really cool display.

    We deduced we needed onion soup and more wine. Google found a highly rated restaurant close to us so we went to it. It was closed for the holiday season. So we went for a glass of wine and googled another spot. We decided to take the metro to the new spot. Nope that was not happening as the entrance was closed shut. Bah! We finally sucked it up and got a taxi.

    We finally ended up finding a place with great soup and snails. It is not the day we had planned but can you really have a bad day in Paris?    Okumaya devam et

    Christmas Eve

    We started Christmas Eve off with a walking food tour which was amazing. The first stop was at a bread shop that has been making bread the same way for hundreds of years. It was delightful. Then we were off to a chocolate and macrons shop. Followed by Moroccan food, which we had a laugh at, but it was legit. There was a Jewish meat bun, an Israeli French dessert, French onion soup and finished off with wine. It was perhaps the best 4 hours of my life.

    Then Ty and I were off to find a chrome cast so we could watch Christmas movies. We have several of them at home but forgot to bring them. We found a mall with an electronics store with ease.

    For Christmas Eve we went up to the Montmartre area for dinner and Christmas music at Sacré-Cœur Basilica. This would have been an easy journey If the trains were all running. We ran to the metro station in hopes to make it before 6:30 as the google told us the line was open. Well it was not. Then we tried getting an Uber only to have one cancel on us. By the time we got to the restaurant we felt pretty defeated.

    Thankfully the restaurant was warm and cozy. We had a 3 course meal which contain all yummy French food. The Christmas music at the church was moving and the church itself was amazing. We then head back to the flat for a night cap.    Okumaya devam et

    Christmas in Paris

    Christmas morning was off to a slow start. We rolled out of bed at 10am to the couch to watch all things Christmas. Ty needed some clean clothes so he headed out to do laundry. We finally came alive at 3pm and headed to the Eiffel Tower. The plan was to catch it in day light and at night.

    We also scratched making a Christmas dinner and decided a picnic at the tower would best suit the situation. Lynds had bought me a bottle of Moët and Chandon champagne for my birthday which obviously had to be drank some where special.

    To our surprise the metro was running and stopping at all the stops. It was a Christmas miracle. We made it to the Champs-Élysées and walked to the Arc de Triomphe which is pretty impressive.

    We then made our way to the Eiffel Tower where we had a photo shoot with our rams and then ate cheese and drank champagne. I think it is the most French day you can have in Paris.

    After eating our last bowl of onion soup in France we went back to the flat where we drank wine, listen to Christmas songs and watch Holiday SNL clips.

    With check out at noon Ty and I decided to walk around our super cute neighbourhood for a coffee and a croissant. Croissants here are amazing. All bread products are amazing here. The French have mastered bread like no body else.Okumaya devam et

    Under the sea

    We decided to switch up our travel and train back to London from Paris. This meant going through the Chunnel! The engineering feat that links the UK to mainland Europe via a tunnel under the sea. The whole thing is mind boggling.

    Train trail is better than flying except for packing your luggage onto the car. It is better for the snacks you can bring. We had a lot of left over cheese from yesterday that we took on the train with us and had a train picnic! Complete with Bordeaux wine.    Okumaya devam et
